nother student year has arrived and - as usual here at Scotcampus – we’re kicking it off with our annual Freshers’ Festival. Why should you attend this wonderful event on October 2nd and 3rd? Turn to page 10 to find out and for a full list of our exhibitors. While we’re in the mood for celebration, I don’t think anything could make me happier than Paolo Nutini’s return to both music and the Scotcampus front cover. Having previously appeared on the magazine in October 2006, we couldn’t quite wait 10 years before inviting him back again, and we’re glad he’s come home. And, speaking of anniversaries, can you believe it’s been 20 years since the first ever episode of Friends aired on TV? Over on page 44 we’re reminding ourselves of flatmate lessons learned by Chandler, Monica, Ross, Rachel, Phoebe and Joey, that we could all do with taking on board. Enjoy the issue and see you at Freshers’ Festival!

THE

MEASURE Freshers

Freshers time comes but once a year and what a wonderful time it is. From our very own Scotcampus Freshers’ Festival, to discounted drinks in your city’s bars and clubs, whether you’re actually a first year student or not becomes totally irrelevant. Get involved over at Freshersfestival.com.

Orange Is The New Black If you’re not already invested in this Netflix original series, you should be. Binge watch the first two seasons of the prison drama now, before season three arrives, and you’re way too far behind to catch up.

Halloween One of Scotcampus’ favourite holidays, like, ever. What will be the most popular costume this year? Kimye for couples? Cara Delevingne’s eyebrows? Jay-Z trapped in a lift? All viable options, but we’re still deciding which one makes the cut for our annual extravaganza.

4FRONT

Time Speeding Up Seriously, HOW can it be September already? We don’t want to think about uni or Christmas or getting to the end of another year without having reached our goals. Again. Next year we’re hunting down Bernard and stealing his watch.

Transeasonal Dressing It’s freezing when we leave the house – we wear a coat. It’s sweltering by lunchtime – we take the coat off. It’s raining by hometime – seriously?! Oh what we’d give for defined seasons in this country, instead of random days of heat broken up by rain, rain and more rain. Sigh.

Twerking We pulled a muscle last time we cleared a dance floor to get our Miley Cyrus on. Somebody invent a new dance craze that involves less bending, please?

THE BOY IS BACK In Interview: Paolo Nutini

P

TOWN

aolo Nutini is a hard man to get hold of. With our cover interview scheduled for just six days before print deadline, we knew we were cutting it fine, but little did we know how many times the chat would be shifted – bringing us (and our nerves) all the way to 6.30pm the day before Scotcampus’ September issue went to print. However, one thing is for sure: Paolo Nutini is worth the wait. Having caught the man himself performing at V Festival the weekend before our interview – the festival site’s lack of phone signal being one reason for the rescheduling – it’s our first topic of conversation. “Ah, yeah, I enjoyed Sunday,” says Paolo. “It was a strange feeling though, almost as if we were reintroducing ourselves, which isn’t a feeling I had at Glastonbury or T In The Park. Obviously we’ve changed on this album, and also changed the arrangements of our

6FRONT

older songs, but it was still an odd one.”

Those new arrangements have perhaps been controversial, the crowds at both V Festival and Radio 1’s Big Weekend earlier in the summer not yet 100% sure how to sing along to 2014’s Jenny Don’t Be Hasty, but as Paolo says he’s got good reason to change things up. “I looked at the new record and thought, ‘How do we make an even vaguely cohesive show out of that and where we’ve been before, and where we’re going?’ Some of the songs’ meanings have changed, the sentiment, and you want to be performing the songs honestly,” he says, and considering the variation in Paolo’s three albums – These Streets, Sunny Side Up and Caustic Love – you can’t deny the man’s got a point. “There was a time where it seemed daunting, but then it became exciting, and for the most part people have accepted it,” he continues. “For some people, if it

By Jennifer Lynn

was ‘their song’, they’re maybe not so happy, but I’d rather piss you off than lie to you!” Having taken five years to make this year’s number one smash, Caustic Love, Paolo is equally honest about how his personal life has affected his new music. “The last five years has definitely been a very educational stage in my life,” he says. “You have less and less people to rely on, a lot of things have happened good and bad, and it’s shaped me into what I’m becoming. “Rather than let even the worst things disable me, I make a positive out of it, and it all builds up to who I am now. Just taking the time to live a bit more of a discreet life, with my friends and family, and being able to listen to what’s going on in their lives has been inspiration for the songs.”

"Rather than let even the worst things disable me, I make a positive out of it" @Scotcampus

It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say Paolo was lonely back in the old days of constant touring and recording, with him labelling that time in his life “a little bit insular: you make 50 five-minute friendships a day, but none of them stick.” However, is there any truth in reports that he considered not coming back to music? “It’s not that giving up music was ever the problem, but I’m on a big label, and it means you can’t just fire out songs whenever you feel like putting them out,” Paolo explains. “It’s more a question of how long I want that to be a reality, than how long I want to keep making songs for people.” Heading out on tour in October, Paolo’s two sold-out dates at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro are something he’s looking forward to, despite huge venues being against his personal preferences. “It’s no secret that I prefer gigs with three or four hundred people, where somebody’s got their arm

www.scotcampus.com

on your monitor, and somebody’s looking up your nose,” he says. “I don’t have a lot of bravado on stage. I don’t dance. A lot of the value in my music is the stories in the songs and they come across better in a conversational environment. “When the audience gets past a number that makes sense to me it just becomes a watercolour of faces. It’s like stepping up to a challenge rather than welcoming them into my world. But the Hydro seems unique in a way. I’ve heard some bands that have played there – apart from Clapton [laughs] – comment on how musical it is in comparison to the SECC. A lot of bands are really excited that now when they have a tour and they stop in Glasgow, they have a venue that reaches out to more people while maintaining musicality, and a warm enough sound. That really excites me about going there.” As for his fellow Scots, Paolo speaks highly of one Glasgow band, whom he recently covered in Radio 1’s Live Lounge. “I think I’ve staked

my claim as one of Chvrches’ biggest fans,” he laughs. “I’m really happy for the Twin Atlantic guys too. They’ve just put out their new album and it’s been received so well. Whenever I go back to Paisley there are so many great singers and songwriters just trying to project their music further; if I go into a bar, or if I happen to go to church out of curiosity to see what’s going on, it’s all great. There’s so much good shit coming out of Scotland, it’s unreal.” And to those smaller Scottish acts, who haven’t yet been discovered, Paolo’s got some words of wisdom. “I don’t know if I’m anyone to give advice, but take the opportunities, take them very seriously and keep your karma good. Luck and good fortune play a fucking massive part! Stay in tune, get a good doctor and there you go.”

Paolo Nutini’s third album, Caustic Love, is out now. He plays Glasgow’s SSE Hydro on October 27th and 28th.

WHEN Be Their Little Rock ‘N’ Roll Queen

Who doesn’t love Ed Sheeran? Super talented, super humble and, well, just generally super, we love seeing what he can do with a loop pedal. Playing Glasgow’s SSE Hydro on October 30th and 31st, might we recommend a redhead wig this Halloween?

The Subways are back! The Subways are back! Specifically, they’re back at Edinburgh’s Electric Circus, on October 21st. Summer single My Heart Is Pumping to a Brand New Beat reflects their fresh new sound, but Billy, Charlotte and Josh will undoubtedly still pull some golden oldies out of the bag. “You are, the sun, you are the only one…”

Interview: Rixton

S

hould you have space for another band of boys in your life – not a boyband, might we say, but four lads from Manchester who all play their own instruments – then we’ve got the perfect guys. Signed to the same label as Justin Bieber, Rixton accidentally got really big in the US, and now Jake, Danny, Charley and Lewi are breaking the UK one hit single at a time. You’ve probably heard their summer smash Me & My Broken Heart, but now let bassist/keyboardist Danny give you the full scoop… What was your favourite festival of the summer? We performed in Western Super Mare, on a beach, overlooking the sea. It was fantastic and there were about 10,000 people there. Everybody was just up for a really good time, it was windy as hell, nobody could stand up properly, but it was a lot of fun. You played Wireless festival, in London’s Finsbury Park, which had such an impressive line-up. Who on that bill would you most like Rixton to collaborate with? Obviously Bruno Mars! We’re really big fans, we’ve taken a lot of inspiration from his songs and his style, and he’s just so incredibly cool. I think it’d be great to work with him. What about Kanye?! That would be unpredictable! It would be amazing and I think his music’s great, but I wouldn’t know what to do; I’d be nervous the whole time. In case he went on one of his famous rants? Yeah, but I’d kind of like to see one! Some of it makes sense in a really strange way. There’s method to his madness. He’s very cool. You guys have opened for both Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande; who’s your favourite of the two? They’re both very different. I think my favourite would

22Music

probably be Justin Bieber… Well, no, I can’t really pick one. I love Ariana Grande’s music, it’s got that nineties vibe and her vocals are insane, but Justin Bieber is just a complete showman. When he’s on stage he owns it. I think they’re both great and they’re both really nice people. You’re signed to Scooter Braun’s label, as is Biebs. How did that happen? It was very strange. We were uploading covers, having fun with it and just doing what we do to see what kind of reaction we’d get, and we were in a tiny little studio in North London when we got a call. It was to Jake’s phone and he said, ‘Hey, it’s Scooter Braun,’ and Jake hung up! He thought it was one of his friends pranking him, but then he [Scooter] rang back and said, ‘No really, this is Scooter, we want to meet you guys.’ They flew over within 24 hours, we hit it off straight away and the next minute we were in New York, recording our album. That was last August. It was such a whirlwind. Then we started getting traction in the US because Ryan Seacrest started playing our song on his radio show. We’re not sure how he got hold of it, I think he’s friends with Scooter, and he loved the song. Then it started playing in New York and spread like wildfire across the country. We went over to LA for two days to do an interview and ended up staying for four months and doing an entire radio tour. It was crazy.

