John Tavener
IN THE HIGHEST... for solo harmonica (or violin), percussion and strings
CHESTER MUSIC
First performance on 12th February 2011, at Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum, Glasgow.
SCORING Solo harmonica (or violin) Large Tibetan temple bowl Large tam-tam Strings
Duration: c. 5 minutes Score and parts are available on hire
COMPOSER’S NOTE In the highest was originally written for harmonica and ensemble, for Larry Adler to play with the Scottish Ensemble, and it was composed in memory of Michael, Lord Marks. The solo part may also be performed by a violin. Ideally the soloist should play from a very high position, sounding distant but clearly audible, with the aid of a microphone if necessary. The ensemble (Tibetan temple bowl, large tam-tam and muted strings) should be seated in the ground space or main platform. The music should sound tender and haunting, for a lost paradise... J.T.
