estival season is upon us again and I for one can’t wait to be spending my weekends bopping around in a field… preferably a sunny one. Last year’s festival highlights for me included a scorching Saturday in July spent dancing to Labrinth, Katy B and Maya Jane Coles at High Definition in Essex, the once in a lifetime three hours of Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z at Wireless – complete with a 30-second appearance from Rihanna – and a somewhat muddier weekend at Beacons Festival in Leeds where I actually slept in a tent. Albeit a pre-erected one. This year my hitlist includes Radio 1’s Big Weekend, which Scott Mills gives us all the gossip on over on p30, as well as a return to Wireless for the mighty combo of Kanye West and Pharrell Williams. Whichever field floats your boat, from Balado to Seaclose Park on the Isle of Wight, head over to p10 and win the chance to be there for free! Music and mud not really your bag? Never fear, we’ve got a whole bunch of alternative weekend plans nestled in this issue, from travelling to volunteering, writing, paragliding and baking some sweet Easter treats. Enjoy, mes amis – see you in June. -Jennifer Lynn

The Word ‘Millennial’ Socks Our number one festival essential is a hefty supply of appropriate socks. Thick, knee-high options work for wellies, while glittery lurex numbers are our favourite for getting this season’s socks ‘n’ sandals trend down pat. Just be sure you pack a plentiful supply – there’s nothing worse than trench foot…

Kendall Jenner Cooler than her elder Kardashian sisters, Kendall is more than keeping up, after a string of runway appearances at the AW14 Fashion Weeks. From her debut at Marc Jacobs, to ruling Chanel’s Supermarket Sweep with soon to be brother-in-law Kanye West watching from the front row, Kendall is our new fashion (and life) icon.

Tinder With news that Tinder profiles can now be verified, we’re ashamed to admit we’ve been spending far too much time lurking on there, in the hope that Harry Styles might right swipe us. Time to put down the phone and get a REAL life…

Interview: Clean Bandit

We’ve just been in Cuba making our next video and then we flew straight from there to Amsterdam to do radio, so I’m a bit exhausted and jetlagged,” says Neil Amin-Smith, Clean Bandit’s resident strings God. Clearly riding the crest of the band’s incredible wave of success this year, Neil remains upbeat despite being rundown, telling us, “We’ve got a really exciting next six months lined up off the back of Rather Be. “Our festival schedule is massive and we’re getting to play in countries we never thought we’d be able to, like Germany and some European festivals. We’ve got tentative plans to go to the US at some point this year too, but we don’t want to get too ambitious too quickly.” Rather Be is, of course, Clean Bandit’s number one single, which continues to set the charts and the airwaves on fire. Describing the incredibly catchy track as “a dance love song”, Neil explains how it came to light. “We wrote the song with Jimmy Napes, who’s written stuff with Disclosure and Sam Smith, some of their big hits,” he says. “Last summer we started playing it in our sets at the festivals and even though nobody had ever heard it before, by the end of the song everyone would be singing along even harder than the songs that had already been released. That gave us an inkling that it might do something.” Filming the video in Tokyo was a whole new experience for Neil and bandmates Grace, Jack and Luke, one which got them into a little trouble… “I’d never been to Japan before and we did have a few little

www.scotcampus.com

cultural misunderstandings,” says Neil. “We filmed a scene where Grace and I and a bunch of Japanese extras were dancing on a train. Obviously on the tube in London you don’t see that many people dancing, but it wouldn’t be rude or offensive if people did, whereas in Japan it turns out it is. Even to make any kind of noise or to talk on the phone is seen as bad and obviously we had a speaker playing the song so we could dance, and old Japanese men were shouting at us, and one of the extras had to negotiate with them. “A couple of them got off and we ended up staying on till the end of the line without planning to, but we found ourselves on the beach, when we hadn’t even realised there was a beach in Tokyo. That’s how the shots on the beach came about!” Now fully focused on the release of debut album New Eyes, Neil says, “There’s quite a mix of different influences on the album, partly due to the people we’ve worked with. We worked with Stylo G on some dancehall stuff, which is one flavour, and we’ve done a song with Dizzo who’s an American rapper. Oh and a song with MNEK. There are a lot of different styles in the stuff that hasn’t been released yet.” Still working with different vocalists on every track, with Rather Be’s Jess Glynne having gone on to hit number one again by featuring on Route 94’s My Love, Neil explains why he thinks the set-up works so well. “I think having all the different vocalists means we have different influences on all the songs and it keeps it exciting,” he says. “We have a couple of great vocalists who perform with us live, one of whom – Elisabeth Troy – is

also on our album.” Turning our attention back to festivals, Neil cites “loo paper and cash” as his essentials for surviving the weekend. “Cash is best thing you can take, because then you can buy everything you need, and cash machine queues at festivals are always the worst,” he says. And as for the completely unreliable British weather? He’s not a fan.

“I completely fail to keep my spirits up when it rains at festivals,” says Neil. “I went to one where I hadn’t taken any shoes other than a pair where the soles had worn down until they were completely smooth. I couldn’t walk anywhere without being held up by at least two people. I hated it!” So, if you happen to be at T In The Park this summer and see someone sliding around unhappily in the mud, we’d recommend you stay clear. It’s most likely Neil and, for once, there’ll definitely be somewhere he’d rather be! Clean Bandit’s debut album New Eyes is out on May 12th. They play Glasgow’s King Tut’s on May 8th and are playing more festivals than you can shake a stick at this summer. Check out our festival guide from p10 for more details!

It’s not all about festivals this month ya’ll… though we do really, really like them. Seek non-field based entertainment with a little help from Vans, Nightwalk, Foxes and more beautiful, beautiful people.

Visit The Dark Side

Let Go For The Night Foxes was kind enough to give Scotcampus all the chat on her debut album in our February issue and now she’s playing a Glorious gig at Edinburgh University’s Teviot Underground on May 24th, followed by a night at King Tut’s on May 30th. Go along, take her some cake (Foxes LOVES cake) and forget that your youth is running out – because it’s only just begun. Tickets priced at £10 (Edinburgh) and £8 (Glasgow) available from ticketmaster.co.uk

Get Your Skates On Vans Warped Acoustic Basement Tour hits Glasgow’s O2 ABC2 on April 27th, bringing with it Geoff Rickly of Thursday fame, Koji, Rob Lynch and Brian Marquis. The perfect warm up for this year’s Warped Tour, we’re sure you’ll agree! Tickets priced at £10, available from ticketmaster.co.uk

Just Dance London-based DJ extraordinaire and winner of Muzik Magazine’s Best Breakthrough DJ, Erol Alkan hits up Dundee’s Reading Rooms on April 18th, for what will most definitely be the party of a lifetime. Nightwalk – Angie Koorbanally’s bi-annual showcase of Scottish fashion talent – is back at The Arches, Glasgow, on May 21st. With designer submissions still taking place as we went to print, the line-up will be as much of a surprise to us as it is to you, though we’d put money on a few of last season’s favourites cropping up again. Tickets priced at £12.50, available from thearches.co.uk Have A (Beach) Ball Okay, so we said we weren’t going to talk about festivals here, but The Big Beach Ball isn’t your average weekend of music and mud. For one thing, it’s not in a field, with all events taking place in and around Aberdeen’s Beach Ballroom. It’s only on for one day – May 4th – and it incorporates everything from music to a vintage market and a Malibu Tiki bar and beach. Expect some of the UK’s best DJs on the line-up and start doing your best sun dance NOW. Tickets priced at £31.70 (early bird special), available from thebigbeachball.co.uk

THE HEADLINERS THE SOUNDTRACK We’re torn between Pharrell’s & THE LINE-UP Not so much the headliners as the acts that have been announced so far, first to be announced for this year’s Big Weekend were Paolo Nutini and Rita Ora, swiftly followed by The 1975 and none other than PHARRELL WILLIAMS. And, as Scott Mills tells us on p30 & 31, it’s only going to get bigger. But how? BEYONCÉ?! We can but dream.

George Square and Glasgow Green, Glasgow 23rd-25th May Tickets were available for just a £5 booking fee per pair. Sold out in 30 minutes. It was a no-brainer.

On Friday night Radio 1 DJs Annie Mac, Zane Lowe, Pete Tong and Danny Howard will be broadcasting live from George Square, throwing the party to end all parties, with special guests still to be announced. n case you hadn’t heard, Radio 1’s Big Weekend is coming to Glasgow Green on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th May, and we couldn’t be more excited. Bringing Rita Ora and Paolo Nutini – plus a whole host of other still to be announced acts – to the city, we caught up with Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills for all the gossip on Big Weekends past and present. When do you start preparing yourself for the Big Weekend and what does that involve? I already know what shows I’m doing on the Saturday and Sunday, but what I’m doing with different artists will be told to me – I would imagine – in the next two weeks. That’s when it starts to get exciting, when you’re assigned a list of things to do with some of the artists on the bill, who’ll be doing what with whom. Normally I’m quite involved, so I can’t wait to find out who I’m working with this year. Give us an example of something that could be on your to do list…

EXPLORING

LADY GAGA’S Special

Cordoned-Off Area

With

SCOTT MILLS

Well, the year we were in Carlisle I got an email through, and I was getting to do the only interview with Lady Gaga that was happening over the whole weekend. I had to go to a special, cordoned-off Lady Gaga area and I was the only person allowed to go in, which was quite exciting. Then about a day later I got asked to DJ on the main stage as Lady Gaga’s warm-up act! It was probably the biggest gig I’ve done and to the most excited crowd you can imagine. Can you share what a special, cordoned-off Lady Gaga area looks like? It’s ridiculous. We’ve had one for Madonna and Rihanna before, and at Hackney there was one for Jay-Z. Most artists get a portacabin to get ready in, but this is a full-on area with hospitality, two or three

Winnebagos with beds in… Only people who work directly with them are allowed in there and you have to have the correct pass. Even if you have an AAA pass, you can’t get in there without an additional pass and there are people guarding it like it’s royalty, it’s mental. You feel quite scared in there, like you could be taken down at any moment, but normally you’ll find the artist is really relaxed and just chilling out. The bigger the star, the bigger the area. How is it being in amongst the fans as opposed to sitting in your studio? It’s completely different, like my radio show every day is what I know, but you get on that stage and realise they’re all Radio 1 listeners. They’ve applied to be there, so more than any other gig this is core Radio 1 audience, in a place that we don’t come to that often. They’re well up for it and very receptive. Have you had a favourite Big Weekend so far? I think, just because of the ridiculousness of the whole Lady Gaga thing that I told you about, the Carlisle one sticks out in my head as being pretty epic. The Hackney weekend was incredible too, because there were 100,000 people there over the two days, and literally hundreds of acts. It was just so special to be a part of. How do you think the Big Weekend has got better over the years? Well now, even if you’re not there, it’s just amazing! It’s all over the TV, it’s on the website, you can go to any stage and watch everything. I was stuck in traffic on the way to Hackney and missed the start of that Big Weekend, so I started watching it on my phone, literally two miles away from the site.

www.scotcampus.com

Everyone is closer to it than ever before now. What are you most looking forward to about coming to Glasgow? Well I always say this when I’m doing my DJ sets, but the crowds in Scotland are just unlike anywhere else in the world, it’s crazy. Recently I did a mini tour of student unions, so two in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Stirling, and they’re always the best gigs I do. I feel like it’s because you’ve went a bit further and made more of an effort to go and see them than you do with the English crowds, and they just love that, it’s next level. Who would be your dream addition to this year’s Big Weekend line-up? Well, just because I’ve seen her more than anyone else and she always does a great show, Rihanna. I’ve seen her at three Big Weekends now and at Hackney when Jay-Z came out with her it was just amazing. She sticks in my mind, but that might also narrow down her chances of being there! You don’t need to worry about the acts by the way; it’s REALLY good. Like, REALLY good. What’s your number one tip for surviving any festival? Dress appropriately! I used to take a T-shirt per day to the Big Weekend and that was it. I remember being at one in Northern Ireland and it rained so much. Carlisle wasn’t much better. You can’t rely on British weather and you particularly can’t rely on Scottish weather, so what I’m saying is be prepared, because it can get pretty cold. That being said, one of the first Big Weekends was in Falkirk and the rest of the country had awful weather, while we were all sweating in Falkirk. It was so hot.

