THE CITY AND STYLE ISSUE— SAN DIEGO’S GOT IT GOING ON! Dear Readers,
A
ll of us here at FINE Magazine can say with certainty that we love San Diego. We want to share with you some of the best things about one of the greatest places in the world. The weather doesn’t get much better than it does here, so we are taking advantage of it and doing as much as possible outdoors, indoors, anywhere we can, and look great doing it! We wanted to share some great ideas for exploring the city and maybe give you a taste of some fine fashion styles that you didn’t know you could pull off. The best place to wear an eccentric, couture outfit is one of the great museums that San Diego has to offer, become the art yourself! Take a look at some designer trends for men and women, steal some celebrity styles, or try on a gorgeous faux-fur coat and take it out for a stroll at San Diego’s favorite event: The Pride Festival. If you get tired from running around the city, we mapped out a great tour of San Diego’s best breweries, so take a load off and have a sip of one of the many amazing brews San Diego has to offer. And if you need something more filling, head down to The Patio on 101 in Encinitas for a delicious and interesting meal. Check out our take on men’s hairstyles and choose the one that best flatters you. And of course, don’t miss our feature photospread showcasing local designer Nicole Frank. So as summer begins to draw the blinds and the days grow shorter, we implore you, go out and enjoy the sun and make all the memories you can. Whether it’s fashion, art, or food, explore the city we all love, find a new favorite fashion trend and wear it with pride around this fantastic Southern California gem of a city. We can’t wait to see you strut your stuff around this gorgeous city!

San Diego Museums Showcase the Best that Art has to Offer Photos and Story By Amanda Dominguez-Chio

lanning to explore San Diego? Whether you’re a fan of art or a history buff, these museums are sure to entertain and enlighten your summer.
Bhavna Mehta’s “Leela: Portrait of a Woman in a Green Dress” from the Timken Museum of Art
MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTS BALBOA PARK) The first of the three museums to visit in Balboa Park is the Museum of Photographic Arts. Currently, there are four exhibitions: Moment in Time: A Collection of Photographs Works from the Bank of America Collection; The Artist Speaks: Erica Deeman, George Hurrell: Hollywood Glamour; and Hidden Worlds. The George Hurrell: Hollywood Glamour exhibition features portraits of Rita Hayworth, Clark Gable, Katherine Hepburn, Jean Harlow, Greta Garbo, and John Barrymore. Though the exhibition is small, fans of the Golden Age of Hollywood will thoroughly appreciate the work of Hurrell. The second exhibit is The Artist Speaks: Eri-
ca Deeman, featuring two installations: “Brown” and “Silhouettes.” What’s interesting about Deeman’s portraits is she found her subjects by approaching friends, family, and strangers she encountered, even going so far as placing an ad on Craigslist, to have subjects sit for portraits. In “Silhouettes,” the San Francisco-based artist Erica Deeman tackles race, gender, and cultural identity. From a distance, the portraits appear black and white, but closer up, it’s revealed that the portraits are in color, revealing details regarding the individual’s appearance. As for “Brown,” the men in each portrait were placed against a backdrop matching their skin tone. Each portrait depicted a man shown without clothing, allowing the audience to connect with the person. mopa.org SAN DIEGO HISTORY CENTER BALBOA PARK There are currently seven exhibitions at the San Diego History Center. Along with the exhibitions, San Diego History Center provides a daily screening of the film The Jewel of San Diego, a 30-minute documentary on the history of Balboa Park. Marston’s History Emporium: A Hand’s-On Learning Lab is an exhibition targeted towards children. Parents and children will encounter seven stations, such as Our San Diego and The Sights, Sounds (and Smells) of Old San Diego. The main attraction at the museum is LGBTQ+ San Diego: Stories of Struggles and Triumphs. This exhibition recently opened in the beginning of July and provides a comprehensive history focusing on San Diego’s LGBTQ community. The San Diego History Center partnered with Lambda Archives of San Diego, (LASD) making this their first exhibition in Balboa Park. Founded in 1987, the LASD dedicates to preserving the memories of LGBTQ people’s lives, work, and cultures. As soon as you walk into the exhibit, you’ll see rainbow streamers; a timeline adorns the wall, chronicling the rich history. There are eight pillars that focus on specific topics, such as persecution, influential people, and triumphs. The exhibit is scheduled to run from now to January 2020. sandiegohistory.org MUSEUM OF MAKING MUSIC CARLSBAD The Museum of Making Music dedicates itself to providing the story of music by describing the

making and selling of musical instruments and products. Of the five galleries, each one provides a station, or studio, that allows visitors to try out instruments. Not to mention that each gallery is interactive, meaning there are buttons visitors can press that offer a glimpse into the popular music at that time. Starting in the early 1900s, the gallery “America’s Music Products Industry Comes of Age” lists several genres of popular music, including big band, ragtime, and sentimental ballads. Galleries four and five explore the evolution of rock and roll. With the introduction of rock acts such as Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, and The Supremes, this led to a decline of orchestrations popular in the early 1900s and a rise in guitar sales. The later part of the 20th century “diversified” popular music. Artists and bands experimented, creating subgenres such as glam rock, funk, and indie rock. Towards the end of the museum, you will find an exhibition titled “Music Photography of Henry Diltz.” Notable favorites include photographs of The Doors, two photographs in particular. “The Doors, Venice Pier, CA” features the band underneath the iconic Venice Beach Pier looking off camera; according to Diltz, drummer John Densmore caught sight of a surfer, causing the rest of the band to look in that direction. The exhibit runs until October 28, 2018 so be sure to check it out while you still can. museumofmakingmusic.org TIMKEN MUSEUM OF ART BALBOA PARK Currently on exhibit at the Timken Museum of Art is “Leela: Portrait of a Woman in a Green Dress.” Bhavna Mehta designed her three-dimensional artwork after Bartolomeo Veneto’s “Portrait of a Lady.” Given that Mehta’s mediums are paper cutting and embroidery, Mehta created an exquisite sculpture. At the Timken, you can closely admire the intricate details of the embroidery adorning Leela’s dress, the gorgeous headpiece, and the butterflies that surround her face. The piece supposedly took approximately two weeks to complete. Veneto’s “Portrait of a Lady” is situated a few feet away from Leela, allowing visitors to witness the contrast.

