Dear Seven Hills Community,
On behalf of our students and their families and our entire faculty and staff, I want to thank you for your support during the 2021-22 school year. In spite of the challenges we faced, this was another remarkably successful year for Seven Hills.
ACADEMIC RECOGNITION AND COLLEGE ADMISSIONS
Again last fall, Niche.com named Seven Hills as one of the Best College Private Preparatory Schools in Ohio (#2 in the state) and, for the third year in a row, the Best Private School in Cincinnati. This recognition was based on a robust analysis of college admissions results, standardized testing including Advanced Placement, SAT and ACT tests, and feedback from families.
Moreover, our students have continued to distinguish themselves by every conceivable measure. Over 150 students took a total of 354 AP tests, with 92% achieving college-credit-granting scores of three or above. In addition, 102 students were named Advanced Placement Scholars. And, during one of the most competitive years ever in college admissions, our 90 graduating seniors have earned admission to an impressive array of colleges and universities.
STRATEGIC PROGRAM INITIATIVES
In spite of the challenges the pandemic has brought, the Board, administrative team, and faculty and staff have continued to work on some of the many program initiatives enumerated in the Strategic Plan of 2019. In this, year three of our five-year plan, we enhanced several key programs:
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)
In the last three years, we have made significant investments in Doherty’s Creation Studio; Lotspeich’s Project Math program; the Middle School’s Innovation Lab and coding electives; and the Upper School’s vast array of elective courses in science, mathematics, computer science, and engineering. For 202223, we will add a director of instructional technology to guide teachers and students in all four divisions, add a dedicated science specialist at Doherty and pilot a new Lower School science curriculum, add a full-time math support role at Lotspeich, and offer a new Upper School elective called Advanced Topics in Computer Science.
Health and Wellness
To supplement existing programs in developmental guidance, learning support, college counseling, and social emotional learning, we began a new relationship, through MindPeace, to provide students with on-campus access to licensed mental health providers. In 2022-23, we will add a second full-time school guidance counselor to work with Upper School students and a part-time registrar to free up more time for the college counseling team to work with students and their families.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Led by Racheal Quinn, our new director of diversity, equity, and inclusion, we have made significant progress in executing our Strategic Plan for DEI. Recent efforts have focused on enrolling a diverse

student body; engaging student leaders in sustaining a safe, supportive, and inclusive school culture; attracting a faculty that aligns more closely with the diversity of the student body; training teachers to respond to a wide range of learning styles and to use inclusive, culturally responsive pedagogies; exposing students to a varied, multicultural curriculum; and deepening students’ understanding of the world and their commitment to social justice, responsible citizenship, and service to others.
Civic Engagement and Global Awareness
Recent curriculum grants have funded new instructional units on contemporary and global topics in language arts and social studies; new elective courses in social studies, economics, and environmental studies; and a broader array of world language and travel programs. In 2022-23, the Middle School will launch a new, four-day Civic Engagement field trip to Washington D.C., and the Upper School will expand the Civic Engagement Seminars and offer new semester electives in African-American and Gender Studies.
Athletics and Fine and Performing Arts Programs
We continue to exploit the potential of both The Schiff Center, to mount large-scale theatrical productions, and the new Field House, to offer a wider array of athletic events. We introduced a new school-wide performance called Arts Alive! as well as a pilot program in competitive squash.
In short, 2021-22 has been a busy and productive year, and the school we all love is in extremely strong shape.
As always, I appreciate, more than I can adequately express, the confidence you have expressed in our leadership team, our faculty and staff, and in our students. Working together, we have surmounted some significant challenges and have emerged from them in an even stronger position.
On behalf of the faculty and staff and of all of our students, I am grateful for your active interest and continuing involvement in Seven Hills. You are a big part of all we have achieved!
Christopher P. Garten Head of School Warmly,Dear Seven Hills Families and Friends,
At the close of my second year as Board Chair, I am thrilled to report that, even at this time of considerable uncertainty in the economy and in education, Seven Hills remains in a very strong position.
