There’s no single way to describe Seven Hills. But Seven Hills produces a singular outcome: intellectually vibrant, future-ready learners prepared to shape rewarding lives.

C HRI S T O PH E R P. GAR T E N H E AD O F S C H O O L Dear Seven Hills Families and Friends, On behalf of the entire Seven Hills faculty and staff, I want to express our gratitude for what your continuing support of this community has meant to this school in the past year. We are blessed, here at Seven Hills, with students who are eager to learn and grow, students who both support and challenge one another to be their best selves. We are blessed, too, with skilled and dedicated teachers who have devoted their lives to fostering the very best in the young people they serve. We are blessed with school leaders who have engaged the faculty in an ongoing process of continuous improvement. As strong as this school has been, as strong as it is now, we are, as a community, deeply committed to improving our program and preparing our students even more fully for the challenges of an increasingly complex global community. That is why we are so grateful for the full-blooded support this school continues to enjoy from the entire Seven Hills community. Your support of the Seven Hills Fund, our annual fund-raising drive, provides the “margin of excellence. Each year, it supplies the art materials and athletic equipment, the field trips, instructional software, and lab instruments that keep our educational program so rich and so vital. At the same time, over the last five years, the Critical Assets Campaign has added nearly $16 million in pledges to the school’s endowment. These funds have made it possible for us to compete more aggressively in the national marketplace and to attract and retain some of the most talented teachers in the country. They have underwritten a rapid expansion of our professional training program for faculty and staff, including an ambitious curriculum renewal grant program that has produced dozens of new curriculum units on both campuses. Finally, they have made possible a much more ambitious investment in strategic financial aid that has brought to our community a host of deserving students whom we could not otherwise have attracted to this school. Whether we gauge it in athletic successes or college scholarships or in the hundreds of steps forward in skill and in confidence we see in our students every day, the 2010-11 school year has been a great success by any conceivable measure! You are, all of you, a big part of that success, and we are deeply grateful for your support!

Christopher P. Garten Head of School

Dear Friends, This has been a busy and productive year at Seven Hills—not only for our students and their teachers but also for the entire community. Positive word of mouth about the quality of education provided at Seven Hills has been backed by a successful marketing effort. Despite a very competitive school market here in Cincinnati, we’ve seen a surge in admissions from 965 students last year to a projected enrollment of 995 for the upcoming year. Thanks to many of you, we have made significant progress on our Critical Assets Campaign goals. Even with a challenging economy, Seven Hills has received pledges totaling $16 million in additional endowment funds that will be used to improve faculty compensation, provide more need-based awards and scholarships to students, and provide professional development funds to keep our faculty at the leading edge in instructional methods and technologies. We are in sight of our final goal of $17.5 million and anticipate announcing a successful conclusion to the campaign in December, 2011. Most recently, the Board of Trustees and our head of school, Chris Garten, have started the first discussions about how to create the next strategic plan to guide the school forward. Beginning in 2012, we will be engaging the entire Seven Hills community—students, faculty, administration, alumni, parents and loyal friends of the school —in a variety of sessions to explore opportunities and potential challenges in the years ahead. Our Advisory Council has already provided fresh insights into how to shape the future of our school, and we are eager to involve many of you in building an even stronger Seven Hills. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for your strong support of this school. Your contributions make a meaningful difference in the quality of education for our students. With warm appreciation and Stinger spirit,

Jane Garvey C’74 Chair & President, Board of Trustees

the Seven Hills Method This year our annual report presents profiles of six faculty who effectively use the Seven Hills Method of teaching to develop the 21st century skills and habits of mind which prepare students for success in an increasingly complex global community.

We are delighted to share with you the results of many (many!) faculty meetings this past year: The Seven Hills School Method—a distillation of the preK-12 curricular emphases our teachers employ with our students every single day. From fall 2010 through spring 2011, Doherty and Lotspeich teachers met in subject-area groups, and Middle and Upper teachers met in departments to discuss how we teach at Seven Hills and how we encourage the qualities described in the Portrait of a Seven Hills Graduate we published last year. We thought hard about every age, every subject and every skill we teach, and the Faculty drew on its vast experience with, and deep commitment to, our students. The conversations, both philosophical and practical, coalesced around seven general topics, and for each of those topics, we then articulated a specific teaching method. • • • • • • •

6

We We We We We We We

pose engaging questions that foster students’ passion for learning. focus on content that engages students in compelling global issues. design complex tasks that build logic, critical thinking and problem solving skills. structure learning activities that require creativity, independent thought and innovation. design opportunities for meaningful collaboration. craft opportunities for skilled and confident communication in a variety of media. emphasize the use of technological tools for research, analysis, and communication.