Looking Forward at this Fall’s Accessory Trends By Blythe Sinclair
S
ummer 2018 has seen some intriguing and inspiring fashion trends, but they will soon come to pass as the fall season comes more and more into focus. No more toothpick-sized Matrix-inspired sunglasses, and no more ankle-bracelet purses (thank you, Kendall Jenner). The trends in accessories especially will be a 180° change from those seen this past summer, finding influence and inspiration from western style and 50’s elegance. This fall, the overarching theme to keep in mind is this: “the bigger, the better.” Pile on those bracelets and get ready to break out those old gloves and oversized sunglasses that you pretend not to have in the back of your closet; fall is coming.
Bold, geometric sunglasses and an elaborate brooch tie this look together
Chunky statement jewelry is what this fall is all about

corporating chunky chain necklaces, layered chokers, and mismatched earrings; don’t be afraid to pile it on and create chaotic beauty with gold and gems around your neck and wrists. Collect those statement pieces and stack those chunky bracelets high, because this fall, there is no such thing as too much. To sum up the jewelry guidelines: BOLD. BLING. BAGS Yet another accessory that seemed to shrink in size as the summer progressed. This fall, bigger bags are coming to the forefront. While larger purses are definitely coming back into style, there is still room for those hands-free belt bags that play off of the vintage fanny pack, especially if it has a name brand plastered on top of it. Flaunt what you’ve got this fall, whether it’s your Chanel fanny pack, or your massive tote bag.
SHOES Statement bags are no more! The crazy prints and patterns that adorned bags this past season have moved on to footwear. Step out for the night with your classic black purse, statement shoes are the new statement bag. Throw on a pair of animal print heels to add something interesting to an otherwise basic outfit. One thing that has carried over from the summer trends are the clunky dad sneakers, although this season will find the sneakers with embellishments and add-ons. Keep an eye out for cowboy boots around town, as the western inspiration for this fall has peeked through into the shoe trends as well. Finally, be able to carry all of
GLOVES, SCARVES, AND BELTS While scarves and belts seem like an ordinary, everyday accessory, this fall gives you the freedom to really amp up those everyday accessories. Scarves are more than just fabric to wrap around your neck. Use it as a strap on your bag or tie it onto your purse to spice it up a little bit. As for belts, stack some skinny belts, or just use a big, chunky belt to cinch in a loose top. The bigger the buckyour must-haves around in style le, the better! TAN FRANCE A newcomer to the mainstream media but an icon of great renown in the fashion world. Tan France’s style centers around striking the eye with bold color or focusing attention on one discreet detail of his attire. This distinct flirtation with extremes without being too over the top has defined Tan France as a known name in the style game. Unlike others on this list, his style is the focal point of his image as he applies his fashion expertise to the show “Queer Eye.” Mr. France is sporting a cream-colored sports blazer with a baby blue ampersand, a white dress shirt and black well-fit jeans. Colors that complement one another and a splash of something that contrasts and catches the eye. That and a quick trip to your barber is all it takes to capture Tan France’s signature style. His self-assured presence and the indescribable volume of his hairstyle is another story. His style is bold, playing with patterns but mostly sticking with darker tones as is common with most African Americans. Even so, his color choices always enhance his look or draw attention to himself in the best ways. The thing to take away from this look is to be memorable and you’ll be fashionable. Mr. Glover stands in a canary yellow hall surrounded by timeless pieces of art in the background. Controlling the focus to his upper body with his wide brimmed hat and the wild designs of his shirt, Glover uses the solid color of his royal blue shorts and loafer-style lace ups to draw the eye up and down again. nown, loved, and followed the world over; everyone has a celebrity that they enjoy. Some people admire a celebrity for their on-screen presence but many more are also wellknown for their flawless style. Below are some of the most stylish Hollywood celebrities in both formal and casual circles and how you can “borrow” their style for yourself.
CONOR MCGREGOR One would think that a man whose occupation is being punched in the face wouldn’t look very nice. This couldn’t be further from the truth for Conor McGregor. The MMA fighter and former lightweight champion is known for his brutal punches, punishing insults, and unreserved style. Ever a symbol of power and status, the suits McGregor wears are just another piece of gear to intimidate his opponent and posterize his dominance over his less capable and less fashionable competition. As an MMA fighter McGregor can wear just about anything he wants without too many complaints. To stress this, he often wears custom-made suits. Quality is everything and just like Glover, McGreGQ.COM
Styles to Steal
For men, fashion truly is only an accessory to attitude, not a supplement. Whether you take anything away from this list or not, understand that your personal style can always be elevated. A bit of color, an extra pattern; the smallest consideration can make your outfit pop and all it takes is an extra moment of consideration before you dress. Keep it simple and stay classy, gentleman.

