ummer has always been my favourite season, not least because of far-flung holidays, and anthemic tunes that will take me back to Amnesia long after my Ibiza tan has faded. However, with this year being a pretty damn massive one for Scotland, we’ve centred this year’s travel guide around good old staycations. Turn to page 10 and start planning your road trip (we’ve also got a soundtrack for that on page 34). Our cover stars London Grammar are just back from the US and gearing up for another hectic summer of festivals, while Glasgow’s finest Twin Atlantic and Prides also give us their banter over in the music section, and we also introduce Saint Raymond and George Ezra.

AND, because we like to keep things fresh, we’ve added a whole new section dedicated to Employment – hit page 84 now to hear what key industry leaders are looking for in their employees and start sharpening your skills.

THE

MEASURE Hand Baggage Only Fares Saving us an average of £10 per flight (though we have noticed it drops to £5 on some journeys and is as much as £15 on others), British Airways’ hand baggage only fares are a Godsend for short haul flights when you only need a small case, but still want your free breakfast/lunch/wine/delete as applicable.

Prom Style So we left high school six years ago; that doesn’t mean we can’t shop the cutest prom dresses, tiaras and tuxes that the high street is currently throwing at us. From Topshop to Jack Wills to River Island, everywhere we look there’s sparkle, taffeta and seriously sick tailoring. Give a subtle nod to the trend with Toppers’ ‘Prom Queen’ necklace or go full Napoleon Dynamite and dig out your best brown suit – the choice is yours.

Football As we told you in our April issue, there’s no point in trying to hide from the World Cup, which kicks off on June 12th and will take over your TV, your friends’ main topic of conversation and – inevitably – your life. It’s only one month that occurs every four years, so get involved and you might just find yourself enjoying it.

4FRONT

Hangovers They were never cool to begin with, but we’re so over hangovers that we’ve decided not to drink at all this month, and it’s proving easier than we thought! Turns out all you need for a great night out is good music and your best buds… wait, isn’t that what our mums have been saying all along? Shhh, don’t tell them they’re right!

Graduation Fear So you’ve got the degree, but what happens next? Where are you supposed to find a job? Why is nobody replying to your applications? Will you have to live with your parents forever? Silence your fears with a flick through our brand new Employment section and rest assured that you’re not the only one suffering from ‘the fear’.

Hayfever Nothing makes a festival weekender quite as difficult as hay fever. Runny eyes, a snotty nose and constant sneezing doesn’t half detract from a killer headline performance, so we’re stocking up on antihistamines and hoping for the best. Oh to be a bee at a time like this.

LONDON CALLING “The most amazing thing is when people are so incredibly moved by the songs”

Interview: London Grammar

By Jennifer Lynn

@Scotcampus

“It depends if we fucking write any,” laughs London Grammar guitarist Dan Rothman when we ask if the band will be debuting any new material on the festival circuit this year. “We’ve got shit all at the moment. We don’t really write on the road, I know a lot of bands do and we’ll do bits and bobs, but very little in terms of full songs.” Speaking to Scotcampus just days after completing a five-week US tour, Dan and bandmates Hannah Reid and Dominic ‘Dot’ Major now have a month off, a time which was initially intended for getting said new material ready. “This period was going to be a time when we started writing, but we’re all so exhausted by what we’ve been doing that the thought of actually going into the studio and, to be honest, the thought of actually seeing each other – just kidding – I love my bandmates very much, but we all want some time with our families,” explains Dan. “The US tour was wonderful, an amazing experience, but probably a week too long. By the time we reached that last week we were on our last legs! It’s really cool to see things happening in America though, because of course that’s what bands hope for.” Having taken in everywhere from New York to SXSW, it really is no wonder that the trio – who met at the University of Nottingham – are somewhat knackered. “SXSW was an amazing experience and the New York show was very good,” says Dan. “We’ve played in New York a lot, about six times, but every time we’ve played there it’s never been that great. It’s kind of like London, it’s never that fun, but it was for a change!” That being said, the band do enjoy playing their home city and namesake, because “you don’t feel

www.scotcampus.com

like you’re a million miles away and you can have family come to see you, and all those simple things that you take for granted.” However, despite a string of UK tour dates lined up this June, it’s a summer full of fields that Dan is most looking forward to. “We’re so excited to play festivals this summer, because we’ve not done that here since we’ve broken, and I think it’ll be interesting to see what kind of reception we’ll get at a UK festival now that we’re more well-known as a band,” he says. “Glastonbury should be brilliant, we played it last year and it’s one of those places that every band dreams of doing, and it was an amazing first experience. This year it will hopefully be particularly wonderful for us.”

“We’re so excited to play festivals this summer." With new single Sights released on June 1st, Dan explains how the track came together, and why one band member in particular is psyched for its moment in the spotlight. “Sights is just another song we wrote in my garage and Hannah created this vocal and lyrics about her fears and anxieties about life in general,” he says. “That’s the basis of the song. It was one of the easiest songs on the album in terms of the recording process, because some of them were really painstaking and took ages to get right, whereas Sights was more immediate. It’s Dot’s favourite track on the record, so I’m glad it’s coming out as a single.” Comparisons to Florence and the Machine and The xx have followed the band since they arrived on the scene last year, but as Dan explains, he’ll never see this as a negative. “I really love The xx and I think they’re great, but I wouldn’t

say Dot or Hannah particularly listen to them, though Dot is a big fan of Jamie xx and perhaps that relates to the production side of it. I’d say they probably have a lot of influences that cross over with what we were trying to create, like Massive Attack and Portishead, but I don’t know. Hannah does sound similar to Florence, but I think as time goes on she sounds less and less like her. Both Florence and The xx are amazing artists though, so I’d never be upset to be compared with them.” As for new artists who he’s championing, Nick Mulvey – who supports the band on tour this June – rates highly. “I think his record will be beautiful and amazing, and he’s a very talented live performer, so he should do well,” says Dan. “Aside from Nick, I found this kid the other day, Tom Misch. He’s 18 and he’s making progressive, electronic jazz… that sounds really twatty, doesn’t it? But he’s honestly brilliant. When you hear someone so talented at such a young age it’s pretty amazing.” Despite their debut album If You Wait setting the UK charts on fire by reaching number two, there’s something even more rewarding about the whole experience for London Grammar. “The most amazing thing is when people are so incredibly moved by the songs, whether it’s someone’s friend having passed away or they don’t speak to their parents, we hear a lot of stories about how the songs and Hannah’s lyrics have empowered these people,” says Dan. “It’s great to hear and, without being really mushy about the whole thing, it is just wonderful. Those are the things that make what we do very worthwhile.”

London Grammar’s new single Sights is out now. The band play T in the Park on Friday 11th June.

Don't Just Watch The Ads . . . Can’t go out on a Saturday night without watching Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway first? Well you had better get yourself to Glasgow’s SSE Hydro on August 19th, 25th, 26th or 27th, for Ant & Dec’s Takeaway On Tour! Yes, the boys are so popular that they’ve got four nights at the arena, where they’ll be surprising audience members, giving out prizes and bringing a whole host of special guests with them. And, since it’s the summer holidays, we can only hope Little Ant & Dec will be allowed to attend…

WHAT'S

WHEN

Music Royalty Much like The Killers, there’s something about seeing Kings Of Leon pack out a stadium on a summer’s night that’s utterly magical, especially when accompanied by a cheeky cider or two. Watch the band of brothers (and cousins) bring down the house at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro on June 20th, with those songs we’re not going to mention the names of because they’re so overplayed, but we love them anyway and know that you’ll know exactly which ones we mean. Lay where you’re laying…

Snoop Lion : Hear Him Roar

Who doesn’t love Dolly Parton? We may have been to see the country legend a few more times than is socially acceptable, for fear that every time will be ‘the last time’, but that really doesn’t matter when you’re singing your heart out to Jolene or getting your arm dance on for 9 To 5. Plus, she’s Miley Cyrus’ Godmother, but you knew that… right? Anyway, don’t miss Dolly at the AECC Arena on June 15th!

Snoop Dogg, Snoop Lion… Whatever you want to call the eternally dreadlocked one, he’s hitting up Glasgow’s O2 Academy on June 8th, and you really should too. Guaranteed to put on one hell of a show – providing he gets in the country this time – expect classics like Beautiful and Drop It Like It’s Hot, as well as newer offerings Torn Apart and No Guns Allowed. Altogether now: SNOOOOOOOOOO-OOOOOP!

George Ezra, that is, one of this year’s hottest new talents. Playing Edinburgh’s Liquid Room on June 13th, George takes centre stage, having previously rocked support slots for Lianne La Havas and Tom Odell. His blues-style vocals will have you thinking he’s far older than his 21 years, as he performs tracks from debut EP Did You Hear The Rain? and 2014 follow-up Cassy O’.