Discussions also produced three levels of specific statements: The Faculty agreed on and has stated the teaching methods characteristic of a Seven Hills education. The Faculty has elaborated on the use of each method across a range of academic disciplines and has detailed how those methods should apply to a range of ages and learning styles. • For Lower School, Middle School and Upper School, the Faculty has provided specific examples of assignments, projects and experiences that illustrate each method. Our process has already borne educationally delicious and nutritious fruit—new curriculum units that will serve our students even better. • •

Last year, for example, even as these conversations were ongoing: Social studies at Lotspeich, Doherty and Middle had already begun to take on a far greater global emphasis. Both 9th and 12th grade English at Upper featured new projects designed to expand students’ writing repertoires, making use of wikis, blogs and an exploration of media literacy, on one hand, and complex analytical papers, on another. • At every grade level, teachers incorporated technology uses that are more sophisticated, more purposeful and more currently pertinent into the students’ academic lives. Based on the curriculum grant proposals the School funded in the spring, we know that next year every division will see additional strengthening of our already powerful and contemporary curriculum. • •

In short, the Faculty’s deeply thoughtful attention to the 21st century skills our students will need to succeed in the larger world has continued to produce compelling results. If truth be told, however, that is no surprise. Terrific advances like this always take shape when Seven Hills teachers put their heads together to talk about students and curriculum. 7

The Business Office of The Seven Hills School is responsible for the preparation, integrity and fair presentation of the financial statements and other accounting information in this annual report. The School maintains a system of internal controls over financial reporting, which is designed to provide assurance to the School’s management and Board of Trustees that assets are protected and that transactions and events are recorded properly in the financial statements. The Board of Trustees, through the Finance Committee, comprised of trustees not employed by the School, has adopted an Audit Subcommittee that includes engaging an independent accounting firm, Mellott & Mellott, P.L.L., to ensure that the financial statements are accurately presented. The School has again maintained a balanced budget for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2011. In the strategic effort to maintain the affordability of the School, the administration, faculty and staff continue to find ways to reduce costs while persisting to prioritize teaching and learning. Schoolwide operating efficiencies have been gained by increasing energy conservation, pruning unnecessary administrative positions, rethinking student-faculty ratios and removing under-enrolled programs. The overall financial health of the School was again aided by the growth of the endowment, which provides funding for teacher salaries, financial aid, faculty professional development and distinctive programming and technology. Both annual giving and capital gifts enrich every part of the School. Most importantly, these gifts bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of educating each child.

The Seven Hills School points with pride to the latest endowment report that places our invested assets over $25 million. Following the unfortunate market reversals in 2008-09, the infusion of much-needed new gifts from our Critical Assets Campaign, combined with informed management by our endowment managers and thoughtful oversight by the School’s Investment Committee, chaired currently by Patrick Rogers, has returned our fund to a desirable trajectory.

THE

every mind is a treasure SCHOOL

With an undergraduate degree from the University of Heidelberg in Germany and an MA in American History from Miami University at Oxford, Judith Neidlein-Dial is a dedicated historian. But she doesn’t care, she says, whether her eighth graders know the exact date of an historical event that happened five hundred years ago. She wants them to be able to isolate patterns and recognize cause and effect in history—even in events that are apparently unrelated and separated by vast stretches of time. This year, a case study she had used early in the year on imperialism in Congo became a pertinent topic when violence there flared again. And when a United Nations report on violence and genocide in the Democratic Republic of Congo was released, her classes considered and debated how imperialism had shaped the state of Congo today. She begins by teaching such topics as industrialization, colonialism, facts about how nations have come into being. But that is just the beginning of a rigorous process of independent investigation that turns her students into proficient analysts, adept at sizing up a contemporary event in light of its historical roots. In an interactive project last year, she collaborated with English teacher Linda Maupin to explore William Golding’s dark novel about the morality of social organization, Lord of the Flies, and the two teachers asked their students to assess that novel’s metaphors in light of the rise of Nazism in 20th century Europe. Judith also paired the class with a class of German students to discuss by Internet such issues as whether young Germans feel any collective guilt for their nation’s part in the Nazi aggression. Reading the Golding parable helped students to understand that, as Judith says, “history is about people trying to figure out the best way to organize society.” This summer she has been working on lesson plans to study imperialism as it is reflected in the current economic and political development in Mexico and Brazil. She has designed the project to help students see patterns that emerge, as, for instance, when they compare the problems industrialization caused Great Britain in the 18th century (child labor and environmental pollution) with problems that have emerged in China as it has industrialized rapidly over the past twenty years. Clearly her students are likely to feel perfectly comfortable tackling (with both hindsight and insight) the problems they will face when they join the adult global society—a mere eight years from now.

