Dear Seven Hills family and friends, As usual, the 2015-16 school year brought us a great deal of cause for pride and celebration! In a still very competitive climate, the Class of 2016 has earned admission to many of the nation’s leading colleges and universities. Eighty-five graduates will attend 58 different colleges in 19 states, including: Barnard, Belmont (2), Boston University, Carleton, Carnegie Mellon (2), University of Cincinnati (11), Colorado at Boulder (2), Columbia, Cornell (3), Dartmouth, DePaul (2), Indiana, Illinois, Kenyon (2), Loyola University, Loyola Marymount, Marquette, Miami (OH), MIT, Middlebury, NYU, Penn, Pittsburgh, Princeton (2), Purdue, Sarah Lawrence, South Carolina, SMU, Spelman, Tufts (2), Tuskegee, USC, Vanderbilt (3), and Washington University (3). July’s Advanced Placement scores brought another powerful validation of the academic strength of this school. In May, 59 seniors, 51 juniors, and 18 sophomores took a total of 275 college-level AP exams, an astonishing 95% of those exams yielding college-qualifying scores of 3 or higher! The mean score at Seven Hills was 4.10 out of 5.00, compared with 3.05 among college-bound students in the state of Ohio and 2.85 nationwide. To put this in perspective, only 60% of AP students nationwide earn even one passing score of 3 or above; at Seven Hills, that figure is 96%! Finally, this year nearly half the senior class, 43 seniors (and 30 juniors!), were recognized as AP Scholars, scoring 3 or above on at least three Advanced Placement exams. Our swim team won the school’s second consecutive state championship, while Middle and Upper School teams in several sports staged impressive record playoff runs. Our Middle and Upper School drama students earned regional recognition at the Junior Theater Festival and the Cappies, while fine and performing arts students in all four divisions thrilled us with some extraordinary performances ranging from a Mozart Missa Longa, to the music of Duke Ellington and Chicago, to Elf Junior. This year saw a major focus on improvements to our STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) programs, including a new Math Enrichment program at Lotspeich and the Creation Studio at Doherty. In May, we hosted our first-ever design thinking exposition. Seventh grade students from our Innovation Lab presented prototypes of their design projects to a panel of judges. Finally, we saw record enrollments in our new Upper School electives, including engineering, biotechnology, computer programming, and computer engineering. Under the leadership of Director of Experiential Learning Nick Francis, Seven Hills now offers eight interdisciplinary “concentrations,” which allow students, in effect, to “major” in such areas as: Community Engagement, Engineering and Design, Environmental Stewardship, Global Citizenship, Political Engagement, Technology and Innovation, The Arts, Wellness, and Written Expression. With a grant from the E.E. Ford Foundation, the Upper School faculty is designing, for May 2018, two dozen Experiential Learning Intensives— week-long, real-world learning seminars—designed to immerse students in a complex contemporary issue through background reading, research, discussion, interviews with community leaders and clients, on-site observation, and problem-solving. I am deeply grateful for all that our faculty and staff, alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends continue to do, to sustain the growth of this school. It is a very exciting place to learn and to grow!
Sincerely,
Christopher P. Garten Head of School 3

