Dear Seven Hills Families and Friends, On behalf of the students, faculty and staff of Seven Hills, it is my privilege to thank all of you for the impact your generosity has had on this school. As Jane Garvey indicates in her letter, this is a very exciting time in the history of the School. Under Jane’s leadership and with the support of the entire Seven Hills community, we have now accomplished the principal goals of the Strategic Plan of 2008. Because of your generosity and commitment, Seven Hills now has more resources to maintain the excellence of the teaching faculty, both by contending competitively in the national marketplace and by supporting ongoing professional training and curriculum innovation for our faculty. We have also begun to secure the resources we need to sustain the socioeconomic and ethnic diversity of our student population. With these achievements behind us, we have begun charting our course for the next five years. Under the leadership of our new Board Chair, Sarah Steinman, and Strategic Planning Co-chairs, Shannon Carter (H’67) and Beth Schiff, the Board of Trustees is beginning to identify our new strategic priorities. Though it is still early, our focus groups have already framed several interesting strategic questions: Faculty Excellence What additional steps will we have to take to ensure the continuing excellence of the Seven Hills faculty? Affordability and Access In light of shifting demographics, what is the optimal sustainable enrollment in each division? How do we maintain the robust array of programs without pricing ourselves out of a competitive market? Future-focused Learning What is the ideal balance between traditional and new pedagogies (inquiry, project-based learning, instructional technology) to prepare our students to thrive in an increasingly complex global community? Real World Learning Should Seven Hills seek to provide a wider array of opportunities for students to learn through direct experience of the world? Individuation To what extent should we broaden even further opportunities for students to develop individual talents and interests? Facilities In what program areas is Seven Hills’ educational mission constrained by facilities needs? Which of these needs are the most pressing? These are, of course, complex questions, and I’m certain other issues will arise as we go forward. The Board is fully committed to working through these issues and adopting a new Strategic Plan by May, 2013. We are truly fortunate to be part of a community so deeply committed to a process of continuous improvement. Allow me to thank you for all you continue to do to sustain the growth of this fine school.

Dear Friends, As I near the end of a three-year term as Board Chair, I am reflecting on how far we have come in the last few years! Guided by a Strategic Plan developed five years ago under the stewardship of former Board Chair Jim Schiff, the Board has worked with the entire school community to bring that ambitious vision to fruition. Within a tough economic environment, Seven Hills has wisely focused on our long-term financial sustainability. Under the leadership of our new Head of School, Chris Garten, Seven Hills has worked hard both to effectively meet the needs of our current students and families while marketing our school more effectively to the broader community. As a result of these efforts, our student retention rate has climbed to 95%, among the highest in the nation. Even in a highly competitive school market, strong “word of mouth” has generated increased demand, particularly in the upper grades. Middle School enrollment has grown from 191 to 245 in just three years; and the Upper School has enrolled the largest number of new freshmen in the School’s history. At the same time, the administrative staff continues to explore ways to operate more cost effectively, looking for efficiencies wherever possible. During the same timeframe, we have seen a huge step forward in the School’s commitment to educational innovation and exemplary teaching. Thanks to the successful completion of The Critical Assets Campaign, Seven Hills has secured the resources to increase faculty compensation to 88% of the median for our benchmark schools in the Midwest. We have also doubled the funds available for professional development and funded an ambitious new program to provide over 70 curriculum development grants to teachers. Your support of these efforts has fueled an explosion of creativity among the faculty: a new commitment to interdisciplinary and inquiry-based learning, more extensive use of instructional technology (including a revolutionary iPad program), a greater focus on contemporary global issues and on practical, experiential learning. Our students thrive in this environment. Finally, mindful of our long-standing commitment to serve as diverse a population as possible, we have worked very hard both to increase the funds available for financial assistance and to deploy them as strategically as possible. It is a special pleasure to welcome and congratulate Sarah Steinman, who succeeds me as Chair of the Board. I am grateful to all of you who have done so much to help move Seven Hills forward these past three years. Like you, I am excited to continue to support such a great school in the years ahead.

FINANCIAL REPORT
FINANCIAL REPORT The Business Office of The Seven Hills School is responsible for the preparation, integrity and fair presentation of the financial statements and other accounting information in this annual report. The School maintains a system of internal controls over financial reporting, which is designed to provide assurance to the School’s management and Board of Trustees that assets are protected and that transactions and events are recorded properly in the financial statements. The Board of Trustees, through the Finance Committee, comprised of trustees not employed by the School, has adopted an Audit Subcommittee that includes engaging an independent accounting firm, Mellott & Mellott, P.L.L., to ensure that the financial statements are accurately presented. The School has again maintained a balanced budget for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2012. In the strategic effort to maintain the affordability of the School, the administration, faculty and staff continue to find ways to reduce costs while persisting to prioritize teaching and learning. Schoolwide operating efficiencies have been gained by increasing energy conservation, pruning unnecessary administrative positions, rethinking student-faculty ratios and removing under-enrolled programs. The overall financial health of the School was again aided by the growth of the endowment, which provides funding for teacher salaries, financial aid, faculty professional development and distinctive programming and technology. Both annual giving and capital gifts enrich every part of the School. Most importantly, these gifts bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of educating each child.

YEAR IN REVIEW The Seven Hills School points with pride to the latest endowment report that places our invested assets over $25 million. Following the unfortunate market reversals in 2008-09, the infusion of much-needed new gifts from our Critical Assets Campaign, combined with informed management by our endowment managers and thoughtful oversight by the School’s Endowment Committee, currently chaired by Patrick Rogers, has returned our fund to a desirable trajectory.

CRITIC A s we begin the new school year, we are pleased to celebrate the significant strides our school made last school year along our journey to develop in our students the 21st century skills and intellectual habits that prepare them for success in a complex global community. These strides were strongly supported by the unwavering commitment and dedicated stewardship of members of our school community, and we are deeply grateful. In our 2011-2012 Annual Report, we are especially celebrating the great success of the five-year Critical Assets Campaign, which concluded in December, 2011, adding more than $17.6 million to the School’s endowment.
THE
These funds have made it possible for our school to compete more aggressively in the national marketplace, attracting and retaining some of the most talented teachers in the country. These new members of our faculty are ensuring the tradition of teaching excellence that is a hallmark of our school. The Campaign funds have underwritten a significant expansion of our professional development program for faculty and staff, including an exciting curriculum renewal grant program that has enabled our MILLION creative and talented teachers to design dozens of exciting new curriculum units. Finally, The Critical Assets Campaign has made possible a much more ambitious investment in strategic financial aid that has brought to our community a host of deserving students whom we could not otherwise have attracted to this school. The diversity of backgrounds and points of view resulting from these increased financial aid scholarships has greatly enriched the Seven Hills educational experience for all of our students.
Critical Assets Campaign
adds over $1 7 .6 to School’s E N D O W M E N T
Head of School Chris Garten said, “On behalf of our faculty and staff and of the children of this community, I want to thank all who have helped make this possible. Special thanks to our last two Board Chairs, Jim Schiff, whose visionary leadership inspired this ambitious effort, focused, so appropriately, on building the School’s endowment, and to Jane Garvey, who led an army of committed volunteers across the finish line.” The Critical Assets Campaign is having a powerful impact on our teachers and students in four major areas, including Endowment for Faculty Salaries, Endowment for Professional Development, Endowment for Curricular Innovation, and Endowment for Financial Aid. We are sharing in this annual report a few examples of the critical difference your generous and visionary support has meant for our school, our students and teachers.

Thank you for helping to enrich our students’ education every day!