@Scotcampus

WORKING WITH KANYE WOULD BE

Unpredictable!

If that hadn’t happened, what would you be doing today, on an average Friday? Probably trying to write some good songs in a studio somewhere while slightly hungover. We’ve been doing this for nearly six years, me and Jake, and we’ve been trying to perfect the writing thing. We always wanted longevity, so we wanted the songs first before we got anything else, and the Scooter Braun thing was a complete stroke of luck Have you had any crazy fan moments yet? Yeah, when we were in New York a group of fans tried to break into our hotel room, and they actually managed to get all the way up to the door! Security saw them trying to get in and escorted them out. Then we quickly changed hotels… Other than the US and the UK, where else do you want to break? Well with the UK we haven’t done anything in Scotland yet and we’re a bit upset about that. We’re coming very soon! We’re trying to organise a tour in November, which should coincide with our album release, because we’re going to put that out before the end of the year. As far as other countries go, I’d love to get involved with Australia and Japan; that would be very cool. I love Australia, I love the accent, I think it’s great. D’ya know in Japan they have vending machines with dog outfits in them?

www.scotcampus.com

That we did not know. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve had from anyone in the industry so far?

Genuinely, ‘Don’t be nervous’. It was Scooter who said it and he explained it as in our line of work people want to speak to us, they want to know what we’re doing and our job is to show them our music and pass on our energy. That changed my frame of mind and now I love meeting new people, talking to new people and just performing. What other bands are you into? I’m listening to a lot of The 1975 and 5 Seconds Of Summer are great. They’re like a new version of McFly. The Vamps are great guys, we’ve met them a few times, done a few performances with them. Then R&B like Chris Brown and Usher. What can you tell us about your upcoming debut album? We’ve left a couple of verses unrecorded to leave space for collaborations, which will be very cool, but I can’t give any names away. I don’t even know them yet! It’s incredibly eclectic. A good album reminds you of certain places and of certain times in your life. Hopefully we’ve done that.

In Conversation With...

JESS GLYNNE

T

he voice behind Clean Bandit’s Rather Be and Route 94’s My Love on why those songs aren’t her, and what we should expect from Jess Glynne’s debut album…

Hi Jess! Can you introduce yourself and your favourite alcoholic beverage to Scotcampus?

Was it a relief to get your track Right Here out and make your mark as a solo artist?

Hello, I’m Jess Glynne, and my favourite alcoholic beverage is a Hendricks gin and tonic with cucumber.

Yeah, that’s what I got signed for, I didn’t get signed to be a featured artist. I was signed before Rather Be and My Love, so to be putting the solo stuff in to practise is the best feeling.

Delicious. What are you up to today? Well I’m just drinking a honey and lemon just now, and then I’ve got a studio session, to finish off one of the songs on my album. Exciting! You were at all of the festivals this summer; which one was your favourite? I think Wireless in London was a really big moment for me. Firstly because it’s down the road from my house and secondly because I walked out, not really expecting much, and literally had a full tent. It was an overwhelming feeling, especially as I was one of the first acts on in the afternoon, it was pretty amazing. When did you actually start writing music? When I was at school I didn’t do much music; I kind of shied away from it. I’ve always written songs and sung, but I didn’t take anything too seriously. It wasn’t until I went travelling after school and came back that I decided it was for me. I started work for a management company, helping manage artists, and learned everything about the industry from touring to contracts to recording to promo. It got to a point where I thought ‘I don’t want to work for the artist, I want to be the artist’. I was about 20 at that point and I’m 24 now.

24Music

Are you keen to do more collaborations or would you rather establish your own identity first? I love working with other artists, I love producers, I’d love to have people on my album. Right now though, unless Jay-Z or someone of that scale was to ask me to feature, I wouldn’t do another feature for a while. Is Jay-Z the dream? I think Beyoncé, him; they’re both pretty dreamy, aren’t they? Kanye, Eminem… Jazmine Sullivan, Frank Ocean. There are artists I’d say yes to, but for me right now it’s not about featuring, it’s about solo. What should everyone expect from your album? Are you continuing the party vibes? I mean Rather Be and My Love aren’t me; one’s a house track and one’s a very poppy track. Right Here was a good song to show where I’ve been, but to connect with where I’m going, as I’ve been influenced by soul, R&B, hip hop and pop massively. It’s a ‘me’ album, infused with everything I love, that’s what I’d say. I’ve told everyone not to expect anything and hopefully they’ll like it! Jess Glynne plays Glasgow’s O2 ABC 2 on October 16th

Interview: Owl John aka Scott Hutchison

“ ”

FRIGHTENED

RABBIT

Caused Me To Have A

MENTAL

BREAKDOWN

D

id you see Frightened Rabbit at the O2 Academy in Glasgow last November? Playing two epic sold-out shows as standard, chances are you didn’t notice anything different about the band, especially the fact that frontman Scott Hutchison was on the verge of a mental breakdown. Speaking to Scotcampus about his new solo project, Owl John, Scott shares what caused that dark time and how he – and his fellow Frabbits – found the light again.

26Music

@Scotcampus

You moved to LA four months ago – what have you been up to? Well I played a show last night and other than that I’ve just been living and working. It’s been great. It’s a completely different scenario to living in Edinburgh. It took some adjustment but it’s a wonderful place to live. So we’re chatting Owl John today. First rabbits, now owls; what’s the story? Well for some reason I wanted to add ‘Owl’ to my middle name. I think I came up with it when I was drunk. My real middle name is John and I just thought it would be funny to add ‘Owl’, which I still might do once this record’s done, that could be my way of celebrating. Essentially Owl John is a solo project, but me, Andy from the band and Simon ended up doing the album together, and it became so much of a collaborative project that I felt it would be wrong to call it by my own name. We’re not going to play any shows as a band, but it turned into something more than just me, so that’s why I called it Owl John. As you say it turned into a bit of a collaboration, but initially when you said you were going to do a solo record, was there any animosity? I think last year was so busy for the band, I’ve been working on Frightened Rabbit for almost ten years, and it was time for a break. Everyone wanted to do something else, whether it be making an album as I did, or Grant going off to do his cycling. There was no fear, we discussed it and everyone was happy. It’s not the end of the band, it’s just something else to refresh the palette, and to make sure we’re excited about Frightened Rabbit again when we go back.

www.scotcampus.com

You wrote Owl John the album in two weeks – what was that like putting everything together so quickly? Well that was part of the idea, it shouldn’t have been like making a Frightened Rabbit album; we wanted to make sure the process itself was different. We went in and tried to do a song a day and that’s how it worked. We came out after two weeks in a studio in Mull with an album’s worth of music, but with no lyrics and no vocals, then the week later I moved to LA. I finished the album off here and I quite like the fact that the album is a combination of those two places. It was refreshing to go into the studio with nothing written and essentially come out with an album two weeks later. The first single from the album is called Hate Music. Talk to us about that… It’s about the end of last year, when the band had been touring so much, it actually started to affect my mental health. Frightened Rabbit caused me to have a mental breakdown. It was really shit and that was one of the reasons why we needed a break. Touring, on paper, seems like a good life, but it’s actually a bit of a grind sometimes. I think we just overdid it; not in a rock ‘n’ roll sense, in a work sense. I don’t hate music, but it was at the point where I was not enjoying it anymore, so that song is about that time when I was just in a bit of a bad way. It sounds a bit selfish because I know I’m really lucky with my job and I think it’s one of the best ones you could have, but at the same time – like with any job – if you do too much of it you lose sight of why you’re doing it in the first place. But I’m over it now!

" It's not the end of the band, it's just something else to refresh the palette." What was the most enjoyable thing about making the Owl John album? I think it was making an album with no expectation. Frightened Rabbit has a fan base now, which can have pressures, and while that can be a good thing it can also build up. To go away and make something with none of that attached to it meant we could essentially do whatever we liked and it was really free. And it would be rude of us not to ask; when should we expect new material from Frightened Rabbit? Well that process has begun, we’ve just started dipping our toe into the water, but we hope to have a full album finished by the end of the year. The process for Frightened Rabbit is a bit slower, there’s four of us slinging ideas around, so it’s a wee bit of a longer process. Hopefully we’ll release something at the beginning of next year and then go back in full throttle to touring that record I’d imagine. But I’m not going to think about that just yet!

Owl John’s self-titled album is out now.