Surging Enrollment
Thanks, in large part, to the school’s success in navigating the challenges of the pandemic, enrollment has grown by more than 60 students over the last three years. In fact, we expect to open the 2022-23 school year with 1,060 students, the highest enrollment since 2004. Moreover, the student retention rate has surged from 92% to 96%, one of the best in the nation, and tangible evidence of the outstanding work by our faculty. We are experiencing especially strong demand in our early childhood and Lower School programs and among families from diverse backgrounds, who now make up over 40% of our student population.
Secure Financial Position
Because of this surge in enrollment, as well as our robust fundraising program and prudent financial management by the Business Office, Seven Hills enjoys an enviably strong financial position. The endowment has grown to over $40 million as has the net value of the physical plant. The school has virtually no debt and very healthy reserve funds. We are, therefore, well positioned to weather the financial downturn that many predict is looming.
Faculty Recruitment and Retention
In anticipation of the huge nation-wide wave of teacher retirements expected by many experts, Seven Hills has invested proactively in compensation and benefits. This spring, the Board adopted a new salary benchmark: to move faculty salaries to the top quintile, when adjusted for cost-of-living, of INDEX schools, a group that includes most of the top independent schools in the country. Because of the school’s warm school culture and supportive families, Seven Hills continues to be a very attractive destination for teachers, and now, with this latest commitment to competitive compensation, we are even better positioned to thrive in an increasingly challenging job market.
Facilities Enhancements
Over the last six years, Seven Hills has invested more than $40 million in facilities, transforming our campuses by adding 100,000 square feet of new space. The Board has invested these funds strategically, in key areas, where they can have the greatest impact. As part of our effort to feed enrollment from below, we built the Taft Early Childhood Center and made extensive renovations to Jones and Haile Halls on the Doherty Campus and to the Lotspeich building on the Hillsdale Campus.
This spring, we opened a fabulous new Middle School facility. In addition, we have made strategic investments to support several key program areas: the fine and performing arts (with the new 500-seat Schiff Center and extensive renovations to the Donovan Art Center); athletics (with the Lower Fields complex, a new four-court Field House, and 10 new tennis courts); and social spaces (with renovations to the Founders Hall and Doherty cafeterias, and the Hillsdale Commons.) Less visible, but equally impactful, has been a major investment in instructional technology, approximately $1.5 million, to support an installed base of 1,200 iPads and laptops and an extensive campus network.
On behalf of the Board, I want to express our abiding gratitude for your loyalty and support. What a privilege it is to be part of a community so deeply invested in continuous improvement. Seven Hills is in great shape, and we have gotten there by working together. Many thanks for all you have done!
Sincerely, Stephen J. Baggott Chair, Board of TrusteesTRUSTEES

For in as a community and
We created scalable start-ups we pitched to local business owners, analyzed our role as global citizens, and formed the Equity and Inclusion Council. We crafted entire universes, showcased our unique voices in novels, poetry, and short stories through our written word. We produced performances with captivating stage designs, transformative musical numbers, and show-stopping casts and crews. We formed teams that raced for gold and celebrated each hard-earned goal, together.
It was a year full of learning, excitement, and amazement, with new opportunities to grow as a community.
Our Lower School students engineered robots, facilitated a fully functioning arcade extravaganza, and “journeyed” to beautiful Costa Rica. Our Middle School students strengthened their community bonds inside the newly built and renovated Middle School building, and cared for their local and global community by raising over $22,000 for The Caring Place and running the aid for Ukraine donation drive. Our Upper School
students debated as great world leaders, investigated crime during English class, and programmed robotic vehicles.
We strengthened our friendships and ignited conversations to make way for new ones. We pushed each other to achieve our best and step outside our comfort zone. We listened, mentored, and assisted. Our discoveries informed our ingenuity and our creativity improved our world and aided our communities.
And as all of these hard-fought rewarding achievements unfolded over the 174 days of Seven Hills’ 2021-22 academic year, our students, teachers, friends, peers, and families encouraged and supported us. In 174 days, we did all of these things.
And we did them, together.
In the stories found throughout this Annual Report, we invite you to reflect with us, and reminisce on some of the highlights of the challenging and rewarding 2021-22 school year.
2021-22, w e grew flourished as people.
The Business Office of The Seven Hills School is responsible for the preparation, integrity, and fair presentation of the financial statements and other accounting information in this annual report.