If all the backstage areas at the Big Weekend were abolished, which Radio 1 DJ would we find queuing at the bar? Me. Always. Who would be chowing down on a deep fried Mars Bar? Nick Grimshaw. When we did the Edinburgh Festival together we ate them on air once and he particularly enjoyed it. Who might we find swaying to Paolo? Definitely Fearne Cotton. She’s obsessed with him! Who would be brave enough to take on the Portaloos? Someone who does it a lot, like Huw Stephens. He goes to like a million gigs and has to put up with all sorts of toilet facilities. Who’s guaranteed to be snapping a selfie? Also Grimmy… Without a shadow of a doubt. Tickets for Radio 1’s Big Weekend are now completely sold out. Interview: Mikky Ekko

T

hink ‘Mikky Ekko’ and chances are the first thing that comes to mind is Rihanna’s Stay, the haunting single Mikky wrote and featured on, which hit the top 10 in countries around the globe and was performed by the pair at the 2013 Grammy Awards. Now preparing to release his debut album, we caught up with Mikky – real name John Stephen Sudduth – during his UK tour with One Republic, where he let us in on what it’s like to work with Ryan Tedder, RiRi and Pharrell. Are One Republic friends of yours? Yeah they are actually, when they were on tour in the States I met up with them in Portland and rode with them for a few days, and Ryan and I have actually written a handful of songs together since then.

32MUSIC

Is Ryan someone who inspires you as an artist or a writer? Well I feel like someone who’s written that many massive tunes, you just can’t ignore, and he’s definitely inspiring to be around. He’s so fast. All the greats are really fast and he’s no exception to that rule. I just hope I can continue to learn from him, I see him as a mentor and I think it’s really cool to be on the road with him right now.

him again in future. He’s another incredible producer and somebody who’s been in the game for a while, and who I also see as a mentor, because I learn from him. He taught me just to get it out and get it down, you can’t analyse something that doesn’t exist; you can sit and go over a song a thousand times, but until you continue to move on that’s where you can see how your work’s going and where you’re moving.

How fast are we talking here? How quickly can he write a song?

Tell us about your album – are there any reoccurring themes on there?

It depends, but if he’s in the right place, in the right time… There are a few things we’ve written in the matter of an hour or an hour and a half. I know he’s capable of writing a tune in 30 minutes if the track’s there. He’s up there with Pharrell and some of my favourites.

Y’know, my perspective initially meant that I was really afraid of being labelled pop, which I see as saccharine rather than sweet. I was focusing on being honest and I got to work with amazing high profile writers and producers, so for me it’s a bold first statement, but one that I need to make because I’ve had so many different influences over the years. It’s important to put that out there.

How did you find working with Pharrell on your new album? Oh I loved working with Pharrell. We’ve stayed in touch as well and I really look forward to working with

OPEN DAY - GLASGOW CAMPUS Saturday 10th May - 10am - 4pm

Go to glasgow.sae.edu to register for the Open Day

Interview: Mikky Ekko How did it feel to be thrust into the spotlight because of your work with Rihanna? It was pretty crazy, but you prepare and you prepare and you prepare, and you hope for a moment that comes. Sometimes you don’t know when, what or how that moment’s gonna happen, but for me it’s about making the most of those moments. It’s always a little surreal I suppose, but I’m a true believer in living your dream and if that’s what you know is in you, then you just keep running. I feel blessed that the opportunity came my way and I just want to continue to show people what I can do.

Is Mikky Ekko an alter ego for you or literally just a stage name? It’s definitely not just a stage name, but I wouldn’t say it’s an alter ego either… Simply, it means a lot of things to me, and I thought about it a lot. I wanted it to be something simple and easy to say, but that people could take as their own, and make of it what they will. Hopefully people can draw their own conclusions and enjoy it as much as I do!

How do you find writing for other people as opposed to writing for yourself? It’s funny, because I don’t ever write for other people; even with Stay that was written for me. It was a tough one for me to accept initially, because I felt like it was a really vulnerable place, and I didn’t know if I was ready to show people that. When I heard Ri wanted it, I thought, ‘My gosh, if it can affect someone like her, what can it do for other people?’ I believe in just writing songs that are honest and genuine, and if it’s not right for me I’ll know and I’ll see if somebody else wants to take it on. Is there anyone you’d like to collaborate with any future that you haven’t worked with yet? So many, but for me it’s about timing, because it’s so easy to get caught up in fantasies. I spend a lot of time in that world, but ultimately I try to stay in the dream stream, and when something’s right I’ll pull the trigger.

Interview: Eliza and the Bear

“Glastonbury would be a dream” W hen Scotcampus catch Eliza and the Bear’s lead singer James Kellegher on the phone, he’s in Glasgow and we’re in London. “Ah, we’ve swapped!” he says, explaining that the band’s manager is from Glasgow, and they’re recording in the city. While his band doesn’t include any bears or a girl named Eliza (very misleading, we know), their line-up is completed by Callie Noakes on keys, Martin Dukelow on guitar, bassist Chris Brand and drummer Paul Kevin Jackson. Coming to a field near you this summer, James shares his secret Scottish gig hotspot, as well as his fantasy festival line-up. You guys have been so busy this year so far; how was the UK tour? It was great, it was probably the longest run of shows we’ve ever done, and it got such a great response. We played a lot of smaller towns, off the beaten track places

36MUSIC

and it was great to know we could still get a reaction there, as well as Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester and cities like that.

Were there any places where the crowd really surprised you? We played a show in Ayr at The Basement Coffee House and it was mental! It was probably my favourite show of the entire tour. It’s such a tiny little place, but it was completely full, everyone was having such a great time and there was just a really good vibe in there. You’ve also been gigging in Germany – what was that like? Well the first time we went there we had absolutely no expectations and when we showed up people were coming to see us already singing our songs. It was really weird for us, but they treat us really well and it’s a bit of a different way of life, a nice change of pace from the UK.

Did you eat any wurst (German sausage) while you were there? I had loads! At first I was really backwards in coming forwards with it, but then I ate one, and then I had to have one every day. Every day for lunch. I’m definitely a convert. You’re heading out on tour again with AWOLNATION; what’s it like changing the pace from headlining shows back to being the support act? You definitely have to tailor your set for those shows, because essentially you’re going out there with half an hour to prove yourself, whereas at your own show people are already into you. You’ve got to play the big songs. It’s a bit like a first date really, isn’t it? Yeah, weirdly, but with 2,500 people! ‘Hi everyone!’

@Scotcampus

You get covered in water in the video for Brother’s Boat – how cold was that to film?! Unbelievably cold. If you pause the video at the moment the water hits my head you can probably see the amount of pain that I was in. I was ill for days, because we had to shoot it a couple of times, so we’d go from freezing cold water to being attacked with hairdryers and heaters, then back to cold water. It was definitely worth it though. You’ve got to suffer for your art sometimes. Will you be translating the waterbased antics into your live shows? Absolutely not! [laughs] Never, ever again.

interested in having our own distinct visuals, but it’s just trying to get to grips with it, and get the ball rolling.

magical place they’ve ever been in their entire lives. Playing it would be great, but even going for the weekend would just be amazing.

What three essentials will you be taking to all the festivals you’re playing this summer?

What three acts would be on your dream festival line-up?

Wet wipes are 100% my number one. A crate of beer to keep you sane and a spare pair of shoes. It’s unbelievable how many pairs of shoes I went through at all the festivals last year. I wore a white pair of Vans to a festival once, stepped out of the van and straight into a puddle of mud – they were instantly ruined. I was like, ‘Yep, it’s festival time!’

How involved are you in the visuals for videos and tours?

If you could play any festival in the world, where would it be and why?

We like to get really hands on, but we’re not great at coming up with the initial concepts and ideas. After someone has given us a suggestion we’ll get our hands dirty and put our own stamp on it. We’re really

It’s gotta be Glastonbury for me I think. It would be a dream. It holds so much history and so many great bands have played it. I’ve never been, but a few of my friends have and they say it’s the most

At the moment it would have to be Bombay Bicycle Club headlining, Local Natives in there somewhere and… who’s the last one? I really like this band from New York called Skaters at the minute, so they’d have to feature on there somewhere. They’re too cool for school. Eliza and the Bear’s new single Brother’s Boat is out now. The band are playing Live At Leeds festival this summer and you can win tickets over on p20!

hile we’re quite sure summer 2014 will provide a whole host of memorable festival moments, can they possibly beat our top five festival moments of all time? We’re not convinced…

JAY-Z AND BEYONCÉ THE LIBERTINES GET DO YOUNG FOREVER BACK TOGETHER AT AT COACHELLA READING Oh we do love a surprise special guest and they don’t come much bigger than Beyoncé. Welcoming his wifey on stage at Coachella in 2010, Jigga Man let Queen Bey take on Mr Hudson’s vocals for their hit track Young Forever and of course she killed it. Bow down, bitches; nobody rocks a festival quite like Beyoncé.

THE ROLLING STONES ROCK GLASTONBURY 2013 was a good year for Glasto. After 43 years of the festival, organisers finally secured Mick, Ronnie, Charlie and Keef, who certainly didn’t disappoint. There were fireworks, there was a mechanical phoenix and there was some ruddy great music. Festival organiser Micheal Eavis declared it, “the high spot of 43 years" and we have to agree. It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll, but we like it.

