t Seven Hills, our 2019-20 school year was characterized by many moments of change, success, exploration, discoveries, and growth. The year opened with robust inperson partnerships and brilliant examples of community. Toward the last quarter of the year, however, we watched as our pre-kindergarten through Upper School students beautifully synthesized knowledge as we adapted throughout to navigate the barriers and opportunities a pandemic laid before us. Our community grew in unexpected and inconceivable ways and our relationships grew closer together even as we worked through safety protocols that required us to be apart. In varied ways, we continue to tell the story of a purposeful social and academic journey. Join us in taking a look.

Chris Garten

Dear Families and Friends,

The 2019-20 school year began with a flourish, with the long-anticipated opening of the Schiff Center and our new Field House and the launch of several new school programs. As we entered the second semester, Seven Hills, like schools around the world, faced the challenge of reimagining schooling in the face of a global pandemic. In early March, the state of Ohio mandated that all schools close for in-person learning, and our faculty had to pivot quickly to develop a robust remote learning experience for the last eight weeks of the academic year. After consulting with colleagues in schools around the world, our teachers developed an approach that preserved, as much as possible, both the students’ academic experience and the close relationships that define our community life. Working together, teachers, students, and their families made a relatively smooth transition to learning at home.

In spite of these new challenges, 2019-20 was another very productive year for Seven Hills. In the fall, Niche.com named Seven Hills the Best College Preparatory School in Ohio, based on a robust analysis of our students’ success on Advanced Placement and SAT tests and in college admissions. At the same time, Seven Hills was one of just eight schools in the country awarded an Educational Leadership Grant by the Edward E. Ford Foundation. The grant will fund Civic Engagement Seminars, which, when launched in 2021-22, will immerse students in studying how the impact of complex global challenges (e.g. climate change, poverty, infectious disease) might be addressed within our own local community. Strategic Program Initiatives With their customary energy and dedication, the Board, administrative team, and faculty continued to work on many of the elements of the Strategic Plan of 2019. In this, the first year of the five-year plan, we have been working on: Diversity and Inclusion

• Expanding the Seven Hills Academic Readiness Program (SHARP) to provide support for students of color and their families.

• Retaining a human resources consultant to assist in identifying and recruiting faculty of color. • Reviewing several survey courses to ensure that students from diverse backgrounds can “see themselves” more often in what they read and study. Digital Literacy • Developing a scope and sequence of the technology skills students will master at each grade level.

• Introducing technology projects in several new subject areas at Lotspeich. • Exploring ways to introduce coding to the Middle School Innovation Lab classes.

4

FROM

• Expanding Doherty’s interdisciplinary Studio Time program from Unit III to Units II and I.

Global Awareness and Civic Engagement • Creating opportunities for more purposeful community service at Doherty. • Developing two pilot, project-based learning units to immerse Middle School students in an extended study of a significant community issue. • Planning the Upper School’s E.E. Ford Civic Engagement Seminars for implementation in 2021-22. Health, Wellness, and Community • Implementing the Positive Discipline program at Doherty. • Developing a new interdisciplinary health curriculum at Lotspeich, taught in science and physical education. • Evolving the Middle School Advisory Program to include more engaging social and emotional learning.

CHRISTOPHER P. GARTEN

• Expanding Upper School student leadership roles to include peer tutoring, mentoring, and teaching assistants.

Dear Friends, As Chair of the Board of Trustees for the last three years, it has been my privilege to help guide the school through another exciting period of growth and development. Honestly, it is humbling to reflect on how far we have come together. The beginning of the 2019-20 school year saw the official opening of two long-anticipated new facilities. The fabulous new Schiff Center, a state-of-the-art performance venue with a 500-seat auditorium, has exceeded our wildest expectations. Throughout the school year, the new facility provided an inspiring venue for a host of ambitious arts performances in all four divisions. It has also made possible a series of special assemblies that have featured thought leaders in our community. In a few short months, it has truly become the beating heart of our school community. In addition, our new four-court Field House has had an equally profound impact on the school’s athletics programs and physical education. The greatest benefit has been streamlining the after-school practice schedule which has made it possible to get our dedicated student athletes home at a much earlier hour.