CHADWICK BOSEMAN From the “Classic” to the “New Classic” Chadwick Boseman is equally at home in casual street wear as well as black-tie. The famed actor is known for his portrayals as real-life African American icons such as Jackie Robinson and James Brown as well as the fictional King of Wakanda. The ever-rising star is also a symbol for men’s fashion and experiments with color and texture in his classy suits. Every bit as detailed as his fashion-savvy counterpart, he reworks the conventions of the standard gentleman and builds on them. His wider range of choices create a broader and more accessible template for more men to achieve his style. Mr. Boseman stands on the blue carpet of the 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards in
RYAN REYNOLDS More known for his zany humor and snappy comedic sense. Ryan Reynolds is well-known as a style icon to most men acquainted with fashion. A surprising inclusion, the only way to describe Reynolds style is that it is “oddly appropriate.” That he is so invested in his appearance might seem strange to those who only know him as a funny man, but fashion is a form of power. Power of presence, and if your presence is weak or stands out in the wrong way, you won’t give off or receive the response you want. That Reynolds is so aware of his appearance, may be an extension of his comedic style. He wants people to be laughing with him, not at him, and while it may not require a suit every time; Reynolds’ style is basic but attention-grabbing nonetheless. Ryan Reynolds infuriates and delights in his casual “Dad Attire,” a $1,500 jacket and $100 pants. Showcasing his devil-may-care persona by chugging milk straight from the carton whilst preparing a bowl of cereal. A perfect example of the everyman’s fashion. A few accents are all that most men can afford both in terms of cost and time in the morning. As a proud actor and a proud father, Reynolds effortlessly embodies this idea with his accessible style. COLIN FIRTH To Americans, Colin Firth may seem to be a perfect example of the “Stereotypical English Gentleman” and that is exactly what makes him such a men’s style icon. His is a classic and timeless style, every accessory is meticulous, and the stitching of every thread is deliberate. With a storied career that speaks for itself. Looking at him is like looking back through history at an era of simplistic and stated authority that doesn’t shout at you, nor does it need to do so to garner attention and respect from those around him. This idea can work for you too, if wild color simply isn’t who you are. Wear your style, wear it confidently and your reputation will speak for you. Mr. Firth stands beside his wife, Livia Giuggioli, at the after-party for the Oscars. Sporting a classic tuxedo with silver button covers, while the Mrs. brings a note of hot pink to the pair. Classics are always classy.

all Fashion Week is one of the most highly-anticipated events of the year. Fashion fiends travel to New York, London, Paris, and Milan as designers showcase their latest collections. Fashion Week has a long and rich history. Formally known as Press Week, Fashion Week began its humble origins in New York City in 1943. At the time, Paris was highly-regarded for setting the fashion trends. Charles Frederick Worth is considered the person to set the foundation for fashion week. Regarded as the Father of Haute Couture, Worth was a notable fashion designer, opening his own business in 1858. According to Laura Cohen, Worth began to show clients “a pre-prepared selection of original designs in Paris,” thus forming the idea of a collection. In addition, Cohen claims that Worth showcased his clothing by using live models, not only causing an uproar but also “creating the role of models.” This concept eventually found itself in New York when Enrich Brothers, a shop in New York, decided to host their first fashion show in order to attract their female customers. Shortly thereafter, many department stores followed suit by hosting their own fashion shows.

Up until the 1940s, U.S. designers heavily relied on Parisian couture for inspiration. The Nazi occupation of France, however, prevented U.S. journalists from traveling for Paris Fashion Week. Yet, Eleanor Lambert, a fashion publicist for the New York Dress Institute, took this opportunity to showcase American designers by inviting the media to Press Week in New York. At the event was Ruth Finley, who later created the first Fashion Calendar, which detailed the week’s events in a comprehensive guide. In 1962, Lambert founded the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), with a simple mission: spotlighting designers and putting their name and work on the map. Eventually, other cities caught on and created their own fashion week, starting with Milan, which was founded in 1958, Paris, founded in 1973, and London, founded in 1984. Known as “the big four,” New York, Milan, Paris, and London are considered the fashion capitals of the world. For decades, New York Fashion Week was held in several places, such as lofts, galleries, and night clubs. That all changed in 1990. During Michael
Kors’ show, a piece of plaster fell from the ceiling, prompting the CFDA to take initiative. Led by Fern Mallis, who was then-executive director of the CFDA, she united designers under “tents” at Bryant Park to showcase their work. Eventually, the crowds outgrew, moving the venue to the Lincoln Center in 2010 where the New York Fashion Week was held until 2015. Since then, New York Fashion Week is held throughout the city, allowing designers to choose their venues. Because of its long history, Fashion Week has undergone various changes. Most recently, technology has helped make Fashion Week more accessible for guests. According to Colleen Kratofil, Burberry’s Fall 2010 Collection became the first “global fashion show,” live-streaming the show online, “reaching over 100 million viewers.” In keeping up with making fashion trends accessible, FINE magazine put together some of this fall’s fashion trends.
August 21 – September 16
LEATHER According to Ella Alexander, leather was the most dominant fabric. From jackets, skirts, and boots, leather appeared in various collections and different colors. Alexander McQueen, for instance, featured a black and emerald leather dress. Modeling for Miu Miu, Edie Campbell appeared wearing an amaranth red leather pencil skirt. The recent trend of pop culture nostalgia may have had played a role in inspiring many designers to use leather in their collection. As Eric Wilson so eloquently puts it, “Prepare for a black maxi reboot as designers mine the dark underworld of modern corporate America for a look that’s one-part The Matrix and one-part McKinsey & Co.” ANIMAL PRINT In his Women’s Autumn/Winter 2018 Collection, Tom Ford featured several captivating looks. Ranging from colors as subtle as black to more vibrant colors such as yellow and red; animal print is all about making a statement. Tom Ford is not the only designer that used animal print in their collection. Victoria Beckham also used animal print but in a more understated manner. As part of her this year’s Ready-to-Wear collection, her Split-Sleeve Fitted Coat, for example, features a leopard print. Made with chenille jacquard material, the coat also features a wide lapel, pockets, and belt, giving off a clean look. INTO THE WEST Designers such as Chloé, Coach, and Fendi are contributing to Western wear. Ella Alexander reports that Isabel Marant opened her show with models wearing prairie dresses and cowboy boots. In her collection, Marant also featured a fringe detail to a coat and blouse. Prairie dresses were typically paired with leather boots to complete the look. STATEMENT TIGHTS Tom Ford and Victoria Beckham are not the only designers that utilized leggings and tights in their collection. Apart from these two, R13 relied on hosiery to make a statement. As Ellie Pithers states, R13 used hosiery as “a canvas for environmental comment, digitally printed with landscapes to go hand-inhand with hoodies depicting scenes protesting the construction of the Keystone pipeline in Utah.”