BRANDON FLOWERS JOINS NEW ORDER AT T IN THE PARK In a festival moment you just couldn’t write, The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers asked New Order if he could join the band to perform their track Crystal at T in the Park 2005 and they said YES. The reason? The Killers got their name thanks to the fictional band in Crystal’s video. The performance? Legendary.

The GREATEST FESTIVAL MOMENTS of all time

The band that just couldn’t stay together managed to pull off a belting performance at Reading Festival in 2010, despite Pete Doherty’s various addictions, with this show cited as one of their best ever performances. The best bit? When the band HUGGED at the end. It made us think everything was going to be okay… for a little while.

KANYE WEST RANTS HIS WAY THROUGH BIG CHILL Oh Kanye… you’re a bit of a twat, but we can’t help but enjoy it when you get on your soapbox, and Big Chill 2011 was a great example of this. We’re not sure what the f**k he was on about, all we know is he went on for more than 10 minutes, so he clearly had one big bee in his bonnet. Will he repeat his r-antics at Wireless this year? One can only hope.

When? April 16th Where? The Garage, Glasgow Tickets £12 from Ticketmaster.co.uk

When? May 19th, 20th & 21st Where? Usher Hall, Edinburgh & Clyde Auditorium, Glasgow Tickets from £23.50, available at Ticketmaster.co.uk

If you didn’t catch Paul alongside The Head and the Heart at Oran Mor last month, now’s your chance to make amends, as he returns to Glasgow for a headline show at King Tut’s. Releasing his debut album Beautiful Desolation on April 7th, Paul’s tracks are quietly uplifting, and we’re sure his gig will be the same.

“If I was Jay-Z, you’d be my Beyoncé, we could rock the nation like they do,” is the opening line from The Summer Set’s Boomerang, aka the happiest song in the world. If that doesn’t automatically sell you then note that frontman Brian is a babe and their music will take you back to your early teenage years – in a good way.

LILY ALLEN

KATY PERRY

When? May 23rd Where? Aberdeen Music Hall Tickets £30 from Gigsinscotland.com Lily is back with a bang (and a “baggy pussy” if her Hard Out Here video is anything to go by). Bringing her unique vocals and no doubt some amazing outfits to Aberdeen Music Hall this May, this is one gig you won’t want to miss, for the fear Lily could ‘retire’ again at any moment if nothing else.

(with special guests Icona Pop) When? May 17th & 18th Where? The SSE Hydro, Glasgow Tickets from £39.50, available at Ticketsoup.com This one doesn’t take much explaining. If you want to hear Katy ROAR and you don’t care, because YOU LOVE IT, then you need a ticket for this gig ASAP. Last time Scotcampus saw Katy she floated around on a candyfloss cloud. Last time we saw Icona Pop they wore outfits made mostly of mirrors. They also all sound amazing. It’s a no brainer.

The X Factor winners done good play three Scottish gigs in May and you can guarantee they’ll cheer you up after a long day at uni/work/life. From this year’s Sport Relief single Word Up! to old favourite Wings, you’ll be amazed at how many words you know, and how Jesy, Jade, Leigh-Anne and Perrie are filling that Girls Aloud void far better than you ever thought they would.

PAOLO NUTINI When? May 27th Where? Usher Hall, Edinburgh Tickets from £29.50, available at Ticketmaster.co.uk Don’t be hasty; get your tickets to Paolo Nutini NOW before they sell out like his Glasgow gigs. Will Paolo have a few whiskies before the show like he does on Hogmanay with Jackie Bird? Probably, but it’s all part of his charm, so embrace it. If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.

Interview: A Great Big World

40MUSIC

@Scotcampus

I

t’s not often that a relatively low-key band are approached by an international superstar who wants to feature on one of their tracks, but that’s exactly what happened to New Yorkers Ian Axel and Chad Vaccarino, aka A Great Big World. The artist was, of course, Christina Aguilera. The song was Say Something, the heartbreaking story of giving up on a relationship when you don’t really want to. The rest is chart history. “Christina’s team contacted our manager to ask if we would consider letting her collaborate with us on the song,” says Chad. “She had been so moved by it when she heard it on [US version of Strictly] So You Think You Can Dance? and she was really adamant that she didn’t want to take over, she just wanted her voice to feature on the track.” “We were both heartbroken when we wrote the song, but that was four years ago,” explains Ian. “Last year we were recording our album when we got an email from the team at So You Think You Can Dance? asking if they could use Say Something in their season finale. From there it started getting played on the radio and then ended up charting. And obviously Christina heard it.” While the boys admit they were “starstruck” when they first met Aguilera, now both say it “feels normal now, because we know her more”. But, before making friends with one of the biggest voices in the business, how did A Great Big World come to light? “We met at NYU,” explains Ian. “ I was looking for someone to collaborate with and immediately we just clicked. We were freaking out because it was just so profound.” Chad agrees, saying, “Writing together just comes so easily.”

www.scotcampus.com

Before Christina found the duo, Glee creator Ryan Murphy got in touch and asked if the cast could perform their track This Is The New Year in season four of the hit TV show. “That was a very random and crazy dream that came true,” says Chad. “Ryan Murphy heard about the song and the next thing the New Directions were making a video for it.” Having released their debut album, Is There Anybody Out There? In February this year, Chad and Ian still cite This Is The New Year as the first track any budding A Great Big World fan should listen to. “It sums up everything we’re about,” says Ian. “It’s all about there being no time but now and it’s very celebratory.” The song has featured everywhere from the movie New Year’s Eve to cult teen TV show One Tree Hill, so Chad and Ian certainly have plenty to celebrate. Another song particularly close to Chad’s heart is Everyone Is Gay. “Our friends started the website Everyoneisgay.com and the song came from that, but mostly I wanted to speak to kids who were

confused or have been bullied. It’s upbeat, it’s anthemic and basically it’s saying it’s okay to be gay.” With their next single as of yet unannounced, with the boys stating, “We haven’t thought about it too much actually,” what’s next for Chad and Ian? “Well we would like to collaborate with more people,” says Chad. “Ryan Tedder is pretty much at the top of the list and, obviously, Beyoncé and Jay-Z would be a dream.” “Right now we’re actually working on a Broadway musical,” adds Ian. “We can’t say too much about it at the moment, but they found us, and it’s been so much fun so far. We’re also just travelling a lot internationally and would of course love to tour in the UK.” It’s a great big world out there and by the sounds of things Chad and Ian are just getting started. Interview: Bipolar Sunshine

B

ipolar Sunshine is Adio Marchant, the Manchesterbased vocalist who formerly fronted Kid British, the six-piece, high-energy mixed genre band who one could have just as easily compared with Madness as with OutKast. Now keeping things a little more on the indie side of life, we chatted to Adio after he kicked off his own festival season at SXSW in Austin, Texas, to find out what he’s getting up to this year and just why he likes those floral shirts so much… As it turns out he has a very good reason. How was SXSW? It was amazing to be honest; I met some cool people, saw some good shows, ate some good food. I managed to catch Erykah Badu, who I really like, she was wicked. I didn’t see Lady Gaga being thrown up on, but I heard about it – it sounded pretty crazy.

42MUSIC

How have you been preparing for your UK tour? SXSW was my preparation really, it’s just about getting used to performing live again, getting the performance sharp and pushing it through. It’s good to watch other acts too, because you can always learn from other acts, and that’s what I really enjoy doing. I’ve been on tour with Rudimental before, but you have more control and you know people are there to see you when it’s your headline shows, though you still have to work just as hard to keep the fans. I just see it as fun, I don’t take it too seriously and I hope people walk out feeling good. What is your favourite thing about touring? I think it’s just being in the van with the rest of the guys. Everyone’s spirits are pretty high, everyone’s enjoying themselves and being

around good people is just the best feeling. I have six people with me on tour, not too many, but enough for a party. Do you have any favourite places you’ve been fortunate enough to visit so far? SXSW was something I’ve wanted to do for a while, so I’m really glad I did that, and playing Amsterdam was up there too. Same level. I was supporting London Grammar over there and their crowd is great, they just listen and take in everything, so it was nice to play in front of an audience who were fully captivated on what I was doing. What essentials do you always take on tour with you? Comme des Garçons aftershave, because I have to smell fresh all the time, I would never want to stink!

@Scotcampus

Do you miss having the other guys in Kid British to bounce off of on stage? Not really, because I still bounce off of the people I have on stage now, it’s more the completely different sound and energy-based performance I miss. I really enjoyed that, it was good times with some good friends, but it’s good to see they’re doing really great stuff now too. We see each other at festivals and it’s just nice to see everyone doing so well. Your new video for Where Did The Love Go is so strong visually; how involved are you in that side of things? I’m involved in everything, from the videos to the artwork, you’ve got to be involved as much as possible. It’s your vision and if you put it in the hands of someone else they don’t always get it.

www.scotcampus.com

Where was your starting point for the video?

What else will we be seeing from you this year?

Well I wanted something that was very captivating and I worked really closely with a guy called Geiger who directed the video. We knew the colour scheme we wanted to go for and we wanted to make it emotional for people when they put the song together with the video.

I’m gonna start to put out some really interesting visuals and there are songs that may not make the album, but I’m gonna make visuals for them, and a few other little interesting pieces. Maybe some collaborations with other artists that I people should know about, or artists that are already known and I’d love to work with. Mainly I’m just trying to put out as much good music as possible.

You’re a big fan of a patterned shirt; how did your signature style develop? Well it used to be a checkered shirt and then I was like, d’ya know what, it’s a new day, let’s take a new angle. There’s just something really nice about florals and I can get them at most vintage shops. They’re just so loose on stage, it’s nice, it makes you feel like you’re in a hot country all the time when you’re really not. That’s why I do it, to fool myself! Mind over matter.

ASHISH X TOPSHOP Topshop is really knocking it out of the park with its collaborative offerings this season, from Topshop x adidas Originals which launched back in March, to the latest Ashish x Topshop collection. This is the tenth year of Ashish’s partnership with Topshop and long-time fans will know to expect sequins GALORE when the line drops in May. Also included in the highly anticipated collection are the Buffalo Boots that debuted on Ashish’s mainline AW14 catwalk at London Fashion Week. Already snapped up by Lily Allen – who loves hers so much she sleeps with them – the shoes have LED lights in their supersized soles. So much cooler than any Buffalos Baby Spice ever wore. Ashish x Topshop arrives instore and online in May

Oh and we love Kate Moss x Topshop too! At the time of Scotcampus going to print, Kate Moss’ 40-piece collection for Topshop – comprised of womenswear, footwear and accessories – was still a closely guarded secret, but with previous collections based on Mossy’s own wardrobe we have a reasonable idea of what to expect. Festival staples ahoy. "I have really missed being involved in the design process, and working with the team at Topshop," says Kate, following a three-year gap since her last Toppers collection. "I'm very excited to create a new collection that bears my name. Now more than ever, with London being at the forefront of fashion, as it feels like I'm back home working with Topshop.” Welcome home, Mossy. We’ve missed you. Kate Moss x Topshop launches in April

The BOB is back! F

rom the blunt-cut bobs seen on Marc Jacobs NYFW catwalk back in February, to model muse Sam Rollinson’s androgynous style at Narciso Rodriguez, it looks like the days of long, flowing locks are over. Got your scissors ready? Spring/ Summer 2014 is all about the bob!