Moreover, the opening of these two new buildings has also created opportunities for additional space and significant improvements to existing facilities. On the Hillsdale campus, a major renovation of the Founders Hall cafeteria and redesign of the Hillsdale Commons as a second dining facility has made our lunch service more efficient and broadened the array of healthy and nutritious options. In addition, we have renovated the Donovan Arts Center to relocate Middle School theater classes to the Black Box theater, housed our Middle School art classes in a brand-new studio, and created new spaces for Upper School digital arts and design courses. Finally, in the Middle School, the Innovation Lab has been redesigned, and three new classrooms have been created. At Doherty, we have done a significant renovation of Haile Hall, with new paint and flooring. In addition, we have made substantial investment in our food service program, reorganizing the kitchen in Brooks Hall and hiring a new chef to provide a wider array of healthy options. As exciting as it has been to see these projects come together, the greatest joy has been seeing how quickly the faculty has leveraged these facilities to create new learning opportunities for our students. How fortunate we are to have this dedicated group of educators teaching our children! As I complete my term as Board Chair, I want to thank everyone who has supported these—and so many other—worthy projects so generously. Seven Hills is truly blessed to have the support of so many deeply committed donors and volunteers. Because of you, this school that we all love continues to strengthen and improve! Best,

Jennifer Stein Chair, Board of Trustees

AT SEVEN HILLS, THE SCHOOL YEAR OF 2019-20 WAS OFTEN DEFINED BY THE UNIQUENESS OF A COLLECTIVE JOURNEY THROUGH TIME. WHILE WE BEGAN THE YEAR ONE WAY, WE ENDED THE YEAR ON AN ALTOGETHER DIFFERENT PATH, CHARACTERIZED BY MANY MOMENTS OF SUCCESS, EXPLORATION, AND GROWTH. We watched as our Middle and Upper School students beautifully synthesized the knowledge they acquired about citizenship and civic engagement to better understand our world through deep studies of homelessness and infectious diseases. Throughout the year, our four-year college counseling department further fortified scaffolding tailored to the needs of our Upper School students, in order to help them realize their social and academic goals. Our Upper School students participated in a number of robust college counseling workshops, fairs, and other dynamic events. This year also helped us continue to tell our story of purposeful community partnership. Seven Hills Academic Readiness Program (SHARP) continues its commitment to community partnership and outreach through a number of initiatives. In its third year, SHARP is welcoming more students to campus and providing an additional network of support for current Seven Hills students. All of these moments took place in and on our campuses, where students have access to new and recently renovated, state-of-the-art facilities, such as The Schiff Center, Field House, and Hillsdale Commons on the Hillsdale Campus, and academic spaces across the Doherty Campus. At Seven Hills, we learned to rethink and recreate, adapt and pivot. When remote learning came onto the scene, our school community responded quickly and creatively at a crucial time to receive and deliver powerful learning experiences. Through our experiences of the 2019-20 school year, whether we were physically together or apart, we were always Seven Hills. Our school community thrived while participating in a number of traditional and first-time events that brought us together to ponder scientific discoveries, learn during clinics taught by community members, and to send off our proud, hardworking seniors at the end of a one-of-a-kind school year. Our community grew in unexpected and inconceivable ways. Throughout this publication, take a look at stories of our excellence, growth, and adaptation throughout the 2019-20 school year at Seven Hills.

FINANCIAL REPORT

Financial Report 2019-20

The Business Office of The Seven Hills School is responsible for the preparation, integrity, and fair presentation of the financial statements and other accounting information in this annual report. The school maintains a system of internal controls over financial reporting, which are designed to provide assurance to the school’s management and Board of Trustees that assets are protected and that transactions and events are recorded properly in the financial statements. The Board of Trustees, through the Finance Committee, comprised of trustees not employed by the school, has adopted an Audit Subcommittee that includes engaging an independent accounting firm, Mellott & Mellott, P.L.L., to ensure that the financial statements are accurately presented. The school has again maintained a balanced budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2020. In the strategic effort to maintain the affordability of the school, the administration, faculty, and staff continue to find ways to reduce costs while persisting to prioritize teaching and learning. Schoolwide operating efficiencies have been gained by increasing energy conservation, pruning unnecessary administrative positions, rethinking student-faculty ratios, and removing under-enrolled programs. The overall financial health of the school was again aided by the growth of the endowment, which provides funding for teacher salaries, financial aid, faculty professional development, and distinctive programming and technology. Both annual giving and capital gifts enrich every part of the school. Most importantly, these gifts bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of educating each child.

