TOP OF THE COMPS

It's easy to overlook the odd competition or freebie when you're caught up in the buzz at the SECC, but you’ll kick yourself if you miss out on entering to win these prizes!

SEE PAOLO NUTINI LIVE Scotland’s home-grown heart throb has already sold out the SSE Hydro on the 27th of October, but that hasn’t stopped Stivy’s from nabbing two tickets to give away to one lucky Freshers’ Festival visitor. They’re even throwing in a goody bag to make sure you have a good time (as if Paolo Nutini’s not enough). All you have to do is register at the Stivy’s stall and you could be in the crowd at the end of October.

CAMPUS KARAOKE Between 2pm and 3pm on Thursday and Friday, Campus are taking over the Relentless Main Stage with their own brand of frat-style karaoke. We’re pretty confident you won’t miss the mayhem, but you might not realise what’s at stake. As well as giving away a coveted Campus hoodie to every singer who braves the stage, they’re rewarding top performers with free meal vouchers.

WIN THE ULTIMATE VIP GIRLS DAY OUT Lambrini are going big this year: offering an all expenses paid girls’ day out in Glasgow to the luckiest lady at the festival, oh, and her four besties. The prize begins with fun and photos in the morning, followed by a makeover by Benefit Cosmetics at House of Fraser, a goody bag worth over £100, and a chauffeur driven limo ride to your VIP booth at Kushion, where you can party the night away. To try your luck, swing by the Lambrini stand.

SOAKED IN SOOP Dragon Soop are so sure you’ll love their delicious, caffeine-fuelled creations that they’re giving away 12-can crates to attendees ready to prove their worth. And nothing’s guaranteed to make you more popular with your fellow freshers than a crate of free booze! Just tweet @FreshersFest and tell us why you deserve it. If you win us over, you’ll be able to pick up your bevvies directly from the Dragon Soop stall. Remember, winners will have to show ID to claim prizes containing alcohol.

FIND YOUR FRESHERS’ FEST

SPIRIT ANIMAL

THE BEAR Winter is coming, and the bear must eat its fill while food is plentiful. Freshers’ Festival has loads of restaurants and food stalls, and if you’re here to make the most of them, your spirit animal is certainly the bear. Dig in, bears, it’s beans for the rest of October.

Everyone approaches our Freshers’ Festival in a different way, whether they’re in it for the freebies, scouting for new haunts or just hanging out with friends. To celebrate the diversity of our student attendees, we’ve sat down, meditated, and divined the spirit animals that will guide you on your journeys.

p

THE LONE WOLF

THE LION

The lone wolf knows that bars are for socialising and Freshers’ Festival is about making the most of the bountiful stalls, and the lone wolf never leaves hungry. The wolf arrives alone, swiftly identifies its targets, and observes carefully before moving in for the kill.

If you’re coming in a big group of brand new BFFs, ready to devour every opportunity, then your spirit animal is the king of the jungle. The lion forges close bonds with its pride as it roams the SECC savannah, every member has their eyes peeled for the best stalls, and nobody gets left behind.

THE SALMON For the salmon, drink isn’t a mere tasty freebie: it’s the essence of life. The waters are running deep at Freshers' Festival this year, so we’re expecting plenty of fish. Luckily nobody’s better at fighting the tides than the salmon.

AFTER

all your feedback last year, we've made a real effort to attract the best jobs and opportunities to Freshers' Festival 2014. As you might expect from an event as gigantic as this, we're welcoming some of the country's biggest employers. Energy giants EDF are here to headhunt potential candidates for their range of internship and industrial placement schemes and the British Army are ready to draft in any candidates looking for challenging roles across a surprising number of skillsets. We've even got representatives from independent organisations that want to ensure you make the most of whichever opportunities you opt for. Unite the Union are keen to find new activists ready to guard workers' interests, while RateMyPlacement.co.uk is an innovative new business that exists solely to help you find the best work placements on the market. stalls are full to the brim with tasty treats. There’s energy drinks, soft drinks, hard drinks (for those of you with ID) plus a big selection of savoury snacks and even full-on meals if you’ve timed your trip right. So let’s talk tactics.

on the day, they want you coming back for more when you next hit Glasgow’s great venues. That’s why you’ll find so many superb prizes on offer, ranging from gig tickets to crates of drink. So stay focussed, keep your eyes on the prizes, and you could be laughing for the rest of the term.

Start by sweeping the food supplies for the best freebies. With food samples a plenty on the menu - not to mention a chopstick challenge with Just Eat - follow your nose and be ready to pounce!

With the serious business of bounty hunting out of the way, it’s time for a tipple over at our dedicated Watering Hole. Have your ID’s ready because the queues form quickly, and the last thing you’ll want is a line of thirsty freshers’ behind you.

Once you’ve eaten your fill, it’s time to wash it all down with the drinks on offer. Soft drinks will do the best job of revitalising you, particularly energy drinks like Relentless and SUPER!NATURAL, which is great: because you’ll need your energy for phase three.

Once you’re up front, pace yourself. There’s loads of great brands to discover, Halewood International alone has nine, including favourites like Lambrini, Crabbie’s and Tsingtao, so make sure you leave room to give every bevvy a chance.

With your basic needs satisfied, you’re ready to scout out discounts, freebies and competitions; because our food and drink exhibitors aren’t only here to tempt your taste buds

Don’t forget that our food and drink area has a dedicated bar and eatery, just in case you get inspired and want to dictate your own menu. And, of course, if you have any room left!