Critical Assets Campaign Providing the kind of education we commit to delivering at Seven Hills isn’t easy. And it’s expensive. It requires more teachers per student to ensure small classes; impeccably qualified teachers – who have their pick of the job market – to inspire learning; a rich, complex array of academic courses to stimulate minds; scholarship and financial aid assistance to attract students who enrich our community; and a full range of performing arts and athletic offerings to educate the whole person. For many years tuition revenue has been our main source of support – covering nearly 80% of all school expenses from teachers, to financial aid, to utilities. As costs rose, so did tuition. In 2006, the School’s trustees recognized the need to change this model. They saw that increasing non-tuition revenue from endowment and annual giving would be the best way to relieve our dependence on tuition and maintain the breadth and depth of the program while preventing drastic increases in tuition and fees. Last October, the School publicly launched its $17.5 million Critical Assets Campaign designed to strengthen the School’s ability, over the long-term, to compensate its faculty on a par with those schools with whom we compete for personnel, to attract and retain the very best students, and to keep the rich array of academic offerings while introducing the latest instructional technology to support its delivery.

C a m p a i g n I m p a cts Tuition Increases Continue To Diminish

Merit Scholarships Gain Momentum

Additional investments in our merit scholars program continue to yield dividends for Seven Hills in the form of 43 new students. For the first time, modest grants will be offered selectively to incoming students at Doherty and Lotspeich. Combined with investments made to Financial Aid, nearly $400,000 has been added to the School’s budget to both attract and retain students who make this a diverse and academically vigorous learning community.

C RI T I C AL A S S E T S

A growing endowment enables Seven Hills to draw more dollars into its operating budget each year, resulting in far more manageable tuition increases – in the past year, the Board of Trustees voted a tuition increase of only 2.9%, the lowest ever.

Faculty Salaries on the Rise

As our campaign enters its “home stretch,” and given the ongoing investment via Critical Assets, our salary objectives as originally defined are now within reach. $7,635,000 in cash has been added to the salary pool, fueling an approximate 4% increase in compensation beyond what tuition alone might have provided - a key factor both in retaining the best teachers, and in competing in the open market for the “stars” of the future.

Curriculum Enhancements Proliferate

Nearly 60 summer grants to faculty have resulted in wide-ranging and exciting curriculum development that touches students in all divisions. Our goal is to seek additional funding in this area to sustain this momentum indefinitely.

THE

big picture, whole child SCHOOL

There’s a small part of every instrumental concert at Middle and Upper that isn’t as rehearsed as the rest of the program, and “there are reasons for that,” says teacher John Rising. “When things are still a bit ‘raw,’ everyone really needs to concentrate and work together, and it injects real energy into the piece. I know the kids can do it. “After the concert, the kids say, ‘Wow, I can’t believe that worked out so well. We really did it.‘ Then the kids really get that feeling.” That feeling—students’ “feeling really, really good about themselves as individuals and as an ensemble—is the beginning of true confidence,” says John, and it starts when the student comes to his first Instrumental Music class. “I always hit home the message that what we’re doing is very long term, and this is something that I want them to do their whole life. What we’re doing here is taking baby steps on a life journey.” “Students likely won’t master an instrument as a sixth grader, but they will learn discipline. When you become disciplined with your practice and playing, you start to feel really good about that. Once kids feel good about their experience, we start to build the steps of true confidence. Watching his students transform from beginning musicians to confident performers or from individuals to a cohesive ensemble means ”huge breakthrough moments that I get to experience every day,” says John. Those moments—those successes—resonate in every part of a student’s life. “You have a middle schooler who might be very shy, and maybe through singing or playing an instrument or visual art or drama, he finds his ‘voice.’ When I go to parent meetings and find out that he’s struggling in school with grades or discipline, my shining moment is telling the parents, ‘That may all be true, but when he is playing music, he is completely rocking!’” A lifelong musician with a level of mastery on most instruments, John went to graduate school in music performance, played bassoon with professional orchestras, and did a great deal of orchestral conducting. “I found that the missing element for me was working with kids. Kids have so much raw energy and enthusiasm, and they just want to go for it. That’s what really gets my adrenalin off the charts!” Another adrenalin rush for John comes with working with high school musicians. “When you have high school students who are absolutely wailing musicians who have turned their lives to music, it becomes less of a teacher-student relationship for me. It’s probably 90% collaborative and 10% instructional. We get in artistic disputes about how something should be done. It’s a matter of listening to young adults who have such great ideas and figuring out together how we’re going to make it work.” John likens preparing for a concert to preparing for a championship game, and his musicians share his excitement. A concert performance culminates hours of hard work and rehearsals. After a successful concert, the musicians’ feeling of shared accomplishment and confidence is the culmination of steps that started when they first picked up their instruments at the beginning of their lifelong journey.