e’ve all seen those flashy style bloggers on Instagram. I can’t even scroll through the popular page without seeing flashes of trendy fashionista bloggers promoting merchandise. It seems to be the new trend. Integrating gorgeous looks with location and pretty looking food. There’s no telling if the photos are even real but they look nice of course. How hard could it be? Wake up, cute outfit, trendy café/ restaurant, perfect pic, and repeat. But, what’s more exciting is the idea of showing the world your style. Fashion expresses who you are. Negin Mersalehi, nominated for Forbes Europe 30 under 30, pretty much looks perfect in every photo. Everyone wishes to travel the world posting pictures of our outfits for the day sipping on a cappuccino, looking effortlessly cool at trendy café’s. Try hard styles are just not in. Nor will they ever be for that matter…Simplify. Simplify. Simplify… that’s all I can say. Natural makeup is always a must and the “natural look” is always ideal, but when it comes to fashion, it’s all about the daring colors, colorful bags, and edgy look. That Chloe bag can turn a nothing outfit into something. That Michael Kors watch or David Yurman bracelet can easily turn an average outfit into a 10, and let me tell you, you don’t even have to hire someone to find you the perfect outfit. It’s all about looking in the right places for these chic styles. There’s really no other self-expressive way to make a dynamic statement than wearing the latest fashion trends. People take you more seriously when you know how to dress too. I mean not only are you set for every job interview, but everything else comes easy too. Dressing up should be

fun and enjoyable. I always knew what I wanted and didn’t like dressing up the way other people wanted me to. As long as I am comfortable with what I am wearing I feel confident. That’s why fashion, dressing up, and feeling strong and dominant when you leave your house is all vital to being successful and accomplishing anything. Life is hectic, at least we can feel sure about one thing. The way you feel about yourself when you wear anything, or even leave the house, tells a lot about your motivation and drive to accomplish any task or goal. Not all of us can afford stylists and five-star beauticians to get us ready for a work day, or just to leave the house, but if we can take anything with us it’s that creating a morning routine like turning on some good music or going for a morning run before planning your outfit for the day makes it a more enjoyable process. Confidence is key of course. Before doing anything, taking a deep breath helps, but so does self-perspective. The way we perceive ourselves through the way we dress is pivotal. Style is everything. Fashion is alive. Wearing the brands means nothing if you don’t represent the identity. For instance, 2018 brings in some pretty fresh styles. First with wallet purses. Prada, Chanel, Coach, Chloe, YSL, anything that has a pop of color is key. Rag & Bone Dre Distressed Boyfriend Jean, $250, rag-bone.com

Reds, blues, greens, crème, all of that is in. Alex and Ani bracelets are still a thing, high-waisted shorts, jeans, and even converse are still in. But really it seems people are pretty comfortable in their decked-out in Lululemon yoga pants, a t-shirt, maybe a matching hat to be extra chic and some comfortable, yet hipster Techloom Rose Gold Phantom Lulus speaks wonders. A Balmain black leather cropped jacket is a great way to downplay any outfit on a casual weekday or dress it up for a night out. Pair with some hot pink Jimmy Choo pumps or go extra bold with all black from head-to-toe or even pair this setup with some new Gucci ‘ace’ Sneakers. Or, simply pair any outfit like this one with some classic Adidas sneakers and you’ll surely make every eye do a double take without looking like you put a ton of effort into your outfit. This fall, pull out your stripes and polka dots especially if you’re actively trying to keep up with this coming trend. That is, sweater dresses. Floral patterned v-neck blouses and Lacademie wrap dresses are in. Simply throw on your darkest jeans and complete the look by pairing with a Gucci belt, the new Eyelove Stuart Weitzman mules, or simply a crème cashmere sweater and voila your outfit’s complete! For a casual, put together look, it is all about the boyfriend jeans. Distressed slim Rag & Bone’s, a logo back, zip-front bomber jacket and a classic gold/silver David Yurman bracelet is all you need for a look that screams elegant and classy but laid back. Try it out! You’ll thank me later. Most people think dressing with style is difficult or stressful. Finding the perfect outfit for work, a night out, or on a day-today basis should be fun. The thing is, layering trendy jackets with a simple outfit, or a pair of Hudson’s and a simple ALLSAINTS Emelyn tonic raw-edge v-neck shouldn’t be too difficult. It’s not rocket science, but it can be a little intimidating to some. That’s why getting ideas from magazines, Pinterest, Instagram or even out on the streets is important. Get inspired by your surroundings and channel it into your outfit.