Arc and Amelia Earhart could all be distinguished by their long, shiny bob haircuts.

The bob epidemic has spread further than just the fashion world, too. Celebrities from Beyoncé – who chopped off her signature curls in late 2013 – to Rita Ora and Taylor Swift have been embracing classy bobs. Even supermodel Naomi Campbell was seen sporting a sleek cut during fashion week. Everyone is Dangerously In Love with this haircut, but this wasn’t always the case throughout history…

The hair revolution truly started during World War I when many women abandoned their roles as housewives for more active roles in the army and workplace. This was a freedom never before seen. The surrender of the traditional long locks represented the end of an era where women were seen as fragile and weak, and the beginning of a time when they gained independence. But not only was it a visual statement of this “new woman”, it was also a reflection of a time period where the lack of sanitary conditions were so extreme that it was more hygienic for both men and women to have short hair.

Women have worn their hair long for many centuries, as it used to symbolise youth, beauty and femininity. However, over the last few decades, this belief has very much changed. Cleopatra, Joan of

During the 1920s, bobbed hair went from being a statement about equality of sexes to a fashion trend. It illustrated a sassy, modern woman. Renowned American author F. Scott Fitzgerald clearly

by Aline Siekierski displayed the reality of the bob during that time with his short story Bernice Bobs Her Hair. The story was written in 1921 and it was based on the letters Fitzgerald exchanged with his sister, advising her on how to be more attractive to men, by having a bob haircut. Bet you didn’t know that! Over the years, the bob has consistently remained in style. From Audrey Hepburn’s classy bob in the ’50s to Twiggy’s geometric shape in the ’60s, and how could we forget Joan Jett’s punkier, longer bob in the ’80s? Timeless, chic and – let’s not forget – a perfect hairstyle for the warmer months, the bob is an easy and quick option to looking fashion forward for Spring/Summer. Need proof? Fashion queen Ms. Anna Wintour; a true believer that the bob haircut is the way to go, year in, year out.

Interview: LA LA LAND’s Sarah Graham and Designer Kirsty Baynham

LA LA LAND-ING

W

e’re always on the hunt for a new shopping ground here at Scotcampus, but LA LA LAND – the online and IRL Glasgow-based store owned by Sarah Graham – has long been one of our favourites. From humble beginnings in Glasgow’s De Courcy’s Arcade, Sarah’s little shop has grown into quite the hub of online activity, offering everything from Ryan Gosling print T-shirts to sassy slogan stationery and gifts. In fact, it’s grown so much that Sarah has just launched LA LA LAND’s first own-label collection, a collaboration with Scottish artist Kirsty Baynham (AKA Prism of Starlings). Here Sarah and Kirsty break down the collection for is and reveal what’s next for LA LA LAND. Was an own-label collection always on the cards for LA LA LAND or did something specific prompt it? Sarah: I studied fashion design and garment construction at uni, but at the time it wasn’t something that I ever saw myself doing for a career, and decided to concentrate more on the theoretical side of fashion business. I have been more than happy curating a fantastic selection of other peoples’ work and acting as a conduit between designer and customer at LA LA LAND, but I longed to create something that was exclusive to LA LA LAND and to be involved in whatever way I could in the process.

56STYLE

Where does your own love of fashion stem from? S: I always want what I can’t have. I have a wardrobe full of really nice clothes, but I forever covet other peoples’ wardobes. I think this originates from always wanting to wear my older sister’s clothes when I was growing up and never being allowed to. Kirsty: I can probably trace it back to picking up a Viktor & Rolf fashion magazine as a teenager and realising for the first time that clothing can be an art form in itself. Fashion illustration was one of my first loves, and having a collection made featuring my own designs seems like the next step up and definitely an exciting venture. How would you describe your own personal style in 3 words? S: Fun, simple and sometimes offensive. K: Pattern, geometric, colourful. Sarah, why did you decide to work with Kirsty on the first collection? S: I’ve known Kirsty for a while as I stocked her artwork in LA LA LAND. Her word is intricate, detailed and absolutely beautiful. It looks stunning framed on a wall, but I wanted to see it out on the street! It’s been a fun process to do it together and to see the collection evolve from images on a computer screen, to seeing models wearing the designs at a sold-out fashion show, to customers buying the finished pieces.

@Scotcampus

Who would you like to collaborate with in future? S: I have a wish list of artists that I would love to work with for future collections including Cindy Lesman, who creates stunning watercolours of pop culture icons, and Niki Pilkington’s mixed media fashion illustrations are amazing. Little Book Transfers – Scotland’s very own up-and-coming mural artists – also do work that looks like it would transfer easily from wall to body. What other plans do you have in mind for LA LA LAND's expansion?

Talk us through the design process of that debut collection... K: Sarah and I first discussed the aesthetic we wanted to achieve for the collaboration. We chose certain animals and styles to work with, then I created the final designs, starting with the main features of each illustration – the fox, the wolf head, the geometric tree, and the mirrored cats – and working outward. I added features like arrows, chevron motifs, glasshouse architecture detail and geometric tree roots. The aim was to mimic the shape, texture and elegance of the animals in their surrounding garden of embellishment. Finally, we mutually decided on the colour schemes. We're obsessed with the lace crowns, but what is your standout piece? S: I love the lace crowns! Initially, I had made them only to accessorise the clothing for the Lookbook, but after the Lookbook launched online I was inundated with emails and tweets asking when they were going on sale. I made a more and they continue to be very popular! My standout piece from the Basics

www.scotcampus.com

range is the Fox Cameo Tee. I love foxes and I love cameos so it’s all good. What should we expect from collection number two? S: Not many people know, but I used to run a vintage store and ‘Luxe’ has definitely been inspired by some of my favourite vintage pieces that I could never bare to part with. I’m excited to reveal a fabric that was especially designed for the collection and will remain exclusive to us. It’s a lot of fun.

S: As LA LA LAND is an online shop, our website is crucial. We have recently added a Wish List feature and we have big plans for our blog. We recently took part in BOLD SOULS and I am still buzzing! We definitely want to be involved in more events and may even hold a few of our own too.

GET 15% OFF AT LA LA LAND and win your own piece of the BASICS collection!

To celebrate the launch of their first own-label collection, LA LA LAND are kindly offering 15% off all purchases from their online store, from April 1st to May 31st. Hurrah! GLASGOW SCHOOL OF ART FASHION SHOW 2014:

Show Report

S

cotland’s most promising young designers showcased their work at the acclaimed Glasgow School of Art Fashion Show on Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th March, where models strutted down the catwalk displaying designs from second and third year Fashion and Textiles students, to a style savvy audience. The impressive new Glasgow Art School building hosted two shows per evening, with the young designers assigned three models each, who all flaunted fresh and exciting designs. Sticking to the primary brief of ‘qualities and characteristics of lace’, this was interpreted by designers in various ways, as they also had to incorporate the silhouette theme of ‘world dress traditions’.

by Joanne Clark West Africa, particularly Maasai people of the East and Masquerade rituals of the West. Knits were based around Peru and Ecuador, while Weave was based on Palestine, specifically the traditional thobe. Embroidery, meanwhile, honed in on Romania. Ruth Crothers studies Textile Design and worked with print to produce her designs. “My starting point was a series of photographs, which captured lace like qualities,” she explains. “They were mainly of windows around the city, frosted glass, interesting light patterns and reflections. I was really inspired by the mottled, painterly textures within the photos and wanted to translate these onto my fabrics.” Like many students Ruth enjoyed the work involved in producing her extremely impressive pieces. “My favourite part of the design process is definitely sampling. I love screen-printing. There is a lot of preparation involved, but the actual printing is over in an instant. I’m always excited to see what my prints look like and I get so many more ideas at this stage.” Hannah Dykes, who studies Fashion and Textiles, used knit when working on her final products. She says, “I focused a lot on texture and 3D textiles for this collection, as well as playing around with scale. My interpretation of lace is positive and negative spaces, and I based my research on gates and railings, in and around the West End of Glasgow.”

GLASGOW SCHOOL OF ART FASHION SHOW 2014:

Show Report

Students were asked to consider ‘top to toe’ and not just ‘neck to knee’, meaning the majority of models wore accessories designed especially to fit with their attire. The styling of the models tied each outfit together and gave the audience a better idea of what outfits could look like should they be worn day-to-day. One member of the audience, Alice Lister, was impressed by how differently all the students interpreted their brief. “I loved the diversity of the students’ work,” she says. “The pompoms on Hannah Dykes’ work were really cool and they made her pieces stand out from the rest. Watching the show was great fun; all the clothes had new and exciting concepts. The African themed print collections would look great worn in the summer, because they were so bright and eye-catching.”

Dr. Martens on Sauchiehall Street kindly sponsored the event and donated 10 pairs of shoes to lucky students who wished to include them in their final outfits, while money made from ticket sales will go towards allowing participating students to present their designs at London’s New Designer Exhibition in summer 2015. An inspiring and awe-inducing evening indeed.

GRADUATION61

A Guide to GRADUATION TIME

G

raduation, like all other major events, can be stressful. From who in your family gets the two allocated tickets, to where you’re going to celebrate after the ceremony, depending on your temperament you might find it all a bit… well, much. However, with our handy checklist, it really needn’t be this way. Save the stress for your wedding, mortgage, kids, travels; you’ve got your whole life ahead of you.

1. Have you been invited to graduate? It seems like a silly question, but if you know you’ve passed everything and yet you haven’t received your graduation letter and all your classmates have, chase it up! It is, most likely, an oversight on your university’s part. They’ve got a lot of students to see too remember. 2. Have you requested your tickets? Most university’s let a student invite a maximum of two people to see them graduate, but you’ll have to fill in a form to let them know. Equally, if you only need one ticket or don’t need any, make sure you haven’t requested just for the sake of it. Students with bigger parties coming to watch them will often have to enter a ballot to get more tickets and if there are empty seats at the ceremony when Granny couldn’t get a ticket, you can bet they’ll have a bee in their bonnet. Or cap.

62GRADUATION

3. Have you hired your robes?

6. Can you walk in your shoes?

Now usually arranged online by most places, your university will have supplied you with all the details you need to buy or hire the appropriate colour and length of robes. Never underestimate the length part.

Too high heels, too smooth soles… make sure you can walk in your shoes before you attempt to climb those stairs or you’ll forever be remembered as the chump who fell on stage at Graduation.