Sara Snyder, Lotspeich fourth grade teacher, embodies both the venerable traditions of the School and the spirit of the young, innovative and energetic faculty who are now in the ascendancy at Seven Hills. Sara began her career at Doherty doing her student teaching, but she had worked as a counselor at the School’s summer camp for seven years before she began to teach, and she and her husband, John (Seven Hills Class of 1996), met as Seven Hills summer camp counselors. Now, ten years into teaching fourth grade at Lotspeich, she has just seen her first students graduate from the Upper School —Class of 2011. She is a strong proponent of independent learning. The important thing, she tells her math students, is not the answer, but how you get to the answer. In her social studies teaching, a project on immigration leads her fourth graders to investigate a major public policy issue—and see both its history and impact from a contemporary perspective. At first, the assignment sends them to investigate Ellis Island and Angel Island, those gateways to immigrants in the 19th and early 20th centuries. That process raises the issue of information literacy. Can they trust the source they find? Is it fair and unbiased? What about the history of their own families? To find out how the immigration process works now and how it affects immigrants, they work as teams to investigate the languages and cultures of their subjects, their countries. And, in small groups, they compare times and places of migration and then investigate their own heritage individually. These collaborative efforts lead them by deductive reasoning to understand the political and economic realities of countries and their peoples.

THE

It lights up his face SCHOOL

In another project—Living Biographies—that has been a staple of the fourth grade curriculum, students choose an historical figure to study and “become.” To get the subject of their choice, they have to offer (in essay form) three alternatives, with researched support. They will eventually be awarded one of the choices, but in the process, they learn to take notes and synthesize information, and they learn how to mount a supported argument. They research their characters further, they create a costume, and finally they make a presentation to the class, in costume. They learn about history and customs and fashions, and into the bargain, they learn how to make a public speech. Seven Hills students are secure, says Sara. They are willing to find out for themselves and risk discomfort, or being wrong, for the reward of learning. That is a powerful paradigm for education in the world of the 21st century.

THE

ready for all that lies ahead SCHOOL

Tracy Hickenlooper, who taught in the California public school system before she arrived at Doherty 17 years ago, knew from the outset that she wanted to be at this school, using the creative techniques that characterize Doherty’s classrooms. Tracy has been an early adopter of all sorts of new classroom technologies. She speaks enthusiastically about Mimio, a device that allows students to put responses and ideas onto the board from their laptops, at their seats. The system, she says, can generate an electronic conversation: a student can work a math problem at her seat, then project it onto the board. Because the technology is friendly, students love it, she says, and want to participate in the lesson. Moreover, the device can enable students to launch onto the Internet but come back to share what they have found on the teacher’s board for everybody to see and can even generate a PowerPoint for presentation of the information gathered. For a literature assignment, students can “travel” from Doherty to see a fishing village like the one that is the book’s setting. She “sends” her classes on Google Lit trips and says they also love to use Google Earth to trace the geographical settings of the fictional works and the places they are reading about. Planning for next year, she has designed a new unit that focuses on the influence of the Spice Trade in the discovery of the Americas, the development of the Stock Market, advances in food and medicines, and the impact of that trade on the world today. As she has planned the unit, student groups will be assigned an imaginary country and challenged to figure out how to increase their country’s trade in a lagging economy. She anticipates that when students “use technology for research, data gathering, analysis and communication,” they will be using creative and critical problem solving to “set up their trade agreements and math skills to graph and chart information as they learn about the stock market.” To carry out daily tasks, she expects them to use wikis, blogs, Webquests and videos. And finally, she envisions that her students will work collaboratively to compile one online portfolio that reflects the impact of the Spice Trade and that will culminate in an understanding of the interactive forces of trade and science and technology over several centuries. Another project now in the planning stage will study the recent revolutionary events in Egypt and note similarities to the American Revolution. Students will research the two events and develop a video newscast or a newspaper to explain the causes and outcomes of the two revolutions. Tracy’s classrooms are rich in content, and timely. Her lessons are constructed to foster independent research, support the natural curiosity of her students and prepare them to find out for themselves what they will need to know and how they will need to present what they have learned in the rapidly developing technological world of their future.