While sailing on your private boat tour on the San Diego bay, enjoy breathtaking views of Downtown, the naval base, aircraft carriers and submarines, not to mention an incredible abundance of sea life including sea lions, dolphins, and whales. Whether you’re after a classic yacht charter, sailboat or catamaran for your corporate event, a sailing lesson, a whale watching tour, or an ash scattering burial at sea for a loved one, Pacifica Sailing Charters can provide private boat charters and boat tours, private parties, bachelorette parties, proposals, anniversaries, birthdays, ash scatterings, or simply a romantic sunset sail. Several types of yachts are available for guests. The racing sailboat is a classic restored 1973 Ranger 37 named Masquerade. This 37-foot yacht was known as “The Rocket” back in the day due to her lightning speed and innovative hull design. Much heavier than traditional boats today, Masquerade provides a steady, smooth sail. Along with Captain Jack and his crew, you’re welcome

This catamaran can be used for private parties, surfing trips, private birthday parties, bachelorette parties, burials at sea, or just a meandering cruise around the bay. The charter company has also added a sleek new 45-foot Sea Ray Express power yacht for your harbor excursions should you feel the need for luxury. If you want to leave the harbor, you can head past the tip of Point Loma toward the Coronado Islands. View the massive kelp beds, which lie just off of the Point Loma lighthouse. Stay Warm and Have Fun in Luxe, AnimalSafe Fur By Claire Thomas Duchess Coat in Coral

risty Smith is the creative mind behind Furrocious Furr, a fun and eclectic line focusing on faux fur clothing. Inspired by the many music festivals she had attended, Kristy launched this line in March 2014 realizing she could recreate the funky, show-stopping pieces she had seen many times before. The result was more than a simple recreation. After investing time and care into this project, Kristy had individualized these stylings by putting her own spin on them catapulting the one-of-a-kind line, Furrocious Furr, to success. The main source of inspiration was drawn from the “Burning Man” festival which takes place in the desert and gets bitterly cold at night, therefore, Furrocious Furr specializes in faux fur coats. With over 60 faux fur options, 5 sequin options, and 24 available color schemes, anyone is bound to find exactly what they are looking for. All orders are custom made and all pieces are made locally in Southern California. I had the privilege of asking Kristy a few questions about her fun fashion line. FINE MAGAZINE How much time did F.F. take from conception to launch? KRISTY SMITH I never intended on having a faux fur coat business. My background and passion are Men’s Vandal Coat in Bandicoot

in contemporary dresses, tops, and swimwear. The story behind Furrocious Furr is that I was tired of being cold at Burning Man, because when I get cold I can’t have fun anymore. People would come up to me and my boyfriend dressed in the capes at various festivals and ask where I got it and if they could get one. So, I decided to make something really cool and super warm to wear back in 2013 for my boyfriend and I at the time. I started making them for friends and friends of friends and my business grew and grew from one cape to a full coat line. I went to the fashion district and found some super luxurious faux fur. I created his and hers long capes with over-sized hoods. I spray-painted Halloween Ram shaped horns and drilled holes in them to sew onto the hoods. I also made matching faux fur boot covers and hand paws to wear with the capes. FINE What inspired you to specialize in faux fur coats? SMITH After my faux fur capes came a faux fur vest for guys and a hooded cape-let for women. After that I made my first faux fur coat. People loved the coats so much I just kept expanding. FINE It remains consistently warm in Southern California. Do you have many out-of-state sales? SMITH I get a lot of out-of-country and out-ofstate sales from my Etsy Store. FINE If you were to customize your own faux fur coat, describe what you would choose? SMITH It would be my latest & greatest creation so far—the LED faux-fur-trimmed flip sequin Temptress Coat. It’s pretty spectacular with over 200 color changing modes and a Pom-Pom belt that is like having an LED poi to play with. FINE What are the future plans for Furrocious Furr? SMITH To launch my LED collection once my LED system is finalized and to grow my business every year and promote Furrocious Furr, not only as a festival brand, but also as a contemporary fashion brand. I also want to promote Furrocious Furr towards places that utilize real fur as an eco/ animal friendly alternative. To order a custom piece, get in contact, or learn more, visit furrociousfurr.com.