4. Are you using the official photographer? Chances are, if you are opting for the university photographer, it will need to be booked in advance too. However, snapshots can be just as fun, so make sure your cheering squad have their cameras at the ready. 5. Have you left plenty of time to get to the ceremony? Account for traffic, public transport delays and the weather. Nobody wants to be running on stage yelling, “I’m here! I’m here!”

7. What are you doing afterwards? If you want to enjoy a meal with family or friends, make sure you book your chosen restaurant in advance, as you won’t be the only one with that idea. There’s nothing worse than trailing round three restaurants only to be told they’re all fully booked. 8. And most importantly… Remember to smile the whole day – after all, you never have to go to university again!

Another Glasgow native that’s branched out to the East Side, Ketchup’s gourmet burger menu is a sight to behold. From the Napoli sauce-topped Italian Job, to the Scottish Highland Venison delight that is Who Killed Bambi? there’s something for even the ultimate burger snob. Make sure to save room for a ChoccyWoccyDooDah though; it’s the best ice cream sundae you’ll ever have.

LILY & STONE 11 Union Street, DD1 4BN www.lilyandstone.wickedweb.biz This lovely little café dishes up all manners of breakfast and brunch bites, from strawberries and cream on French toasted brioche, to hickory smoked bacon and scrambled egg. Simply named, simply styled, simply delicious; The Tapas Bar is a little Spanish gem. From skewers to asparagus wrapped in Serrano ham, chorizo to garlic chicken, there’s a massive variety of petite dishes on offer, even for vegetarians. Make sure you book in advance – word is getting out about The Tapas Bar and everyone wants a piece of it.

TICKETY BOO’S 51 Commercial Street, DD1 2AA www.facebook.com/Tickety.Boos This traditional pub hosts quizzes and poker nights, and shows live football matches, but it’s their food that truly sets them apart from other establishments. With a far more extensive selection than your average pub, we’re big fans of the chili con carne and the super creamy macaroni cheese… Mmm…

BAR SOBA 11 Mitchell Lane, G1 3NU www.barsoba.co.uk More of a restaurant than a bar, despite a delicious cocktail menu – the Um Bongo is our personal favourite – it’s Soba’s Pan-Asian street food that we really go wild for. The chicken katsu firecracker is to die for, but you just can’t beat a good Thai green chicken curry, can you?

Have A (Creme) EGGCELLENT EASTER

W

ith Easter just around the corner, I’ve been making the most of the 2-for-£1 Creme Egg offers that seem to be going on in every supermarket right now, by baking my bodyweight in Creme Egg Brownies. There are a few different ways you can make these ridiculously delicious (and calorific…) treats, but I prefer to make them keeping the eggs half intact (see picture), as opposed to coating the creme on like one might do with the caramel on Millionaire Shortbread. They may look a little messier, but they taste damn good!

CREME EGG BROWNIES Recipe to make 12 brownies Ingredients 185g unsalted butter

2. Melt your butter and dark chocolate together in the microwave 3. Break the three large eggs into a large bowl and mix in all of your sugar using an electric whisk (or very strong arms) until the mixture looks thick and creamy.

85g plain flour

4. Pour the cooled chocolate mixture over the egg and sugar, then fold the mixtures together

40g cocoa powder

5. Sift in your flour and cocoa

185g dark chocolate

275g golden caster sugar 3 large eggs 6 Creme Eggs, cut in half Method 1. Preheat your oven to 160 degrees Celsius and grease a 20cm square baking tin

6. Pour the complete mixture into your baking tin and bake for 15 minutes. 7. Take the tin out of the over and press in your Creme Egg halves, spacing them evenly, and replace tin in the oven for a further 5-10 minutes. 8. After the brownies have cooled, cut them into 12 squares and serve.

CREME EGG CUPCAKES

Recipe to make 24 cupcakes Another fun Easter recipe is for these Creme Egg cupcakes, which I found on Pinterest, and had to try immediately. It’s a little more complicated than the brownies, but well worth the effort if you can be bothered! Ingredients: For the cakes: 50g cocoa powder, sifted 100g dark muscovado sugar 250ml boiling water 125g soft unsalted butter 150g caster sugar 225g plain flour ½ tsp baking powder ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 2 tsp vanilla extract 2 eggs For the cream cheese frosting: 500g icing sugar
 125g cream cheese

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. 2. Sift the cocoa into a large bowl and mix in the dark muscovado sugar. Pour in the boiling water and mix. Set to one side to cool slightly.

125g soft unsalted butter

3. Cream the butter and caster sugar together in a separate bowl until pale and fluffy.

For the Creme Egg fondant filling: 170g golden syrup

4. Sift the flour, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda together in another bowl.

60g butter, room temperature
 375g icing sugar
 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
 1/4 teaspoon salt
Yellow food colouring To Decorate: 3 x bags of Mini Cadbury’s Creme Eggs

70LIFE

5. Dribble the vanilla extract into the creamed butter and then crack in one egg, quickly followed by a spoonful of the flour mixture, then the second egg. Keep mixing after each addition. Incorporate the rest of the flour mixture little by little, then finally mix and fold in the cocoa mixture.

7. To make the fondant filling mix the butter, syrup and vanilla in a bowl. Gradually add the icing sugar, then the food colouring and carry on beating until smooth. Cover and set to one side. 8. Make the cream cheese icing by mixing the butter, cream cheese and vanilla extract and then gradually add the icing sugar until the mixture is smooth and thick. 9. Place some of the fondant down one side of a piping bag and add the cream cheese down the other side, ideally with a 1/3 – 2/3 ratio of fondant to cream cheese icing. 10. Pipe out the frosting on to a plate until the two-tone effect begins to show, then ice your cupcakes. Use mini Creme Eggs to decorate and voila! You’re done.

6. Pour evenly into your cupcake cases and bake for 20-25 minutes. Leave to cool.

UNMISSABLE BLOCKBUSTERS

S

pending your summer in a dark room full of strangers may seem like a dumb thing to do, but hey, we’re from Scotland; there’s no guarantee the sun’s going to shine at all in the next six months! With a whole bunch of amazing sequels, prequels, remakes and brand new material flooding cinemas between now and September, we’ve picked the five movies you won’t want to miss this year, with or without an EE Wednesday code.

of Summer 2014

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Release date: April 18th If you haven’t seen Andrew Garfield’s first turn as The Amazing Spiderman, grab the Blu-Ray and get caught up now. He and real life girlfriend Emma Stone both return, while Jamie Foxx is a new addition to the cast, taking on the role of Electro, and Paul Giamatti appears as The Rhino. These super villains are sent by Oscorp to send our hero Peter Parker into his toughest battle yet. Godzilla Release date: May 16th Our memories of the 1998 version of Godzilla are a little hazy, considering we were only eight when it came out, so we’re rather looking forward to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 remake. It also stars two of our favourite young Hollywood talents, Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron TaylorJohnson, so even if the monster disappoints there’s eye candy for everyone. Though we highly doubt Godzilla will disappoint, or we wouldn’t be recommending it, would we? Blended Release date: May 23rd Any movie that brings Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore together again is definitely shooting to the top of our must-watch list. Remember how good they were together in 50 First Dates? Well, Blended sees them dating each other again, though they don’t get

72LIFE

on quite as well as one would hope… Then they end up stuck at a family holiday resort together with their respective children. Yikes. Watch out for former Disney kid Bella Thorne as Adam’s daughter, Hilary – she’s at that awkward age where stuffing your bra with insoles seems like a good idea. Maleficent Release date: July 2nd Ever wondered why Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty is so evil? Us neither, but on hearing Disney had cast Angelina Jolie in the role of the evil Queen and brought in Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora to help tell the tale, we were all ears. It’s already spawned a MAC Cosmetics collaboration and much has been made of Angie’s daughter Vivienne appearing as the toddler Princess Aurora, but don’t let that put you off – the movie itself looks set to be far greater than Oz The Great And Powerful, which was a big Disney disappointment. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Release date: August 8th The release date on this nostalgic trip down Turtles Lane has been pushed back several times already and details are still super vague – unless that draft screenplay that surfaced online was anything to go by… Megan Fox takes the lead as turtle pal April O’Neil and Whoopi Goldberg is also on the cast list. Tent-side READING

T

hink festivals and books don’t mix? Think again – there’s all that time spent travelling there and, if you’re lucky, you’ll be crawling out your sweaty tent to a few hours of glorious sunshine before any acts even think about hitting the stage. Here are four you might want to consider.

Divergent by Veronica Roth Whether you have or haven’t seen the Shailene Woodley blockbuster at the cinema yet, grab the first book in the Divergent series, and get lost in the world of Tris. There are three books in the series and, essentially, it’s this year’s answer to The Hunger Games. Young Adult literature at its finest. £5.99 from Amazon, out now

You’re The One That I Want by Giovanna Fletcher Recognise the name of this fine slice of chick lit’s author? That’s because it’s written by Tom from McFly’s wife, Giovanna, who recently gave birth to their baby boy, Buzz. Telling the story of Maddy, a woman torn between the man she’s about to marry and his best friend, it’s an addictive an easy read. £5.59 from Amazon, released on May 22nd

Metal Cats by Alexandra Crockett Cats are like, really popular on the internet. Think metalheads don’t enjoy that crap? Well, as this book shows, they’re as obsessed with the four-legged felines as the rest of us. Show it to everyone at the tents around yours and you’ll make friends for life. Unless they’re dog people. Pah. £9.99 from Amazon, released on May 8th

Face The Music: A Life Exposed by Paul Stanley Ever wondered what was going on beneath the make-up mask of Kiss star Paul Stanley? You’re about to find out, thanks to this upcoming autobiography, where he reveals personal triumphs – such as overcoming a condition called microtia, which left him with only one ear. “People say I was brave to write such a revealing book, but I wrote it because I needed to personally reflect on my own life,” says Paul. We say, get us on the pre-order list now! £8.83 from Amazon, released on April 8th

Why Are We All Taking Pictures Of Ourselves?

S

elfie (noun, plural selfies): A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website. Example sentence: “Occasional selfies are acceptable, but posting a new picture of yourself every day isn’t necessary.” This is the online definition for Oxford Dictionaries’ word of 2013 and perhaps if more people listened to the example sentence we wouldn’t be feeling something of a backlash towards the selfie. Most of us have taken a selfie at some point. With Instagram making it easier than ever to take (or at least filter) a good photograph, not to mention the front-facing camera option on most mobile phones, it’s hard to resist the temptation to

76LIFE

capture a particularly good face day. With models like Cara Delevingne and Karlie Kloss sharing theirs online, not to mention regular face-posts from the Kardashians and even cool guys like Calvin Harris getting in on the action, it’s become acceptable because… well… everyone is doing it. However, one person who is not a fan of the craze is Chanel creative director, Monsieur Karl Lagerfeld. “I hate the distortion of them,” he told fashion website ModMods on a recent trip to London. “You know, I call selfies electronic masturbation. It’s a kind of narcissism. I know people do it all the time during the day and they send it out and they look horrible. And normally people don’t hold it right and they look terrible. No head up here or huge head down there and no chin at all.