widen your world SCHOOL

What is the ideal role of government? What is the proper balance between national security and civil liberties? These are among the “big idea” questions that are challenging national leaders, political scientists, and the juniors in Beth Driehaus’ U.S. History classes. Beth posts 10 to 15 “big idea” questions around her classroom at the start of the school year. Each student chooses one question about which to form an opinion over the course of the year, drawing on material studied in class. In May, students answer their question in fiveminute oral presentations, citing at least three historical and two contemporary examples to support their thesis. The presenters’ answers to their “big idea” questions reveal big thinking that sometimes surprises and always impresses their fellow students and their teacher. One student addressed “The History of the Immigration Debate in the U.S.” from the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 to the Georgia Immigration Law of 2011, with a rap and video! Citing another impressive example of a student who chose the question of government’s proper role, Beth says, “I think this is a sophisticated thesis for a sixteen year old: ‘The U.S. government has shown over its short but productive history that it naturally grows until its role is too great, whereby its citizens and their representatives take the necessary actions to make sure it is ‘just right.’” His thesis on America’s ability to self-correct was well supported with oral and PowerPoint presentations. “It’s very important to me that students take what they learn in my class and apply it in a meaningful way to their larger world,” says Beth. “It’s far less important to me that they can tell me the minutiae of the Louisiana Purchase than it is that they can discuss the nature of Executive Power and the limits of the Constitution, using the Louisiana Purchase as an example.” Another assignment Beth has designed to build critical thinking and problem solving skills is a group project that links the unit on historical slavery with the challenge to find a solution to contemporary slavery. Beth says, “That’s hard! If you have a solution to modern day slavery, here’s your Nobel Prize! But just the attempt is important, and they did come up with viable ways to chip away at this ubiquitous system.” Another “big idea” project is the Constitution Fair. “Students produce pamphlets presenting pros and cons on making certain issues Constitutional amendments. After discussion, the students vote on whether or not these issues should be amendments. “The students are respectful of each other’s differing opinions. They understand that being wedded to their own ideas doesn’t mean they have the right to impose them on others,” says Beth. “It’s part of the intellectual enterprise. It’s part of what helps to form thoughtful people.”

THE

lets explore this together SCHOOL

From the time students walk into Linda Ford’s chemistry laboratory, they develop a questioning attitude. “This is the gift that all science teachers should give their students,” she says. This laboratory “presence of mind” means constantly evaluating the components, effectiveness, and safety of lab procedures. “Those are questions that scientists ask themselves all the time, but students are only going to begin to ask those questions internally if given the opportunity by the teacher. So the teacher has to shut up, give them tasks that are doable with our equipment in our time frame and in our laboratory. And then let kids have at it.” “When students walk into my lab, it’s with a sense of confidence,” she continues. “They bring a different level of patience than they may exercise outside of my classroom, because good laboratory work requires patience. It requires the ability to think on your feet so that when you have a problem, you can solve it quickly, so it doesn’t destroy all the work you’ve already done. It’s being able to take your small defeats and say, okay, I learned from that negative result. Now I have to move forward and try to figure out how to get more positive results.” Developing a questioning attitude isn’t a gift Linda’s students develop or use alone. Collaboration is equally important as the questioning and assessing in the laboratory approach to problem solving. Linda’s students work with different assigned partners through the year, so every student works with every other student in the lab. Linda’s Airbag Experiment is a good example of collaboration. “The point is to try to inflate a Ziploc® bag as fast and as full as possible, so it will support a chemistry textbook on top of it for a certain time. They use baking soda and their choice of hydrochloric or acetic acid.” Many variables need to be determined and tested, as students work together to bring their chemistry knowledge and ideas to the experiment. “That collaborative aspect needs to come very early in science education, and I do that with strong intent. I’ve spent 40 years in the classroom, and I didn’t do it by the seat of my pants. I did it with absolute intent of the outcomes I want for my students. “As I walk from table to table during their labs, I’m watching how well the students are working together as a unit, and I am always impressed with the kids I teach. I’m impressed with their ability to work well together and stay on task and appreciate each other’s contributions. It’s very important that they can cheerlead for one another and understand that it’s an accomplishment that they are sharing.”