Dear friends,
What a great pleasure it is to lead the Board of Trustees in a school community so deeply committed to sustaining excellence! Again this year, guided by the Strategic Plan the Board adopted in May 2013, the school has made significant progress on several fronts. As you may remember, the thrust of the plan was to ensure that a Seven Hills education continues to foster the intellectual and personal skills our students will need to excel, not only in college, but in their lives beyond. Our hope, as always, is to provide the widest possible range of growth experiences to help students discover and develop their unique gifts and talents. Given the rapid pace of change in the world, Seven Hills has focused on strengthening programs that will prepare students for an increasingly interconnected global economy. Over the last three years, the faculty and administration have developed dozens of new courses and programs—in world languages, contemporary global issues, innovation and entrepreneurship, science and engineering, computer programming and engineering, and biotechnology. The school has also made a major investment in experiential learning, and strengthening advisory, student support, counseling, and college counseling programs to help students discover who they are and what they want to do with their lives. At the same time, the Board and a host of other school volunteers have worked tirelessly to refine, fund, and execute our ambitious Master Site Plan. Our Build.Connect.Inspire. capital campaign, now in its “quiet phase, is focused on several strategic investments to modernize our facilities on both campuses in order to build a more cohesive school community and to support the widest possible range of growth and character-building opportunities for our students. The new Lower Field Complex (2014) has made possible significant improvements in our athletic and physical education programs. The Taft Early Childhood Center on the Hillsdale Campus (2015) and the new playground on the Doherty Campus (2015) have provided state-of-the-art facilities for our youngest students and generated increased demand for our entry-level programs. This past summer, the Board authorized significant renovations to Jones Hall at the Doherty Campus, the Middle School building, and the track on the Hillsdale Campus. In 2015-16 and again this coming year, our fundraising efforts are focused on securing leadership commitments to fund our next two strategic priorities. These upcoming projects include a long-awaited Center for Arts and Leadership, including classroom space and a 450-seat auditorium, and some much-needed enhancements to our athletic facilities, including five new tennis courts and a new field house, with three indoor basketball courts to support our rapidly expanding indoor program. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank this entire school community for the important role you continue to play in sustaining and enhancing Seven Hills.
Elizabeth Y. Schiff, Chair & President Seven Hills Board of Trustees

Seven Hills mission: Seven Hills engages hearts and minds, challenging students to develop their unique capacities and preparing each for a meaningful role in a rapidly changing world.
8
In our 2015-16 Annual Report we take a look at the many ways Seven Hills faculty are taking deliberate steps to partner with students while empowering them to discover their unique capacities and chart their own successes. A critical part of our mission is to encourage students, as they grow, to take on age-appropriate responsibility, both for themselves and as part of a larger group. Our commitment to fostering independence can be seen daily in our classrooms, in the way Seven Hills teachers seek to engage students in guided inquiry, not merely giving them information, but modeling the process of seeking answers, through inquiry, research, and critical thinking. Woven into the fabric of the daily classroom experience is our conviction that students learn best when they assume responsibility for their own learning and when they learn to work alongside others. Accordingly, our teachers structure many opportunities for students to work together on significant projects involving inquiry, creative problemsolving, and the application of knowledge to new situations. In their academic work, and, even more, in their athletic, fine and performing arts, and service learning experiences, our students are guided to assume more and more of the responsibility for the success or failure of a new venture. Teachers, coaches, counselors, and advisors model leadership for their students before intentionally stepping back and handing over meaningful responsibilities to emerging student leaders. As a result, over time, Seven Hills students develop the skills they need both to lead and to work effectively with others. Beyond our traditional focus on fostering leadership and responsibility through academic experiences, Seven Hills has recently created several new signature programs in this area. New programs in college counseling and experiential learning have been designed to help students find and develop their unique talents. In the fine and performing arts and in athletics, coaches and teachers are working to find ways to turn over more of the responsibility to student leaders and to foster leadership skills in a more intentional way. Finally, on two faculty task forces, our STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) teachers and our newly expanded counseling staff are working, in separate arenas, to teach more intentionally, such social and emotional skills as self-awareness, selfmanagement, social awareness and empathy, responsible decision-making, and building relationships. This work is at the very heart of our mission as a school.

THE FINANCIAL REPORT
Fi nancial Report
2015-16
The Business Office of The Seven Hills School is responsible for the preparation, integrity, and fair presentation of the financial statements and other accounting information in this annual report.
The school maintains a system of internal controls over financial reporting, which are designed to provide assurance to the school’s management and Board of Trustees that assets are protected and that transactions and events are recorded properly in the financial statements. The Board of Trustees, through the Finance Committee, comprised of trustees not employed by the school, has adopted an Audit Subcommittee that includes engaging an independent accounting firm, Mellott & Mellott, P.L.L., to ensure that the financial statements are accurately presented. The school has again maintained a balanced budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2016. In the strategic effort to maintain the affordability of the school, the administration, faculty and staff continue to find ways to reduce costs while persisting to prioritize teaching and learning. Schoolwide operating efficiencies have been gained by increasing energy conservation, pruning unnecessary administrative positions, rethinking student-faculty ratios, and removing underenrolled programs. The overall financial health of the school was again aided by the growth of the endowment, which provides funding for teacher salaries, financial aid, faculty professional development, and distinctive programming and technology. Both annual giving and capital gifts enrich every part of the school. Most importantly, these gifts bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of educating each child.

