The Waldteufel have different sizes from 1 (very large) to 14 (small). It is important that the angle between the cord and the skin is always 90 degrees while playing, otherwise the skin will tear. The sticks must always be rubbed with plenty of cello or double bass rosin. It is important not to touch the grooves of the stick with the fingers, otherwise the rosin will no longer work. The Waldteufel can be ordered several months in advance from Thomas Meixner (thomasmeixner@schlagquartett.de).

The stick has two grooves. For commuting, the cord lies in the front groove. Let the instrument swing slowly back and forth. Don’t take over the rhythm of the previous player. The instrument can suddenly be grabbed and stopped with the free hand. See tutorial in QR link below.
cP
œ
œ ‰ The instrument swings once and is grabbed and stopped with the free hand on the back swing.
Swing in a circle: Let the instrument swing in a circle while hanging (the cord lies in the front groove of the stick) or let the instrument swing in a circle with raised hand if written (it is important that the cord lies in the second groove of the stick). See tutorial in QR link below.

Cardboard gift box on rosined wooden board: flat = high pitch large angle = low pitch

Small cardboard gift box on rosined wooden board – rub a cardboard gift box (ca. 18cm x 11cm) against a large stable wooden board that has been rosined thoroughly. Pull and press lightly on the middle of the contact point with a finger of the other hand. You can change the pitch by adjusting the angle (flat = high, large angle = deep), the dynamics can be achieved by varying the pressure and speed. Fix the friction point with the finger of the second hand. Always pull in one direction and start again. The white diamond with the arrow pointing backward means an unstressed pushing back of the box, which sounds like an inhalation. See tutorial in QR link below.
Strings
œ Without up or downbow motion, move the bow vertically along the string in the direction of the peg box.
≥
tasto, a lot of pressure, let tone “roll”. Damp all strings with several fingers at the nut, produce a consistent “rolling” noise – like a subtone. Hold the bow in the fist (ad lib.) to have a better control on this noise. See tutorial at
6 6 Double Bass – hit the fretboard alternately with both hands: right hand on the spot, left hand alternately above and below it.
-- Double Bass – fingerhit (tapping), divisi