How to Get the Fall Look You Crave Men’s Hair Guide By Joe Duffy
W
hen you go to the barber, it can be difficult to get exactly what you want. You have a vision in your head of an ideal cut, but you’re not sure how to relay it to your barber. Instead, you settle for a vague description of what you want and hope that you end up satisfied. Here’s what to ask for to get the stylish cut you’re looking for every time you visit the barber. CREW CUT A classic, tapered cut that leaves the top of the head short and everywhere else even shorter. IVY LEAGUE This is similar to the crew cut—short sides, longer on top—but the Ivy League leaves enough length on top to style in to a side part. It’s a timeless and sophisticated look that doesn’t take much effort to maintain. FADE If you’re going for a short style, it’s hard to go wrong with a fade. A fade is where your hair tapers from the top to the bottom, in varying lengths. Typically, the hair on top is left short, but lately many men have been rocking fades with more length on top. The high fade usually leaves the sides almost completely buzzed, while a low fade lets you keep a little more hair on each side. If you want something in between, ask for a mid-fade. Using gel or pomade, you can style your hair neatly for a more formal look or give it a low-maintenance appearance by mussing up the top with your fingers.
A side part with personality
SIDE PART Another timeless look for men who want to keep a little length in their hairstyle while still coming off as classy and mature. It can be attained by asking your barber for a longer, but tapered, buzz on the sides—around a ‘5’ in length—and a trim on top. Ask your barber to leave enough hair to allow for a side part. To style, find your natural part and use a high-quality pomade on slightly damp hair to push it over and work it into place. QUIFF The quiff is a style that is boldly rugged, with a bit more subtlety than the large and flowy style of the pompadour haircut. In a quiff, the hair is often piled up on top in a way that is handsome and confident, while at the same time appearing haphazardly tousled. Length upfront contrasted with a shortness everywhere else creates the illusion of a fuller head of hair.
A handsomely styled quiff

barber to maximize length and sleekness rather than layer the long hair. Then, to style, run a decent portion of shine cream or pomade through your hair before combing it all back. BARBERS IN SAN DIEGO The listed prices represent the cost of a basic haircut at each barbershop. More services may be offered by the shop, and you can find out more about these services on the shop’s website. LEFTY’S BARBERSHOP—PACIFIC BEACH Lefty’s has been operating since the 1950s, a fact that is pretty apparent upon walking into the barbershop. You can see the vintage photos and trinkets on the walls and listen to classic music as you’re situated and prepared for your cut in an antique chair. Haircuts are affordable, and quality is high, as every cut includes a hot-lather neck shave and razor line up. VINCE’S BARBERSHOP—LITTLE ITALY Vince’s got its start in the 1940s as a small shop providing men with quality cuts and shaves. Now, almost 80 years later, the tradition of high-grade service continues on. The shop is run by Boris Zavurov, a 5th generation barber with over 17 years of haircutting experience. Haircuts are done the old-fashioned way—a beer while you sit in the waiting room, a straight razor treatment, a shampoo, and a shoulder massage to finish it off. MISTER BROWN’S—NORTH PARK Mister Brown’s fuses a rustic aesthetic with modern touches that give it a very gentlemanly, stylish feel. They have a bar fully equipped to serve drinks to patrons. It’s an atmosphere that offers much more than your usual barbershop, adding a social element that encourages you to hang around a while after the cut is finished.

arrison “Bud” Klueck is honored to be voted the Best Family Lawyer in the FINE Magazine Readers’ poll. This is a special year for Bud; he was honored by a local bar association with a Lifetime Achievement Award celebrating his more than 30 years practicing law. In speaking with Bud Klueck, he told us, “To be recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award by my peers in front of friends and family was so rewarding. Our law and mediation firm – Klueck & Hoppes APC – is now one of the largest family law firms in San Diego County but it took years of effort to build.” Bud acknowledges there are stresses involved with managing a large law firm. However, there are great personal satisfactions as well. One such satisfaction is providing quality legal services to a diverse clientele, something he considers to be his firm’s core mission. Bud says, “One of the first acts of any new person at our law firm is to read and commit to our Mission Statement entitled, “Our Commitment to Access to Justice.” Throughout his career, Bud has a history of adding