When remote learning came onto the scene, Seven Hills faculty and administration responded to the need to adapt efficiently and quickly at a crucial time. The collective pivot among students, parents, faculty, and administrators was a product of trust and expertise, as well as a source of inspiration and pride. While the last quarter of the 2019-2020 school year doesn’t define the entire school year, it reflected the preparedness, agility, and collaboration that laid the groundwork for remote learning success at Seven Hills. Seven Hills faculty researched a number of delivery models, which included synchronous and asynchronous lessons. Under the synchronous model, students and teachers were online together in real time, doing class together every day. As part of the asynchronous learning program, students logged on and studied at different times and not necessarily in the same virtual space. Seven Hills Director of Technology Scott Cagle said success with remote learning came, in part, as a result of the school’s longstanding technology program, which already included iPads and laptops for children as early as third grade, as well as teachers’ comfort levels with several online applications, such as SeeSaw and Zoom. Cagle said teachers constantly inspired administrators, who worked to support their efforts, challenges, and questions as Seven Hills evolved into “a new kind of school.” “It was all about being prepared and creative,” said Cagle. “The entire week before spring break, our Middle and Upper schools were using one or two blocks per day to get students used to learning

14

remotely. We also met with fourth- and fifth-grade faculty to go over the social learning platform, Schoology, for about two to three hours a day, for several days.” At Lotspeich and Doherty lower schools, teachers designed mostly asynchronous interactive experiences that incorporated pre-recorded lessons. The students participated in weekly check-ins with teachers. And their teachers found ways to challenge their young students while maintaining familiar components of their face-to-face school days throughout their remote learning experiences. Middle School students found the same element of relevancy and discovery continued to be infused into their remote learning lessons and projects. In Middle and Upper schools, students logged on daily to attend classes in all subjects in synchronous learning format, which required all students to attend classes online with their teachers every day. The synchronous format also allowed Middle and Upper School students to study topics deeply, as some teachers opted to delve into fewer lessons, rather than focus on a breadth of topics. In addition to reconfiguring school and home lives, members of the school community took on many roles to embrace and capably carry out new and unfamiliar roles. During the last week of March, Seven Hills students learned their school lives would change exponentially. Within a few days, they grasped a new reality that would bring them back to home base.

ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE THROUGH GROWTH AND ADAPTATION

At the heart of it all were the students. From 2-year-olds to seniors, students were greeted in synchronous and asynchronous formats. For younger students, teachers discovered that the efficacy of lessons lied in the flexibility of time, so they most often delivered asynchronous lessons, or lessons that were pre-recorded and did not bring students together all at one time. For Middle and Upper School students, teachers followed a synchronous lesson plan format, in which students logged on all at once and participated in lessons via Zoom for as long as an hour. Rising senior and student government officer David Kiley said his perception of remote learning shifted greatly from an “extension of spring break” to something more meaningful.

DOHERTY

LOTSPEICH

MIDDLE SCHOOL

UPPER SCHOOL

“What I thought would be a break turned out to be an enormous challenge, and, more importantly, a learning experience,” said Kiley. “The separation caused by quarantine made students take initiative, whether it was reaching out to teachers and peers for help, speaking up in Zoom meetings, or continuing to learn outside of class. With this sense of initiative came independence.” Kiley said he and his peers found themselves growing up in an unusual, quarantined kind of way. He also said remote learning was physically taxing, something he hadn’t anticipated, but rewarding in the end. “After a day of staring at a screen, my eyes stung, my head hurt, and my legs felt numb, but I felt so fortunate to be connected to a community of students and teachers who care deeply for one another,” Kiley said. “Faculty and teachers put their plans aside to meet the needs of the students, and students showed up to each class ready to put in the effort; learning became a team exercise. “My learning was remote, but I never felt alone.”