FINDING ONE’S SELF BY WORKING WITH OTHERS
AT H L E T I C S O N E VO I CE , O N E H E A RT On a sweltering day thick with humidity and glaring sun, the Seven Hills girls varsity tennis team—a mix of freshmen and seniors—fought hard for every point against a powerhouse rival team. Something about their mindset shifted that day, as if the young women had discovered a font of courage, purpose, and focus on the court. “They showed the team, themselves, and all who watched that our team is never to be counted out of a point, a game, or a match. Too much heart,” said Tim Drew, Seven Hills tennis coach and Upper School physics teacher. “That match alone was the turning point of the 2015 season. With one heart, one voice, they beat Dayton’s number one ranked, Division One powerhouse, Centerville, 5-0.” Drew continued, “The senior leadership and the team’s identity had been established by the courage of a team willing to push beyond just playing tennis. The mentality of the team had changed to a unified voice of confidence declaring to any opposing squad that they would have to take it from us to win.” The unity of commitment set by the girls varsity tennis team is something that cannot be formally taught, but it can be recognized and fostered through intentional focus on responsibility and leadership in athleticism, said Brian Phelps, Seven Hills athletic director. “Our student athletes came together for a greater good that reached beyond winning,” said Phelps. “They pressed
through, persevered, and, through their true understanding of sports leadership, personified their identity and mission throughout the season.” This fall, for the first time in the history of Seven Hills' athletic program, the school formalized the Seven Hills Athletic Leadership Team, an ongoing initiative set around a 10-week program structure, that brings together coaches and select student leader athletes for workshops and guided discussions. The program—based on nationally known sports leader Jeff Jansen’s The Team Captain’s Leadership Manual— has typically been used on the collegiate level, but is gaining the attention of upper school athletics educators. “Historically, school coaches elect or appoint captains but don’t focus on teaching students to be captains or leaders,” said Phelps. “In the past, we expected these young people to know how to lead others just by giving them the title.” But that isn’t always the case. The idea to launch the program sprang from Phelps’ desire to educate students on athletic leadership before asking students to be responsible for such a role. Phelps’ vision to equip Seven Hills student athletes with genuine and relevant leadership training starts with a studentteacher partnership with four Seven Hills coaches—Bryce Carlson, Tim Drew, Nick Francis, and Erin Wierzba—who, along with Phelps, will lead the program. In August, the Seven Hills Athletic
Leadership Team coaches nominated students representing every Seven Hills athletic team to participate in the pilot year of the program. Some of the group’s student members are team captains and some are student athletes who embrace their roles and regularly bring positive energy to their teams. “Sports leadership at Seven Hills is built upon a foundation of trust and clear expectations,” said Phelps. “We are committed to promoting sportsmanship, ethical behavior, and integrity. We emphasize participation and the development of skills in grades one through six so the school can field its most competitive teams in grades seven through 12.” The example of the 2015-16 girls’ tennis team underscores the mission of the Seven Hills athletic department—an atmosphere where competition is balanced with the development of positive self-esteem of each student athlete, throughout their years at Seven Hills, and beyond. “We want our students to know what it means to be humble in victory and gracious in defeat, to know they are part of something special,” said Phelps. “And when they graduate and look back on their experience as an athlete at Seven Hills, we want them to realize the adversity they faced through their athletic experiences will translate into their abilities to successfully navigate the adversities and embrace the victories they will face in life.”