BARS & CLUBS

THE

expert mixologists at Scotcampus HQ have been hard at work on their greatest creation, and now you’ll finally be able to sample it. The cocktail of bars at clubs we’ve whipped up at this year’s Freshers’ Festival is like any good bevvy; a balanced creation that’s fruity, sharp and flavoursome in equal measure. And let us tell you, this one’s got a kick to it. So get your diaries open and keep your wallets firmly closed, because these stalls are all about showing you what they do, and the excellent entertainment they showcase every night of the week in this deliciously decadent city. Forget New York, because Glasgow’s never been known to take 40 winks. Whether you’re looking for a casual hangout where you can relax with your pals or the biggest club nights in Glasgow city centre, you’ll find a venue that fits on our club corridor:

a row of tip-top venues just waiting to tempt you with all manner of club nights and evening delights. Check out the clubbing action at the Colours stall, which has been showcasing the best talents on the dance music scene since 1989, or pop over to Wild Cabaret to hear about their totally unique night Wicked in the Round. But don’t forget to pick up a free Craic card from the Malone’s stall. It entitles you to unbelievable food and drinks deals for the rest of the year. Bonanza! Once you’ve sampled everything that’s on offer at their Freshers’ Festival stalls, we recommend all adults of legal age go on an epic bar crawl to check them out in the wild. You’ll have a rip-roaring time!

PUT YOUR HANDS TOGETHER FOR…

THE RELENTLESS MAIN STAGE! The hub of the festival is back, and it's supercharged with the power of Relentless, making the Main Stage better than ever this year. It’s boasting a huge range of entertainment to keep you from overindulging on the food and drink that's flowing from our stalls.

DJ BATTLES In the afternoons, things will be heating up when our DJs take to the stage at 12pm to do battle. The first rule of the Battle of the DJs is... actually, there are no rules, just two DJs representing their clubs in a no-holds barred battle to the (almost) death. Which DJs will mix, cut and scratch their way to glory? You’ll have to check out the Relentless Main Stage to find out. You’re bound to pick up some tunes for your next playlist too.

KARAOKE And if all this music has inspired you, you can let your lungs loose with Campus Karaoke from 2pm; with prizes on offer for everyone who braves the stage. With meal vouchers on offer you’ll have the chance to sing for your supper!

BEST OF T

At T in the Park this year, we rounded up our favourite Glasgow bands from the festival and coaxed them over to the SECC, where they'll be putting on a special set just for you. Tijuana Bibles have been making waves with their blues rock sound, and they've been selected to kick off our festival off in style. Taking their cue form the likes of BRMC and Alabama 3, their deep vocals and dirty guitar riffs will take to the stage at 10.30am on Thursday. We hope you've all got your dancing shoes on, because next up are the Moon Kids, fresh from their appearance on BBC Alba's Rapal, who'll be following up Tijuana Bibles with their unique 'fairground pop' sound. On Friday, the stage will be jolted into life by the inspiring electro of Atom Tree; whose atmospheric sound will make you feel like you've got your own personal movie score as you explore the festival. Once they fade out, Medicine Men arrive to pick up the pace. And if you're not sucked in by their psych rock and pumping dance refrains, you'll be spat out by their bass lines. So be prepared!

BEST DRESSED WITH

BETTY & BEE WE'VE

been pretty full-on about how packed with goodies our stalls are this year (what can we say, we're excited!) But what we've been keeping under wraps is that we're unleashing some special guests into the crowd too. BFF business partners and fashion mavericks Forever Yours Betty and Bee Waits For No One have been sent on a mission to spot the best-dressed freshers at the festival on Thursday, 2nd October and give them the props they deserve via our social media channels. Because we're all about giving credit where it's due, and celebrating the amazing people

who make these two days special. So whether you're keen to show off your cutting edge threads, reveal a new trend you're going to be rocking on campus this year, or let the world know that your favourite accessory is on its way back, keep an eye out for our fabulous friends and prepare to give them a twirl. They'll beam you out to our student community across the country for your five minutes of fame. Of course, if you just want to know all the best places to shop in Glasgow or get the lowdown on what's hot this season, they're always happy to share their wealth of knowledge with Scotland's bright young things.

YOUTH ON THE MOVE:

BROADENING SCOTLAND’S HORIZONS

AT

Scotcampus, we like to keep ourselves at the centre of Scotland’s student community, but that doesn’t mean we don’t think globally. In fact, we’ve been on the hunt for exciting international exhibitors to join our jobs and opportunities stalls at Freshers’ Fest: and we couldn’t have hoped for a better partner than Youth on the Move. Youth on the Move is a European Commission initiative that’s here to help Scotland’s students benefit from the range of study and work opportunities available across the continent. So if you’ve been bit by the travel bug, or you’re hungry for new experiences, you can’t miss the ultimate employment hub. The long-term goal of the initiative is to increase youth employment and forge bonds between Scotland and the rest of Europe; but right now it’s all about opening up new avenues for you to explore, whether that’s through an exchange programme, an internship or simply sharing the latest news from the job markets in the EU’s 28 member states.

Among their schemes is the ever-popular Erasmus+ exchange scheme, which is a three to 12 month spell studying in a major European city, incorporating an optional (and complementary) traineeship period. There are even grants available for successful applicants. Thinking ahead to the end of your course? Youth on the Move has you covered here too. Their EURES portal is designed to help graduates look for work across the EU, and the ‘Your First EURES job’ scheme provides travel, moving and training expenses for Scots looking to work abroad. And in the meantime, they have traineeships and placements to help you get the experience you need. So head over to our jobs and opportunities area to find out more from the friendly folks at the European Commission’s Youth on the Move stands. You never know where it might take you.
