Per Nørgård GENNEM TORNE Forord / Programnote GENNEM TORNE er et ca. tyve minutter langt værk i én sats, og det én-satsede forløb har givet anledning til undertitlen passage. Værket er for harpe solo, fløjte, klarinet og strygekvartet. Titlen er lånt fra Maria-hymnen “Maria gennem torne går”, der afsluttes med ordene “da blomstred’ roser frem mellem torne”. Digtet blev jeg først opmærksom på efter afslutningen af værket, hvis “passage” gennem mange, ofte dramatiske, tildragelser, i de sidste minutter når til en “rosenblomstring”, der matcher slutlinien. At et Maria-digt gav idé til titlen hænger sammen med værkets gennemgående musikalske strøm, som henter motiver fra mit tidligere vokalværk FLOS UT ROSA, hvilket betyder ”en blomst som rosen”, nemlig den rose der blomstrede frem da Jomfru Maria fødte ved en helt ny slags fødsel: NOVA GENITURA - som i øvrigt er titlen på et andet af mine værker der er udsprunget af min oprindelige ”rose”-melodi fra 1975. GENNEM TORNE er tilegnet harpesolisten Tine Rehling, og sammen med hende har jeg forsøgt at udvide instrumentets klang-repertoire ved at udforske eksisterende spillemåder og deres grænseområder, for dermed at trænge igennem til nyt terræn og nye klanglige muligheder, som realiseret af den altid såvel eksperimentere-villige som virtuose harpenist. Per Nørgård THROUGH THORNS Preface / Programme Note THROUGH THORNS has a duration of ca. 20 minutes, in one continuous movement, thus the subtitle passage. The work is scored for harp solo, flute, clarinet, and string quartet. The title is borrowed from lines from an old Virgin Mary Hymn: “Mary wanders through thorns”, a hymn which ends with the following line: “then roses grew forth amongst thorns”. I only came across the poem after finishing the composition, the “passage” of which is a journey of sometimes dramatic events, concluding with a “rose-blooming”, as does the hymn. For THROUGH THORNS to borrow its title from a Virgin Mary Hymn has to do with the musical material and current of the piece, which brings motives from an earlier choral piece of mine, FLOS UT ROSA (Latin for “a flower like a rose”), and the rose in question is of course the one which grew forth when the Virgin Mary gave birth to the Infant Jesus in a hitherto unheard-of fashion, a NOVA GENITURA (new birth), which is the title of another work of mine that also derives its material from my original “rose”-melody from 1975. THROUGH THORNS is dedicated to Tine Rehling, and together with her I have tried to expand the sonorities of the harp, by exploring existing techniques and their more remote regions, in order to gain access to new territory and new soundscapes, as realised by the constantly experimentallyminded and virtuoso player.

Fra tysk middelaldervise (formentlig oprindelig på latin), MARIA DURCH EIN DORNWALD GING (MARIA GENNEM TORNE GÅR), Maria-vise fra omkring år 1600 (eller tidligere), fra egnen omkring Thüringen. Melodien er en folkevise, teksten er ”anonym”. Dansk tekst ved Thomas Alvad.

From a German hymn (probably originally in Latin), MARIA DURCH EIN DORNWALD GING (THE VIRGIN MARY WANDERED THROUGH THORNS), a St. Mary-hymn from c. 1600 (or earlier), from Thüringen in Germany. The melody is traditional/folksong, the text is “anonymous”.
