This work was commissioned by The Philadelphia Orchestra Association and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Philadelphia Music Project, an artistic initiative of The Pew Charitable Trusts, administered by The University of the Arts.
The world premiere was given by The Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Philadelphia, PA on February 15, 2006. The Pittsburgh premiere was given on December 1, 2006 in Heinz Hall and the New York premiere on December 5, 2006 in Carnegie Hall by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Sir Andrew Davis.

Program Note It seems to me that the title of this piece is justified: I am not the only one – many people in our time recognize and sense the calamity overtaking humankind, the lowering of the moral level of society and the buildup of hatred in our souls. The contrast – between this picture of disease and the fact that a large segment of people want nothing more than to feast and make merry – creates a typical situation that has been described in artistic works many times. A condition of the spirit arises from which it is impossible to escape. One wants to get rid of it, to overcome it. But such a view is only the most superficial level of the composition. The point of the piece, actually, consists not so much in the expression of that condition of the spirit, as in the creation of a purely musical (i.e., sound) metaphor comparable to that condition. And the potential for such a metaphor does exist in music; in essence, the principle of the origin and the principle of the disappearance of the world are contained metaphorically in the very acoustical nature of sound relationships. The fact that every union of two distinct tones generates two supplementary pitches – the summation and difference combination tones – can be treated as a metaphor for creation. Besides this, there are other aspects that can be regarded as a reflection of cosmic principles. For example, the interval of the minor second gives rise in a very low register to a combination tone of a frequency such that it is heard as the beats of a pulse. The interval of A – Bb in the subcontra-octave creates a difference tone of 1.635 Hz, which pulsates at approximately
(1.635 x 60 = 98.1).
The acceleration of this pulsation leads, at a fixed moment, to the transformation of pulsation into the frequency of a sound that is, in practical terms, audible. Here we can talk about the birth of sound from pulsation. Slowing down leads to the gradual disappearance of sound, followed by that of audible pulse. (The metaphors of creation and disappearance.) But if this pulsation accelerates steadily, i.e., then this acceleration corresponds to the movement of sounds along the steps of the overtone row; the intervals generated by these steps of acceleration gradually grow larger. As they move away from one another, the sounds reduce the tension of the interval. Here an important property of sound relationships can be observed, the principle of compensation: the increased tension accompanying the acceleration of pulsating combination tones is compensated for by a decrease in tension between the pitches of the intervals that generate these accelerating combination tones. And vice versa, as the intervals generating combination tones are compressed, the tempo of pulsation slows down, compensating for the excessive tension. The violation of this principle is also a condition of disease, leading to catastrophe. So this, specifically, is the metaphor (of a purely acoustical property) that plays the decisive role in this composition: in the episode that brings the orchestral fabric to an explosion, the chords of the brass section are compressed together with a simultaneous acceleration of the tempo. The tension of acceleration and the tension of compression coincide, violating the principle of compensation. And this is the cause of the subsequent explosion. On a superficial level, this dangerous situation is marked by slashes into the orchestral fabric of alien, aggressive, simplistic rhythmic interjections that have been produced using a computer. To return to the beginning, I would like to add that in order to eliminate and overcome plague, we need to tackle the following questions genuinely, that is, creatively: – to recognize what a plague is (without the right to take fright at it!) – to sense whether we have sufficient inner strength to overcome it; if not, then, – to attempt – is there is a possibility, as it were, to be oblivious of the plague – to create a magic circle around ourselves guarding us against the evil eye. The answers to these three questions: 1. “Plague” – is a condition of the progressive disintegration of the fabric of our senses, feelings, thoughts and life itself (disguised, as a rule, behind a condition of feverish merry-making). 2. Overcoming a “plague” is possible only by reconstructing the gradually disintegrating fabric of life. This is that spiritual core without which humankind is doomed either to extinction or to something even worse, to mutation into an army of clones. 3. “To survive a plague” can be accomplished only if one has one’s roots and one’s home. “Bestelle dein Haus!” (“Build your home”) – it is not for nothing that these words are key for J.S. Bach in his cantata “Actus tragicus.” Thus we arrive at the question which is as old as the world: what is better, to look or to close one’s eyes? To know or not to know? To be or to appear material? A simple answer is impossible (as it was, incidentally, for Alexander Pushkin in his “Feast During a Plague”); the task of the artist is “only” to recognize the problem in all its magnitude and present his or her view of it to the listener. The artist does not judge; even in conditions of a never-ending hysterical feast, the artist’s responsibility is to create a realistic view. If there is one, there is hope. – Sofia Gubaidulina
