Perfor mance notes

Dynamic markings in quotation marks indicate the intensity of the performance and not the resulting absolute volume of the action.

Niente

Flutter tounge (winds and brass)

Brass: valve tremolo Strings: unmeasured tremolo

Air sound - to be performed tonelessly (winds and brass)

Key clicks (winds)

Key clicks while producing air sound (winds)

Slap tongue (brass)

A toneless, airy sound created by bowing directly on the bridge while covering the strings. The bow pressure and the speed of the bow must be sensitively balanced to obtain a direct and audible result (strings).

Heavy bow pressure (strings)

Played behind the bridge (always pizzicato). The notated pitches refers to the strings on which the action should be performed (in this case (violin) the G-, DA- and E-string).

"Woodblock pizzicato" - a very high pizzicato. Dry sound with very little pitch.

Flute: to be performed as a mixture of both pitch and breath noise. The resulting tone quality should be light and airy.

Strings: The fingers should stop the strings as if playing a harmonic. Stopped pitches should be heard as a weak shading of the predominant bowing sound.

When flute and clarinet parts are marked ppp or pppp the result should be barely audible, and have an airy tone quality.

Multiphonics passages are notated with suggested fingerings and the desired pitches. If the given fingering does not work, the player is encouraged to explore alternatives that will preserve the notated pitches as faithfully as possible.

Edition Peters

For more than 200 years, Edition Peters has been synonymous with excellence in classical music publishing. Established in 1800 with the keyboard works of J. S. Bach, by 1802 the company had acquired Beethoven’s First Symphony. In the years following, an active publishing policy enabled the company to expand its catalogue with new works by composers such as Brahms, Grieg and Liszt, followed in the 20th century by Richard Strauss, Arnold Schoenberg and John Cage.

Today, with its offices in Leipzig, London and New York publishing the work of living composers from around the world, Edition Peters maintains its role as a champion of new music. At the same time, the company’s historic and educational catalogues continue to be developed with award-winning critical and pedagogical editions.