Seven Hills’ four-year college counseling program boasts an ongoing, proactive experience that dynamically provides informative and interactive year-round programs and activities for students and their families. In early fall 2019, the program’s four college counselors, including Assistant Head of School and Director of College Counseling Susan Marrs, Assistant Director of College Counseling Alex Catalan, Beth Driehaus, and Julie DiRoma, launched the school year with a Common Application Boot Camp for senior students. The team also offered students and families an extensive rundown on Scoir—an online college admissions networking application that helps match students with tailored colleges and universities. By September 2019, sophomores and juniors reviewed the knowledge they needed to successfully take the PSAT. They also attended college fairs and, with their parents, participated in mock admissions workshops, in which they had the opportunity to practice their interviewing skills under the tutelage of college admission experts. Driehaus said she believes parents appreciate the uniquely-scaled nature of Seven Hills’ college counseling program. “For our freshmen and sophomores, we develop relationships with them in the context of who they are, what they’re interested in, and how they prefer to learn—rather than in an immediate focus on college fit,” said Driehaus. “By their junior year, we have much more regular

26

conversations with our kids—building off of what we already know, and integrating college lists into the conversation.” Driehaus added that the conversations often complement the ones that students are having around the dinner table with their families, and so the partnership between the college counseling department and our parents is critical. “By their senior year, as kids are working on essays and applications, they have the college counseling department to provide feedback, help provide accountability for deadlines, and assist them in managing the application process. In this, we are a team, and the immediacy of the looming application deadlines fosters a close bond between the counselors and our families. So in addition to the fact that we try to keep our program developmentally appropriate for the various age groups, I think parents also appreciate the knowledge that they are navigating this process with someone who knows and loves their children.” The latter part of first semester is just as robust as the start of the school year. In October and November, students and parents had Coffee with a Counselor, and learned alongside their children in a specialized workshop entitled, “Guiding the College-Bound Athlete.” Special workshops for parents of juniors focus on the intricacies of the admissions process. Parents of freshmen and sophomores start off the calendar year with informative and interactive college counseling meetings in January.

ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE THROUGH GROWTH AND ADAPTATION

With robust programs each month of the school year, Seven Hills college counseling program is woven through the fabric of student culture, with helpful workshops on such topics as college financial aid and scholarships taking place during meetings and advisories. From spring of 2020 to the last few days of school in May, Seven Hills’ college counseling department invited juniors and their families to delve, via Zoom, into different facets of the college application experience, including sessions on college terminology, college essay workshops, and an online college fair. In her 11th year serving on the prestigious Princeton Review Advisory Board, Marrs said

the uniquely robust Upper School program provides a partnership in which students and counselors grow and learn together, enabling students to present the strongest possible applications to colleges and universities throughout the United States and beyond. “College counseling at Seven Hills is an ever-evolving, ever-fascinating experience that allows our counselors to get to know students well and be helpful to students over the course of their high school lives,” said Marrs. “We listen, we question, we guide, and we counsel, always with an eye toward helping them find the colleges that will be excellent next steps in their academic and personal journeys."

SEVEN HILLS

T H R O UG H O U T G R E AT E R C I N C I N NAT I

At Seven Hills, the spirit of community reaches from the student body to the Greater Cincinnati area. Over the years, students and faculty have homed in on the unique needs of young people with programs such as the student-founded tutoring program at neighboring John P. Parker Elementary School in Madisonville, now in its eighth year, and the Seven Hills Academic Readiness Program (SHARP), now in its third year. Students and faculty alike have worked diligently to develop, continually refine, and institutionally hardwire such programs to be sustainable for years to come. The Seven Hills Academic Readiness Program (SHARP), was launched three years ago by English teacher and learning specialist Meredith Brown, and was facilitated throughout the 2019-20 school year by program co-coordinator Brooke Richart and teachers Amaris White and Kaitlin Link, among others. The program supports middle and high school students interested in attending Seven Hills or other private or independent college preparatory schools in the area. The program, which includes summer and fall sessions, has tapped into the nuanced needs and experiences of some Black and Hispanic students at Seven Hills and other schools throughout the tri-state area. Brown said SHARP is an outreach initiative born of necessity and purpose. Throughout her career as an educator at Seven Hills, she observed that while most of her students thrived under a wealth of support, a few did not. She noticed that many of the students who did not benefit from the same amount of social scaffolding and built-in support systems at school were African American students. Too often, these students would go through the entire school day without seeing someone who looked like them or shared their history or cultural background, she said. 40