20 reasons t o STAYCATION THIS SUMMER

Thinking of packing a case and jetting away? Don’t bother! This is Scotland’s summer to shine and you’re not going to want to miss a minute of it.

1 According to forecasters, summer 2014 is set to be Great Britain’s hottest summer on record – woohoo! Considering how many “skelpit” faces we saw on Instagram during the warm weather over Easter, we’d say it’s entirely possible, and you should definitely all stock up on sunscreen. Lobster is NOT a good look.

2 Glasgow 2014 kicks off on July 23rd and you’d be a fool not to get involved with the team spirit it’ll no doubt bring to the city. Head over to our Life section for a lesson in how to fully embrace this summer’s Commonwealth Games. Dining out during your staycation? Check FHIS ratings for restaurants across Scotland by visiting Ratings.food.gov.uk

Unless you’re going to Brazil, there’s no better place to watch the World Cup than from the comfort of your local beer garden, or at a World Cup BBQ. Which, providing this really is the hottest summer on record, we’re sure there will be plenty of come June 12th-July 13th.

4 Equally, if you’re not a football fan, there’s no point in going away to any tourist resort ANYWHERE during the World Cup. All the bars will be playing all the matches, everyone will be cutting about in their team colours and you’ll just feel like a bit of a knob for not joining in.

5 Everybody knows Scotland is the home of golf and this year’s Ryder Cup (Rydercup. com) at Gleneagles looks set to cement our status. Kicking off on September 23rd and running till September 28th, it’s a great way to round out a summer of sporting magic.

6

Scotland’s music festivals just keep getting better! From wellknown favourites T In The Park, Wickerman and Belladrum, to the Kelburn Garden Party (Kelburngardenparty.com) and Glasgow Jazz Festival (Jazzfest.co.uk), there is literally something to whet every musical appetite.

7 What better way to embrace the year that Scotland welcomes the world, than with a wee trip to Cowal Highland Gathering (Cowalgathering.com), the biggest Highland Games on the planet? From August 28th–30th, spectators can enjoy pipe bands, Highland dancing, heavy athletics and a taste of the cuisine we’re known for around the globe. Make ours a fish supper – we’ll pass on the haggis, thanks.

8 Go for gold at the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup at Ayr Racecourse (Ayr-racecourse.co.uk). A great day out whether you’re partial to a flutter on the horses or not, Ladies Day takes place on September 19th, while the big Gold Cup day is September 20th. If anything it’s one last excuse to get dressed up before the new semester starts and you’re back in your jeans.

@Scotcampus

There’s no denying that sunshine puts us all in a better mood, but come rain or shine, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe has us doubled over every August. With free and paid-for comedy shows running all day, every day, from August 1st–25th, channel your inner tourist and get chuckling.

Don’t cross Largs off your summer plans altogether though; it’s practically criminal to make it through the season without a visit to Nardini’s (Nardinis.co.uk), home to the best ice cream sundaes you’ll ever taste. There’s also an on-site Tony Macaroni and the classic Nardini’s café should you require something a little more substantial – you can always get a tub of ice cream to take home.

10 Scottish theatre is seriously killin’ it this summer, with Scottish Opera’s Madama Butterfly (Scottishopera.org. uk) running at Theatre Royal Glasgow throughout June and July, while The Kings (Atgtickets. com/venues/kings-theatre) has Fame, Rock Of Ages and Dirty Dancing on its programme this season. Just remember: nobody puts Baby in a corner.

11 Free days out are plentiful, from a trip to the National Galleries of Scotland (Nationalgalleries.org) or the Hunterian Museum (Gla.ac.uk/ hunterian), to a hike up Conic Hill (Conneryscottishwalks. co.uk). Bring a packed lunch and it won’t cost you a penny!

12 While most tourists don’t come to Scotland for the beaches, we do have plenty of them, and the predicted hot weather make them an excellent place to hang out. For a stretch quieter than Largs or Ayr, head to West Kilbride, where there’s white sands and gorgeous views of Arran on a clear day.

www.scotcampus.com

14 Since we’re on the subject of food, there’s a plethora of restaurants, street food events, farmers markets and general tasty treats to be discovered around the country. Glasgow has really upped its burger game of late, what with Buddy’s, Bread Meats Bread and Burger Meats Bun all giving us the meat sweats (in a good way), and rumour has it we’ll soon have our own Five Guys (Fiveguys. com), Byron (Byronhamburgers. com) and Almost Famous (Almostfamousburgers. com). Please let it be true. Our stomachs are growling at the thought…

15

Now we’re on food we can’t get off it, but let’s add a little film to the mix, with the Deep Fried Film Festival (Deepfriedfilm.org. uk). Taking place in Lanarkshire from August 30th–September 6th, the Festival showcases independent films from around the world, and gives awards such as Pomme de Terre, Chips & Cheese and Chip Buttie. Founded by Martin Greechan, the Festival is now in its ninth year, and raises money and awareness for charities including Hepatitis Scotland.

16 Incorporating everything from fashion to music, fancy dress parades, food, literature and theatre performances, Glasgow’s West End Festival (Westendfestival.co.uk) takes place from June 1st-29th. Get involved and decide for yourself if West is best…

17 Who didn’t love building a fort as a kid? Well, we’ve found the grown-up version, and it’s a Wigwam holiday at Mains Farm (Mainsfarmwigwams.com) in Stirling. Like glamping, but better, because you’re doing it in a Wigwam.

18 We’ve always wanted to be royalty and a trip to Edinburgh, Stirling or Inverness Castle is usually enough to make us feel positively regal for an afternoon. Plus, the #selfie opportunities are endless.

19 In need of an island adventure? Why bother with the Balearics when you’ve got Skye, Bute, Arran and more right on your doorstep? For a quick trip, hop on the ferry to Millport (Millport.org) and spend the afternoon climbing rocks, paddling, eating ice cream and inhaling chips. Perfection.

20 AND FINALLY, the money you’ll save from staying in Scotland this summer will get you off to somewhere sunny in the winter months when you really need it, because the sunshine won’t last forever. Viva Ecosse!

3 STM Interview: Twin Atlantic

I’m currently painting the hall in my flat,” says Twin Atlantic Bassist Ross McNae when we catch him on the blower. “Exciting stuff. Sam, our singer, is moving into a new house today so we’re just taking it easy today. Twin Atlantic, DIY Kings. That can be your angle.” While an angle on a plate is always appreciated, Ross

“Inspiration for a lot of the tracks, maybe not lyrically but in the way they come across, they were written with live shows in mind. For us as a band, Free was such a massive success because we got to play to a load of people, and once you have that you want to mimic it with better songs that suit those environments more. Crowd interaction gives you such a buzz.”

and bandmates Sam McTrusty, Barry McKenna and Craig Kneale don’t exactly require an additional string to their bows, however well oiled they may be.

With their third studio album Great Divide due for release on August 18th, Ross explains how the band’s processes have altered since last record, Free. “This album worked quite differently; we used to all write together, but on this record it was mainly Sam who wrote the songs and then we came in and changed bits,” he says. “That’s when it becomes a Twin Atlantic song rather than a Sam song.

32Music

" Crowd interaction gives you such a buzz." And with Twin Atlantic’s new style comes a colourful, pop-fan friendly video for new single, Heart And Soul. “Jonas Odell directed the video and he was great,” says Ross. “We wanted to turn what you would expect a rock band to do on its head. Things were getting a bit cookie cutter with us and other bands around us, so we were just trying for a brighter, shinier look. We wanted to excite ourselves and catch people off-guard. We let Jonas have free rein and he just went for it.”

Taken inspiration from our travel guide and hitting the open road? Every long drive needs a killer soundtrack and we’ve got 10 epic song suggestions…

ON THE ROAD AGAIN If It Makes You Happy Sheryl Crow

Don't Save Me Haim

Britney Spears’ teen movie Crossroads might not have been Oscar-worthy, but with its cast including a young Zoe Saldana and Orange Is The New Black’s Taryn Manning, we think it’s become a little iconic in years gone by. Their road trip was made all the more monumental by this classic Sheryl Crow track – give it a whirl and you’ll see why.

Ladies, there are no better hair icons than Haim, so feel the wind blow through your tresses as you practise your best bass face and sing along. Boys, you can join in too, whether your locks have reached waist length or not. Altogether now; “BAY-BAY, DON’T SAVE ME YEAAAHH!”

Runaways The Killers Let your blonde hair blow in the summer wind with one of The Killers’ best songs of all time. You may not be running away, but this song will certainly inspire you to put pedal to the metal and reach your desired destination. Going To California Led Zeppelin So if you really were inspired by our travel guide you should probably be heading to Coatbridge rather than California, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy this Led Zeppelin classic. If you are hitting up Route 66 this summer, make sure you have an In-N-Out Burger for us. We’re not jealous at all.