Farewell, Festival

SEASON! T

his summer’s festivals proved bigger and better than ever, each line-up eclipsing the last, with moments of musical gold that just wouldn’t happen at a normal gig. With enough magical memories to keep you smiling through winter (or at least until the end of the magazine), check out Team Scotcampus’ 2014 festival highlights…

Radio 1’s Big Weekend Glasgow Green, May 24th & 25th Opening on Saturday morning with One Direction and closing on Sunday night with Katy Perry, Radio 1’s Big Weekend was summer’s biggest pop fest, with the addition of Coldplay on the Saturday night giving it a little street cred. Not that we cared about that when Harry Styles was standing three rows in front of us, grabbing his crotch, but the thousands of helicopter lights poured into the crowd during Sky Full Of Stars was utter magic. Oh, and remember when Chris Martin stuck around to play with Kings Of Leon on Sunday morning? Forget McBusted, it’s all about Kings Of Coldplay.

Capital Summertime Ball Wembley Stadium, June 21st While musically we’d be hard pushed to choose between Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith for our CSB highlight, when it came to putting on a show, Miley had it in the bag. The Ball also marked the return of Cheryl Cole to the spotlight, shortly before she became Mrs Fernandez-Versini, teaching us all the power of Crazy Stupid Love.

28Music

Glastonbury Worthy Farm, June 25th-29th Did she or didn’t she? That was the big question when Dolly Parton took to the Pyramid Stage in the Legends’ slot at this year’s Glasto. We weren’t curious about her plastic surgery – we all know Dolly went under the knife a long time ago – so much as her apparent miming. Whether Dolly did a Britney or not was irrelevant to us; she made the sun shine, and on a festival weekend, that’s all that matters.

T In The Park Balado, July 11th-13th Marking the last time that TITP will take place at Balado, due to gas pipe problems, it felt like the end of an era when Arctic Monkeys closed the show on Sunday. A Scot-heavy line-up, including Biffy, Calvin, Paolo and Twin Atlantic, had us feeling all kinds of patriotic.

V Festival Hylands Park, August 16th & 17th Never in our lives did we think we’d hear Brandon Flowers referencing The Only Way Is Essex, but that’s exactly what happened when The Killers came to Chelmsford, to headline V Fest. There was also the moment when, before the band’s encore, Jimmy Carr came on and made some jokes – he wasn’t even on the festival line-up! Justin Timberlake also deserves a mention here, because he’s Justin Timberlake, and he might have made us cry. In a good way.

7 YEARS OF THE SATURDAYS T

he first time Scotcampus laid eyes on The Saturdays was at Freshers Week in 2008, in Strathclyde Union, where Frankie, Rochelle, Mollie, Vanessa and Una showcased their debut single If This Is Love. Then came the support slot on Girls Aloud’s UK tour and before we knew it they were headlining arenas across the country, starring in their own TV show and – most recently – getting married and having babies. With 18 massive singles under their belts, the girls released their Greatest Hits album on August 11th, and kick off the accompanying tour in Glasgow on September 7th. Here’s all the scoop from Una… Your Greatest Hits album was released in August. Why now? It just felt like the perfect time for us; we’ve been together for seven years, we’ve had 18 singles so we had plenty of material and it just seemed like a good way to mark those milestones. It’s definitely not the end, as a lot of people assume when bands release greatest hits albums.

30Music

You’re heading out on tour in support of the album – what’s your favourite thing about touring? Well we all travel in one big van, so it feels more like a girlie holiday than work, and the catering is always brilliant! We get a fair bit of downtime on tour to explore too and I always end up shopping far too much. We’re kicking off the tour in Glasgow this time, which we did on a tour five years ago too, and it’s always a good decision. There’s always great energy there that gets you pumped for the rest of the tour . Has it become more difficult to tour now there are quite a few baby Saturdays on board? I haven’t actually had to tour since having Aoife Belle and I won’t be taking her on this one, so it won’t be hugely different for me, except obviously I miss her when I’m away. Ben will be at home to look after her and she’s starting pre-school now, so she’ll have so much to tell me about her new friends when I get back.

@Scotcampus

We always know to expect good costumes on a Saturdays tour – can you share any of the outfits that are coming up? We had a tour meeting last week and the one thing we said we had to have was lots of outfit changes! We like to go all out with the visual effects as well; we just want it to feel like one big party for everyone who’s there. We know it must be difficult to choose, but what’s your favourite Saturdays song? I think it would have to be Up, which is such an oldie now, but I just loved it. The video was great too, with all of us in our different coloured tights, but I also love All Fired Up and our newest single, What Are You Waiting For? What Are You Waiting For? is a real party track, but do The Saturdays still party like they used to? Oh yeah, I mean now our nights out dancing tend to be to celebrate birthdays or achievements with the band, but the rest of the time we’ll still do barbecues and dinners. It’s just less often because of babies and whatnot, but we still enjoy going out together as much as ever.

www.scotcampus.com

What’s your proudest achievement as a Saturday? Our first number one last year, What About Us, which Sean Paul featured on. We’d worked so hard for it and come so close so many times, so we really wanted it, and it was just a great feeling for all of us. Not that we want to think about it, but when do you think you’ll stop being a Saturday? I hope I’ll always be a Saturday! We’re still doing what we love and I never want that to end. Even if we got to a point where the band did end though, I’d still be a Saturday – I think people think ‘The Sats’ is my last name, not Foden. It’s all because of our Twitter names! Post-Greatest Hits, when should we expect new material from the band? Well there are three new songs on the Greatest Hits album, and we’ll be in the studio working on the next album as soon as the Greatest Hits tour wraps up, which is so exciting. We never stop, but that’s the way I like it. The Saturdays’ Greatest Hits is out now. Catch them at Glasgow’s Clyde Auditorium on September 7th.

THE ST ENOCH SHOPPING CHALLENGE Freshers Week Special

W

ith Freshers Week fast approaching, we’re sure you’re all sitting there wondering that age-old question: what on earth shall I wear? We gave BFF bloggers and business partners Forever Yours Betty and Bee Waits For No One £100 to spend at St. Enoch, to create an outfit that will get them through Freshers Week, and this is how they got on...

Pink Floyd Tee £24.99, Pulp

Skirt £8, Warehouse @ Debenhams

Betty:

I think I’m right in assuming that every student has a great starting capsule wardrobe. This consists of jeans, a tee, your favourite flats and a party dress. I thought with my challenge I would fill in all the gaps in between! First stop was Dorothy Perkins. There was a sale on, but I completely fell in love with these nude, navy and white sandals. The three tones are very unusual and the heel is so comfy to take you from day to night if you are heading out after your last lecture. Wear with a skirt or smarten up a pair of jeans and token tee to make an outfit bar ready. I have loved the return of the drop waist skirt recently. It is a great way to achieve a flirty girly look without resorting back to your old favourite teenage skater skirt. I found this sweet pink tweedy version in Debenhams within the Warehouse concession for a complete STEAL at £8. Since the skirt was so girly, I wanted some toughness to add on the top, for both day and night. For lectures I decided to go for a classic band tee. I am a huge fan of Pink Floyd (and flying pigs), so when I saw this tee in Pulp, I knew it had to be the one for the lecture hall. For my nighttime look I ended up heading to the menswear section in Debenhams on the hunt for the perfect white

shirt. There is something so sexy about a man’s shirt on a woman, worn tucked into a flirty skirt or left loose over jeans. Wear it buttoned down and fling on a long necklace to add the extra ooh la la. With £14 left of the budget, I made my way to Boots to get the finishing touch to most - if not all – outfits: red lippy.

@Scotcampus

Bee:

I can’t be the only one here who’s blown their student loan on nights out, packets of crisps and fancy stationery? So what do you do? Find an outfit that works easily from day to night, but also as separates, so it can be easily integrated in to your own wardrobe. As a rule of thumb I always try to think of at least three other ways I could wear it before purchasing. My first purchase was a sale buy (sorry, not sorry) with a leather look laser cut pink pencil skirt from Dorothy Perkins. At £10 it was a total bargain and it easily sailed past the three ways to wear test.

White Floral Print Skater Skirt T-shirt £12.99, New Look £19.99, Pulp

Skirt £10, Dorothy Perkins

Following a mad dash to Debenhams, I found myself looking towards practical bits and bobs, that were going to eat heavily in to my budget. A chunky knit would be perfect for the morning after the night before, and it’s no secret I have the softest of spots for mixing textures. The piece de resistance though were some amazing pointy toes witchy boots - again Debenhams. At £45 that was nearly half my budget and wasn’t going to leave me with much pocket money left to spend. Thankfully the shopping Gods gave me a wee 20% off due to an in-store event. I went for a wee wild card for my top, ending up in Pulp. While not on my usual shopping route, I found myself fawning over everything from silky flamingo bombers, and cat face shoes. What I needed though was what turned out to be my T-shirt soulmate. Zombie hands and eyeballs and coming in at £19.99, it was great for adding a wee kitsch edge to my look. While it’s great layered under knits, for a night look I rolled up the sleeves, and chucked on a long necklace of my own. I spent £92.99, which leaves me enough pocket money to pick up a wee beauty bargain in Boots. Me? I’m heading straight for the eyeliner. I think I might just survive after all.

Top 10 High Street X Designer Collabs Of All Time

A

s we gear up for the launch of Alexander Wang’s H&M collection on November 6th, Scotcampus look back on our favourite high street meets high end collaborations since time began.

Versace for H&M (2011)

Lanvin for H&M (2010)

You know a collab is good when you’ll happily spend 14 hours on Buchanan Street in November queuing to get your hands on a piece (or five). Our editor-in-chief did just that for Donatella’s H&M line and was the first person in to shop Versace in all its studded glory. Well worth it.

