Welcome to our Early Learning Centre As Head of the Junior School, I have the pleasure of being involved in the first and most formative years of your son’s education.
At Scotch, we recognise that every boy develops at a different rate intellectually, physically and emotionally. We meet the challenge of creating a positive foundation for school by providing a broad-based curriculum that enables each boy to explore a wide variety of intellectual, physical, and creative opportunities at his own pace. From day one of schooling, we aim to provide a learning environment in which students feel happy and safe in which to learn and grow.
“Knowing the boy” guides everything we do at Scotch College; every aspect of our new Early Learning Centre has been designed around the learning needs of boys. In Kindergarten and Pre-Primary, this means we merge the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme with the Reggio Emilia philosophy of child-led learning. Our programme inspires boys to inquire and wonder about their world, while our purpose built Early Learning Centre encourages collaboration, communication and exploration. This approach sets the foundation for your boy’s journey through our College that commences in Kindergarten.

How Boys Learn The key to harnessing your son’s natural curiosity and unlocking his love of learning is to understand how he learns.
We will regularly assess his skills in a range of areas to help us tailor his learning programme. All boys will be screened by our Speech Pathologist and Occupational Therapist. This will assist us in identifying early any underlying issues that may need attention.
We know boys are tactile learners - they love to investigate how things work handson. So we develop his reading, writing, spelling and mathematics skills through play and inquiry-based activities. In keeping with the Reggio Emilia approach, his teachers will observe his play and listen to his questions to find out what interests him, and then create opportunities to explore his passions further. We know boys are better able to concentrate after they’ve burnt off excess energy, so we incorporate physical play into his day. We know boys learn best when they feel safe and have a sense of belonging. Smaller class sizes allow our teachers to cater to the individual needs of your son.

and engaging play and incorporate wet and dry play areas. A veggie patch and children’s kitchen reinforce the interconnectedness of learning, as boys learn to prepare the produce they have helped grow. The boys will visit our Bush School weekly and be offered opportunities to explore in nature, to test their skills and expand their creativity.
Inside, the Kindergarten and Pre-Primary rooms are filled with natural light and open spaces that are ever-changing as the boys explore their interests. Spaces are arranged to encourage collaboration, communication and exploration. Linking the two classes is an art atelier, where artwork, photographs and classroom materials are all on display, documenting each boy’s thoughts and learning process. Here the boys will also create through paintings, sculpture, role play and dance. We know boys need to pit themselves against challenges, so our nature-based playgrounds promote physically demanding

A Snapshot of your Son’s Day In order to prepare your son for school, our Kindergarten & Pre-Primary hours are from 8:30am to 3pm, Monday to Friday. To help him develop a sense of belonging – and make your morning a little easier – he’ll wear a uniform.
Our small class sizes will allow our staff to develop a deep understanding of your son’s needs and offer extra support or extension where needed. We know that when boys are hungry and thirsty they have difficulty concentrating, so we build in plenty of opportunities for healthy snacking: Crunch & Sip at 9.30am; fruit time at 10.30am; lunch at 12.30pm. Boys are free to refill their water bottles throughout the day.
We know young boys are very emotionally dependent on their parents, so we invite you into the classroom to do some settling in activities with your son at the start of the day. You are also invited to experience your son’s learning journey by being a parent helper in the classroom, when your schedule permits.
By 3pm he’ll be bursting with news to tell you about what he discovered that day.
His day will include a range of stimulating play-based activities that will nurture his social and emotional wellbeing, as well as build the foundation for academic skills. He will be supported by his teacher and a qualified teacher’s assistant, plus specialists teaching staff who will work with him in Physical Education, Music, French and Visual Arts.