34Music

Good Vibrations The Beach Boys

Road trips and The Beach Boys go together like Scotland and Irn-Bru or something like that, so if you want to feel the Good Vibrations, make sure you add this classic to your Spotify playlist. Summer Calvin Harris

Our prodigal son has hit it out the park again with this sunny day anthem. Roof down, windows open and blast it loud. No further explanation required. ’03 Bonnie & Clyde Jay-Z ft. Beyoncé “All I need in this life of sin, is me and my girlfriend…” If our girlfriend was Beyoncé, we’d feel the same, but for now we’ll just have to settle for blasting one of the best getaway songs of all time.

Anyway You Want It Journey

Every car journey requires a bit of Journey and since Glee ruined Don’t Stop Believing for us, Any Way You Want It has been promoted to our playlist. It was also on our mum’s Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle soundtrack when she first got a car with a CD player and will forever remind us of driving to Oban in that shiny blue VW Beetle. Aww. It's Time Imagine Dragons Any song with a build-up to an anthemic chorus is perfect road trip fodder and Imagine Dragons tick that box with almost all of their tracks. However, It’s Time is a Scotcampus favourite, and we think you might like it too. A Thousand Miles Vanessa Carlton Sure, Vanessa Carlton may be something of a one-hit wonder, but that one hit featured in the ultimate movie car scene: the White Chicks sing-a-long. The Wayans brothers might not have known the words, but everyone else in the Western world does, so crank it up. Got a classic road trip tune? Tweet us @Scotcampus!

ROAR G

lasgow band Prides, aka Stewart Brock, Callum Wiseman and Lewis Gardner, are the next big thing in synthpop. If you’ve perused their SoundCloud before, you’ll know all about killer tracks The Seeds You Sow and new single Messiah, not to mention their brilliant covers of Katy Perry’s Roar and Ellie Goulding’s Burn. As the boys prepare to take on festival season, we caught up with them to find out where they’re most looking forward to playing and – more importantly – if they’d rather date Ellie or Katy…

36Music

@Scotcampus

Which festivals are you buzzing for this summer? Well it’s random, but we’re playing Summer Well festival in Romania in August, and the tagline for it is something like ‘the festival that is a holiday’. There’s one called Barn On The Farm too, in Gloucestershire, and since we’ve been booked there’s been a lot of people who have said they really love it. Looking forward to that as well! What’s your dream festival stage that you’ve not played yet? The big one is Glastonbury, it’s not a festival we’ve ever been to, but it’s just so iconic and it would be cool to get on the bill. Or Primavera, we’ve got a few pals going this year and it just looks incredible, plus the line-up is obviously great. And it’s in Barcelona – what more could you want? *Boys get sidetracked by conversation about festival line-ups, specifically Radio 1’s Big Weekend, which they are very excited about* Is Katy Perry playing the Big Weekend? Yeah, she’s headlining on Sunday night… That means she’s gonna be in Glasgow for the WHOLE WEEK! Unless she leaves for five days and comes back… but maybe she’ll stay… Funny you should mention her, because we were going to ask about your cover of Roar and also your cover of Ellie Goulding’s Burn. If you could go on a date with either of the ladies, which one would you choose? Stewart: I would have to pick KP Callum: I’d go for KP as well Lewis: I’d choose Ellie. I think I’d have more in common with her. That’s one of the hardest questions we’ve ever been asked. Katy Perry

www.scotcampus.com

seems like she’d be great fun, but even though I love Russell Brand, she was married to Russell Brand. That’s a black mark [laughs]. So if someone’s been with Brand it’s a no-go? That’s a pretty good philosophy in life, isn’t it? He’s quite the lothario. Back to the covers – is that something you plan to do more of? Yeah, we’re doing more acoustic sessions for people and quite often people want you to do a cover. It’s one of the things we’re quite open to doing, but we always try to do different ones, with some working out better than others. Roar and Burn just worked out really well and with the mixtapes we do as well, it’s all music we listen to, and music we like. It’s always nice to have new stuff going out, we don’t like to rest on our laurels, but at the same time it gives us space to write for the album. And that brings us to what we all want to know, how is that album going? We’re nearly there! We’ve got all the tracks, it’s just about picking which ones will make the cut, the tracklisting and all of that. We should have the final mixes in the next few weeks. Hopefully we can put out another couple of singles this year and then the album will go out at the beginning of next. Talk to us about your new single Messiah… It’s about self-doubt and being in a band you get it a lot. You’re always hoping you’re doing the right thing, playing the right thing and all the rest of it. It’s about looking for someone to rely on and lean on, someone who’ll help you out with it, so it’s about love and self-doubt and all those clichés.

" You’re always hoping you’re doing the right thing, playing the right thing and all the rest of it. "

But then in a very un-cliché way we have the video of two priests on a road trip. Where on earth did that come from?! We got some good treatments in from different sources, but the guys who ended up doing the Messiah video were the same ones who did The Seeds You Sow video, who we’re pals with. I think we just went through their idea and loved the dark humour to it. We thought it would translate well on screen and we’re really pleased with how it worked out. You’re joining Foxes on tour, who is another very hot lady, but how did that all come about? We’re just trying to get as many shows as possible right now, to get out on the road and spread the word, and we got offered Foxes. We jumped at the chance! Would you consider recording a little Foxes cover? Funny you should say that, right after this interview we’re off to a live session, and we’re going to do a Foxes cover. Holding On To Heaven. It’s a tune.

Prides’ new single Messiah is released on June 23rd. Catch the band at Electric Fields in Dumfries on August 30th.

Interview: The Orwells

I

llinois rockers The Orwells hit the headlines in April this year after supporting Arctic Monkeys on tour; not because of their epic performances, but for comments made about Alex Turner and co. “We were with them for about 50 dates, you saw them once and you'd pretty much seen every date that they'd played,” guitarist Matt O’Keefe told Gigwise. Alex Turner’s response? "They should have been out trying to get laid instead of watching us every night." Ahead of the release of their second studio album Disgraceland on June 30th, and a string of UK tour dates, The Orwells’ bassist Grant Brinner tells us what to expect from their live shows.

Talk to us about Disgraceland; is it a natural followon from Remember When or are there different vibes on there? It's a very natural follow up. The only thing different is that we had the tools and equipment to make the record we always wanted; we’ve been very lucky in that sense. We also aren't sixteen anymore, so the songs have more meat to them. We’re looking forward to getting the songs out there. Where did the title come from? It's our nickname for our hometown, Elmhurst, Illinois. Where are you most looking forward to visiting on your UK tour and why? Edinburgh, I heard good things. Also our London shows

38Music

are always rad, the kids go wild. What should we expect from your live show? All of our sets are different, but lots of guitars, sweat, blood and booze. How receptive have you found your fans here compared with in the US? They're equal, but different. I don't wanna pick favourites, but the kids in the UK go totally crazy at our shows. What's the craziest thing a fan has ever done for you? Follow us on the road, for quite a few shows. At first it was funny, but it quickly turned creepy…. You supported Arctic Monkeys on tour, but which other UK artists are you into? If you’re talking about modern musicians then like King Krule, Gorillaz, Palma Violets, etc. we always pick up some more favourites whenever we head over to tour, so I’m sure we’ll have a few more after this summer. Which festival are you most looking forward to playing this summer? I'm not really a fan of festivals, but Reading & Leeds will be fun. It’s our first time, so it should be a blast. Tell us your number one festival weekend survival tip… Sit in our air-conditioned trailer. The Orwells play Edinburgh’s Electric Circus on June 3rd

Rogue-One: Investigating Glasgow's Very Own Banksy

Your Definitive Guide To Scotland's Festive Happenings

I still don’t have a definitive answer for what we do,” says Will Taylor, lead singer of London four-piece, Flyte. “I suppose it’s alternative pop.” Speaking the morning after a raucous school disco inspired show at Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club, Will quickly shakes off any tiredness, to give us a lesson in Flyte history and so much more…

How did Flyte come together as a band? John – who’s the drummer – and I have played together exclusively since we were ten years old. We were always in a band and just had various other people come and go. Nick, who’s the bass player, was a few school years ahead of us and was always in other bands that did quite well. They were quite glamorous, then John and I would just be whittling away in secret with our band, because we were very particular about what we were going to release. It was to the extent that we weren’t actually releasing anything or doing any gigs, but at the same time working all day long in the rehearsal room, for years and years. Nick joined in 2012 and we then needed a fourth member around this time last year, and Sam was a busker down on the tube when I was at this desperate

