The Immeasurable Space of Tones Instrumentation Contrabass Instrument (Contrabassoon, Doublebass or Contrabass Clarinet) Vibraphone or Electronic Mallet Instrument Piano Electronic Keyboard or Organ Violin Performance Notes The Vibraphone part may be played on an electronic instrument or an amplified acoustical instrument. The Keyboard part may be played on synthesizers, samplers or organ. The Contrabass Instrument, as well as the Violin, may also be amplified. The ensemble sound should be as continuous as possible. Dynamics are full throughout and the ideal balance is one in which all the sounding tones in a tutti are equally audible. Keyboard timbres should be full, but transparent. For the ‘manual’ staves of the Keyboard part, only 8‐foot sounds should be used, with no octave doublings. The pedal tones should be only 16‐foot sounds, sounding an octave lower than written. For instruments without pedals, a second Keyboard player is required to play the bottom staff of the keyboard part (the pedal tones). Even on an instrument with pedals, an assistant is required to turn pages and to play some or all of the pedal tones. The pedal line may also be played on doublebass, alone or doubling the keyboard/organ. Keyboard timbres should change gradually from section to section, as indicated in the score and the keyboard part. When played on Vibraphone all percussion sounds should be played as unmeasured four‐mallet rolls. When played on an electronic mallet instrument the chords may be rolled or played using sustained sounds. If sustained sounds are used attacks should occur only on chord changes. The violinist should carefully observe the written string indications. Bowing is strong, full and free throughout. Total Duration is about 27:00.