onto his professional capabilities and credentials. For example, in 2013, he earned a Masters in Counseling Psychology. “Nowadays, that psychological background informs almost everything that I do as an attorney and as a mediator,” Bud explains. “I recently began teaching Domestic Violence Prevention classes, which is so important in helping others learn to deal with the everyday stress of relating to others more effectively.” Bud is also an Adjunct Professor having taught at three law schools and is a credentialed mediator. In 2016, Bud was elected the National Ombudsman for American Mensa. In addition, Bud was recently elected to serve a three-year term as a Director of the San Diego County Bar Association. Bud says, “Being a true professional requires constant growth. It’s like what scientists say about sharks. Like sharks, professionals have to keep moving forward, or they will die.” To have a consultation about family law with Bud Klueck please call 619-448-6500 or email Garrison@FamilyLawSanDiego.com. www. New Encinitas Restaurant Intrigues The Patio on 101 Features the Best of California Story and Photos by Alan Quinn
W Pleasant reminders of their motto entice patrons to enjoy their time here
The Patio’s exterior welcomes its guests with a beautiful entryway
36
ith everyone flying off on their exotic summer vacations, a perfect place to get away might be closer than expected. Getting to the heart of Encinitas, California is a casual rail ride away; lazily rolling alongside the easy San Diego coastline helps with the transition from stress to relaxation. You’re left at the Encinitas Station right on the Historic 101 Highway, a “touristy” area with a pleasant contrasting aesthetic of beach culture and developing modernism. The Patio, formally known as The Patio on 101-Encinitas; is the newest addition to the restaurants here; making a name for itself with California Fusion, and they couldn’t be more appropriately placed. To understand why, take a walk around Encinitas both in the popular main street and the residential areas around it. The best time to do this is definitely before dinner, your legs will hate you, but your Fitbit and appetite will appreciate it. The main streets have an evident “beach town” vibe. Old style buildings along the northern end of the strip are constructed of fading brown wood. The newer buildings and restaurants have a worn but classic style so that they both stand out and fit in. However, the real Encinitas opens up once you tear away from the familiar and observe
F IN E SD.CO M | FACEBOOK.COM/FINEMAGAZ INES
the houses and architecture. One turn in any direction up in the hills shows something completely different from the things around it. Art-deco style homes pop up right across the street from apartments with ranch-style archways and other houses covered in dust may have neighbors literal inches away whose home looks like something out of a Home & Garden Magazine. The drastic contrasts can be shocking but more than that is the sense of normalcy by the residents in Encinitas, most visibly when everyone is together on Moonlight Beach. A typical beach by all accounts, but due to the amount of useable shoreline the people are clustered so close together that (from the right angle) their beach umbrellas form a multicolored sea all its own. This variance in style is present throughout the area and The Patio also features this dynamic with both their flavors and decor. Coming from the station at Encinitas you’ll most likely stumble into the open concept of The Patio and wind up behind the hostess. It happens fairly often so don’t sweat it. If anything, it makes finding a place to sit much easier. Going through the front entrance normally, the ceiling is lined by blue fixtures and wood panels. The overall feel of the place is a fusion of California beachside and a more formal restaurant. Rolled napkins and clean plates at tables with sturdy plastic chairs made to look like braided wicker. Casual enough to invite you in and polished enough to make you stay without feeling underdressed. All their food features the same idea of contrast with adventurous abandon. The Shrimp Bao hosts crisp flavorful shrimp held on a Bao (Chinese soft bun) that feels like biting into a cloud, all while being in the shape of a taco. The Char Siu Bao is equally satisfying with a weighted yet fluffy bite and sharp accent with its spicy dressing. Their Crudité hosts an enticing gamut of tropical colors and tastes just as exotic with an indescribably good Bead Hummus and Curried Yogurt dipping options. Fusing culinary styles together can also yield some seemingly intimidating options such as the Fried Kimchi Octopus, but one moment of bravery will convince you, as is the case with most things that are new. For those who don’t require as much fanfare in their meal, their Spare Ribs are a familiar comfort but also feature a side of Native American sourced Anasazi Beans as a side, which is as American as it gets. Whether it was intentional or not, The Patio seems to fit neatly into Encinitas’ innate harmony and contrasting style. Their stated goal is to be a place for the whole community to “Relax, Enjoy, and Share” and by all accounts, they are set up to succeed.

Buzziest Breweries for International Beer Day Take a Tour of San Diego’s Best Breweries By Blythe Sinclair
A frothy IPA to celebrate the
J
oin the crowds for arguably the best day of the year besides maybe your birthday: International Beer Day! This hoppy holiday (pun intended) takes place on the first Friday of August each year, and this year it falls on Friday, August 4th. International Beer Day started only 11 years ago, right here in California—Santa Cruz to be exact. Over the years, it has grown from a small, localized event, to a holiday celebrated by hundreds of cities, over 70 countries, and six continents. The purpose of this holiday focuses on three main things: gathering with friends to enjoy the taste of beer, celebrating those who brew and serve the beer, and lastly, uniting the world under a single common love, and showing appreciation for the varieties of beer that exist around the world. This year, celebrate International Beer Day with your beer-loving buddies, buy them all a beer, and even the bartender too. After all, they are serving you! If you’re a little stumped about some places to spend your day, here are some of the best breweries here in San Diego that are definitely worth visiting. BALLAST POINT With many locations to choose from, Ballast Point makes themselves the easiest and most convenient choice no matter where you are located. Each location features unique artwork that complements the interior theme, as well as the types of beer they have to offer. The Scripps Ranch location offers an outdoor patio for those warm summer nights, and the original Miramar location has an extensive amount of space, complete with tours, lounge areas, and seating both indoors and outdoors. They also offer a food menu full of yummy snacks and food items that pair perfectly with their IPAs and Scuplins. STONE BREWING Perhaps most wellknown for their locations at Liberty Station and the San Diego International Airport, Stone Brewing has sprouted and grown immensely here in San Diego. The gargoyle-imprinted beer cans are their hardto-miss trademark, and

it’d truly be a shame to miss the taste of the huge selection of beer they have to offer. Stone Brewing offers a variety of beers, from year-round IPAs, to special releases, like their Notorious P.O.G. Berliner Weisse. Stone Brewing cares about more than just beer and brewing, they extend their elixir beyond the bar and into the community too! They host a yearly anniversary celebration event, where they partner with philanthropic organizations to raise money for various causes, like the Surfrider Foundation, and Fight ALD. Stone is a brewery that promotes community and unity, and if that’s your taste, head to any of the Stone outposts and support their brewery! SECOND CHANCE BEER COMPANY Started by San Diego locals, this beer company has a lot to offer. Their main location in Carmel Mountain is truly enormous, complete with multiple areas to sit and sip their various brews. They offer beer flights for the indecisive folks, offering a few tasting-size glasses of beers, so you can try a little bit of everything. Can’t find a babysitter for International Beer Day? Don’t sweat it! There’s a kids corner of the warehouse complete with books and fun games to keep your kids occupied while you enjoy your beer nearby. Second Chance attracts crowds of beer-lovers each week with their tasty flavors, fun trivia nights, and gourmet food from food trucks outside. KARL STRAUSS Karl Strauss has multiple locations; they can be restaurants, tasting rooms, or beer gardens. The Nicole Frank Collection Breathing life and style into timeless classics, Nicole Frank: The Wardrobe Evolution–the eponymous women’s fashion brand of Nicole Frank, stitches together a narrative of versatility, luxury, and pragmatism. The end result is a look that takes you from day to night, and everywhere in between–without sacrificing great fashion. Join us in celebrating the brand’s one-year anniversary since their launch last fall, along with an exclusive one-on-one with Nicole, herself.