I don't like the angle of it.” Karl’s got a point. How many times have you hit your camera button to take a quick snap of something, only to scare yourself silly when you realise you left the camera on front-face, and the unflattering angle gives you at least three extra chins? It’s tough to pick a good angle for a selfie, but that doesn’t mean you have to practice EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. And, if you are that narcissistic, please resist the urge to post EVERY. SINGLE. PICTURE. Now, we’re not saying that we’re completely anti-selfie. When taken spontaneously with friends on a night out they can be fun, cute and might even score you 30 likes on Instagram. If you’re comedienne Ellen DeGeneres, your night out is hosting the Oscars and your friends

@Scotcampus

include Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, you could even find yourself crashing Twitter. Yep, with 3,399,764 retweets and 1,969,871 favourites at the time of writing – not to mention countless parodies – Ellen’s now-infamous Oscars selfie is the most retweeted picture of all time. It’s also our favourite non-professionally taken celebrity photo ever. So, if Ellen’s allowed to take a selfie, why are we coming down on you for doing the same thing? Firstly, you’re not Ellen, and Ellen can do absolutely anything and make it look cool. Fact. Secondly, because while you’re pointing that iPhone at your duck face, there’s probably a pretty good night out/ gig/TV show going on round about you. Think about it; before selfies, what did you do on a night out?

www.scotcampus.com

Sure, you probably took the odd picture of your friends and maybe even convinced the barman to take one of you all, but chances are you did a lot more talking and a lot less posing. Now how do we get back to the simple times of drinking, dancing and not sharing your evening with anyone outside of your inner circle? If you’re feeling really brave you could impose a no-phones rule on your next night out. Shock horror, we know, but with no Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and – of course – camera to distract you, you might just find yourself having real fun with your friends for the first time in a long time. You’ll also instantly be more attractive to the opposite (or same) sex, as you’ll appear more relaxed and approachable if you’re having a

laugh, as opposed to posing under a screen all night. Woohoo! Can’t bring yourself to ditch your phone entirely? Uninstall your social media apps for the evening. While this may not stop you from taking selfies, it’ll certainly make it harder to post them for the entire world to see, therefore limiting you from irritating your followers with constant photos. Chances are you’ll be too busy nursing your hangover the next day to even remember to post them, or if you do you’ll be a lot more selective, again eliminating the annoyance factor. Whether you’re pro-selfie or on Team Karl, remember: selfies sans clothing are never a good idea. Now use your best judgment next time you hit ‘front-facing’ ;-)

LIFE77

Gets You Nowhere

N

ormcore. You’ve probably heard this word being banded about over the past few months, seen it written about in fashion blogs and slipped into conversation by your friends. But what is it? Why has it happened? And should you be getting involved? Well, it can apply to anything, really. From the act of purposely dressing in non-descript, logoless clothing, to eating food so simply prepared it doesn’t merit a #foodporn Instagram snap, Normcore is the idea of living a trendless life. You’re not driven by what’s on the catwalk, where the new hottest restaurant is, whether you should be ditching spin class for Psycle… or anything anyone else says you should be doing. Sounds life a simpler way of life, right? But what happens when you genuinely like a trend? That Chanel pearl headphones necklace was so amazing that you and thousands of other fashion fans hotfooted it to Zara to snap up their £15.99 alternative, but does that automatically knock you out of the Normcore race? I know I’m asking a lot of questions here, but there’s just something about the idea of Normcore I don’t get.

78LIFE

by Adriana Miller

NORMCORE

Surely if one is trying to be Normcore then you are following a trend by trying not to be trendy? Those perfectly cut Acne jeans you forked out £200 for. Your supply of plain APC T-shirts, because Topshop just won’t do, the Uniqlo cashmere sweaters fashion editors have been wearing every winter since time began… there are definite trends to be found within this absence of trend. K-Hole, a New York trend forcasting agency credited with coining the term, sums it up in a tweet. “Normcore finds liberation in being nothing special, and realises that adaptability leads to belonging.” So is it all about fitting in? Of never making a statement? Of being happy because we don’t stand out? I’m not entirely sure. However, what I do know is that I’ve never quite fitted in anywhere and I’m perfectly happy with that. Normcore gets you nowhere.

BEST PAID JOBS of the

21st Century Want to be rolling in the dough when you graduate from uni? Here’s what you need to be doing…

FLYING A PLANE

DIRECTING IT

SPINNING STORIES

Aircraft pilots, flight engineers and flying instructors have a median gross pay of £78,356. Hell. Yeah. Necessary skills or attributes? Good vision. Highers and 150 hours flying practice. A commercial pilot’s licence, obtained by nine theory exams and 25 more hours of flight training, which altogether costs about £60,000. Now we see why they’re paid so well, not to mention the risk factor and literally carrying other people’s lives on your plane – not a career path for the nervous.

Of course computing and whatnot is big money business these days – think how many millions of people rely on it. With a pay range from £30,240 to £76,335, IT directors and the likes generally need a degree, with additional business qualifications if they’re working in a big corporation. Which is usually, as you would imagine, where the big money is.

PR directors get paid big money to make their clients famous. £60,486 is their median gross pay, which they earn by getting coverage for their brands, finding new ways to promote them and changing the way people see their clients. Hopefully for the better. A communications or media-related degree will serve you well, as will a bulging contacts book, and the willingness to suck up to journalists. Like us.

PRACTISING MEDICINE Doctors, surgeons, physicians… all well-paid people. £63,677 is their median gross pay, but £131,298 is what those at the very top of their game can expect to earn, while starting salaries are as low as £19,123. Work hard and prosper is the key here. Oh, and you’ll need that degree, and the post grad and the work experience, and the steady hands.

80LIFE

SAVING LIVES Senior army members, police, firefighters and ambulance services can expect to earn up to £63,481 at the top of their game. Must have nerves of steel and be trained through their specific field. Risky business, but both financially and personally rewarding, we would imagine.

FEELING GOOD For Festival Season

Y

our favourite festivals are just around the corner and making provisions starts here - tickets, tents and travel. Are you ready for fun in the sun or have you not quite made it out of the winter doldrums? Don't despair, while the weather is warming up and line-ups are still being finalised, there's plenty of time to focus on you. Gradually get in to good habits now and be healthy and happy when it matters.

LOOK GOOD

FEEL GOOD

We're all keeping our fingers crossed that the British Summer delivers the goods - in which case you'll want to flaunt yours. It can be tempting to take a quick-route diet, but here's our advice…

We all feel better about ourselves when we know we're on the right, healthy track. It's all too easy to seek solace in junk food when the sun isn't out but summer's on its way. Could your diet do with a bit of tweaking?

• Aim to get active in addition to your freshly tweaked healthy diet. Spring is here so get out for a walk or practice for festivals with fun at the park – take friends and a Frisbee. Some fat is important for health, but do limit the saturated kind. Check the colour-coded front of pack labelling when shopping, if saturates is a red then maybe reconsider. • Cut ties with the biscuit tin and try snacking less, or when you do reach for fruits and vegetables. Houmous with carrot sticks might be a good option. Carrots contain carotene, a form of Vitamin A, which helps maintain good vision - and might help when you're trying to find your tent in the dark!

www.scotcampus.com

• We should all be eating 5 portions of fruit and veg a day. There's plenty of fresh produce coming into season but there's such a variety to choose from including tinned or frozen. A third of your diet should be based on starchy foods like bread, potatoes and pasta, which are a good source of energy and nutrients. Some people think starchy carbs are fattening, but they're actually lower in calories than foods that are high in fat. • If you could be eating more of the above items, then maybe you could also be eating less confectionery, salty snacks and sugary drinks. It's all about getting the balance right.

SEX in a TENT?” One of our male writers – who shalt not be named – says sex at a festival is overrated. He should know…

I

n 2012 me and my thengirlfriend packed up my car with food, booze, a tent and sleeping bags, and drove to good old Balado to watch The Stone Roses and Kasabian headline T in the Park. Oh, and we also packed a hefty supply of condoms to see us through the weekend. We had never had sex in a tent before and something about the almostpublic space appealed to both of our exhibitionist streaks. Oh how wrong we were… Arriving to pitch tent on Thursday night, we quickly made friends with the neighbours, called our pals to see where they were camping and had a few drinks to get the party started. The party went on a little (okay, a lot) later than expected, meaning night one ended with me and my girlfriend passed out atop our sleeping bags, not even managing to spoon let alone anything else.

82LIFE

Friday. Friday would be the day. With Olly Murs and Florence and her Machine as foreplay, a tent quickie was definitely on the cards, but alas our friendly neighbours were a little too friendly and kept us up half the night with their own shagging antics.

There’s nothing like the sound of another couple getting it on mere inches away from you to make you question if you ever want to have sex again. There was squelching. Enough said. Saturday. Vowing we ourselves would be quieter, we finally escaped to our tent after The Stone Roses, and whacked on the iPod speakers

I had handily remembered to pack. Getting down to business, we found out approximately halfway there that the only thing that kills the mood faster than hearing another couple making sweet baby love, is hearing somebody spew outside your tent. I was down to halfmast before you could say, “who whitey’d?” Finishing off – if you can even call it that – we managed a laugh. My then-girlfriend turned to me and said, “Who wants to have sex in a tent anyway?” Turns out, I do, but that’s not the only reason she’s no longer my girlfriend folks. However, we won’t get into that, just make sure if you’re planning on any tent action at any festivals this year that you wrap it up and let my tale be a warning to you. If you manage to make fireworks happen then you’re a better man (or lady) than me and my then-girlfriend.

SPOTLIGHT ON… 84LIFE

@Scotcampus

Angie Davis, Fashion Make Up Artist Tell us a bit about your course and why you chose it‌ I had previously done two evening classes in basic makeup and fashion makeup and decided that I wasn't ready to stop learning. It wasn't an easy decision to make as I am now a mature student and had previously studied music before my kids were born. My oldest son was diagnosed with autism four years ago and it was after leaving work to be his full time carer that pushed me to go back to college in the first place. I missed doing something for myself and wanted to make our lives better for the whole family.

Which designer would you most like to work with? Christopher Kane without a doubt, I am currently doing my graded on his work. I love everything about him and the fact he's from Glasgow is even better! What advice would you give to other aspiring makeup artists? My advice would be that if you have a passion for something then to never give up. Try to make as many contacts as possible with other creatives and assist other makeup artists on shoots as often as you can.