The practical and layered professional backgrounds of many Seven Hills arts teachers provides a depth of purpose the Seven Hills fine and performing arts department has not seen in decades. To Over the course of their Seven Hills name a few, the Seven Hills Middle School careers, the vastly unique opportunities for theater teacher has a background in students in the fine and performing arts mathematics as well as fine arts. As examples of the dynamic partnerships Seven Hills fine and performing arts teachers forge with their students, during the 2015-16 school year, instrumental music teacher John Rising invited an alumnus and his band to perform beat music, in order to expose Middle and Upper students to the unique art form and recognize the alumnus’ dedication to his profession. Doherty music teacher Maria Eynon often selects musical and historical studies that correspond to her students’ academic focus. And in the Upper School, technical theater teacher Trey Tatum approached students with a multifaceted task: tap into your everyday school experiences to find creative material for an original, dystopian play. The finished product, the original play Maelstrom, incorporated innovative set and costume design, student-conceived wit, and thoughtfully delivered material. Maelstrom was nominated for a Cappie—the nationally recognized equivalent of the Tony Awards for high school productions—in several categories, in the spring of 2016. Kuhlman said Seven Hills’ current capital campaign for the Center for Arts and Leadership is the next phase in the continued development of the fine and performing arts program. “The fine and performing arts department has been growing steadily, and we have, in the past several years, seen the highest number of programs and participants in the history of the school,” said Kuhlman. “The design of the new Center for Arts and Leadership building addresses the classroom and performance space needs that have arisen over time for this thriving program, and will afford our students the opportunity to reach their potential and showcase their achievements and creative practices. This building will be a strong symbol of this school’s commitment to innovation and excellence in the arts.”

FINDING ONE’S SELF BY WORKING WITH OTHERS
STEM
SMALL RISKS, BIG LESSONS:
U N PA C K I N G D E S I G N T H I N K I N G AT S E V E N H I L L S In the nonfiction book and film Touching the Void, two extreme mountaineers faced a number of harrowing experiences after they summited a 21,000-foot peak in the Andes. After three days of silent S T E M (SCIENCE, struggle and life-dependent TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, decisionAND MATH) TA S K F O R C E making, each BR I AN ARN O LD man, on his own, survived KAREN G LU M unknown TRACY H I C KEN LO O P E R struggles and challenges. L I Z LO REN Z Head of NATALI E WI LLI AMS Middle School Bill Waskowitz said the movie title comes to mind when he thinks about the purpose of the Innovation Lab, a makerspace in the Seven Hills Middle School that houses formal and informal design thinking programs. “With technical climbers, there comes a point when, no matter what gear and skills you have, you will face a challenge for which you aren’t prepared. When this occurs, you just have to reach out and trust your abilities and training, with the confidence that there is going to be a handhold there, even if you can’t see it,” said Waskowitz. “While our students are working in the Innovation Lab, we allow them to take risks, take baby steps into the ‘void’ where there is not one right answer they can easily jump to.” After working with Waskowitz to take the Innovation Lab from concept to concrete, Innovation Lab director Karen Glum launched, at the start of the 2015-16 school year, Seven Hills’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program (now called the Design Thinking Program)—the school’s first formal design thinking curriculum for seventh graders—and equipped the space for less structured student exploration.

Because school-age students typically are still developing the discipline and organizational skills to embrace long-term projects and abstract outcomes, the need to try a number of iterations before arriving at an answer can be uncomfortable. Through that discomfort, however, students encounter a
number of rich learning opportunities. Teachers who have guided them through the process can step back and allow their students to take on more sophisticated concepts, carry more responsibilities, and frame their own dynamic learning.
“Every aspect of the projects Seven Hills Lower School students are tackling requires collaboration, cooperation, perseverance, problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity,” said Lotspeich project math teacher Liz Lorenz. “Throughout the duration of the project, students encounter many obstacles, challenges, and failures. The projects are teacher facilitated but student led.”
“Adolescents resist not being able to quickly find a solution for their problem,” said Glum, whose end-of-year project required SHIEP students to produce five prototypes of their product. “Once students start to understand the importance of prototyping, they soon value the process, how things change in small increments, and how it results in improvement for their product, and, ultimately, for the recipient for whom the innovation was designed.”
While the concept of design thinking finds its way into formal primary and secondary curriculum across the nation, Seven Hills is poised to define STEM as it speaks to the school’s Educational Philosophy of engaging students with relevant knowledge in a relationship-based environment. As an integral first step, the school’s new STEM task force, led by Glum, will identify and formalize Seven Hills’ goals for a more cohesive, coordinated, strategic STEM program. The task force consists of Glum, Hickenlooper, Lorenz, Lotspeich science teacher Natalie Williams, and Upper School computer science teacher Brian Arnold.
The youngest students at Seven Hills are also learning this foundational concept. On both the Doherty and Hillsdale campuses, Lower School students are being introduced to the idea of working through problems, taking steps back, identifying glitches, and owning their work, each step a powerful learning tool that encourages learning through inquiry. For COMPUTATIONAL THINKING example, Doherty kindergarteners INSPIRED BY MIT are using fairy tale plots to guide design thinking projects, such as DURING THE 2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR, SEVEN building ziplines and other devices that allow the three subjects of Three HILLS SIXTH GRADERS WILL USE AN ONLINE Billy Goats Gruff to avoid the PLATFORM CALLED STAR LOGO NOVA , A ubiquitous troll on the bridge.
RECENTLY UPDATED LEARNING TECHNOLOGY
“The process of inquiry, which is integral to STEM, is the way young children naturally learn,” said Tracy Hickenlooper, director of program development and technology integration on the Doherty Campus. “We guide the children, they explore, ask questions, and discuss and share their findings.”
DEVELOPED BY MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY’S SCHELLER TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM. STAR LOGO NOVA ALLOWS STUDENTS AND TEACHERS TO CREATE 3-D GAMES AND SIMULATIONS FOR
On the Hillsdale Campus, Lotspeich second graders researched, tested, and built various games out of cardboard boxes in late May to prepare for Arcade Day, based on Caine’s Arcade, a documentary about a 9-year-old who spent his summer vacation building an elaborate cardboard arcade inside his father’s used auto parts store.
UNDERSTANDING COMPLEX SYSTEMS.
“Across grades and disciplines, Seven Hills students are exposed to the possibility of becoming creators of technology, not just consumers,” said Arnold. “Through the ongoing work of our STEM task force, we will seek to give students the opportunities to take this more difficult but highly rewarding path.”