The school maintains a system of internal controls over financial reporting, which are designed to provide assurance to the school’s management and Board of Trustees that assets are protected and that transactions and events are recorded properly in the financial statements.
The Board of Trustees, through the Finance Committee, comprised of trustees not employed by the school, has adopted an Audit Subcommittee whose duties include engaging an independent accounting firm, Mellott & Mellott, P.L.L., to ensure that the financial statements are accurately presented.
The school has again maintained a balanced budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2022. In the strategic effort to maintain the affordability of the school, the administration, faculty, and staff continue to find ways to reduce costs while persisting to prioritize teaching and learning.
Schoolwide operating efficiencies have been gained by increasing energy conservation, pruning unnecessary administrative positions, rethinking student-faculty ratios, and removing under-enrolled programs.
The overall financial health of the school was again aided by the growth of the endowment, which provides funding for teacher salaries, financial aid, faculty professional development, and distinctive programming and technology.
Both annual giving and capital gifts enrich every part of the school. Most importantly, these gifts bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of educating each child.
EXPENSES
The Seven Hills School points with pride to the latest endowment report that places our invested assets over $42 million. The infusion of new gifts combined with professional portfolio management, and thoughtful leadership by the school’s Investment Committee, chaired in 2021-22 by Nolan Bean, continues to produce desirable returns.
174 Days Growing: Academic Excellence
GLOBALLY, COLLABORATIVELY, CONFIDENTLY
From August 2021 to June 2022, our students and faculty have shown and achieved academic excellence. We have learned the importance of global citizenship, shared our knowledge with our fellow students, completed interdisciplinary projects, and connected with other cultures.
STUDYING STEAM AND TEACHING OTHERS
Lower and Middle School students came together for an afternoon of STEAM activities at the Seven Hills Lower School STEAM Event. Middle School students demonstrated what they have learned by manning stations throughout the Doherty Campus and teaching Doherty and Lotspeich students about magnetism, how the eye works, polarity, and more.
today,” Waskowitz said. “We plan to examine these issues with our students early on, in an apolitical, fact-based learning environment.”
LEARNING TO BE GLOBAL CITIZENS IN IT’S YOUR WORLD
Head of Middle School Bill Waskowitz, writing teacher Chris Caldemeyer, and librarian Megan Whitt launched the newly designed It’s Your World class for the 2021-22 school year and beyond. The course aims to expose students each quarter to a different global issue, such as migration, climate change, social justice, and global health.
“I really felt the need for students to delve into civic engagement and discuss the issues we’re facing
Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the sixth grade It’s Your World class organized a school-wide item drive for those affected. “It’s an incredibly tough situation, and I’m immensely proud of our sixth graders for rallying the Seven Hills School community together to help send much-needed supplies,” Waskowitz said.
EXPLORING AND CONNECTING WITH OTHER CULTURES
Costa Rica came to the Doherty Campus for the annual Cultural Connections Week. Haile Hall was transformed into the seven provinces of Costa Rica. The kindergarteners converted their hallway into the rainforest of Arenal Hanging Bridge Park in La Fortuna, Costa Rica. They also formed the ocean and beaches of the Guanacaste Region.
Pre-kindergarten for 2-year-olds had a visit from a pilot, who taught them about planes and flying earlier in March. In Unit I, students learned about the different layers of the rainforest in Costa Rica and what plants and animals live there. They each chose an animal to write a nonfiction book about.
They also read a letter from a student in Costa Rica and discussed how her life is similar and different from theirs. Unit III students studied the ecosystem of Costa Rica and learned about its environmental protection efforts.
COMBINING RESEARCH, WRITING, AND DEBATE TO PORTRAY HISTORICAL FIGURES
For their final language arts project, fifth graders in Lotspeich teacher Danielle Levine’s class researched and wrote informational essays about different Greek characters to hopefully win a place in the Greek Mythology Hall of Fame. Students also crafted in-character speeches on behalf of the god or goddess they selected.
“The goal was to prove to their classmates that they were the wisest, fastest, coolest, and the most noble character in Ancient Greece and deserved a place in the Greek Mythology Hall of Fame,” Levine said.
