This work can involve community members (young and old), and actual firefighters in firefighting regalia with hoses and equipment. The local Mayor or Newscaster would be suitable as the Narrator along with the local Firechief who heads the Ahose team@. Young and old can man the assorted sirens and alarms used throughout this work. An alternative approach is staged impersonations of firefighters, and added young music students to attend the sound effects. In any case, it is important there be as much Avisual@ presence as possible, in the shape of cutouts and, or, projections, body movement and lighting, all coordinated with the text. Happy Firefighters= day! M.G.

Hi, I am . Hello to all of you, with some words about the musical notes you are about to hear. The composer, Morton Gould, says he grew up, as most of us do, with the sight and sound of fire houses, fire engines, and firefighters who fight our fires. As a child (which he once was), he followed and chased the clanging engines, and still does! So when his grandson, Benjamin, age seventeen, became a volunteer fireman, it brought back memories, and because composers are good at remembering, he set them to music, with some extra surprises for you to remember! Here to play this musical story is our conductor, Maestro , (spot) and the orchestra. (lights up) Look and listen—listen and look! (segué to orchestra prologue)

That was quite noisy, wasn’t it? Quite different from the olden days of the horse drawn steam fire engine with clanging bell and a spotted Dalmatian dog mascot next to the driver. Imagine some ghosts from the past that still haunt an old firehouse—and an old firehorse that is just too tired! (stage darkens—cutout (or projection) with horse, engine, and dog, slowly crosses) A Firehorse Trot—with Dalmatian dog!

(Orchesta continues out of control while the conductor attempts (Hose team of firefighters burst onto the stage from wings dressed in full regalia. They move as a team with nozzle and to stop them. The conductor is unsuccessful. The conductor hose to “douse” the orchestra.) shrugs his or her shoulders and steps off the podium.) (Narrator wipes and fans brow)

(As the firefighters aim the hose and nozzle at different sections of the orchestra, those sections diminuendo and die away—as do the stage lights. As the orchestra fades and smolders, there is an occasional “flare up” (trumpets suddenly stand up and “flutter,” violins, etc.) The team promptly sprays the offenders. Finally, all is quiet.)

Narrator (and chief)
* Fire Chief (with nozzle): (to Narrator, angrily) Who started this? Narrator: I don’t know, sir. I guess the conductor, known as Maestro. Chief: The who? what does this conductor called Maestro do? Narrator: He waves his arms, sir. Chief: Oh, playing with matches, was he? Narrator: Oh no sir, with a baton—to play Fire Music. Chief: An arsonist also! Why Fire Music? Narrator: Because it’s on the program, sir. But it got out of control. Chief: Playing with fire, was he?! Don’t we all know we never, never, never play with fire—anywhere, anytime, anyplace? Narrator: We all agree, sir. It won’t happen again, but thanks for rescuing us and putting it out. Chief: What a week we’ve had—floods and accidents and power failures and heart attacks and now this—and we also better hose down the audience— to play it safe! Narrator: As you wish sir, and by coincidence, the next number on the program is a “Hosedown,” and now that the orchestra is doused and dried, how about livening up the proceedings with some “water” music? Chief: That’s what they should have played in the first place! Let’s go!

*If no “talking” Fire Chief, or Firefighters are mimed, Narrator quotes the chief’s dialogue, with fire helmet on, and answers with helmet off, i.e., Narrator: The Chief bellowed angrily (helmet on), “Who started this?”, (helmet off) I don’t know sir, etc. (helmet on) “The who? etc.”

I hope you didn’t get too wet, and had a good time looking and listening, as I suggested. If you also remember, we began with a Firefighter Fanfare. To finish—a Marching and Dancing Fanfare for our friendly Firefighters to parade up the aisle(s) to the stage and leave with our applause. Maestro—A Fanfarian March! (Firefighters parade and move back up to stage, bow, and exit. Conductor, orchestra, etc. bow.) Segué to Fanfarian March (Finale).