H&M just rule this market, don’t they? Nothing could be prettier than Alber Elbaz’s layered tulle dresses for the ladies and dickie bows with pink shiny shoes for the boys.

Ashish x Topshop (2014)

Celebrities and we mere mortals alike loved Georgia’s beautiful prints and structured frocks, with Ellie Goulding and Ashley Roberts amongst those picking up a piece.

Ashish and Topshop have been working together for 10 years now, but they pulled it out of the bag in 2014, when Ashish replaced his signature sequins with neon brights and customisable T-shirts. Fresh to death. Jimmy Choo for H&M (2009) Another one our ed bought into in a big way – all those shiny heels at such low prices… It would have been rude not to. J.W. Anderson for Topshop (2012) Who didn’t want one of Jonathan Anderson’s bat-knit sweaters underneath their Christmas tree in 2012? Maison Martin Margiela x Converse (2013) The hottest kicks to be seen in at Fashion Week last September were undoubtedly paint-covered Converse All Stars, with Margiela taking red, yellow, black and blue versions, and masking them all under a heavy coating of white paint. The secret? When the paint cracks your true colour shines through. We’re still waiting for that magical day to occur.

36STYLE

Georgia Hardinge for River Island’s Design Forum (2013)

Kenzo x Vans (2013) Who didn’t want in on Kenzo’s cloud prints in 2013 and their bright leopard prints before that? A pair of slip-on Vans was the super stylish (and super affordable) way to do it. Anya Hindmarch x Sainsbury’s (2007) An IT bag that only cost a fiver? Yep, it happened, when Anya Hindmarch’s super limited edition ‘I’m Not A Plastic Bag’ totes hit Sainsbury’s stores across the country in 2007. Selling out instantly, there was then a waiting list for the second drop, dispatched from Hindmarch’s website. Peter Pilotto for Target (2014) While Target may be a US institution, here in the UK we had to shop this collection on Net-A-Porter, where it became their fastest selling collab of all time. No mean feat.

eptember 22nd 2014 marks 20 years since the first ever episode of Friends aired. From the moment runaway bride Rachel burst into Central Perk, holed herself up in Monica’s apartment and refused to leave, this legendary sitcom taught us valuable lessons about how to live with people who aren’t your family. 1. The One Where You All Meet

6. The One Where You All Pick Teams

An intertwining of the school acquaintances who became proper friends once they picked the same uni course and elected to live together, plus anyone else your halls have assigned you to live with. No matter what, you will be friends, at least until the end of Freshers Week. You’ve got nobody else. 2. The One With The Party Crasher

For the Friends, their team sport was football, but yours will probably be a drinking game. The person who is picked last will probably turn out to be the best.

The equivalent of Rachel arriving at Central Perk. They weren’t assigned to your flat, but they’ll stay for a night and never leave, and inevitably become part of the group. 3. The One Where Games Go Too Far Never bet your apartment in a game of poker. Unless yours is awful and the neighbours’ is better. 4. The One Where You Discover The Weird Neighbour They will provide a world of entertainment and procrastination, just as Ugly Naked Guy did for Rachel and Monica. 5. The One Where Your Friend Thinks They Can Sing One of your flatmates will probably audition for X Factor during your time together, or force you to watch them at an open mic night. They are your group Phoebe. Embrace their weirdness.

44LIFE

7. The One Where Your Friend Thinks They Can Act. And Speak French This is your group Joey. Best handled in the same way as your group Phoebe. Go and watch their awful plays, and hide the reviews the next day. 8. The One With The Hook-Up Nobody Expected Monica and Chandler. Makes sense now, but didn’t at the time, and the people most aware of that fact will be the couple themselves. This relationship will remain a secret, until one person tells another, they tell another and the whole group eventually know and are totally cool with it. 9. The One With The Hook-Up Everyone Expected Rachel and Joey. Two people so genetically blessed that they need at least one night of togetherness before realising, actually, they’re better off as friends. 10. The One With The Real Boyfriend Remember when Monica wanted to move Chandler in, but she had to ask Rachel to move out? And Rachel pretended she was cool with it, but really she wasn’t? Honesty is the best policy here, kids, unless you want to risk losing a friend AND a fun place to hang out.

Taught Us About Flatsharing

Looking for accomodation this year? Why not try Kelvingrove House, a brand new, luxurious, state-of-the-art student accommodation site run by the highly experienced management team DIGS. For more information on Kelvingrove House see Digkelvingrove.co.uk 11. The One Where You All Turn 21

16. The One Where Someone Steals Your Food

In Friends they all freaked out about turning 30. In the uni world, you’ll spend an entire year getting even more drunk than usual, because everyone is turning 21. You’ll also be really poor from all the parties and gifts. However, Friends taught us you should ALWAYS STICK TO THE LIST when it comes to said presents, and that life really won’t be all that different the next day.

And it’s never the rubbish stuff. It’s always the culinary Holy Grail, like Ross’ sandwich. Avoid the passive-aggressive Post-it notes and get a mini fridge in your room.

12. The One Where The Joey Special Becomes A Regular Occurrence Domino’s Two For Tuesdays were made for this. 13. The One Where You Hook Up With Your Mate’s Sister When friends and family collide, just try to make sure you remember WHICH sister you snogged on the dance floor, and send them a nice text the next day. 14. The One Where Someone Brings Home A Pet Probably totally against the flat rules, but chicks and ducks seem like fun, right? 15. The One Where Fake Tan Goes Too Far Guys and girls alike could learn a lesson from Ross’ “I’M AN EIGHT!” disaster.

www.scotcampus.com

17. The One Where You Phase Someone Out While we’d never have chosen to phase out Amanda in Friends – not with THOSE moves – there’s always some Freshers Week pals who just don’t make the cut by the end of the semester. 18. The One Where You Have To Pivot That giant beanbag you bought on a whim? Well you know exactly how to get it up the stairs. PIVOT, PIVOT! 19. The One Where They End Up Together Most mixed-gender friendship groups, classes or workplaces have a Ross and Rachel, and while they’ll spend the entire four years of uni flitting between hooking up and hating each other, they’ll inevitably end up together. For a little while, anyway. 20. The One Where Everyone Moves On Whether it’s because of the end of uni, the end of first year or – as the case may be – the end of a friendship, there will be that moment when you all sit your keys on the counter, and move on with your lives. It’s ok to shed a tear when this happens – Rachel did.

A Scottish Hostel For

EVERY OCCASION

S

cotland is a fairly sizeable place and, if you’ve got plans in somewhere other than your hometown, transport home from nights out can get pricey. Why not skip the taxi fare for once and grab a hostel for the night? No longer the super-basic backpacker destinations they used to be, many of them house onsite bars and offer private rooms, so it’s just like spending a night in a hotel – without the fancy price tag. Check out our suggestions for places to rest your head after some of Scotland’s biggest events…

If you’re going to Jocktoberfest, stay at… Inverness Student Hotel 8 Culduthel Road, Inverness, IV2 4AB Right next door to Inverness Castle lies Inverness Student Hotel, with gorgeous views of the River Ness, though if you’re visiting the city for Jocktoberfest that’s probably the last thing on your mind! Just a 17-minute drive from Black Isle Brewery – so Google Maps tells us – book in for two nights and enjoy the beer, bands and Bratwurst of Jocktoberfest. This year’s line-up includes Michael Cassidy, Dante, The Rogues and The Whiskys, while some very special one-off beers will be a brewing. As for the bratwurst, there’s even veggie versions, as well as Highland hog roasts, churros and pizza on the go. If that’s not something for everyone, we don’t know what is! Rate on September 5th & 6th 2014 at time of writing: £17 per night for a bed in a mixed dorm, with all other room types unavailable for at least one of the two nights. BOOK FAST! Invernessstudenthotel.com

If you’re going to the Ryder Cup Gala Concert, stay at… Glasgow Youth Hostel 8 Park Terrace, Glasgow, G3 6BY Kicking off the Ryder Cup in style, Chic featuring Nile Rodgers will play at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro, alongside Twin Atlantic, Jake Bugg, Nina Nesbitt, Texas, Amy McDonald, Eddi Reader and Midge Ure. To fully enjoy the festivities, checking in to Glasgow Youth Hostel would certainly be a great idea, given its close proximity to both the venue and the city centre. Located in Glasgow’s West End, near to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, there’s also plenty to do nearby outwith the concert. Managed to bag tickets to actually see the golf? Gleneagles is just 45 miles away and you’ll struggle to find this good a deal closer to the course. Rate on September 24th 2014 at time of writing: £22 for a bed in a shared room with towel hire included. Syha.org.uk

@Scotcampus

If you’re going to the Edinburgh Dungeons for Halloween, stay at… SMART CITY HOSTELS 50 Blackfriars Street, Edinburgh, EH1 1NE Located just off of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, Smart City Hostel is a five-star hostel, which is perfectly situated for the city’s famous Halloween spooktacular at the Edinburgh Dungeons. With bar and restaurant Bar 50 inside, it’s a sociable place to stay, with open mic nights and pub quizzes should you decide to visit for more than one evening. The menu includes tasty favourites like burgers and fish and chips, and the cocktails are positively mouth-watering. Over at The Edinburgh Dungeons, there’s a brand new Halloween show, with the opportunity to join in with the Dinner for the Dead – just make sure you book in advance, as it will sell out! Rate on October 31st 2014 at time of writing: £18 for a bed in a 10-bed shared dorm, £20 for a bed in an 8 or 6-bed shared dorm or £22 for a bed in a 4-bed shared dorm. Bed and breakfast options also available for any killer hangovers – geddit? Smartcityhostels.com