“Throughout my career, I have wanted to support all my students, and I recognized early that my students of color, and particularly African American and Hispanic students, faced more challenges and sometimes felt they were alone in classrooms,” said Brown. “SHARP is designed to begin to address those issues both by welcoming more students to campus and providing an additional network of support for current Seven Hills students. It works because we offer families the opportunity to come to campus and learn about the admission process. SHARP students get to meet teachers and learn in an approachable way, which is consistent with how we teach at the school.” The first SHARP School Year session, held during the 2017-18 school year, featured a handful of students from other public and private schools in the tri-state area who were interested in attending

leading private schools. By the end of the first SHARP Summer session, 26 students had participated in SHARP. Seven Hills parent Lionel Griffin said his son, rising eighth-grader Mason, became interested in 2018 after hearing about Seven Hills and SHARP from a friend. Mason participated in subsequent SHARP programs and enrolled at Seven Hills the fall of the same year. Griffin said he and his family appreciated the unique access the SHARP program gave parents and students year-round. “In Cincinnati, we have a lot of great options and we looked at all of the schools but the experience we had during SHARP was pivotal for us in our decision to select Seven Hills because we were able to get more information from faculty and administration,” Griffin said. “We were able to speak with everyone and we had plenty of face time with them.”

Sustainable Outreach with John P. Parker Elementary While SHARP reaches students throughout Greater Cincinnati, Seven Hills’ longstanding partnership with John P. Parker Elementary on Madisonville Road is just a two-minute drive from the Hillsdale Campus. Created in her junior year at Seven Hills by alumna Jessica Seibold ’14, the tutoring program pairs Seven Hills Upper School students with elementary school students during lunchtime. Director of Experiential Learning Nick Francis said the program that started out with Seibold alone now functions with as many as 12 students who tutor John P. Parker Elementary students throughout the year. In addition, Francis said about six teachers also help by driving students to and from the school. “Our students truly enjoy tutoring and interacting with the elementary students,” said Francis. “It’s a great way for our students to gain a wider view of circumstances around them and give back to our local community.”

The program has proven to be an important step in Seven Hills’ diversity initiative, laid out in the school’s strategic plan. Now, at the end of the program’s third year, the Seven Hills Academic Readiness Program has helped place 23 students of color at Seven Hills. Director of Enrollment Management Janet Hill said SHARP has created increased awareness of Seven Hills within historically underrepresented communities and promoted diversity among Seven Hills’ applicant pool. “SHARP has encouraged positive word-of-mouth about Seven Hills and provides valuable collaboration with our current families and alums,” said Hill. “It also creates an opportunity to invite students on campus and at the conclusion of the program, the students leave with a better understanding of what a Seven Hills and independent school education can provide. On opening day of the 2020-21 school year, 24% of our newly enrolled African American and Hispanic students will have participated in SHARP School Year or SHARP Summer. SHARP is an indispensable tool in our admission efforts.”

SHARP students participate in a design thinking showcase in February 2020.

SHARP Summer 2019 students play a game with theater teachers Jacob Hauser and Marc Raia.

THE CULTURE OF OUR

COMING TOGETHER FOR A MEMORABLE SCHOOL YEAR

Together and apart, the Seven Hills community hosted special events in the 2019-20 school year that showed our school spirit; showcased global cultures; tested our science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills; and celebrated the Class of 2020 at a distance, to name a few. Janet Hill, Director of Enrollment Management, said it was wonderful to see students, parents, faculty, and staff come together and support the community at all-school spirit events at the beginning of the school year. “Homecoming, pep rallies, and other spirit events not only celebrated our students, they also provided opportunities for continued community building across all four divisions,” Hill said. “Our Seven Hills traditions are important in continuing to foster a strong emotional connection with the school community. These events were successful due to the support from the students, faculty, and staff who were proud to show their Stinger Pride!” In addition to our traditional spirit events, Seven Hills hosted two new events—We All Bee-long and the Lower School STEM event. We All Bee-long, held in March on the Hillsdale Campus, was organized by pre-kindergarten teacher Kiki Schneider, who served as Lotspeich’s diversity coordinator for two years, and Upper School English teacher Nate Gleiner, chair of the equity and justice team. “The new, all-school event included cultural traditions, games, hands-on activities and crafts, student performances, and food provided by our very own Seven Hills families!” Schneider said.