mid cooler climes, pumpkin spice lattes, and the warm October skies of a Pacific sunset, autumn greets us once again with great fanfare and anticipation. After all, our much beloved fall fashions have finally arrived. From herringbone, houndstooth, and plaid, to textured knits and faux fur, denim, blazers, animal prints, and even western and vintage details, this year’s trends boast familiar colors, iconic patterns, and the ever-favored layering effect as well. Notably, fashion houses and labels worldwide have begun spotlighting the talents and tenacity of strong women designers; thus, promoting equity, equality, and efficacy as fashionable in the process. Without a doubt, San Diego is home to a robust and emergent fashion scene, recently landing America’s Finest City as a Top 10 ‘Most Stylish’ city in the U.S. with an impressive repertoire of female designers. Needing no introduction, Nicole Frank, a native San Diegan and renaissance woman of sorts, was inspired by her real-life experiences in the launch of Nicole Frank–The Wardrobe Evolution. As a designer, her appeal has captured the attention and loyal following of 20-somethings to those in their 60s–ultimately desiring for women to feel comfortable, yet fashionable while meeting the demands of an active and ever-changing lifestyle. The result: a highly touted collection that features classic wardrobe pieces with the versatility of added accessories or zip-on sleeves, collars, and hems. “It was out of necessity,” states Nicole, discussing the spark that ignited the designs for her brand. “When I was working in real estate and being a mom, I didn’t have time to come home and change between work, meetings, dinners, or events with my daughter. I ended up putting multiple things in the car [to accommodate] my schedule. I often would wear Lululemon yoga pants paired with a blazer or a blouse, some jewelry and heels. But I always felt like I was wearing workout clothes all day. I just thought there needed to be a line that was easier, smarter, and more sophisticated–something

that was easy to care for, changeable, and versatile to fit my lifestyle. I did a lot of research and couldn’t find anything that worked. That’s why The Wardrobe Evolution represents the modern evolution of the modern woman–a constant progression of women’s roles in society and the fashion that evolves with it. [After all], fashion is empowering.” Beginning with several wardrobe basics, Nicole’s line features a number of jumpsuits, pants, tops, skirts, and dresses that are surprisingly interchangeable depending on the look you desire. Available in white, black, taupe, denim, and rose, these pieces afford classic lines and a perfectly tailored fit using high quality, high performance, nylon and elastane fabrics sourced from Switzerland and produced in Los Angeles. “The fabric is truly flattering to your figure with a high-performance edge,” states Nicole. “It doesn’t hold moisture, is stain and odor resistant and machine washable, and most of all, it’s comfortable to wear because it’s a four-way stretch. Recently, I accidently spilled red wine on my Alexis white pants, and immediately thought ‘this is the true test.’ But it simply rolled right off–no smears, no stains, as if it never happened.”
Beyond the fabric, Nicole’s design savvy really comes to play with a variety of accessories and zip-on sleeves and collars–which can immediately change the look, tone, and style of any piece, becoming edgy, trendy, cute, flirty, chic, sexy, or even personal. Seemingly simple, the idea is truly revolutionary. Whether it be a bell, puff, or long sleeve, a tweed or faux fur collar, or even an interchangeable dress hem, basic wardrobe staples are reimagined into fashionable and trendy styles. New, limited edition accessories, sleeves, and collars are added monthly, comprising of silk, cashmere, lace, fur, and even leather designs. Gaining her inspiration from the world around, Nicole often looks to art, architecture, nature, and even the past to fuel her designs. She cites Coco Chanel as a classic muse, having always admired her aesthetic and design genius. But even more so, credits the influence of family–having been raised alongside strong women in fashion, modeling, and film. “I have a lot of creative women in my family. And I’ve always loved fashion and interior design,” she notes. “I love the styles from the 60s and 70s–which is where I find a lot

of inspiration. The designs and silhouettes are chic, tailored, and polished. Likening the impact of Charlie’s Angels, I can even remember my first jumpsuit in junior high.” A graduate from the prestigious USC Marshall Business School Entrepreneur Program, she embraced her creativity from an early age–“learning to look at things differently amid different opportunities.” She first began her career designing a line of highly successful children’s handbags that were sold worldwide. From there, she created the ever-so popular landmark LA nightclub, “The Gate” and eventually ventured into real estate investment and design by flipping homes — having earned many accolades and honors along the way. “I was and continue to be driven to learn and explore.” Even though Nicole has much to celebrate in the successful launch of her brand, her reward is hearing and seeing the impact her designs have had on her clientele; not to mention the opportunity in giving back to local charitable organizations as well. “It’s about confidence and freedom for women. And that is most gratifying, for me personally. Most clients remark 44

about the line’s true versatility, or how easy it is to travel with. [Above all], I love the idea of wearing something day to night with the ability to be ready for anything–which is really a common theme [and desire] for women everywhere.” For upcoming events/trunk shows, visit nicolefranktwe.com.