40Music

point, needing a final piece to the puzzle. He was in Tottenham Court Road station in London and he was playing [Van Morrison’s] Astral Weeks from start to finish. I stayed for the whole thing then accosted him and he didn’t resist too much. Ten days later we did our first ever gig. Is the band’s name related to Flyte chocolate bars at all? It’s not, though I am a big fan of Milky Way! It’s from one of my favourite novels, Brideshead Revisited, which is a beautiful Evelyn Waugh book. A lot of it is about feeling like a normal person, but finding yourself in situations with far more glamorous people, and then being let down by them. One of the main characters is called Sebastian Flyte and he embodies the amazing, bright flame, who’s inspiring and beautiful and talented

@Scotcampus

TAKING F l y t e

and amazing. You just know they’re going to go on to be Prime Minister or famous or something. Then time goes on, adulthood kicks in and that person implodes, because they peaked too soon. Sebastian Flyte turns to drink in the book and begins to lose all sight of himself. It’s a theme I often explore. Talk to us about the video for We Are The Rain…

The idea was driven mostly by my desire to make the video myself. Due to my lack of experience and gear I knew it would end up being unintentionally unlike other things, just due to a lack of the same rules and structure that a legitimate director might give themselves. I wanted to explore what the song meant to me; a depiction of a relationship that lasts a long time, but it’s there because of a desire to maintain stability, not because there’s any fire. I felt like the glittery, tacky family photo element fitted that perfectly. Are visuals something that will continue to be important to you in videos and for stage sets? Yes, absolutely, but not necessarily that specific look that we had for We Are The Rain. We’ve done that cheap disco look now and I’m looking forward to doing the next thing. I can’t wait till we have the budget to go on the road with our show and have a proper set. I’d like to get someone in theatre involved, who’s done sets for shows and whatnot, and really get them to work on the aesthetic of it all. Our music isn’t trying to be flashy at all, it’s very song-driven, so it will be in the visual aspect that we really flare it up. Where would be your dream gig venue? Aberdeen Music Hall was really beautiful. I enjoyed that venue. The walls in the hallways look like something out of The Shining. I’d definitely rather have less capacity and more atmosphere out of a venue. I

www.scotcampus.com

think the scale starts with someone sitting with you at a kitchen table, just the two of you, and that’s probably the best gig you’re ever going to do. The bigger the room, the more people, the less good it’s going to be. That’s just my opinion! Two nights at a small, ambient venue would be nicer than one at a huge stadium, for me anyway. What did you learn from touring with Bombay Bicycle Club? We were very taken with their light show. When you’re the support act you don’t get any lights, there’s a limit on the PA system, you’re very restricted. I liked that challenge though. I liked trying to win the crowd over anyway. But it’s great knowing that you can earn a light show or a fancy set design. One particular expressionist artist used to have guests round to see his new paintings, but before he unveiled them he’d keep the guests in a dark, lightless room for something absurd like an hour, and then he’d push him into this room full of colour and light with his paintings. It really accentuated the beauty and the colour of the pieces and, in a less poetic way, that’s what you do with the support act. They’re the dark room with no extreme volume. What are your plans for the rest of the year? We’re hoping to go and tour around Europe, because we used to busk on Portobello Road on a Saturday morning, where there are a lot of tourists coming and going. It’s meant that we’ve got about forty fans in New Zealand, ten in Dominican Republic, and then obviously more in Europe. We’re going to try to get out there and see them all. Flyte’s single We Are The Rain is out now.

oing to see Ed Sheeran on his Multiply tour this autumn? This is the guy who’ll be supporting him and the reason you WILL get there early. Meet Saint Raymond…

How does one go from Callum Burrows to Saint Raymond? The ‘Saint’ part relates to where I’m from and Raymond was my grandad’s name. I wanted to step out of the mould a bit, especially when I was just gigging with an acoustic guitar and could be categorised easily, I just had to get away from that really. Is it just a name or is it an alter ego? It feels just like me as a person, my music is about that, so there’s not one side of me that’s Saint Raymond and then the other that’s Callum. How old were you when you wrote your first song and what was it about? I was eleven and I wrote a song called Heartbroken. It was a banger! I might just re-release it, see what people think. For a first song it’s not actually that bad, but it’s just embarrassing that I was writing a song called Heartbroken at the age of eleven. Breaking my heart on the school playground. Never liked her anyway. You’re touring with Ed Sheeran in the autumn; are you a big fan? Yeah, I mean I think it’s amazing that he plays these

arenas just by himself, I think it’s a hard thing to do with just an acoustic guitar and he smashes it. I’ve had the privilege of getting to know Ed over the past few months and he’s just the most down-to-Earth guy. If you were going to choose anyone to collaborate with who would it be and why? Currently I really like the idea of working with Lorde, I think she’s wicked, but my dream is probably Bon Iver. Which new artists are you into right now? There’s a few actually. My friends Amber Run are wicked. Prides are great, I actually adore them, and got them to support me at Scala. Model Airplane as well. They’re really exciting. Glasgow 2014 is about to kick off; what’s your favourite thing about Glasgow? The crowd is always just crazy. Everyone is really up for it when I play Glasgow. I like that people just get rowdy, but not annoying rowdy, because sometimes crowds are either really rowdy or they’re dead. Glasgow crowds are quiet when they need to be and they’ll go mental when they have to. What are your plans for the rest of the year? Dropping my album. I’m just getting started on it, but it’s really exciting, and I’m looking forward to getting it out there . Saint Raymond’s Ghosts EP is out now. Check him out at this year’s T in the Park festival!

eorge Ezra’s debut album Wanted On Voyage drops on June 30th, so we gave him a ring while we were on the train and had a lovely chat about it. Go on, have an eavesdrop… Hey George. What are you upto today? Hey! I’m actually playing a little secret gig tonight with my band. We’ve done one little warm-up gig together before and now we’re playing at a place called Harlow in Essex, which is nice, because it’s down the road from where I grew up. I used to play there all the time, once a month or every other week, so it’s funny to be back. You say its a secret gig; have you kept it on the down low from friends and family? No and that’s probably one of my biggest mistakes! I don’t know how secret it is anymore. I also saw the Harlow Star tweeting about it today, so they’ve found out somehow! Wanted on Voyage is the title of your upcoming debut album strong work. What does it mean? The majority of the album was written when I went InterRailing around Europe by myself. ‘Wanted On Voyage’ used to be written on people’s cases when they went travelling, on boats and what not, but it was only put on their hand luggage as it was what they wanted with them on their person. I liked the idea of people wanting an album on their journey that was written on someone else’s journey. It’s also on Paddington Bear’s suitcase and I’m a big fan of Paddington Bear. Have you ever rocked a duffle coat like Paddington? Yeah, I don’t think I had a choice; that was a strong look when my mum was dressing me back in the day. I had the red wellies and everything!

In Conversation With...

GEORGE EZRA

What festival are you most looking forward to this summer after playing the BBC Introducing stage at Glasto last year? I’m playing Latitude and I used to love it when I was younger, so that’ll be a lot of fun. I’m playing a load of cool festivals actually – T In The Park, V Festival and a bunch in Europe. . Cool, what countries are you off to? I haven’t got a clue… I look at my calendar the week before the week I’m approaching and just do what I do. Every now and then I’ll flick ahead on my Google Calendar, but then I need to have a little moment to myself, because it just looks mental! Of all the festival line-ups you’re on, which person’s dressing room would you most want to raid? I’m playing Parklife on my birthday,

on the same stage as Snoop Dogg, and I’d love to sit in his dressing room. I wouldn’t even ask him any questions, I’d just observe him in his natural habitat, like David Attenborough. Sweet. When you have a rare bit of downtime, what do you get up to? I normally go back to Bristol, or to Hartford where I grew up, and I do absolutely nothing. I go see my friends, I do exactly what we always have done; drink too much one night and then watch Disney films the next. Sounds much like our weekends. Thanks George! Wanted On Voyage is released on June 30th and you can catch George at Edinburgh’s Liquid Room on June 13th

MTV EUROPE MUSIC AWARDS:

Most Memorable Moments Ever

A

s Glasgow gears up to host MTV EMA 2014 at the SSE Hydro, we’re throwing back to Europe Music Awards past, to bring you our top five most memorable moments… Miley Cyrus Smokes A Joint Onstage, Amsterdam, 2013 After causing chaos at the VMAs earlier in the year with THAT Robin Thicke duet, Miley paid homage to Amsterdam’s weed culture at the 2013 EMAs, by smoking a joint on stage. While the moment was understandably censored by MTV before the show aired, Miley took her usual approach and tweeted, “Sometimes in life you just gotta decide to not give a fuck.” Whilst we don’t approve, we certainly won’t forget the 21-year-old twerker’s antics anytime soon. Christina Aguilera Hosts, Edinburgh, 2003 Not so much a moment as a generally momentous occasion, the last time the EMAs came to Scotland they brought Christina Aguilera with them, and the Dirrty singer spent the whole night referring to our capital city as “Edin-burg”. Annoying. Christina also starred in a skit that saw her throw darts at a picture of Kelly Osbourne, who she was feuding with at the time, for reasons we’ve never quite worked out.