If you’re going to MTV EMA 2014, stay at… Euro Hostel Glasgow 318 Clyde Street, Glasgow, G1 4NR While MTV are yet to announce the acts performing, presenting and attending this year’s Europe Music Awards at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro, you can bet they’re going to be good. Previous years have seen the likes of Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga hitting the stage, so you’ll want to be staying in the city for the night, to avoid having to leave in time for the last train. Euro Hostel is handily located just two minutes walk from Glasgow Central Station, so you won’t have far to walk on arrival or departure, and it’s an easy walk along the river to the Hydro – or quick (and cheap) taxi ride. Onsite bar Mint & Lime is the perfect place to have a few drinks before the big occasion, while Sub Club and The Arches are right across the road, in case you don’t want the party to end when the stars leave the stage. Book ASAP for the cheapest rates and ensure you’ve got plenty of cash left over to spend on your red carpet outfit – because you never know who might be walking it with you. Rate on November 9th 2014 at time of writing: £10 for a bed in a large female or male dorm, £20 for a single private room and £24 for a twin private room. Bargain or what? Euro-hostels.co.uk/Glasgow

ROAD TRIPPING S

THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS:

A Guide By John Darley

travaig - Verb, Scottish Slang: to wander freely.

“Fancy stravaiging next week, John?” I was asked this question by my friend's wife, Claire. “Aye,” says my friend John. “Claire and I were talking about it the other week. Fancy it?” The word immediately caught my attention. I'm usually up-to-date with my Scottish slang; I feel it

Travel Our destination was the small fishing town Ullapool. But how exactly were we going to get there? There's the standard routine of jumping on a train to Inverness, getting a bus and then walking the distance. Hey, if the West Highland Way kids can do it, why can't we? However, it wouldn't be ideal for Hank the dog, and with the unreliable Scottish weather we decided to look in a different direction. Our first choice was to rent a 1969 VW Campervan. We agreed that being one of the touchstones within camping transportation it would make the trip that bit more special, while also being an attempt to try and be trendy amongst other caravan users. If you're

50LIFE

reaffirms my place within Scotland. But it meant nothing to me. I pretended to know what they were talking about. In short, the three of us were going to travel the Highlands. Before you decide to embark on your own personal journeys, you might want to take the following into consideration:

planning on going down that retro charm route, always try and book in advance. We thought a week would do, but everything was either booked up or we didn't have enough time to file the insurance paperwork - they're precious antiques you know! So we decided to go for the next best thing, a 1997 Toyota Granvia from a company called Big Tree Campers. Retro? You could say that. Trendy? It's debatable. Travelling by car is perhaps the best option if you want to see Scotland's vast landscapes. The price to rent out our van for a weekend was very reasonable. For four days, it cost us just under £500. If you consider splitting that with your group, it's great value, especially when compared to other companies.

@Scotcampus

Food Food is a big thing between John, Claire and I. As much as we love to have a mountainous plate of something all to ourselves, the best part about eating is that it's a shared experience. Food shouldn't be shackled to only one plate; forks need to be going from one plate to another. It shouldn't be an anti-social act. Simple ingredients can also make a meal easily stand out while camping. For us, our top five things to take would be: •

Garlic

Hot sauce

Lemons

Oil

A bunch of herbs

These were our five staples for cooking. If we were feeling peckish, all we had to do was make a bit of toast and rub in half a garlic clove, and we instantly had garlic bread. When making seafood, you can make a simple lemon butter or throw some garlic, herbs and mayo for a simple aioli. All these quick and easy things will stand out from the mundane and bland tinned food that most campers abide by.

Culture Apart from Ullapool's fishing industry, it also has a reputation for its overspill of culture and arts. Many of the pubs across the town have live music, weekly ceilidhs and theatre. Better still, a lot of them are dog friendly. Recently, the town played host for Yestival, the month-long grassroots festival of theatre, music, poetry and spoken-word that took place across Scotland in July. They also have their music festival, Loopallu, at the end of September, which is said to be the friendliest and most fun festival across the UK. Previous guest have included Jake Bugg, Franz Ferdinand and Admiral Fallow. It's a unique and low-key affair, where it's not uncommon for some of the acts to spill into the pub after their set. Coming back into Glasgow's city centre you immediately feel

That determination to get our hands on fresh food shone through John the most, to the point where we found ourselves fishing in the middle of the night, since all the seafood restaurants were closed. You don't need to go to that extreme to get fresh seafood. After the three of us accepting our failure at not catching anything, all we had to do was just chat to some of the local fishermen strewn across Ullapool's pubs and they were able to sort us without any hesitation.

52LIFE

a change of rhythm and that peaceful atmosphere is no more; it's why we have such a love for the place as well. But with our bellies stretched and our minds broadened with the possibilities of where we could end up next in Scotland, it proves to us that this nation is more than just our home, it's an adventure that's filled with history and great discoveries.

KEEPING YOUR OPTIONS OPEN Interview: Scotland Rugby Player Henry Pyrgos

F

rom school rugby star to balancing Business Studies with a professional career, Henry Pyrgos should give lessons in the art of multi-tasking. Playing for both Glasgow Warriors and the Scottish national team, we caught up with Henry during a rare moment of free time, to hear just how he manages to have it all.

How did you get into rugby in the first place? Well I started playing when I was about seven, at school, and I liked it. I liked my rugby coach as well, so I kept going with it, and then when I was about ten I joined my local club. My parents are both quite big on sport, they play a lot and my sister plays, so we were always a sporty family. I played other sports too when I was younger, but had quite a few friends who played rugby, so it was most enjoyable. Talk us through the process of going professional… I guess I always had it in the back of my mind that it was something I wanted to do. I went on to Loughborough to study after school and thought it was a good place to try and do both things, and ended up playing for Scotland under 20s when I was at Loughborough, which was amazing. Then I got offered a contract at Glasgow, so at the time it was a hard decision between rugby and studies, but in the end I chose rugby. I think it was a good decision. You’re doing an Open University degree now; is it the same course or something slightly different? At Loughborough I was doing Chemistry, which was full on with a lot of hours, and I found it hard to manage my time. I’m doing a business with environment course at Open Uni, so it’s a lot more flexible with the hours, with a lot more work from home and less contact time. It makes it much easier to work around rugby. How long will it take to get your degree with the Open University? It’s six years and I’ve done two already, so hopefully another four, because it’s basically double the length of time of a normal degree. Is that your way of planning ahead for after your rugby career? I’m definitely looking forward and planning for later life, but at the moment I’m not really sure what I want to do, it’s just good to be working towards a degree. It is always good to keep your options open. What’s been the highlight of your rugby career so far? Probably getting my first cap for Scotland against New Zealand, which was a great experience. And finally what do you have coming up for the rest of the year? Well with Glasgow I’m looking forward to the start of the season; I think we’re playing the Harlequins next weekend. Then London away the week after, so it’s going to be a busy few weeks, but I really can’t wait to get back on the pitch.

Spotlight on…

Nathan Ferguson • Photography @ City of Glasgow College

Tell us about your course and which aspect you enjoy the most? I just finished the first year of my HND. I enjoyed the graded unit at the end of the year, as the brief was completely up to me. I decided to go ahead with a street portraiture project, after being stuck between a homeless project and street portraiture. Soon after deciding to go with a street portraiture project I was commissioned to shoot for a homeless charity and the images are now part of an exhibition “Roofless At Referral” which opens in October in Edinburgh’s Sumerhall. Where do you get your inspiration from? I get my inspiration from being in the city centre too much and with the type of course I am on you have the odd time where you just sit and watch the city life. I get inspired by people that walk past me in the street. But away from street images, I love working with light and I am going to be in the studio more in weeks to come. For studio images, the concepts in the likes of Hope St Magazine inspire me, some simple and some complex work in one extremely cleanly presented magazine. Also the likes of Rankin and Peter Hurley inspire me, in how they capture the personality of their subject, whether it’s an actor, comedian or the Queen.

56LIFE

What images are you most proud of to date? The full project for the Edinburgh homeless charity. I have a new found respect for people who are or have been homeless. Within the project I wanted to show the environment and also the character of the subject. My personal favourite image from that project was a portrait of a man in his room within the homeless housing. He had in his hands, and had been reading, athlete Michael Johnson’s Slaying the Dragon. I captured him looking up with hope in his eyes. Where in the world would you most like to travel to do photography and why? Well I’m not finished with Glasgow yet; I have a lot of doors to chap on. Not to sound stereotypical but New York would be the dream. The streets, the people, the style and the food! The one thing that makes me want to stay and work in Glasgow as long as possible though is the creative networking, everyone creative knows everyone and it’s a big family in a way. If you don’t know a certain person no doubt they’re a friend of a friend.