At Doherty, Unit III shared their “create your own country” projects, which combined what they learned in science, social studies, languages arts, and engineering design throughout the year, with the other Doherty students.
Seventh graders from science teacher Kristin Suer’s class researched the solar system and wrote and designed books on their chosen planet. The project culminated with the seventh graders reading the books to kindergarteners and first graders at Doherty.
Upper School students learned about the dedication and hard work it takes to complete a Personal Challenge Project from their peers with two sharing days throughout the year. The halls and classrooms of the Upper School were filled with students explaining their
leader in history and competed in a debate competition as part of the History Department’s annual Tournament of Greatness. The students debated in character with their classmates and answered questions, showing their speech writing skills and their knowledge of their leader and the ones portrayed by their classmates.
LEARNING TOGETHER: STUDENTS AS TEACHERS
Throughout the year, Seven Hills students stepped into the shoes of their teachers to share their knowledge with other students.
projects which included building a car, programming Artificial Intelligence, designing a website, and coaching baseball.
A firm foundation of loyal benefactors is essential to the long-term integrity of any institution. The list that follows pays tribute to those individuals and foundations whose dedication to and repeated investments in The Seven Hills School are most responsible for our ongoing success. We are deeply grateful for these enduring friendships.

174 Days Growing: The Counseling Department
the department build out the Middle School program and help identify potential cases for attention.
“We also know that a lot of mental health issues fly under the radar so we wanted to be proactive in getting students connected to any services or help they might need,” Bielecki said.
With the growing size of the student population and the increased need because of the pandemic, Counseling Department Chair Angie Bielecki and the rest of the Seven Hills Counseling Department found numerous avenues for growth and improvement during the 2021-22 school year.
“The pandemic had an impact not only on our physical health but also our emotional and mental health. We expect there to be a ripple effect on students’ emotional and social lives for the next few years. We want to be well equipped to proactively handle that and support our students,” Bielecki said.
The hiring of Dayna Sargent as the new Middle School counselor gave the department a chance to evaluate the services being offered to the Middle Schoolers. They decided to add Terrace Metrics, a researchbased mental health screening instrument that measures a students’ well-being and mental health using 15 resiliency indicators. The assessment helped
Through local organization MindPeace, Seven Hills is part of the Brain Health Network that does research about anxiety and depression in adolescences. MindPeace also connected Seven Hills with Best Points Counseling to provide school-based mental health services. Students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 can now attend therapy on campus during the school day.
The department also added an additional school counselor, Christine Stier for the Upper School because of its growing number of students. Bielecki said her department has worked on growing the mindfulness programs in the Lower Schools and adding a book study to the Creating Conversations Speaker Series. Her department also worked with Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Racheal Quinn to ensure the inclusivity of the social-emotional learning curriculum.
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Whether it was planning a week of activities to reduce stress, bringing therapy dogs to campus, or sharing their appreciation for one another, the Seven Hills students and community found ways to support each other during the year.
Charitable support from Seven Hills parents and families is an essential part of our annual giving program and helps sustain the excellence of the Seven Hills experience. The following list recognizes parent donors organized by their child(ren)’s grade. We thank all of the families who assisted the school in reaching its budgetary obligations for the past academic year.

FRIENDSHIPS, EXPLORING NEW IDEAS, BUILDING THE MIDDLE SCHOOL
The newly constructed and remodeled Middle School was officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony and tour on April 15.
The $9.4 million renovation and expansion increased the Middle School from approximately 22,950 square feet to 35,625 square feet. Classrooms, on average, have expanded an additional 280 square feet, science labs by 150 square feet, and the Innovation Lab by 200 square feet. The additional space enables teachers to incorporate a more diverse variety of activities into their already rich curriculum.
The Middle School also features grade level team and teacher workspaces, larger hallways, common areas for each grade, updated accessible design, and gender neutral restroom facilities.
In just the few short weeks that students and teachers were in the new building before the 2021-22 school year ended, it quickly began to feel like home.
Students could be seen competing in anatomical relay races in their designated commons area, or performing Shakespearean plays and assembling human torsos in their spacious classrooms.