44Music

Katy Perry Rides A Cherry ChapStick, Liverpool, 2008 Katy Perry was so good at hosting MTV EMA 2008 in Liverpool that she was invited back the next year to present the Berlin show. However, her Liverpool entrance was impossible to beat, as the I Kissed A Girl singer rode into the Echo Arena atop a giant Cherry ChapStick. And she liked it. We think. Kanye West Practices His Stage Invading, Copenhagen, 2006 Before Kanye West ruined Taylor Swift’s big VMA moment in 2009, by telling the world Beyoncé deserved to win the award for Best Female Video, he did almost the same thing to duo Justice and Simian. The pair were collecting an award for their track We Are Your Friends, when Yeezy invaded the stage, claiming he should have won because Touch The Sky’s video “cost a million dollars and Pamela Anderson was in it”. Can you say “sore loser”? Sacha Baron Cohen Calls Madonna A Transvestite, Lisbon, 2005 Presenting the show as his alter ego Borat, Sacha Baron Cohen took the piss out of pretty much everyone, but his most memorable swipe was at Madonna. “It was very courageous of MTV to start the show with a genuine transvestite, he was very convincing,” he said, after Madge’s performance.

victoriA's secret takeover! When Victoria’s Secret Angels Adriana Lima and Candice Swanepoel flew into the brand’s Bond Street store in April, we knew there must have been good reason for the visit, but we could never have predicted how good. For the first time EVER, the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will take place in London, on December 2nd. While details of the show remain scarce – so far all we know is the date, the Earls Court location and that Adriana, Candice and Cara Delevingne will be amongst those walking – we’re hoping this means there’s scope for more UK stores. Currently making London, Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds and Kent more glamorous places, is a Scottish store too much to ask for? We think not – watch this space. The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will take place at London’s Earls Court on December 2nd

Alexander Wang x H&M November 6th may still be a while away, but following the big announcement at Coachella back in April that Alexander Wang is this year’s H&M guest designer, we can’t stop thinking of all the luxe sportswear we’ll be able to get our hands on. With clothing and accessories for both men and women in the works, as well as homewear, it’s set to be one of the most covetable high end/high street collabs to date. Better start queuing now… Alexander Wang’s collection for H&M will be available in selected stores and online from November 6th

EXCLUSIVE Dreamland

Interview AND Photoshoot Interview: Shauna McGregor Photography: Graeme Binnie

How did Dreamland first come about? Through my own love for vintage trends and styling, I began sourcing vintage clothing whilst interning in London and Paris whilst studying at Grays School of Art. I then started my first vintage label ‘Ruby & the Dream of Horses’ literally from my bedroom. However when I finally got to my 4th year I decided to create my Ready to Wear clothing line ‘Dreamland’, I decided to rename ‘Ruby & the Dream of Horses’ to ‘Dreamland Vintage’. It all kind of fell into place. That’s one thing I have learnt, don’t get too bogged down with one idea, just let things grow and roll with the punches.

What is your background? Where did you study and how did you get to where you are now? I am from bonnie Dundee, but I studied at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen. I interned in London and Paris too whilst studying which completely broadened my horizons. And I guess it kind of made me realise that I was working my ass off for these big designers and companies in London, for nothing but to slap it on my CV. I realised that I should be willing to work that hard for myself and believe in my own design aesthetics and label. Everyday I am so thankful I decided to believe I could do it. It's such a scary thing for anyone in the creative industry but sometimes you just have to shake it off and give it everything you have. And I'm talking everything; money, time, tears!

48STYLE

What are your main career highlights? Of course living the wild life in London and Paris was cool, but to be honest I feel I have really thrived since coming back to my home town. A massive highlight was taking my debut Ready to Wear Dreamland collection across to LA with my best friend. A lot of young designers will try to send it out out to celebrities and stylists, and run the risk of never seeing it again. But wearing it myself, walking down sunset boulevard and really enjoying that moment of satisfaction that I had worked so long for. But to be honest one of my main highlights is seeing how proud and probably amazed that my family and close friends are at how well the label is doing. Especially my wee nana, she’s my mascot. And she will kick ass if the industry gets a bit tough for me!

@Scotcampus

www.twitter.com/DREAMLANDBRAND @dreamlandclothing on Instagram www.facebook.com/dreamlandbrand

What's next for you? Continuing with the ‘Dreamland Vintage’ is my main focus just now, especially now that we sell on Asos Marketplace. I host a lot of Dreamland Vintage Pop Up Shops and I am currently booked for quite a few Vintage Fairs too. It’s all very exciting. However, next year will be a biggie. I aim to launch Dreamland – Ready to Wear. Think simplistic silhouettes, 1980’s inspired prints and the wildest colour palette on the planet. So the label will be very diverse- vintage and customised vintage, and then ready to wear collections from the mainline. Sir Phillip Green better watch out!

www.scotcampus.com

Are there any events coming up that you're particularly looking forward to? We will be at Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival this year which we are so excited about! We will have a mega Dreamland Vintage stall in the Vintage Flea Market. We will also be making many appearances across summer at the Granny Would Be Proud Vintage Fairs. And of course hosting our own Dreamland Vintage Pop Up Shops too!

hile there’s no denying who takes the best #belfie (‘bum selfie’, for anyone who hasn’t encountered the trend yet) in the Kardashian-Jenner household – hiya, Kim – there’s one member of the Klan who seems to be living and loving life in a bikini at the moment. Enter Kylie Jenner, the youngest of Kris and Bruce’s blended bunch, who’s been giving us swimwear envy since the winter months thanks to a constant stream of bikini photos from her Malibu beach house. Add to this the family trip to the Versace Mansion in Miami plus TWO weekends at Coachella where she may not have worked a two-piece, but her festival wardrobe was also totally en pointe, and we’ve got ourselves a brand new style crush. Here’s how to steal Kylie’s summer look just in time for your own vay-cay.

Kylie loves a cut-out and, on this vintage high-waisted bikini, it works for adding just a little sexiness. She is only 16, remember – gotta keep it classy. Such is the case for any age, ladies, so make sure your cut-outs still leave something to the imagination.

DO ACCESSORIsE WELL Don't Overdo It Ditch the rosary beads if they have no religious meaning to you and you bought them for £2 in River Island’s bargain bucket; all they’re going to achieve is dodgy tan lines. Sunglasses – preferably mirrored – are a must for perving behind and keeping your beach target guessing as to whether you’re even looking at her or not. Hats work for some guys, not so much for others, but if you can pull off a snapback then by all means go for it.

Do Put The prep in Don't Forget Your Sunscreen Eating well and exercising is always a good idea before baring all – not many of us can say we’d happily roll out of bed and straight on to the beach without a few weeks of prep beforehand. You’ll feel far more comfortable if you’re prepared for that Bora Bora beach party. Whether you do or don’t fall into the camp that cares, one thing everyone should invest in is a good sunscreen, because nobody wants to spend the week in bed with blisters. You know it makes sense!

Ladies With the World Cup kicking off on June 12th and Glasgow 2014 following suit on July 23rd, there really is no better time to try out the sports luxe trend. Now, we’re not talking tracksuits here – well, not quite. Ladies, think Marc By Marc Jacobs’ SS14 bomber jackets and runner shorts combos, Prada’s football socks slash legwarmers and Alexander Wang’s mesh crop tops. Y’know, like that ‘Parental Advisory’ slogan shirt that Beyoncé’s been wearing of late? If it’s good enough for Queen Bey…

“It Will Be Great To

SHOW THE WORLD THAT

GLASGOW

Can Put On A SHOW

Interview: Glasgow 2014 Games Maker Becky Owers Why did you decide to volunteer for Glasgow 2014? I wanted to volunteer because it's home – it's great that the Games are being held in Glasgow and I just wanted to be a part of it all. A few friends who were Games Makers at London 2012 told me about their amazing experience and I wanted to be a part of something like that and hopefully meet some new friends during it all. What was the application/interview process like? I applied online last year in February. It was really just a standard application form where you could outline three areas of preference as to where you would like to volunteer. I can't remember my exact three choices, but I mostly chose areas where I would potentially get to meet people and project the image of a friendly city, rather than a more behind the scenes role.

were interviewed individually. The interview was very thorough, but all the workforce team made us feel comfortable and relaxed. What will your role during the Games involve? I heard that I had been selected as a volunteer in November 2013 and I'm going to be based at Glasgow Airport as one of the first friendly faces that all the athletes, VIPs, Games Family Members and National and International dignitaries will see when they arrive in Glasgow. We will be providing them with a warm welcome and escorting them to their transport to either the Athletes Village or the Games Hotel – the Hilton in Glasgow city centre.