46

“We All Bee-long was designed to celebrate our global community and proceeds benefited Cooperative for Education.” The community also came together on the Doherty Campus for the Lower School STEM event in early February. The event was hosted by the Doherty Parent Community, which partnered with the Lotspeich Parent Community. “The event brought the entire school community together—from students to parents to faculty,” said Susan Schaefer, Doherty Parent Community co-chair. “Members of the Middle and Upper School science departments, led by eighth-grade science teacher Ken Revell, created engaging, creative STEM stations, which were led and facilitated by Middle School student volunteers. Some parents even created stations!” Revell said the event was created to build relationships across Seven Hills and give eighth-graders the opportunity to become leaders in the community. “Each eighth-grade student developed a set of demonstrations and activities based on a scientific concept,” Revell said. “They became the teachers and worked with our pre-kindergarten and Lower School students to generate enthusiasm about science.” On April 1, Seven Hills moved to remote learning under orders from Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine to close campuses due to the spread of COVID-19. With can-do enthusiasm, students and teachers came together through computer screens to hold classes, share work, and take virtual field trips. Following social distancing measures, the Seven Hills community found new ways to celebrate the Class of 2020. In May, faculty, staff,

ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE THROUGH GROWTH AND ADAPTATION

administrators, and the Upper School Parent Community donned masks, lined the sidewalks of the Hillsdale Campus, and cheered and waved as students and their families drove through the Hillsdale Campus parking lot for a socially distanced senior send-off parade. “We're tremendously proud of the Class of 2020, who are such an accomplished and caring group of young men and women,” Head of Upper School Matt Bolton said. “The senior parade, on the last day of classes in May, was a chance to bring this group together, at a distance, and to celebrate their last day of high school. After not seeing each other in the fourth quarter, it was an emotional moment for all of us.”

Upper School cheerleaders taught a clinic during Homecoming 2019.

Upper School students performed in the winter play, “All in the Timing.”

Doherty pre-kindergarteners took their annual flight as part of Cultural Connections Week. Students “visited” Greece!

Doherty Campus family, friends, faculty, and staff enjoyed the annual Pancake Breakfast and Art Auction.

Middle School French teacher Jacky Kalubi taught sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students how to make waffles during Global Education Day.

The Seven Hills community enjoyed the first-ever We All Bee-long event on the Hillsdale Campus. The event featured student performances, games, and hands-on activities.

The school year was capped off with virtual move-up ceremonies, Upper School Awards Day, and the graduation of the Class of 2020. “Both Awards Day and our virtual graduation ceremony showcased the accomplishments of our Upper School students and graduates and celebrated the profound and positive role that they have played in our community,” Bolton said. “Hearing the graduation speakers or award presenters, and seeing clips of the graduates themselves, gave us a chance to feel like we were part of one community.”

The Seven Hills community celebrated the Class of 2020, which included our drive-through car parade.

Kalpana Kotagal ’95, civil rights attorney and recipient of the Goodall Award for Distinguished Alumni, delivers the keynote speech at the Upper School’s virtual commencement ceremony on June 5.

Lower School students enjoyed a morning of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) on the Doherty Campus. Led by science teacher Ken Revell, Middle School students hosted scientifically scintillating experiments, workshops, and science-related craft-making.

During remote learning at Seven Hills, first-graders at the Lotspeich Lower School enjoyed a virtual visit to Riley Farm Rescue in Connecticut.