@Scotcampus

Can you remember the first ever photograph you took? Everyone was a CSI geek at one time or another when they were younger. Well I aspired to be a forensics officer and then one year I got a point and shoot camera and a tripod. I must have been about 7 or 8 and I would get my friend to get chalked round and then photograph the scene. That’s the earliest photograph I remember, but I also had a Pepsi can that flipped up in the middle with a viewfinder and took 35mm film; I must have used it when I was about 4 or 5. After many years I studied photography in my 6th year at high school and saved up and got my first DSLR.

Fresh

SEX A

h, your first week uni/college. Perhaps your first week as an independent adult? Freshers Week for most is that first opportunity to let off some steam away from the confines of a family environment. This means it may well involve a lot of partying, late nights/early mornings, and of course, meeting a brand new range of friends and acquaintances. And realistically, you’re going to meet a lot of members of the opposite sex. Finally the restrictions of high school social politics and a limited selection of options are gone, no longer diminishing your chances of finally getting some sexual action. Always consider if you really want sex or if you feel that you should as everyone else is, as that is not case,

58LIFE

although you would think so from magazines, TV, films and music. Now, no one is saying you shouldn’t have sex, but you really don’t want to become one of those UK statistics, so take an easy measure to prevent the transfer of STI, HIV or becoming pregnant by using a condom. Having unprotected sex (not using a condom) is like playing Russian Roulette, you never know the outcome until it is too late. So be smart and well prepared; get in your supplies of Free Condoms from over 200 venues detailed at The Free Condoms website at freecondomsglasgowandclyde. org/find-a-venue. aspx

CLUBS & NIGHTLIFE EXODUS

AURUM

Schoolhill, Aberdeen, AB10 1JT

One Diamond Street, Aberdeen, AB10 1QX

Upstairs from Triplekirks lies Exodus, a club so conveniently located that you may struggle to go out for a ‘quiet drink’, without rolling in at 3am. Open seven nights a week, with a different theme every night, it’s literally a one-stop shop. From ’80s night to indie rock, dance and drink £2 Jagerbombs until your heart’s content. THE UNDERGROUND KLUB 10 Bridge Street, Aberdeen, AB11 6JL Underground may be small, but it’s fast becoming mighty on the Aberdeen club scene, playing host to Propaganda, Saturday night’s House Party and live music on Crash! Great news for any of you moving from Glasgow to Aberdeen this semester: The Garage has set up shop in the city too! Having already won the Best Bar None award for Best Nightclub in 2014, we’re particular fans of Warehouse Wednesdays, thanks to DJ James Campbell’s chart and electro anthems. We’re also fans of the Build Your Own Cocktail menu. Make ours a Passoa, Pineapple Sourz and cola, please. £3 you say? We’ll take two.

Refurbished in 2012, The Institute offers three rooms over two floors, and is open three nights a week. Skite Wednesdays are the home of the £1 VK, giving that noughties house party vibe to your midweek clubbing experience, while Vanity Fridays are perhaps classier affairs with £1.50 Smirnoff Black and mixer. Sugar Saturdays are when The Institute really comes alive, with house and chart tunes in one room, and R&B and hip hop in another.

CARMINE’S PIZZA & PASTA 32 Union Terrace, Aberdeen, AB10 1NN Recommended by @Glasgowfoodie: “This place is legendary. Cash only here and do book as it is small and, as goes with its legend status, fills up quickly. Go not only for the food but the experience.” With no website or social media presence to speak of, Carmine’s is an authentic little Italian, loved by locals. Perfect for a quick lunch, you’ll leave with a full belly, and change from a tenner.

SHOPPING TRINITY CENTRE

BON ACCORD & ST. NICHOLAS

155 Union Street, Aberdeen, AB11 6BE

25 George Street, Aberdeen, AB25 1HZ There are over 65 shops in the Bon Accord & St. Nicholas centre; so many that we can almost forgive them for having an absolute mouthful of a name. From Build-aBear to Burton, Topshop and even a Post Office, literally all your needs are taken care of here. There’s a Sainsbury’s too, but our favourite food-based store has to be ice cream parlour, Scoopy Doo…

The Trinity is relatively small by comparison to its neighbours, but it still houses some of life’s essential shops, like Argos (for bargain storage solutions and gym gear), Primark (for cheap everything), Superdrug (for lowpriced cosmetics and toiletries) and Schuh (for when all the money you’ve saved budgeting calls for a treat). Additional stores to note include Debenhams, Claire’s, HMV, Waterstones, JD and Greggs.

Aberdeen’s one-stop shopping centre houses a Cineworld cinema, 27 eateries for all occasions, and essential shops such as Boots, H&M, Hollister and MAC Cosmetics. There’s also an onsite Jury’s Inn, should any visitors need a place to stay, and Saks Hair are always on hand to give you a restyle. Unionsquareaberdeen.com

MERCHANT QUARTER

THE ACADEMY

If the high street isn’t for you, venture into Merchant Quarter, where you’ll find some cool independent stores. R&B Music is an instrument shop catering for all genres, not just the Beyoncés of the world. Gamola Golf has everything the budding Rory McIlroy could ever need, while Granite Reef is a haven for those more interested in the surf, snow and skate scene. Finally, Hanon is where the city’s sneakerheads hang out, buying up rare Jordans in their droves.

This converted Victorian school building houses an eclectic mix of shops, bars and restaurants, with British fashion giant Jack Wills sidling up to musical instrument shop ii Music, while Attic stocks cool girls and guys brands including adidas Originals, Farah Vintage, and Stussy. Concept is another haven of brands; Fred Perry, Pretty Green and Selected Homme should be enough to keep any stylish young gentleman happy

THE SPEEDWELL BAR (MENNIES) 165-167 Perth Road, Dundee, DD2 1AS

CLARKS 80 North Lindsay Street, Dundee, DD1 1PS

Recommended by @glasgowfoodie: “The Speedwell Bar was built in 1903 and was referred to by generations of locals as ‘Mennies’ after the landlady who ran the place for over half a century.” With eight lagers on draught and a selection of bottled beers and ciders, Mennies is a great local-feeling bar, with multiscreens for all the big sporting events.

Marketing themselves as ‘the contemporary bar with traditional values’, we couldn’t think of a better way to describe Clarks, with its old-but-new hipster interior contrasting with the local vibe. In a good way, obvs, or we wouldn’t be recommending it. Monday night is quiz night, Fridays and Saturdays are for late night live music, and Sunday afternoons offer a lunchtime jazz session. NON-ZERO’S

2 West Port, Dundee, DD1 5EP

140 Perth Road, Dundee, DD1 4JW

Recommended by @glasgowfoodie: “The West House is a small but well designed - space that transforms itself from laid back coffee house to a lively pre-club DJ bar.” Day or night this is a brilliant place to hang out, with sit-in coffee priced at £1 till noon, and open mic nights every Sunday from 8pm. That’s what we like in our drinking slash hangover dens.

Handily located near Duncan of Jordanstone Art School, Art Bar is both low-key and loved, with a great atmosphere amongst the regulars. There’s an outdoor area for sunny evenings, but inside is cosy and dimly lit, perfect for hiding out on winter nights. Resident DJs and gigs keep Art Bar lively, but even on a non-event night you can’t go wrong.

This live music venue plays host to many an unsigned act, from afternoon blues sessions to punk matinees, to full-on evening gigs. Popular with students and locals alike, they also play host to Rock The Tay festival, which this year saw Vukovi, Carson Wells and many more rocking out.

JESSIE’S KITCHEN 3 Albert Road, Broughty Ferry, Dundee, DD5 1AY

21-23 Old Hawhill, Dundee, DD1 5EU Recommended by @Glasgowfoodie: “The D’Arcy Thompson Pub & Dining Room takes its name from the University of Dundee’s first Professor of Biology, D’Arcy Thompson, and it houses the collection of specimens he collected from all over the world. You will see this reflected in the décor, but thankfully the bugs are big enough to know they aren’t real!” Great style, a tasty, regularly updated menu of modern classics and some delicious cocktails.

Not to be confused with Blue Marlin beach club in Ibiza (though their seafood is on a par), this waterfront eatery has just been awarded the OpenTable Diners’ Choice of 2014, so you know it’s going to be good. Blue cheese? Bacon glaze? Count us in.

Legend has it there’s a ghost or two that haunt the halls, but we’re still not convinced, considering the copious amounts of alcohol consumed during an average visit. The Bongo Club moved under the Central Library in Cowgate last year, but still remains the same amazing club, gig venue and artistic platform for all. Having just opened a second shop in London, Ruffians Barbers is thee place to go for an expert haircut, washed down with a dram. DRYGATE

85 Drygate, Glasgow, G4 0UT

Gig venues don’t come much more beautiful than Oran Mor, the former Kelvinside Parish Church, which plays host to live music, comedy, theatre and club nights. With a dedicated whisky bar it’s a great place to grab a dram, with over 280 malts, while the Brasserie Late Night Bar does some brilliant cocktails. Any far-flung visitors you have will love the Velvet Kilt – a heady combo of MacAllan Gold and Teichenné Butterscotch Schnapps. Oran-mor.co.uk

This much-loved vegan café, bar and restaurant never fails to disappoint its loyal army of customers. Monthly takeovers by Synergy Concerts sees gigs from the likes of This Will Destroy You and Strand Of Oaks on the programme, while everyone knows no vegan dinner would be complete without an organic craft beer, of which Mono serves many. They might even let you in without a beard if you’re lucky.

