Seoul 2015 SCOPE | Economics’ Foreign Trip Interview with Michael, Participant in the 2014/15 Foreign Trip to Seoul
A Unique Opportunity During Your Studies A Review of SCOPE | Economics’ Foreign Trip
T
he Foreign Trips have always been one of SCOPE | Economics’ most popular events of the year. To get you all the details about last year’s Seoul trip, we did an interview with Michael, one of the participants of the trip. What did you enjoy most about the trip? The trip was one of the greatest experiences during my time at Maastricht University so far and I am sure it will be exactly the same for every future participant. Not only will you get to spend time with friends but also get to know many new people. Moreover, being in an unfamiliar country, on a continent that you have never been to before will be undoubtedly very exciting and a great learning experience. What was the response from your friends when you told them you were going on that trip? When you tell your friends that you will be or have been going to a far away country as part of university excursion they will be amazed. It is a special feature of your bachelor program at SBE that you have
the chance to go on trip like this one. On top of that you even get a considerable amount of credit points for it. What did you do during the company visits? The committee, which organised the whole trip, managed to get very interesting and inspiring presentations and debates. We got the chance to talk to and learn from people that are in the diplomatic service. They were very interested in us and our opinions about political issues. Furthermore, they provided participants with valuable career advice for diplomacy and even wanted to read the group papers that we wrote. For example at Global Green Growth Institute they set up a debate with almost 10 people from all different departments. We learned how they operated, which difficulties they faced in their work and how they attempt to create sustainable growth. What other companies did you visit? Other companies and institutions we visited were the Dutch Embassy, the EU
delegation, GGGI and KITA, Samsung, the European Chamber of Commerce in Korea (ECCK) and the bank of Korea. Did you meet any SBE Alumni? The representative of the Korean International Trade Association had surprisingly studied at the SBE as part of a university exchange. He was so happy to have us in Seoul that he even took us to an authentic Buddhist temple where we had a traditional meal.
incidents that I could tell you about now. But I don’t want to spoil you but rather recommend you to make these experiences yourself!