SEVEN HILLS COMES TOGETHER IN

S E V E N H I L L S S AW O P E N I N G O F N E W FA C I L I T I E S A N D R E N O VA T I O N S O F E X I S T I N G S P A C E S

In the 2019-20 academic year, students, faculty, and staff enjoyed Seven Hills’ newest inspiring spaces—The Schiff Center and the Field House—in myriad ways.

“It’s so nice for students to have a space they can call their own and work creatively—undisturbed,” Kuhlman said. “The kids have a place where they can go without distraction and spend that time really focusing.”

Director of Development Margo Kirstein said the buildings became a reality because of the commitment of the Seven Hills community, including faculty, donors, board members, and volunteers.

Because of the state-of-the-art auditorium, the quality of performances and concerts rose to new heights. Kuhlman specifically cited the Upper School fall musical. “The intricate, large-scale choreography for 'Hairspray' could never have happened in the Black Box Theatre,” she said.

“The Schiff Center and the Field House were a long time coming,” Kirstein said. “It was worth the wait because we got these magnificent facilities. No one could have dreamed of the impact they’re having.” In addition to these new buildings, in the summer of 2019, the Hillsdale Commons and infrastructure on the Doherty Campus underwent renovations. The Schiff Center Since its opening in May 2019, The Schiff Center has been home to Middle and Upper School student productions, concerts, special guest speakers, bustling fine and performing arts classrooms, and performances by our Doherty and Lotspeich Lower School students. The two-story, 43,000-squarefoot building features a 500-seat auditorium, classrooms and rehearsal spaces, green room, and two dressing rooms. Tina Kuhlman, chair of the fine and performing arts department, praised The Schiff Center for its impact on the arts programs. Kuhlman said students used the facility to its fullest in the 2019-20 school year. Between regularly scheduled classes, spaces were filled with students rehearsing scenes, singing, or playing their instruments.

Director of Experiential Learning Nick Francis said The Schiff Center played host to various speakers and performances in the 2019-20 school year. “Whether it was music or theater or presentations by speakers, our students could fully appreciate the event,” Francis said. “These events are critical components of the Experiential Learning program and The Schiff Center provides the best possible space for students to participate in these rich experiences. We are thankful to have such a wonderful facility and grateful to all who made the Schiff Center a reality.” The Field House At Homecoming 2019, Seven Hills cut the ribbon on the 31,000-square-foot Field House, which is home to four athletic courts and a multipurpose room. Athletic Director Scott Willard said the opening of the Field House “completely changed the face of our physical education and athletic programs.” “Our athletic and physical education programs now have access to seven basketball courts on our Hillsdale and Doherty campuses at their disposal,

ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE THROUGH GROWTH AND ADAPTATION

which has allowed for more physical activity options, additional available space during inclement weather, and more courts mean more students can be playing at the same time,” Willard said. “In just one year, we have already seen the enormous impact of the Field House.” The Field House has given Seven Hills the opportunity to host Middle School tournaments, youth league play, and Upper School scrimmages. Willard said the facility has also been used as rental space for area basketball, volleyball, and soccer clubs, which enables those outside the Seven Hills community to see the school’s incredible space. Renovations to the Hillsdale Commons and Doherty Campus Infrastructure The Hillsdale Commons is used by Upper School students to study, complete homework, eat lunch, and spend time between classes. Renovations to the space included new flooring and a fresh coat of paint, as well as increased Wi-Fi connectivity and functional new furniture, including booths, armchairs, and high top tables with outlets for charging their electronics. “The renovation was well-received during the school year,” said Director of Finance and Operations Robert Horne. “Anyone who goes into that space can really appreciate how it’s being used by students. It also adds a layer of flexibility for Upper School students. ”

