Scorpions (species Buthotus) are found in deserts, jungles and forests of tropical, subtropical and other temperate areas of the world. • Scorpion re mostly nocturnal. • Scorpions are found from below sea level in Death Valley to elevations as high as 12,000 feet in the Andes. • Typically brow r black in moist areas, scorpions may be yellow or light green in the desert. • Scorpions glow a lovely phosphorescent green under UV light. • Th verage scorpion is about one inch long, however, there are giants in the jungles of Central America, New Guinea and Southern Africa that grow ver eight inches. • The largest scorpion in the U.S., the giant desert hairy scorpion, obtains a length of about five inches. • Scorpion venoms ar omplex mixtures of neurotoxins (toxins which affect the victim’s nervous system) and other substances; each species has a unique mixture. • Despi heir bad reputation, only one species in the U.S. and about 20 others worldwide have venom potent enough to be considered dangerous to human Some scorpions can live a year without food or water. • Most scorpions are loners with, ahem, cannibalistic tendencies. When two scorpions mee hey often fight until one is killed and eaten by the winner. • After mating, the smaller scorpion is often in danger of being eaten. As females are usual igger, it is the male which usually gets eaten. • Some males have much longer tails than females, suggesting that the length is important more fo mating than hunting. • A few scorpions have been demonstrated to orient by the lights of the stars and moon (astromenotaxis). • At least 10 specie f scorpions (Polis) can be found on the beach. • The average scorpion probably lives three to five years, but some species live 10 to 15 year