Next was a waiting game and I think I heard that I had been selected for interview in May or June. I chose a date in September for my interview since I was still studying abroad until August.

I'll be working for two weeks before the games, during them and for a few days afterwards, since athletes and VIPs etc. will be arriving before the games to settle in or train before the competition begins, or even just coming to Glasgow for a couple of days to watch certain events.

In September I had my interview at the Commonwealth offices in Glasgow. We had a group discussion and presentation first about the general areas that we had been selected to interview for – protocol – then we

" I'm really looking forward to the whole atmosphere across Glasgow and Scotland"

@Scotcampus

Photo Courtesy Of: http://nearyou.imeche.org/ What are you most looking forward to about the Games?

What impact do you think the Games will have on Glasgow both during and after?

I'm really looking forward to the whole atmosphere across Glasgow and Scotland during the games. There's going to be so much going on across the city like arts and cultural events alongside the main sporting events. It will be great to show the world that Glasgow can put on a show.

Hopefully Glasgow 2014 will inspire more kids and adults to take up and try more sport, especially now that all the Scottish facilities are in peak condition. Other aspects such as the Athletes Village becoming affordable housing, etc. will leave a great lasting impact on the city, as well as showing the world what a great place Glasgow is.

On a more personal note, I'm looking forward to my friend Dan coming up from England as he will be one of the medal-bearer volunteers and it will be great to see him, and show him around my home city, as well as making an Englishman try on a kilt! How do you think it will compare to the likes of London 2012 Olympics? I think Glasgow 2014 could be similar to London 2012 in a lot of ways in terms of getting the UK excited about sport and putting us on the world stage, as well as replicating the party atmosphere that took place in London‌ Except it will be better and bigger because the Glaswegians can party harder! There might be a few differences though since there is no Team GB in the Commonwealth Games. We'll all be cheering on our separate home teams whether it be Scotland, Wales or England, but it will be nice to support one another, or have some friendly rivalry too.

www.scotcampus.com

What would you be doing this summer if you weren't volunteering? If I wasn't volunteering then I would probably be travelling around the UK and Europe to see friends, working on job applications and going to a couple of festivals. What major event would you like to see Glasgow, or at least Scotland, host next? I'm excited for the MTV EMAs to be held in Glasgow later this year and I'm sure that will be an amazing night. It would be great if we could have more big events like this in Scotland since they are usually in London and it makes them hard to get to for a lot of people, whereas bringing them further north makes them more accessible for us. Maybe we could have the MOBOs here again soon or some more big sporting events like a UEFA final or something similar.

A Brief History Not sure how we’ve faired at Games gone by? Allow us to fill you in‌ Scotland is one of only six countries who have competed in every Commonwealth Games since the very first Empire Games, which were held in Ontario, Canada, in August 1930. This will be the third time Scotland has hosted the games, with Edinburgh previously hosting in 1970 and 1986. Our current total medal tally, before Glasgow 2014, is 355. That can be broken down to 91 gold, 104 silver and 160 bronze medals.

Our most successful Commonwealth athlete is shooter Alister Allan, who is the proud owner of three gold, three silver and four bronze medals, won between 1974 and 1994. At Delhi 2010 we took home nine gold, 10 silver and seven bronze medals. Our overall Commonwealth rank is 7th place, having come 10th at Delhi 2010, with our highest ever position being 4th place at Cardiff 1958, Edinburgh 1970 and Brisbane 1982.

have sex on

The Beach By Courtney Hendry

L

et me tell you one thing about having sex on holiday: no matter where you do it, who you do it with or how fantastic/depressing it was, please remember one thing; dispose of your used condom. I know I don't need to tell you to wrap it up, you're sensible enough to remember that. Surely…

Seriously though, no one enjoys coming home after a fun night to collapse onto their bed and find that one of their friends not only had sex in their bed, but left their used condom as a little present. There's always lots of talk about summer romances and being a bit more open than you'd be back home but no one ever thinks about us loved up folk. One thing that really grinds my

70LIFE

gears though is guys who assume if you say hello, what you RELALY mean is "hello and welcome to the party in my pants". No sir, you just happen to be sitting beside me whilst my friend is over at the bar grinding your sunburnt friend. Is there no such thing as simple chat anymore? Conversation between a boy and a girl in a sunny location without them calling you a 'tease' or saying you 'led them on' because you asked "so how long are you here for?".

Although I truly believe cheating is horrible and unnecessary (it always comes to light, so what's the point?), it seems I may be in the minority. Last summer, a survey found that 1 in 4 of us have cheated on our partner whilst on holiday. If you pack your bags for a summer holiday with pals fully planning

to get lucky then my advice is, break up with your guy or girl. It's that simple. Breaking up with someone because you’re just not that into them anymore is an okay thing to do, in fact it's much better than them finding out you cheated on them.

Please don't think I spend my whole holidays standing in the middle of the strip, clutching my relationship bible, screaming at all the little sex pests out there. I'm all for applauding people who like to explore new things on holiday. Whether it be on the beach (heads up, it's not sexy or romantic, just messy), or at the back of a club or in the hotel lobby just remember one thing…if there's gonna be affection, cover your erection. Oh, and remember NEVER leave it on someone else's pillow.

Setting Up

SHOP By Gavin Porter

Interview: Shop Front Author Samuel Best

T

he situation of Ben Hamilton in Sam Best’s debut novel Shop Front

will strike a chord with many. Graduating into an unfavourable job market, he struggles to find employment before finally managing to secure a role stacking shelves at the local supermarket. Stuck back living with his parents in the small town he grew up in, it isn’t long before trouble finds him.

While 25 year-old Sam doesn’t shirk from confronting some of the harsh realities of Austerity Britain, his novel does contain a youthful optimism. Sam recounts how he’d always enjoyed creative writing assignments when he was at school, and this continued when he decided to study English, Journalism and Creative Writing at University. “I really enjoyed my creative writing classes and I was getting good marks, so around 2nd or 3rd year I started to think this is something I might want to do for a career,” he explains.

72LIFE

@Scotcampus

“My tutors on the course were the authors Rodge Glass and Doug Johnston and they really helped me develop my writing. I was also greatly inspired by Alan Bissett. He’s from Falkirk and I’m from Linlithgow, which is close by, so he’s like the local boy done good. When I read Boyracers it blew me away, he wasn’t writing abstract, academic fiction, he was writing in Scots about growing up in a small town.” Like Bissett, Sam decided to write about what he knew best and drew on his small-town upbringing for his first novel. “Shop Front actually started out as a short story while I was at university,” says Sam. “I had this scene where the main character Ben gets introduced to his supermarket co-workers on his first day. I showed it to my tutor and he liked it, but said that nothing happened, so I put in another scene in a pub where some action takes place.” Sam decided he was on to something so spent the six months after graduation turning the short story into a fully-fledged novel in between job applications. “That experience definitely bled into the novel,” says Sam. “There’s a bit of a contrast though as in the book Ben feels he’s a bit above working in a supermarket, at least at the start, while I was just applying for anything I could!” One important theme running through Shop Front is the notion of Scottish identity. This mainly comes through in the pub-based ruminations of Niall, who befriends central character Ben. “I wrote the book three years ago, so while the referendum was on the horizon it isn’t the big issue it is today,” muses Sam. “I’ve been fortunate that the book has been released when it has, it’s nice timing.”

" I've been fortunate that the book has been released when it has, it's nice timing." Fledgling Press signed up Shop Front for publication in the summer of 2013, which began the process of editing

www.scotcampus.com

and honing the manuscript, before its release in March this year. However, what most concerned Sam about the novel’s publication was the front cover. “The thing is, people do judge a book by its cover, so I knew we had to get it right,” he says. “Fledgling Press brought in a designer and thankfully when he showed me what he came up with it was perfect, just the kind of thing I imagined. We only had to change one thing, the colour of the font or something.” It can be tough for new writers to get attention when competing with more recognised names, but Sam has found the internet to be an indispensible promotional tool. “It brings down the barrier between the writer and the reader,” he explains. “Twitter’s been especially useful. If you get someone who says they like this bit or don’t like that bit you can respond to them. You can also jump on topical hashtags that relate to the book and promote it that way.” As well as technology, public readings also play a part. “It kind of breaks the ice with the book if you see someone up there performing it,” says Sam. “They are also a great way of testing out material. I got a great piece of advice from Alan Bissett who said, ‘If it’s dead in your mouth it's dead on the page.’” Alongside pursuing his own writing, Sam has set up a creative writing journal for students, called Octavius. “Every university has a student newspaper for budding journalists to write for, but there wasn’t really anything for students who wanted to do creative writing. To be honest for the first issue I would have been happy if we’d got 50 submissions, but we ended up getting hundreds, which was amazing. We’ve put out two issues so far and submissions have just closed for another coming out in August.” While Shop Front is the story of a graduate struggling to find his way, it’s clear that Sam Best has found his calling as a writer. Not only that, by setting up Octavius he’s offering a platform for more young talents to make their mark.

