Edward Elgar’s miniature cantata With Proud Thanksgiving was commissioned for the opening of the Cenotaph in London in 1920. The music is a reworking and shortening of the final movement of the 1915 work, The Spirit of England, and contains a brief and beautiful setting of lines from Laurence Binyon’s poem For the Fallen. This edition, arranged by Ian Tracey, provides a slightly expanded version of Elgar’s poignantly simple text setting, which is suitable for Remembrance Day services and memorial occasions.
