Creative, fun and participatory workshops for primary schools Supersonic projects are aimed at different age ranges in primary schools. Tailor made for delivery in school, each project has been devised by members of the SCO alongside some of the UK’s top music educators and composers. With direct links to the Curriculum for Excellence Supersonic projects provide: • Creative music activities for pupils • Ideas for listening • Music-making opportunities • Information for teachers on how to build a musical performance
• An opportunity to learn about families of instruments in the orchestra • A chance to meet the players • Fun ways into music Our projects fit around the school timetable, and end with a fantastic performance to showcase the work pupils have done that day.
bear hunt! Guaranteed to have children singing in the playground, this project uses the classic children’s story, We’re Going On A Bear Hunt! by Michael Rosen, as the inspiration for a magical journey to find the bear through a series of mini musical adventures. It includes a song specially composed by leading British composer Alec Roth, and plenty of opportunities to make music.

Bear Hunt Curriculum for Excellence Outcomes
Created in consultation with teachers and music specialists Bear Hunt! is devised for children in the last year of nursery and the first few years of primary school (P1-3). The wind trio (flute, clarinet and bassoon) will visit your school for one whole day, working with two classes (max. 30 pupils per class) – one in the morning, and one in the afternoon. The project can include the opportunity to create a performance for the rest of your school and parents. Children thoroughly enjoyed the experience – as did the teacher! Lots of good ideas I can use in class. – Teacher

SCO Brass has created an exciting project for upper primary school (P6-7) with composer Alasdair Nicolson. The brass quintet and pupils explore themes which are closely linked to the curriculum through music. Pupils are encouraged to think about the environment and looking after each other. Pupils also learn about the quintet’s fantastic brass instruments, learn a song especially composed by Alasdair Nicolson, take part in an interactive concert, compose their own music, play instruments and some will even have the chance to conduct! Giants’ Chaos lasts a full day and can include the opportunity to create a performance for the rest of your school and parents (max. 30 pupils).

everyone’s a critic Working with a professional music critic over three months, senior school pupils have the opportunity to write their own reviews of SCO concerts. Students will attend three SCO concerts – one in each of our Edinburgh venues: Queen’s Hall, St Cuthbert’s and the Usher Hall. Under the guidance of the journalist, they will explore the critical skills of reviewing concerts in order to write a review to a tight deadline, just like life as a real music critic! The reviews will be posted on the SCO website, with one outstanding review selected for special commendation by the journalist.

about the orchestra...
Introducing the Scottish Chamber Orchestra
Robin Ticciati
The SCO is the nation’s chamber orchestra performing throughout Scotland and abroad. It is an instrumental ensemble of 37 musicians playing string, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. The SCO has a new Principal Conductor, Robin Ticciati, the youngest Principal Conductor in the Orchestra’s history at just 27 years of age. Meet one of the Orchestra’s newest members, 1st Violinist Sijie Chen:

“
I first started having violin lessons when I was eight-and-a-half-years-old, but I kept forgetting to go to my lessons! Eventually I became more serious after going to Chetham’s School of Music, and have since been studying in London, Manchester, Rochester and Cologne. I love playing chamber orchestra repertoire as well as period performance and I’m really looking forward to playing some more great music with the SCO! Read more about SCO players online at www.sco.org.uk/experience-the-sco

The wonderful thing with the SCO is that the range of music they can give to an audience is massive, that’s what’s so exciting. Their response to different soundworlds is incredible, particularly their way of making classical music work, that’s a real joy and I can’t wait to explore that and do lots with it.
“
Chinese-born British violinist Sijie Chen works regularly with the Academy of Ancient Music, Manchester Camerata, BBC Philharmonic and Hallé orchestras. She is passionate about chamber music and has collaborated with eminent artists including Levon Chilingirian, Marcia Crayford, Alasdair Tait, Huw Watkins, and the Vardanyan and Myrios Quartets.

Voice of a City A very special Edinburgh concert, celebrating the City’s riches in music and words from past and present. The SCO is joined by choirs of all ages from across the City to present a concert for young, old and everyone in between. Howard Blake’s musical setting of poems from Robert Louis Stevenson’s much-loved children’s classic, A Child’s Garden of Verses, is paired with Edward Harper’s The Voice of a City. A phenomenal success at its premiere in 2003, Edward H Harper’s work celebrates the City of Edinburgh – its beauty and arper its people – even the wind and the One o’Clock Gun!

In 2010/11 the Scottish Chamber Orchestra’s Education and Outreach Department is 25 years old.

During the past quarter century we have travelled the length and breadth of Scotland making connections with thousands of people. Whether in schools, residential homes, community centres, concert halls, fields(!), trains or prisons, members of the SCO have brought music alive and had some fabulous adventures along the way. In this year of our 25th anniversary, SCO Connect would like to rediscover stories, talk to people who have taken part in projects, and find out what’s happened to that five-year-old from 1986 who’s grown up and could now be enjoying music anywhere in the world!

Creativity, self-expression and enjoyment are the very cornerstones of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. For many, taking part in an SCO education project is the first contact with a professional orchestra, and the experience is unforgettable. – Stephen Deazley, SCO Education Director 1999-2005

When I was working with you I had the best time in my life. I just couldn’t believe it when the teacher told us we got picked to work with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

“
There were so many incredible musicians there to help me with my composition that valued my musical opinion! My composition was on the theme of Noah’s Ark and I remember I was desperate for rain sound effects and instead of being laughed at for my crazy idea I was encouraged to add a percussion section with a rain stick. That encouragement meant so much to me and gave me the confidence to go on to study music after I left school and now I work in music and arts education.

As part of our hugely successful 2009 project The Lost Book (www.thelostbook.net), we created guides in partnership with animation company Binary Fable (www.binaryfable.com) to help anybody make their own cut-out animation, complete with soundtrack.
Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at our concerts, on tour, or even what our players dream about? The SCO blog is written by musicians and management of the SCO about a range of topics including tours, recording sessions, and SCO Connect events. Simply visit www.sco.org.uk/experience/blog and click on the orange button (on the address bar) to subscribe.
These step-by-step guides, available on our website www.sco.org.uk/connect, contain everything you need to know, from making storyboards to taking lots of pictures to bring the characters to life. There are useful cut-out characters and hints and tips from composer Alexis Bennett. A guide to recording your music and easy instructions for putting it together with your animation means it will be completed in no time! All these resources use software that comes free with all computers, PC or Mac.