Shop Front is out now on Fledgling Press. Visit Octavius at Octaviusmagazine.com

Spotlight on… Ross McBride Product Design Engineering Student @ Strathclyde University

Tell us a bit about your course and why chose it

Which stage of designing do you enjoy most?

Choosing to study Product Design Engineering was a simple one. I have always been interested in design, and how things work, therefore a course that teaches you design thinking and engineering was ideal. Each skill gained has provided me with the foundation to carry forward into my industrial projects and the internships.

Concept Generation. It's a really exciting stage where you can sit with a blank sheet of paper, some market research and start designing products, that one day may become reality.

How did you gain your internship with design company Filament PD? Through contacts in the industry, from a previous internship, I was fortunate enough to meet with the Directors of Filament PD. They were interested in my ideas and in turn I created an opportunity for myself to work with the team. What are you currently working on?

If money was no object, what would you design? Movie props. It would be great to have Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible: 20, produce a futuristic gadget that I designed. I'm sure the Oscars would introduce Product Design awards, right? What’s the best advice you ever received? I can't pinpoint one piece of advice that I have been given, but I have been fortunate enough to be surrounded by some inspirational people who have guided me through the last couple of years, giving me advise and wisdom. They know who they are and I am very grateful, thank you!

I’m currently developing my individual and industrial projects for university and the launch of BitBead, my first official product.

TIP: Don't pursue an internship in Product Design

What design do you have on your phone cover?

Pursue an internship because you are prepared

ack in, oh we don’t know, 2001, the idea of hosting your own website where you talk about anything from yourself to the catwalks, gaming to cupcakes, all seemed a bit alien. Perhaps we were all still daunted by the vastly undiscovered power of the World Wide Web. However, fastforward to 2014, and it seems there are few places in life you can get without a WWW footprint to rival Mark Zuckerberg’s. While you probably DON’T want a perspective employer to be perusing your Facebook photos (hello, privacy settings), a well-kept blog has the ability to make your prospects skyrocket. Don’t believe us? Check out these success stories…

Ashley Madekwe Blogs at: Ashley-ringmybell. blogspot.com Profession: Actress While you probably know Ashley best from her role as Ashley Davenport in Revenge, she was on Scotcampus’ radar long before that, thanks to her Ring My Bell fashion blog. While back in 2011 she was busy showing us how to look hot on the high street whilst attending auditions, now her blog is filled with oh-so-enviable snaps of her rocking Chanel, Louboutins, Paige Denim… we want this girl’s wardrobe and her job. Please.

Leandra Medine Blogs at: Manrepeller.com Profession: Blogger & Author When Leandra Medine started her Man Repeller blog, it was a place to vent about men that didn’t understand fashion (or her), and to reassure the rest of

us that Birkenstocks are cool and culottes would come back in style eventually. Look at the runways this season and what do you see? CULOTTES AND BIRKENSTOCKS, PEOPLE! Now receiving far more fashion week invitations than she can shake a stiletto at, with actual staff helping her run the site – including the super-cute Boy Repeller – Leandra released a book last year and is no longer repelling men. Except her husband.

Portis Wasp Blogs at: Myportiswaspsays.com Profession: He tells us all the time, but it’s too complicated to remember Mr Wasp’s Scotcampus fashion columns have been keeping ya’ll entertained for the past year, but Portis’ super successful blog has also led to writing work for the likes of MTV Style, and he has some very exciting creative projects currently in the pipeline. How I bagged my

dream job ...In Comedy LARRY DEAN Interview By Courtney Hendry

B

eing a comedian doesn't sound like an easy job. Imagine standing up and trying to make strangers laugh. Imagine no one laughs. 24-year-old comedian and 2013's Scottish Comedian of the Year, Larry Dean, is a bit more optimistic about his work, ‘when an audience doesn't laugh at a joke, or at all,

you can usually hear the other comedians laughing at the back of the room, as we love to watch each other fail. So no matter what, you end up getting a laugh, all be it at your expense". Larry tells us about his journey in the comedy world and why you should avoid drunken heckling at all costs.

How did you get into comedy?

EMPLOYMEMNT

I had been considering studying drama at university but didn't like the idea of spending 3 years in a leotard, so I just typed into Google "Comedy Degree" and they actually had one in Southampton. The degree itself was more academic than I expected but I started putting myself forward for open mic nights and started running my own comedy gig in Southampton and from that I made the right contacts to start gigging regularly. What's been the best part of your experience in comedy? The best would probably be between winning Scottish Comedian Of The Year or performing at the O2 Academy to raise money for the Clutha helicopter crash victims’ families, it was a brilliant, typically Glaswegian night. So how did it feel to win Scottish Comedian of the Year last year? It was great. It was especially great as I never let my family come and see me perform. They didn't come

86EMPLOYMENT

see me that night, but when I got to take the trophy home they all admitted that they had thought I must have been shit at comedy until I got an award. It’s all about proving the family wrong.

around all month doing as many gigs a day as possible. Last year at Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival, I done 140 shows in 24 days.

Do you enjoy performing in Glasgow or does being home make it more daunting?

Not as much as I thought I would. It does happen though and it’s not a big deal when it's someone who is saying coherent sentences. That is fine and is easy to deal with, it can even make the gig more fun. Too often though you get drunk idiots shouting random unfunny things when you’re in the middle of a routine and it just ruins it for everyone, and the same people who do that will come up to you afterwards and say "I was trying to help you out". If you are reading this and you're thinking that's the kind of thing I would do, please stop coming to comedy gigs.

It’s a lot more scary performing in Glasgow as it's a home gig. But the audience up here are brilliant, and down to earth. Some places you go can be judgmental or uptight about what you say. Glasgow audiences just like you as long as you're 'a funny guy'. What advice would you give to other young aspiring comedians? Don't do it, there is too many comedians on the circuit and we need the gigs/attention. If you do really want to do it though, you have to be prepared to travel a lot. I've driven over 100,000 miles in the past 4 years to get to gigs, and when you’re staying put in the same city for a festival be prepared to run

Do you get much heckling and how do you put up with it?

You can catch Larry from 19th21st June at The Stand Comedy Club in Glasgow or follow him on Twitter @larrydeancomedy

SUBBUTEO PITCH Interview: Simon Bristow, Associate Director/Head of Sport at Mischief PR

W

here will you be watching the 2014 Fifa World Cup? Even if your answer was ‘Brazil’, it’s unlikely that you’ll be as close to the action as Simon Bristow, Associate Director/Head of Sport at Mischief PR. With The Football Association amongst his clients, Simon is flying to Brazil on

June 7th to set up shop for the month, working with players and management to fully engage locals in The Beautiful Game. He shares his career journey so far, from pitch to press, with Scotcampus… What's the earliest thing you remember wanting to be 'when I grow up'? I wanted to be a footballer. Not because of the glitz and glamour of the lifestyle, but because I loved kicking a ball around whenever I could, and would have given anything to be able to do that day in day out.

EMPLOYMEMNT

What did you study at university and was it always with a view of getting into sports PR? I studied Communication Studies as, having realised the footballer dream wasn't going to come true, I'd decided that a career in PR was what I wanted. At that point I hadn't thought about combining my career with my love of sport, but PR was something that really interested me. Did you take any gap years for travelling or work experience? Before I went to university I travelled around New Zealand – I have family there so decided a break to visit them before starting my studies again would be a nice thing to do. After uni, I spent about six months doing unpaid work experience at a small PR agency

88EMPLOYMENT

in Nottingham, and it was a great way to learn the basics from people who had been doing it for years. It definitely helped me get my first proper job. What was your first job in PR? My first proper job was at a mid-sized agency in Birmingham. My sole client was a new build house builder, which wasn't that glamorous! But, again, the opportunity gave me the chance to learn more about the industry and hone some of the key skills. I must have written about a thousand press releases in my two years there and it's a skill that I still use today. How did your career path then lead you to the position you're in now? After a couple of years in my first job I decided I wanted to learn more about general consumer PR. I joined another agency in Birmingham, but quickly found myself working on another new build house builder! At the end of my probation period I decided it was the right moment to follow the real dream and get into sports PR. I took myself off to London and went in and out of every

recruitment agency I could find. Not one of them thought I'd get a job in sport as I had no relevant experience, so I decided to find a job myself. I had my CV printed onto a Subbuteo pitch, posted it off to about 15 agencies that did sport, and ended up getting six interviews. A few weeks later I was starting work at a proper sports specialist agency. From that moment I was on the path to where I find myself today. I had six amazing years at that agency that culminated in working at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

