The snowdrops are out and so is our latest brochure, full of new tartans, traditional tartans styled in different ways, and beautiful fabrics woven in Scotland steeped in history and heritage. Carrying a business through a pandemic has required those famous Scottish traits of grit and determination, and we are excited to emerge with a year ahead packed full of events, and opportunities to be back out chatting to you, fellow clan members and customers, as often as we can. Our new store is open in Albany, NY, our Edinburgh shop stocks more tartans than ever, the list of pop up store locations is growing by the minute and Virtual appointments are here to stay, so there really is no excuse not to talk tartan.

VISIT OUR CLAN PAGES AND EXPLORE YOUR ROOTS TOP TIPS: • Every clan has many septs and other names associated with it these are listed on the clan pages. • The sound of a name is generally more important than the spelling, as standardised spelling is a fairly recent development. • Many believe that Mac is Scottish and Mc is Irish but in reality this is simply another spelling variation or abbreviation in ancient records. • You might have a clan or district (regional) connection.

What of our Celtic cousins? The Celtic nations include Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, Isle of Man and Brittany. There are tartans associated with all of these nations and all of our products can be made in any one of these tartans. If you need some help and advice finding your tartan our Customer Service team offers a genuine Scottish welcome. CLAN OF THE MONTH Every month we choose a clan and celebrate their history, castles, famous faces and an interview or two with interesting people from the clan or society. We always welcome your input, so if it is your clans turn and you have stories to share let us know. It is so intriguing to hear the journey of Scots overseas and how they ended up there, along with how you continue to celebrate your heritage in so many different ways.

DESIGNS ON TARTAN Our in house tartan designer, Emily, has been busy this year: As soon as we settled on Albany as our new US home, we knew we had to design a tartan to represent the Scottish Community within Albany County. The Tartan will be used to celebrate the opening of our new US Store in the town of Colonie as well as highlighting the strong Scottish heritage found throughout Albany County. The colours of the Albany tartan are taken from
the Albany County Seal, The Town of Colonie Seal & The City of Albany Flag. The sett was inspired by that of the Stewart Clan tartan in honour of the Duke of Albany, James Stuart, who was a member of the House of Stuart a branch of Clan Stewart. An additional white stripe not found within the Stewart Clan tartans was added to create a saltire (Saint Andrew's Cross) within the design, to represent Scotland’s Patron Saint, St Andrew.

TWEED: THE SCOTTISH ALTERNATIVE TO TARTAN Waistcoats in every style and the tweed or tartan of your choice. Did you know that the name “tweed” came about due to a misreading of tweel, the Scots form of twill, further confused by the link to the River Tweed. The name stuck and now tweed is famous worldwide.

BAIRNS AT THE KIRK In Scots we call the place of the wedding a kirk (church in English), but if the wedding place is Roman Catholic or Episcopal we tend to refer to it as a chaipel ("chaypul"). Not to be confused with the "Kirkin' O' The Tartans" which is the Scottish-American custom involving the presentation of a Scottish family's symbol, its tartan, at church for blessing.