What do you enjoy most about fashion make up? I love how fast paced fashion makeup is and how diverse it can be. One day you can be working alone on a small independent local company for Asos Marketplace, then the next you can be working within a large team for a high profile fashion show. What has been your favourite shoot to work on and why? I think my favourite shoot was my very first one. It unleashed the beast if you like and made me realise that this is what I want to do and that I might actually be not too bad at it! It was a cold snowy day in a disused warehouse in Glasgow which has since been demolished. I can still remember how high the adrenaline was when I got home that night!

How I bagged my

DREAM JOB

A

s a member of Team Cavanagh/Barto's Weightlifting Club, Haris has excelled in his sport so much that his performances rightfully earned him a place on the National Scotland Squad. As we all know, this year is a momentous occasion for Scotland and Glasgow after being picked to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games. While the stage is being set and the world waits in anticipation, Haris tells us about himself and what he has to accomplish in order to win his place on the Commonwealth team. How did you get into weightlifting? I first started weightlifting at the age of 16 while I was at school. I competed in a regional strength competition involving a deadlift and I won my regional heats. That’s the reason my coach Ray Cavanagh showed interest in coaching me the technical lifts involved in Olympic Weightlifting; so you could say I was at the right place at the right time! What are you studying and how do you juggle training with your studies? I am studying Biomedical Science at Glasgow Caledonian University. As it’s my final year, the work load along with intensive training is a major challenge! However, the university are extremely helpful in supporting me every step of the way by extending deadlines if I need a little extra time.

86LIFE

What do you have to do to get a place on the Commonwealth team? If I want to get to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow I need to lift a total of 255kg within the 69kg weight category. This has to be achieved at the Commonwealth Games qualifiers. The final team will be announced end of May, after being put forward to the Commonwealth Games Council. How do feel about the Commonwealth Games being in Glasgow? What affect is it having on you and the athletes you know? Competing at a home only happens once in a lifetime and I’m sure other athletes will agree that the Scottish crowd will make it a special occasion for everyone involved.

Personally, it will be a massive achievement to represent my country but there are plenty of challenges which have to be overcome to get there so you can't get ahead of yourself!

G

lasgow 2014 is just around the corner, kicking off on July 23rd, with 17 sports on the agenda. From Aquatics to Wrestling, allow us to give you a brief rundown of what you could be seeing this summer…

AQUATICS Venues Tollcross International Swimming Centre (Swimming) & Royal Commonwealth Pool, Edinburgh (Diving) Dates Two sessions daily from July 24th-August 2nd Split into two disciplines – swimming and diving – aquatics is one of the most graceful, yet physically demanding sports of the Games. Scotland has claimed a medal for swimming before, but can we do it again? Only time will tell. Michael Jamieson, who claimed a silver medal in the 200m Breaststroke Final at London 2012, is our biggest hope. Watch out for Tom Daley in the Diving – give him a wee cheer from us!

ATHLETICS Venues Hampden Park Stadium (Track & Field) & Glasgow City Marathon Course (Marathon) Dates Sessions daily from July 27th-August 2nd Comprising sprints, middledistance, long-distance and field events, Athletics is definitely one to watch if you’re after an adrenaline rush, especially with rumours flying that Usain Bolt – the fastest man on the planet – is set to compete in the Men’s 100m Final.

88LIFE

BADMINTON Venue Emirates Arena Dates Sessions daily from July 24th-August 3rd Your granny might play it, but when played by the best of the best, it’s the fastest racket sport in the world. Expect to see shuttlecocks flying through the air at a speed of 300km/h.

BOXING Venues SECC, with the finals held in the SSE Hydro Date Sessions daily from July 25th-August 2nd, with the exception of July 31st Ten weight categories, eight days, three rounds. Glasgow 2014 will see the first inclusion of woman’s Boxing on the Commonwealth Games programme; an exciting development, we’re sure you’ll agree, with Flyweight, Lightweight and Middleweight categories all accounted for.

CYCLING Venues Cathkin Braes Mountain Bike Trails (Mountain Bike), Glasgow City Road and Time Trial Courses (Road) & Emirates Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome (Track) Dates Sessions daily from July 24th-27th, then on July 29th, 31st and August 3rd

Mixing three different disciplines, there’s something for speed demons (Track) and outdoors types (Mountain Bike) alike, but can anyone repeat Sir Chris Hoy’s success in his namesake velodrome?

GYMNASTICS Venue SECC Precinct Dates Sessions daily from July 24th-August 1st, with the exception of July 27th The one we all wish we could do, Gymnastics, gets two disciplines for the Games; Artistic and Rhythmic. Whilst only the ladies compete in Rhythmic – despite Nick Grimshaw and Olly Murs’ best efforts during Sport Relief – Artistic is open to both sexes. From the Pommel Horse to the Floor, expect some seriously impressive skills.

HOCKEY Venue Glasgow National Hockey Centre Dates Sessions daily from July 24th-August 3rd There will be 10 countries competing in both the Men’s and Women’s Hockey, and we’re intrigued to see if anyone can rival Australia in the Men’s, considering they’ve grabbed every title since Hockey was recognised by the Commonwealth in 2008. One to watch.

@Scotcampus

JUDO Venue SECC Precinct Dates Sessions daily from July 24th-26th The Judo run at Glasgow 2014 may be short ‘n’ sweet, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s any less of a physical sport than the others, with huge strength needed to participate. There are 14 weight categories, meaning 14 medals on offer, with both male and female athletes competing.

LAWN BOWLS Venue Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre Dates Sessions daily from July 24th-August 1st Another one your elderly relatives might enjoy, Lawn Bowls becomes ever more exciting when there are medals at stake, and also comprises the most diverse group of young and old athletes. There will also be two Para-Sport events for bowlers who are visually impaired or have a physical disability, making it one of the most inclusive events on offer.

NETBALL Venue SECC Precinct Dates Sessions daily from July 24th-August 3rd You’ll be wishing you had stayed in your high school team till the end when you see how exhilarating a good competitive game of Netball can be. Australia and New Zealand are likely to go far (they put their kids in grow bags over there or something), but the Jamaican side are quietly upping their game, so really there’s everything to play for.

RUGBY SEVENS Venue Ibrox Stadium Dates July 26th-27th 45 games of Rugby Sevens will take place in just two days at Glasgow 2014. Unfamiliar with the concept?

www.scotcampus.com

Each game lasts just 14 minutes, with seven players on each of the two teams competing , hence how organisers can squeeze all that action in. With Rugby Sevens making its Olympic debut at Rio 2016, the Commonwealth will serve as a practise run, making it more competitive than ever.

SHOOTING Venue Barry Buddon Shooting Centre, Angus Dates Sessions daily from July 25th-29th Four disciplines make up the Glasgow 2014 Shooting schedule, from Clay Target to Full Bore, Pistol and Small Bore. Requiring impeccable skill and concentration, the Canadians could excel here again, though Scotland are most certainly in with a chance of a medal.

SQUASH Venue Scotstoun Sports Campus Dates Sessions daily from July 24th-August 3rd Men’s and Women’s singles events will take place alongside single sex and mixed doubles, with five gold medals at stake for the racqueteers. Fast-paced and requiring as much stamina from the crowd as from the athletes, once you watch a game of Squash you’ll never see Wimbledon the same way again.

TABLE TENNIS Venue Scotstoun Sports Campus Dates Sessions daily from July 24th-August 2nd An increasingly popular sport due to the wealth of clubs popping up and sociable table tennis events, everyone is upping their game, with the Scottish men’s team on great form. However, Singapore tend to take the lead, and something tells us they’ll have gold in the bag once again.

TRIATHLON Venue Strathclyde Country Park Dates July 24th & 26th Being great at swimming, running and cycling must be some feat – we struggle to excel at one of them! A 1,500m open-water swim, followed by a 40km road cycle, with a 10k run at the end is no mean feat – we reckon everyone who competes in the Triathlon deserves a medal.

WEIGHTLIFTING Venue SECC Precinct Dates Sessions daily from July 24th-August 2nd, with the exception of August 1st Another sport we couldn’t even consider doing, Weightlifting sees athletes compete according to 15 different weight categories, from 48kg to 105+kg. Requiring huge endurance, the Nigerians grabbed the most medals at Delhi 2010, but can they repeat the feat?

WRESTLING Venue SECC Precinct Dates Sessions daily from July 29th-31st Who doesn’t love a casual bit of Wrestling? One of the best sports to watch (in our opinion), both Men’s and Women’s Freestyle will be taking place during Glasgow 2014, and we can’t wait to see the grappling. Interview: James Johnstone, Scotland 7s Centre

James Johnstone is a professional rugby player with Glasgow Warriors, a product of the Scottish Rugby Elite Development programme and plays centre for the Scotland 7s squad, who will compete at this summer’s Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. As if that wasn’t enough, James is also studying Business Management with Marketing at Herriot Watt University – who says you can’t have it all? Here the 23-year-old explains how he balances his passion for rugby with looking after his future and why he recommends you should do the same. You're currently at the Hong Kong Sevens – can you tell us a little about the tournament?

How do you balance training and international games with your uni work?

Yes, Hong Kong Sevens is part of the HSBC World Sevens Series. It is established as the home of sevens rugby and is a fantastic event to be participating or spectating in.

I balance the work at times with difficulty, with training becoming demanding at certain stages of the season, therefore looking ahead and trying to schedule time for when I can get university work done is important. Planning is usually the key way to balance. If I’m away at tournaments I usually have a lot of rest time and so that time becomes the perfect opportunity to get into uni work.

How did you get into rugby in the first place and how did you end up playing for Scotland? I first got introduced to rugby through a friend when I was just five or six years old. I played for my local rugby team before playing for my school team. This is where I first started representing Scotland at age grade level, for example the U17 and U18 teams. I then went to university at Heriot Watt and this is where rugby and university clashed a little. However, I kept playing rugby and was asked in the 2010/2011 season to represent Scotland at sevens rugby. What's been the best opportunity you've had through rugby so far? Travelling the world and competing in so many different countries. The tournament in Hong Kong I have just competed in is, I would suggest, the best opportunity I have had.