" The beauty of PR is that no two days are the same." What clients do you work with now and what does your job entail on a day-to-day basis? At the end of 2012 I joined Mischief to run the agency’s work with The Football Association; being a huge football fan it was an opportunity I couldn't turn down. The beauty of PR is that no two days are the same. One day I could be sat in the office

@Scotcampus

“I Had My CV Printed On A

writing proposals or press releases, the next I'll be at an event, the next I'll be managing a media day with a celebrity of some description. It's certainly not all glamour though – PR is one of the industries that never stops and when you're agency side you are always on when it comes to your clients. The hours can be very long and there will be a few weekends when you'll find yourself working. What has the run-up to the World Cup been like for you? It's been a very busy few weeks. As well as having the World Cup on the horizon we've had the FA Cup final and are also running a big campaign aimed at getting more people playing football this summer. The FA is a very unusual client in the sense that the business does so much. For example, Wembley has already hosted five football matches this month, the England men's, women's, Under 21s and Under 19s have all been playing and training at various places around the world, and then you factor in that The FA governs football at all levels so is dealing with daily issues.

www.scotcampus.com

What will your job involve when you're actually in Brazil?

the community projects we'll be working during the tournament.

A lot of the work we do for The FA is aimed at a grassroots level of the game and engaging and educating a new diverse audience. In Brazil our role will be to continue to do this by highlighting all the great work The FA is doing off the pitch during the tournament. Plans are all confidential at the moment but the players and management will be doing a lot of work to engage the local communities in Rio, Manaus, Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte. There will be around 100 media, mostly from the sports and football titles, following the England team so our job will also be to make sure that other media are covering what is happening – everyone from Radio 1 to Heat magazine and lifestyle blogs are key.

What's been your career highlight so far?

What are you most looking forward to about the trip? The trip is going to be a really unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience. A World Cup in Brazil is obviously going to be amazing. It's a country that lives and breathes football, after all. However, I'm most looking forward to some of

I've been incredibly lucky to do some amazing things and work with some amazing people during my career, and sometimes I can't believe it's all actually happened. Working at London 2012 and being based on the Olympic Park was probably the highlight though. The Games were perhaps the most spectacular thing to happen in the UK in my lifetime and I was lucky enough to be right at the heart of it. I remember one day I was walking around the Park and I saw a little boy crying and screaming at his parents that he didn't want to leave. I felt like that boy every day; it was just the most unbelievable experience. What would you be doing if you weren't in sports PR? I'd be a professional Lego builder.

JOB PROFILE:

A&E Staff Nurse Gael McLennan

G

ael McLennan is an A&E Staff Nurse at Crosshouse Hospital in

Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Having honed her craft all the way to Masters level at Glasgow Caledonian University, as well as working in Glasgow’s Southern General all the way through her course, we thought there was no better person to quiz about preparing for the profession… When did you decide that you wanted to be a nurse?

EMPLOYMEMNT

I didn’t, actually, I went to uni to study Social Sciences. While I was there I was working as a bank auxiliary nurse, because my aunt is a sister in the Southern General, and she offered to get me a job. It’s really good money for a part-time job while you’re a student, but I found that I loved it, and I really wasn’t enjoying my course. It made sense to switch. How easy did you find it to transfer on to the nursing course? It was a nightmare unfortunately; I had to leave university completely and apply to a different one (Glasgow Caledonian University). I stopped Social Sciences after first year, but then went back into first year in the September, on a Nursing course. How did your experiences of the classroom compare to your auxiliary work experience? It was good having the auxiliary experience, because it makes you very aware of what you’re going into, whereas a lot of people who go straight from school into Nursing at

90EMPLOYMENT

university have an image of it that is a lot more glamorous than the job actually is. If you enjoy working in an elderly ward, as I did as an auxiliary, then you’re probably also going to enjoy the more acute side of things. What was the most important thing you learned at university? At uni we learned all about anatomy, physiology and pharmacology, but we didn’t actually learn too much about nursing itself, which is why 50% of your course is made up of practical placements. Between that and my bank shifts, that’s what I really take to my job, because eventually you take the anatomy and whatnot for granted. What you really have to think about is how to tell someone their relative is dying or dead, how to deal with cleaning a dead body, and other things you can only learn by doing them. Do you think your MA degree aided you in getting a job? I think so. I don’t think the Masters aided me in being a better nurse or being good at what I do, but I think it definitely aided me in getting the

job I have now, as that level of effort is somewhat impressive and shows a good work ethic. You went to Africa to nurse during one of your university summers; how was that? I was subject to levels of poverty that cease to exist here and having to turn people away from A&E when they had no money in their pocket, even if they were unconscious, was just the most awful thing. The nurses there are very skilled and can do a lot more than nurses here. They deliver babies, which I participated in, and it was surreal. How do you see your nursing career panning out over the next few years? In nursing you can either go up the grades in a management route, which involves taking charge of departments and eventually the hospital, or you can go up the clinical route. That involves being able to see and treat minor injuries, then major injuries, prescribing medications and doing a lot of the work of a senior doctor. I’d like to take the clinical route.

hile Conor’s been a little too busy to tackle any sharks or skydives this issue, we’ve been thinking of our own ultimate summer activities, that we want to check off our bucket list before the new semester begins. Here are our ideas to get your own list started and make sure you tweet us your additions @Scotcampus!

1. Try a new festival that we’ve never been to before. 2. Dye our hair all the colours of the rainbow, even if it’s just for a weekend.

9.

Go camping in a teepee.

10. Have a water fight complete with water balloons and Super Soakers. 11. Get good at vintage shopping. 12. Host a BBQ and talk someone else into doing all the cooking. 13

Go zorbing.

17. Go to at least one theme park and start the day on their scariest ride. 18. Learn to cook so we have at least one signature dish we’re really good at. 19. Volunteer and feel really good about it. 20. Find an excuse for sparklers and fireworks. 21. Make an actual mixtape… Right after we find the equipment to do it with.

3. Tie-dye our own T-shirts, dresses, shorts and general festival attire. 4. Get a real, old school pen pal from another country – email doesn’t count. 5.

Learn how to surf.

6.

Crowd surf.

7. Get a new pet (but remember they’re for life, not just for summer). 8. Try veganism and give it up if we don’t like it.

92BACKSIDE

22. Read all of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s books. 23. 14. Go to a country we’ve never been to before. 15. Go to a continent we’ve never been to before. 16. Practise photography – and not with an iPhone.

Go on a roadtrip. Shotgun!

24. Watch some Commonwealth Games events in the flesh instead of on TV. 25. Consider a tattoo. Design a tattoo. Book the tattoo, get all the way to the tattoo shop and decide it’s just not our thing.

THE THIGH GAP PRO BLEM By Kirsty Gallacher

N

ever before has an empty space, an absence of ANYTHING, caused so much debate. Whether you have one or you don’t, if you prefer girls with or without them, this short-shorts-based time of year only emphasises the problem of the thigh gap. I feel insane even writing those two words on paper. A few years ago the problem didn’t exist, or at least it hadn’t been given a name and had its hashtag – #thighgap – banned on Instagram due to its promotion of eating disorders. So how did we end up living in a society where being able to drive a truck through the middle of your thighs was a good thing?

Some like to point the finger at the earliest of our influences: Barbie.

94BACKSIDE

If scaled to the height of 5ft 6in, her waist would be just 20in, her hips 29in and her bust 27in. She’d certainly have a thigh gap, but is her plastic presence in childhood really the cause of our often problematic relationships with our own bodies?

American artist Nickolay Lamm seems to think so. The creator of Lammily, a ‘normal’ Barbie with ‘normal’ female proportions and brown hair instead of a blonde mane, crowdfunded his campaign to put the new doll into production and reached his target within 24 hours. Lammily is now available for pre-ordering, shipping in November.

However, there’s something I find quite offensive about the number of fashion and pop culture

websites hailing Lammily ‘normal’. While I agree it’s terrifying that anyone aspires to a thigh gap, I wouldn’t say I’m a mutant because I have one, despite my hangover munchies accounting to an entire loaf of bread and Kettle Chips by the bucket load. Exercise, eat well five days out of the week, and chances are you’ll have air between your legs too.

Calling somebody out for being too skinny can be just as destructive as calling them fat, but nobody thought about that when Nicole Richie’s bikini was hanging off her back in 2006, did they? There is no normal anymore and while an extreme diet of any sort, whether it be supersized or super skinny, will cause problems, think before you assume a #thighgapper has a problem. Maybe, just maybe, they wish that thigh gap could close in.