At Seven Hills, students of all ages learn the importance of citizenship. When classes were in person and when they moved online because of the unanticipated timing of the onset of COVID-19 during the 2019-20 school year, our Middle and Upper School faculty developed curriculum to foster civic engagement. Eighth-graders Participate in Immersive Social Equity Experience Throughout the school year, eighth-graders studied Living Today, an in-depth, multi-lesson unit developed by the eighth-grade teaching team, which examined the interconnectivity of affordable housing, immigration, and food insecurity in Cincinnati. “Living Today is about being an informed citizen of this world, whether that is in the classroom at Seven Hills, the city of Cincinnati, the country, or the world,” said eighth-grade history teacher Judith Neidlein-Dial. Before Seven Hills moved to remote learning, students participated in a field study at the Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coalition. Located in Over-the-Rhine, the coalition’s mission is the eradication of homelessness in the city. Eighthgraders also visited 3CDC (Cincinnati Center City Development Corporation), a nonprofit that renovates properties in downtown Cincinnati. Each organization presented a different side of the debate over affordable housing. Neidlein-Dial noted that eighth-grade students are able to think critically about problems that contain conflicting points of view. “These are fantastic teachable moments,” she said. “This lesson is really about taking an issue and looking at it from 60

different perspectives and developing your own opinion. It reflects the world we live in.” On campus, eighth-graders completed dynamic, hands-on activities related to affordable housing, immigration, and food insecurity. Students examined SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs) in their math, history, and sciences classes. They also heard from speakers, including a woman who is an immigrant in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which allows some children of undocumented immigrations to become eligible for a work permit in the United States. Head of Middle School Bill Waskowitz said Living Today gives students the opportunity to develop their abstract and critical thinking skills and look outside themselves to “understand the greater good.” “Living Today asks kids to think about structural dynamics and systemic issues, such as systemic racism and systemic discrimination against those who are poor,” Waskowitz said. “It’s asking them to move well beyond their own bubble and outside their own comfort space. We want kids to feel uncomfortable and question, as this is when they are on the cusp of making meaningful and impactful discoveries that are personally relevant.” Juniors Use Journalism to Explore Impact of COVID-19 During remote learning, Upper School teacher Dan Polifka’s junior history class became reporters with a lesson examining the impact of COVID-19 on people living in Cincinnati. Students were asked to identify an area of life affected by the pandemic—such as business or health care—and interview one person in that field about

their experiences. Students used the interviews to create journalistic videos exploring their chosen topic. “This project helped students realize how much is on the line for a lot of people during the pandemic,” Polifka said. “That was clearly one big takeaway from some of the groups that did projects on business, especially on some local small businesses.” Polifka said the purpose of the lesson was pushing students outside their comfort zones and looking beyond themselves to better understand the experiences of others. He added that students are experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime event. “Our students are living through what’s going to become history. I tuned them into that and had them think about that,” Polifka said. “It’s something that we don’t often get to do. We’re often talking about things that feel quite remote to a lot of students. This is something that felt real.” Head of Upper School Matt Bolton said Polifka’s work is emblematic of the Upper School history department’s philosophy of stressing the relevance of history and how it intersects with students’ lives and experiences.

Sixth-grade English teacher Emily Stettler noted that the unit asked students to empathize with the difficult decisions people make in situations related to safety. “Students were presented with situations where they considered the point of view of many different people to understand how challenging it can be to make a decision you know will have consequences,” Stettler said. “For instance, ‘How do you most effectively care for the sick and protect the healthy?’” Students saw the lessons they learned play out in real time a few months later with the global spread of COVID-19. Stettler said she hopes the unit gave students insight to the decisions that are being made by governments daily. “Since we went into quarantine only a few months after the unit, students certainly saw how disease can spread, particularly in a world that is so connected,” Licata said. “We certainly didn’t realize when we planned and taught the lesson that they would be living through a pandemic, with real-world applications of some of the big issues we discussed.”

“Our history department presents history not as a static set of facts to be memorized or periods that you should study. History is shaped by the present and by the future,” Bolton said. “We help our students see that it’s a dialogue between the present and the past.” Sixth-graders Study Intricacies of Infectious Diseases In January, sixth-graders took part in an unintentionally timely unit on infectious diseases. The cross-curricular lesson examined issues related to infectious diseases and how they affect citizens across the world. “The sixth-grade teachers highlighted the differences between countries with differing resource levels dealing with an infectious disease, as well as the privilege of access to medicine and proper nutrition,” sixth-grade science teacher Jennifer Licata said. Students particularly focused on the bubonic plague as a historic event, including its connections to geography and a lesson about its statistics in math class. “We also talked about the misconceptions during that time period related to how the disease spread, the treatment, and prevention,” Licata said.