Recommended by @Glasgowfoodie: “Craft beer bar and brewery run by Williams Bros. Brewing Co. in association with Tennent’s. Food provided by The Vintage of Leith. Excellent food, superb selection of drink.” The UK’s first experiential craft brewery houses the Vintage Craft Beer Bar & Kitchen, with 24 rotating taps and 200 bottles, while upstairs there’s an informal Beerhall and Terrace. THE SSE HYDRO

THE ART SCHOOL

Exhibition Way, Glasgow, G3 8YW

20 Scott Street, Glasgow, G3 6PE

After its grand opening this time last year, the Hydro has continued to attract the biggest names in music to Glasgow, from Miley Cyrus to Beyoncé. Having played host to Princes William and Harry, and K-Middy, during the Commonwealth Games, we’d say it’s definitely had the royal seal of approval. Upcoming events include Enrique Iglesias (swoon), Kasabian, Paolo Nutini and Jack White

Despite the blaze in the Mackintosh building earlier this year, the student union is still going strong, with new club night Zone and upcoming gigs from The Neighbourhood, The Amazing Snakeheads and Tycho. The Vic Bar & Café is also worth a visit for a quieter drink and a reasonably priced feed

It’s not unusual to find bands hanging here after a set either in Sleazys or at the nearby O2 ABC. Equally, there’s always a chance you’ll bump into Scarlett Johannson filming a movie, despite the unremarkable front of this debaucherous bar. From open mic evenings to The Incredibly Strange Film Night, there’s always something going on, with plenty of booze to wash it all down.

KING TUT’S WAH WAH HUT 272a St Vincent Street, Glasgow, G2 5RL Despite being steeped in history (it’s the place where Alan McGee signed Oasis in 1993), King Tut’s could easily be missed by the uneducated passer-by, who fails to notice its famous red sign at basement level. Attracting both signed and unsigned acts, this autumn sees next big things Indiana and Kyla La Grange taking to the stage, as well as old favourites The Subways. The bar downstairs offers bottled beers from £2 and some sweet 2 for £12 dinners. Kingtuts.co.uk

720 Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow, G41 2AD

Launched in 2013, The Howlin’ Wolf is – by their own admission – “a bar, kitchen and venue for lovers of blues, soul, homemade food, rock ‘n’ roll, cocktails and tall tales.” The winner of Dram Magazine’s Best New Bar 2014, it’s well worth a visit, for regular live music and cocktails at just £5.95. Make ours a Big Bill Broonzy.

Recommended by @Glasgowfoodie: “Great range of bottled beers in this locals’ pub. It doesn’t look or feel like the usual beer pub, so thumbs up!” On further investigation Scotcampus found The Allison Arms’ has one of the largest selections of bottled German beers on the Southside. Get in. It’s also conveniently located across the road from Buddy’s BBQ & Burgers…

The current gin renaissance has seen the opening of Glasgow’s first bar dedicated to the previously overlooked spirit. Housed within Cup Tea Lounge across from the old Odeon cinema on Renfield Street, the gin comes out at 6pm when the cakes go away – sounds complicated, but trust us, it’s not. Try the classic Aviation cocktail and you’ll never look back.

We like new places here at Scotcampus and they don’t come much fresher than Ox And Finch. Handy for those of you frequenting Caledonian Uni this year, they’re serving up a great variety of meats, seafood and veggies, and we reckon it’d be a great place to take a date. If the dark chocolate brownie and strawberry milkshake dessert combo doesn’t have them eating off of your plate we don’t know what will. Oxandfinch.com

The first time we visited Crabshakk it was essentially to see if SpongeBob SquarePants was there serving up Crabby Patties. He wasn’t, but what we did find was some damn good seafood, from classic fish and chips with tartar sauce to squid tempura, crab cakes, lobster and langoustines. Steak and chips and seasonal risotto are also available if you’re a mermaid who doesn’t want to eat their friends.

With La Boca’s authentic Tapas and Spanish-style tiles you’ll feel like you’re on your holibags. It’s great for those of you living on a student income as you can enjoy fancy cuisine without the fancy price tag. We’d recommend the paella but if you prefer food without a face, there’s also plenty of meat and veggie dishes.

CELEBRATING LIFE, EVERY DAY, EVERYWHERE

A

s a global company with products sold in more than 180 countries around the world, there is a lot we could tell you about what it’s like to work for Diageo. However, we believe it is our people, who grow our business and nurture our brands, who are best placed to tell you their experience. So as we start to plan which talent we are looking to attract for our September 2015 graduate intake, we took some time to speak to those already on our International Supply Centre graduate programme about why they joined Diageo and most importantly what makes them stay:

Amy Millen What have you been working on at Diageo? I’ve spent my first rotation in our International Supply Technical Centre in Menstrie working in Brand Change as a Supply Project Manager which involves coordinating and leading innovation and renovation projects across our global brands as part of the white spirits and North America team. Come September I will be moving to Dublin and working in St James’s Gate which is the Guinness Brewery as part of their Continuous Improvement team. What attracted you to Diageo?

EMPLOYMEMNT

It’s probably the fact that we get to take on real roles and deliver real value for the company. We are given a lot of breadth not just focusing on what we think might be our expertise when we start with the company. You are encouraged to grow your capabilities in a variety of roles.

KIRSTY HENDERSON What did you want to do when you left university? On leaving uni I really didn’t know what I wanted to do but I knew I wanted to find a grad scheme that over a 2 to 3 year period would let me experience different roles to find out where I could best sit within a business and for me Diageo ticked that box. I’m really looking forward to my next rotation within Shieldhall packaging plant and the opportunities and challenges that that’s going to bring but most importantly I’m so glad that I picked Diageo. What did you want to do when you left university? As well as their top world renowned brands what was so encouraging was the values they expected from each of their employees such as passionate about our customers and consumers, freedom to succeed, be the best, proud of what we do, value each other. What is so refreshing is that I can see these values lived out every day and it’s not just words on a website. I think that speaks a great deal about a company.

100EMPLOYMENT

@Scotcampus

WILL FLYNN Why Diageo? I first joined Diageo when I was 18, taking on a warehouse operator role over the summer at the Old Bushmills Distillery. Four years later I returned for an industrial placement as part of my MEng degree at the University of Edinburgh and then applied for the Diageo Supply Graduate scheme. What have you been doing since you joined Diageo? Since joining Diageo I’ve been working as a Project Engineer within Malt Distilling. One of the projects I’ve been working on is one of the biggest projects in Diageo Scotland Supply at the moment which is the expansion of Teaninich Distillery. This is a very high profile project and I’ve been given some real responsibility on it. I think this is quite a rare opportunity for a graduate, especially someone who is just out of university. The scale of this project has been quite scary, but I’m really enjoying working through it at the moment.

LLOYD BOOTHROYD What was it like applying for the Diageo Supply graduate programme? The assessment day was much more laid back and relaxed than other days I’d been involved with. Huge importance seemed to be placed on getting to know you as individual rather than getting you in to a room and just passing a test. They wanted to make sure everyone was the right fit for the company. As you come to the end of your time on the graduate programme what roles have you done? In year 1 I did a Procurement role. In my second year I worked in Supply Chain and was able to extend this rotation for 6 months which shows the flexibility of the graduate scheme when there is a business need and it fits in with the aspirations of the graduate at the time. For my 3rd year I’ve been working in a Luxury Project Manager role.

Our graduates inspire our Diageo leadership teams to create great experiences for them each year by delivering on their investment with outstanding business results. They are passionate individuals who act like owners every day. If you think you could be the next leader of our business then we want to hear from you. Applications for our September 2015 intake will open via our website (www.diageocareers.com) in September 2014 and close end of October 2014. We will also keep graduates updated on our application process and what we are up to via our Diageo Graduates Europe facebook page. If you want to hear more from our graduates then please visit the Scotcampus website at www.scotcampus.com where you can listen to 3 more Diageo employees talking about their experiences. And if you think we might be the right company for you after everything you’ve heard we look forward to your application so we can talk to you about your story and the legacy you want to create.

How I Bagged My DREAM JOB Interview: Charlotte Butler, Art Editor, MTV International

F

rom intern to art editor in just a few (long, hard) months, 25-yearold Charlotte Butler has climbed the creative ranks quickly, as part of MTV’s international features team. Currently gearing up for her second Europe Music Awards with the company – this year taking place in Glasgow – the Cornwall native took time out of her busy schedule to share her career path with Scotcampus. Prepare to be inspired, and to experience more than a little job envy… What did you study at uni and why? I did an Art Foundation at Central Saint Martins, which I applied to on a whim with only a small photography portfolio, and got in. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my academic A Levels - English, History and French - so originally it was meant to be some kind of creative gap year. Then I ended up applying for a degree in Graphic and Media Design at London College of Communication.

EMPLOYMEMNT

Do you think it was directly beneficial to what you're doing now or could you have done without the degree? It was 100% beneficial for me, because I wouldn’t have figured out what I really wanted to do in life without it, and I met a ton of really great and inspiring people along the way! It sounds really cheesy, but it’s true.