90LIFE

What's been the most challenging part of juggling both? The most challenging part of juggling both is trying to attend group meetings and presentations when training is also on – especially if I'm out of the country playing. Why do you think it's important to keep up your studies when essentially you already have a job? I think it is very important to keep up with my studies while doing rugby as a career. The obvious reasons are that injury and age can prevent you from doing your job. Having something that can help you change your career path certainly

helps. The career of a rugby player is also short and planning for a career after rugby is certainly worth preparing for, and studying is a great way to do this. What advice would you give to any students hoping for a career in rugby? Make sure communication between your university and yourself is strong, and the communication through your rugby coach or contact is strong and transparent. What games/events are you most looking forward to in the rugby calendar for the rest of this year? The last two legs of the Sevens World Series, which includes the home tournament at Scotstoun Stadium in May. I am also looking forward to the home Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, which involves the Rugby Sevens event, held at Ibrox Stadium. See our Commonwealth Countdown on p88-89 for more info on Rugby Sevens at Glasgow 2014

How To Do

THE WORLD CUP

In 3 Ways

W

hether you’re Brazil bound, watching down your local or doing anything in your power to avoid the whole spectacle, June 12th to July 13th needn’t be a nightmare for anyone, as Scotcampus have got your 2014 World Cup guide sussed. From how to get there to how to get involved if you’re not, we really have thought of everything – no need to thank us! Life’s A Beach So you’ve made the (fairly) lastminute decision to travel to Brazil for the World Cup – lucky you!!! You’ve got the funds and the time off work, but how do you get there? British Airways (Britishairways.com) fly directly from London Heathrow to Guarulhos Airport in Sao Paulo, but at the time of writing a one-way economy flight was £1485 and rising, for the entire duration of the World Cup. Fly with TAP Portugal (Flytap.com) from Heathrow with a short stop in Lisbon and your fare could fall to £750 one-way. Either way, you’ll have to be fast, because prices are getting higher the closer the Cup gets. Give Skyscanner

92LIFE

(Skyscanner.com) a whirl to find your cheapest or most direct option. Hotel prices are also terrifying throughout the tournament and the good ones are pretty much full. One option for your time spent in Rio is a spot of camping at British expats’ Andy Allan and Stephen Pike’s purpose-built site, offering tents for £35 per night, with space for up to 800 people. Based in Recreio, a western suburb of Rio that is thought to be one of the city’s safest areas, it’s a budget-friendly option that also offers plenty of socialising with your fellow football fans. When complete, the site will house bars, big screens showing all the matches, and will have 24-hour security. Where do we sign up? Worldcupcampingrio.com, as a matter of fact. Consider renting rooms in people’s houses if you’re going over for the whole month or even couch surfing (Couchsurfing.org). With matches located all over the country, it could be the cheapest and most efficient way to do two nights here, three nights there, etc.

That brings us to internal travel. Even once you’ve forked out for your ticket to Brazil, there are still domestic flights to consider, as the World Cup matches are split over 12 cities. One such city, Manaus, is 1,768 miles away from Rio – a four-hour flight. TAM Airlines (Tam.com.br) is currently quoting a reasonable £126 for a one-way ticket, but that price looks set to rise too, up to £643 (!!!) each way. However, don’t let that put you off; if you’ve got money to burn we can think of far worse ways to spend it. If you need to be a little more careful, do your research and buy long before it’s time to fly, to prevent your internal flights going the same way as your journey from the UK. Oh, and what about those allimportant match tickets? If there are any left by the time you read this, you’ll find them on Fifa.com/tickets – get clicking! This is one trip too pricey for even the keenest traveller to show up with nothing but hopes of finding a golden ticket over there…

@Scotcampus

The World Cup Party Staying at home through lack of funds, lack of annual leave or just the sheer inability to get yourself to Brazil? Be the hero of your gang and throw a World Cup party for all to enjoy. Despite kicking off on a Thursday, everyone loves a school night sesh, so you might as well start the month with a bang. Hopefully you’ve got a massive telly to screen the Brazil vs. Croatia game on, otherwise you probably wouldn’t be the nominated party host, but if not get your paws on a projector and turn your living room into a Sao Paulo cinema pronto. Ask everyone to dress in green, yellow and blue, the colours of the Brazilian flag. While some of them might be choosing to support Croatia, this is your World Cup opening party, so it’s only right that the host country should be honoured. Especially since Scotland isn’t involved.

if it’s a (rare) sunny evening and you have a garden fence to utilise, and get some inflatable palm trees erected. When in Brazil…

CAIPIRINHA RECIPE

Snacks should be themed, obviously, as should the drinks. Think Coxinhas (fried balls of chicken and catupiry cheese) and Mandioca Frita (chip-like sticks of fried yucca) for savoury munchies, Brazilian bananas (bananas baked in citrus sauce and topped with coconut) as a dessert alternative and Caipirinhas all round.

Ingredients:

And for after the football? Carnival jams whether Brazil win or not. Just keep those Caipirinhas flowing.

Light Rum (can substitute vodka) White sugar (3 Tbsp.) Lime Ice Method: 1. Cut the lime into eight wedges. Discard the white part in the middle. 2. Spoon the sugar into a glass and muddle the lime on top. 3. Fill the glass with ice cubes. 4. Pour in your rum or vodka. 5. Stir and serve!

Haters Gonna Hate Don’t like football? Are you sure? Or is it just that you don’t understand it? If it’s the latter, the World Cup is the perfect time to get involved, starting with that aforementioned World Cup party. While chances are no one will appreciate you asking questions all through the tournament’s opening match, if you get there in time for the pre-game Caipirinhas, you might just find yourself enjoying it. However, if you just really, really don’t like football, that’s okay. Here are our top ten tips for completely and utterly ignoring the World Cup’s existence:

TOP TEN TIPS for ignoring the World Cup 1. Don’t read any newspapers from around June 1st until July 20th. Ignorance is bliss. 2. Limit your website browsing to fashion and celebrity gossip sites. Ditch the Mail Online for a month, as painful as it may be not to know who Katie Hopkins has been laying into this week, or who has the worst case of camel toe. 3. Have a social media detox. A month off of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram will make you appreciate real people again. Or remember how awful it is when you can actually smell them. 4. Avoid sports shops like the plague, even if your only pair of running shorts develop a hole in the crotch. Breezy.

5. Wear headphones on all methods of public transport and at work. Blast your favourite album LOUD. May we recommend some Jay-Z? He doesn’t even know what football is – he calls it “soccer”. 6. Find a new favourite pub that doesn’t have a television. 7. Stop listening to the radio. Replace it with Spotify or music you actually paid for. You win, your favourite artists win, everybody wins. 8. Play dead when any World Cup party invitations come through. Or at least play too busy to reply to a text. 9. Immerse yourself in boxsets or Netflix whenever you’re not at work. Might we recommend six seasons of Gossip Girl followed by four seasons of The OC? 10. Sorry, we lied. You can’t hide from the World Cup, so you might as well embrace it!

The Summer of SELFIES

Editor’s Note: So you read our selfie feature over on p76-77, but we thought we’d give regular Backside contributor Ross Fingland a chance to have his say on the snaps – enjoy!

2

014 might be the year of the Horse in the Chinese Zodiac, but let’s just overlook that, and rename it something a little closer to home. Now the name I’ve chosen will be easy for you all to remember. It’s fun and full of crumbling western ideals, which is fitting for a nation whose people are so concerned by vanity, and a little selfgratification. I propose that the summer of 2014 should hereby be known as The Summer of Selfies!

Now, vanity is a sin –fact. However I live by the strict moto that “Livin’ in Sin is the new thing”. Well, that and the new iOS 7.1 update means my iPhone 5S’ camera takes spectacular pictures with the front facing lens, but that’s totally beside the point. What I’m trying to say is that all of these magically irritating creations of man all have one thing in common... Well maybe two, and that’s a front facing camera and unquenchable thirst for showing off.

As the time has finally come to start saying goodbye to the cold, miserable wintertide, we can begin to look forward to what will hopefully be a glorious few summer months – fingers and toes crossed for a 2013 re-run. That being said, the sun does bring out dangerous levels of self-confidence in many. Not only does it bring out the flurry of sunglasses, but also of muffin tops – you’re not Ryan Gosling and you’re not Britney Spears circa I’m Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman in her low riding jeans, so I’m speaking for humanity here when I saw we aren’t interested. Put it away, love.

Our generation is the first to really live within a recorded society. We share our lives, strengths, vulnerabilities and everything in between online. Some of our best friends are cyber, and although you may never meet one another, we are still able to be completely involved through self-shot moments.

Summer also begins the endless social media announcements of totes fetch plans, like “OHEMGEE SO EXCITED FOR T xox” or “OOH AH MALIA” and the endless stream of “Almost beach ready” selfies. As far as I can work out, the world of selfie-takers is very similar to the cafeteria of our generation’s defining movie, Mean Girls. *In a flawless Janis Ian impersonation* You’ve got your posers, attention seekers, lad’s lads, Barbie wannabes, general wannabes, try-hards, self righteous posers, emos and, of course, everyone’s favourite... the hipsters!

After all, “We’re here for a good time, not a long time.” So why shouldn’t we capture every second that counts? Vanity might be a sin and I’m sure “vain” is something we’ve all been called at some point, but just because we want to remember the moments in our lives through selfies with friends on nights out that were so crazy if you didn’t have a camera we would have no way of ever really knowing just what went down, that doesn’t make us bad people. So this summer, pull together your favourite life quotes, get those filters ready and get snapping. The summer of selfies is HERE – and you better work, bitch! Ross Fingland is a massive Britney Spears fan (in case you hadn’t guessed) and blogs at Rossfingland.wordpress.com

ontinuing with the adrenaline-junkie, riskyour-life-in-a-controlledenvironment vibe, I decided that this month would be the perfect time to do my first bungee jump.

On perhaps the wettest day of the year, I took my family on a little birthday road trip to Pitlochry, a small village on the A9 north, the home of the Highland fling bungee jump platform. Being stuck in the middle seat of packed and clammy car between my dad and my granny wasn’t exactly the way I’d planned on spending my 21st birthday. But it was the pounding hangover and incredibly sensitive bladder that were the real issues. We got debriefed at the visitor’s centre where I finally had to tell my dad that he was doing the bungee jump too. He was pretty surprised but he’s generally down for whatever so it wasn’t entirely unexpected when he volunteered to go first. All five of us were shuttled down to the bridge where we were squeezed in our harnesses and clipped onto our ropes. We said our final goodbyes to our loved ones and climbed the metal ladder to the platform. I’m alright with heights and, to be honest, I was really excited to get started.

#3 Bungee Jump

We were told not to do anything stupid by our guides. They didn’t elaborate but I’d imagine that would entail not jumping off without putting on the bungee chord. Big Rick (my dad) was the first one strapped in and sent on his way. The old man walked up all nonchalant, stuck his arms out wide and jumped off like he was diving into a swimming pool. Three words: Hard. As. Nails. He came up buzzing and then I had to sit through three other people doing the exact same thing before I finally got my shot. Talk about suspense! I had my GoPro camera strapped to my chest the whole time and you can see all of the footage on the Scotcampus website! I got all strapped in and teetered on the edge for a couple of seconds before, essentially, stepping off. For all of two seconds your body and your mind are at odds with each other as, until the chord kicks in, it feels like you're not strapped to anything.

any tension the more you start to believe your body. That’s when you’re jerked back up into the air and it’s over. I don’t really know what I was expecting but it was just… okay. It’s a totally exhilarating twosecond experience, but that’s all. I’d recommend you do it - even if just to prove to yourself that you can - but you’ll only need to do it the once.