During the daily Fruit Break, students utilize the commons and grade level workspaces to catch up with friends or talk about class work, engaging the Middle School's philosophy of having a "community within a community."
During the ribbon cutting ceremony, Head of School Chris Garten thanked the Seven Hills administration team, Board of Trustees, Director of Development Margo Kirstein, Middle School faculty, and Head of Middle School Bill Waskowitz for seeing the project through to fruition.
“This project has been a 10-year vision for this team to build and renovate our Middle School into a truly remarkable facility. The middle school years are a time in many kids' lives when they may become disaffected about schooling. They are struggling to understand who they are, they can be self-conscious, and frankly, they can be bored with school. One of the things that defines Seven Hills is that doesn’t happen here. If anything, our Middle School is one of the anchors and strengths of this great community,” Garten said.
Waskowitz said the building was designed to provide the best academic and social-emotional opportunities for Middle School students.
Parents of Alumni Donors
Seven Hills is grateful for the generosity of the parents of our alumni. Their continued support beyond their children’s graduation is a powerful expression of confidence in our school and confirms the value of the Seven Hills experience. We are proud to recognize and thank parents of alumni for their continued loyalty and generosity to Seven Hills.

From perfect ACT scores to multiple state titles to writing and arts awards, the 90 members of the Seven Hills Class of 2022 proved their academic, athletic, and artistic talents during their time at Seven Hills. Their hard work and commitment paid off and, with the help of their dedicated college
counselors, they realized their social and academic goals. In individual meetings with their college counselors, students researched college programs, learned how to evaluate which fit them best, worked through every aspect of their applications, and, ultimately, made their best choice.
We are celebrating the completion of this three phased campaign, which included
The Nellie Leaman Taft Early Childhood Center, the Lower Fields Athletic Complex, The Schiff Center, the Field House and Middle School. These projects have transformed the Hillsdale Campus.
Our grateful thanks to the following donors for their generous support.

174 Days Growing: The Fine and Performing Arts Program
CREATING STORIES, CULTIVATING INGENUITY, EXPLORING OPPORTUNITIES
From the moment the house lights dimmed on our first production of the 2021-22 school year until the final bow this spring, our Fine and Performing Arts Department has continued its dedication to excellence. We've learned choreography together, sculpted together, and reveled in the delight of seeing our kids perform. We wowed and enriched our spellbound Seven Hills School community by working together.
Arts Alive!
The Inaugural Seven Hills ARTS ALIVE! Fine and Performing Arts Festival showcased Middle and Upper School students performing comedic and dramatic monologues, musical numbers, and dance routines in the Black Box theater and The Schiff Center. Students’ artwork was also displayed in the Donovan Arts Center.
Overture Awards
One freshman, two sophomores, and two seniors advanced to the semifinal round of the Cincinnati Arts Association Overture Awards competition in February. The Overture Awards competition is the largest solo arts event of its kind in Cincinnati, where students compete in the categories of creative writing, dance, instrumental music, theatre, visual art, and vocal music.
Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
In an extraordinary achievement, 69 Middle and Upper School students received recognition from the prestigious 2021 Scholastic Writing Awards this year. Of the approximately 600 award-winning regional submissions, 23% came from Seven Hills. Additionally, in the Critical Essay category, Seven Hills earned 59% of the 22 Regional Gold Keys. Four students received national awards, including Best in Grade, an award that is only given to two students per grade level throughout the country, and the American Voices Medal, which only goes to one writing competitor in the region. Seven Hills competed in the Southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and Southeastern Indiana region.
100% Student Participation
Performing at the Aronoff
Five students placed in the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra (CSYO), two placed in the Cincinnati Junior Strings (CJS), and one student placed in the Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble (CYWE). The CYWE is the only comprehensive ensemble program for winds and percussion students in the greater Cincinnati area. The CJS has made several international performing tours of Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, Canada, China, and Hong Kong.
Students encounter every facet of the arts throughout their time at Seven Hills. From kindergarten to seventh grade, students take music, theater, and visual arts classes. Starting in eighth grade, students choose two of the three types of art classes to refine their skills. In the Upper School, approximately 80% of students exceed the minimum number of required arts credits.