What does your role involve on a day-to-day basis? My main responsibility is to manage the look and feel of MTV.co.uk, in particular the Style hub, though I also work across Music, Movies, Shows and anything else we might be producing on any given day. I create fun, poppy images, graphics and GIFs to accompany the editorial team’s features, and to promote digital MTV content. I also produce and art direct fashion shoots and artist portraits, which is my favourite part of the job, as you get to work with some really interesting people. What would you say to anyone considering a similar role? Work hard, have fun and never turn down an opportunity. If you have a goal, go and get it. What's been your career highlight so far?

How did you get your job at MTV?

Going to the European Music Awards in Amsterdam last year. I was working my ass off all weekend, but it was such an amazing experience and opportunity to be able to work on it. My name was even featured on the credits! My mum definitely recorded that one on the TV. I can’t wait to do it all over again in Glasgow this year.

I started off as an intern, and when my immediate boss left I worked really, really hard, and showed my big boss I could do the job too. It took a while and it definitely wasn’t easy, but I eventually got promoted to the position I’m in now – art editor, my dream job.

The MTV Europe Music Awards take place at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro on November 9th. For more information on careers with MTV visit MTV.co.uk/ jobs

What was your first job when you finished uni? Shop assistant at Urban Outfitters, naturally, like every other art grad under the sun. My first creative job after uni was for Y’OH Streetwear, where I did graphic design on a freelance basis.

BOOST YOUR EMPLOYABILITY WITH ALLIANCE FRANCAISE

By Amy Johnston

EMPLOYMEMNT

After studying Higher German, my French communication skills stretch to reciting the ‘I can sing a Rainbow’ song. A quick chat with Nathalie Korkmaz, Director of Alliance Française de Glasgow, is enough to kick-start any student’s motivation to pick up a new language. “It is definitely something that employers will look at if two candidates have the same skills and diplomas,” said Nathalie. “An employer will recognise that it takes courage and self-confidence to speak to someone in a foreign language.” Nathalie smiled encouragingly as she asked these four questions to determine the level that I required for classes. Pro Tip: Initially responding in German will take you to Beginner status. These questions are fundamental when it comes to introducing yourself in French. Once you know how to say your name, where you live, your nationality and your profession, networking becomes much easier. “At the Alliance we really focus on communication for everyday life,” said Nathalie.

104EMPLOYMENT

“You’re not only learning grammar for the sake of it like you do at school- it’s really about being able to answer questions when you encounter other people.” The process of learning a new language works as an asset by demonstrating both motivation and dedication. “It can open so many doors and can broaden your experience- you’ll be able to do work experience anywhere!” Nathalie suggests. “You will be a top candidate for any employer if you add a foreign language onto your skills.” With no definite pattern for the length of learning process, Nathalie recommends 70-100 hours for beginners to become intermediate. “The best tip would be experiencing the country of the language as the difference to learning is amazing, ” she adds. Nathalie and her team at the AF Glasgow are dedicated to sharing their passion for the language, culture, and French way of life. The AF language centre is based in a cosy and bright location at 3 Park Circus in Glasgow, and offers both French courses and a space for examinations to boost your CV. Whether you are brushing up on skills from school, or wish to gain confidence in the basics, AF Glasgow caters to all ages.

Well, for starters, there’s the chance to join a large, market-leading company which can offer you rocksolid job security and a range of career options once you’re through the door. Then there’s the training. As a Trainee Smart Energy Expert, you’ll be enrolled in one of the company’s award-winning training Academies where you’ll learn everything you need to know about smart metering and customer service. The best bit is you’ll be earning while you’re learning. Starting salaries are £13,750 and, when you’re fully qualified, you’ll get £20,600. When you add into the mix your own fully fitted van, very latest hand-held technology, mobile and benefits, such as pension and share save schemes, shopping and mobile phone discounts, it all looks like a very tempting proposition. What will I be doing? If you’re a real people person who’s got a handle on technology, these roles are tailor made for you. Once you’ve trained to become an expert, you’ll go out into customers’ homes to install smart meter technology, pass on your expertise and educate customers about their energy usage. This could involve anything from

replacing or repairing meters to diagnosing faults and resolving installation issues. We think it’s a great job – but don’t just take our word for it. Sam Wood’s already been through the training. Here’s what he’s got to say about it. Why did you sign up to be a Trainee Smart Energy Expert? Working with my hands is what I’m good at. My job means I get to do all the stuff I loved at school; practical subjects like woodwork, resistant materials and science. I’d already finished a plumbing course at college but I was keen to learn more and British Gas gave me just that opportunity. What’s the best part of your job? Variety – without a doubt. Every customer is different. The freedom to manage my own time and tea and having your own van and tools aren’t bad either. 5 Have To Watch NOW Student Films You

For those days when you have nowhere to be, nobody to see and not the faintest urge to get off of the couch…

The Graduate (1967) The classic adaptation of Charles Webb’s 1963 novel sees a young Dustin Hoffman being seduced by Mrs Robinson, one of the most famous cougars in history, not to mention the subject of her own Simon & Garfunkel song. The Graduate also spawned 2005 Jennifer Aniston movie Rumour Has It… While the plot of the latter is a little far-fetched, we’d recommend a back-to-back viewing session, mostly because Shirley MacLaine is comedic genius. Legally Blonde (2001) While there is a sequel to Legally Blonde, that backto-back viewing thing really doesn’t apply here, because it’ll only ruin all the amazing-ness of the first movie. Before Reese Witherspoon was getting arrested for disorderly conduct, not to mention that time she drunkenly failed to pronounce Cara Delevingne’s name correctly, she was Elle Woods. The pink-wearing, Chihuahua-totting sorority girl wasn’t anyone’s idea of a Harvard Law Student, but she followed her douchebag boyfriend there anyway, and ended up being really rather good. A feminist fairytale if ever we saw one.

www.scotcampus.com

The Roommate (2011) If you’re still having Gossip Girl withdrawal symptoms, pull up The Roommate on Netflix, and prepare to see Leighton Meester as you’ve never seen her before. Yeah, we know Blair Waldorf was a bit of a psycho, but did she ever invade another girl’s shower and rip out her belly ring? We think not. Maybe don’t watch this one with your new flatmates… They might get ideas… The House Bunny (2008) Some call it a poor man’s Legally Blonde; we call The House Bunny Anna Faris at her finest. Supported by a cast of misfits, including Emma Stone and Rumer Willis, Anna plays a former Playboy bunny who gets thrown out of Hugh Hefner’s mansion for being too old. Obviously the next best thing to the Playboy Mansion is a sorority, so Anna signs up to be a housemother to the oddest girls on campus, and teaches them how to do all the important things in life. Like date. And dress well. National Lampoon’s Van Wilder (2002) Any film with Ryan Reynolds playing the lead is a must-watch, right? Guys, Tara Reid and Sophia Bush also star, so don’t think we’re leaving you out of hottie watch. Van Wilder is the eternal college party boy, having spent seven years there, without the slightest attempt to graduate. Then disaster strikes: his dad stops paying his tuition fees. Chaos ensues. You get the picture – now go watch it.

WHEN CELEBRITIES & VIDEO GAMES

COLLIDE

O

n the list of 101 Things Kim Kardashian Has Done This Year, marrying Kanye West isn’t the weirdest; that accolade goes to her being immortalised in her own video game, Kim Kardashian Hollywood. The highly addictive app, downloadable free from the App Store and Google Play, allows the player to create their own character and work to become a celebrity in Hollywood – with a little help from cartoon Kim, of course. However, Kim isn’t the first star to appear in a video game... 50 Cent

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen

Fiddy’s foray into gaming came in 50 Cent: Bulletproof. Designed for PS2 and Xbox, the game was released to the Christmas market in 2005, and allows the player to actually become Curtis. Dr Dre, Eminem and DJ Whoo Kid also appear, and a follow-up, 50 Cent: Blood On The Sand, was released in February 2009. Both involve guns. Kim K’s game just involves clothes.

Before they were super-cool fashion designers, the

Cara Delevingne Appearing in Grand Theft Auto V, Cara became a DJ for the role, adding yet another string to her already well-waxed bow. Released in September 2013, the game was critically acclaimed, and generated more than $800 million in worldwide revenue within 24 hours of release. We’re not sure that had anything to do with Cara, but no doubt Queen D cashed in all the same. Michael Jackson Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker was an old school Sega game based around MJ’s film of the same name. With the music superstar rescuing children from the evil Mr Big, there were plenty of his songs on the soundtrack, including Bad, Beat It and Smooth Criminal.

112BACKSIDE

Olsen Empire of movies, clothes, fragrances and books also stretched to video games, including The New Adventures Of Mary-Kate & Ashley for Game Boy Colour and – our personal favourite - Mary-Kate & Ashley’s Magical Mystery Mall for PlayStation. A preteen dream, the game allowed players to take part in fashion shows, music videos and even snowboard. Talk about versatile. Justin Bieber Biebs appears in basketball game NBA 2K13, which is kinda funny, considering he’s 5’7” in real life. For the game, his character’s height has been increased to 6’4”, allowing him to compete with the likes of Chicago Bulls’ Derrick Rose. Additional celebrity cameos on the Xbox 360/PS3/Wii game include Chamillionaire, Bow-Wow and the Jersey Shore gang, but we prefer the soundtrack. Anyone for some Jay-Z?

That’s the only explanation we’re getting for this random-ass photo? There’s just no stopping Queen Delevingne…