FINDING ONE’S SELF BY WORKING WITH OTHERS
N U MRTU R I N G I N D F U LN E S S NEW COUNSELING DEPARTMENT TEACHES SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL HEALTH A third grader asks a school counselor to sit in on a tough discussion with a classmate. An overwhelmed 17-year-old skips lunch to seek help from a friend or teacher. With the beginning of every school day, students approach new situations with a toolbox of sorts. How and whether they access their toolboxes will determine their comfort levels with negotiating difficult situations throughout school, and in life.

Social-emotional learning is the cornerstone for Seven Hills’ four school counselors, and one that will lay the groundwork for the newly established school counseling department that will offer students a more comprehensive, integrative toolbox and the knowledge of how to use that toolbox across disciplines, grades, and divisions. The new counseling department is comprised of four counselors, all of whom are licensed professionals with master's degrees in school counseling: Judy Arnold, who will assume the leadership role for the department as well as maintain her role as Lotspeich counselor, Upper School
counselor Vicky Hausberger, Doherty counselor Angie Bielecki, and Middle School counselor Samantha Laffoon. Bielecki and Laffoon joined the department in the fall of 2016. In preparation for the work of the new department, Arnold and her counseling colleagues attended summer workshops and learning programs at schools across the country during the summer of 2016. While carrying out their regular responsibilities of direct and group instruction within their respective divisions, the team, under Arnold’s leadership, will focus on building a more comprehensive program in social and emotional learning, which will be researched throughout the 2016-17 year, with a goal to implement more programs in the 2017-18 school year. “There is such a great overlap between social-emotional health and everything we do every day at Seven Hills,” said Arnold, who became the department head of the new counseling program at the start of the 2016 school year. “We want all of our students to feel they have the resources they need to make mindful decisions throughout their day, connect with the right people when they need to, and maintain open and consistent communication with family and friends.” While the concept of mindfulness—the awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment—is not new, school counselors and teachers who understand the benefits of it are increasingly infusing their school culture with opportunities for students and teachers to practice it. The counseling department recently presented a Creating Conversations speaker session on the subject in midOctober.

Arnold’s vision is for all four counselors to work to infuse all aspects of students’ school experience with the five pillars of social and emotional learning,
which include self-management, selfawareness, responsible decision-making, social awareness, and relationship skills. “We want our students to be able to recognize the influence their emotions have on their behavior, manage stress, empathize with others, and make respectful choices,” said Arnold. “We have always addressed social and emotional health, but with our new department and a full-time counselor dedicated to each grade division, we will focus on more intentional, coordinated direct instruction for the students.” A student’s mindset—the way he views new situations, changes, and unexpected difficulties—can shape the way he responds, and, ultimately, the way he handles other circumstances in the future. For example, students who operate with a growth, or flexible, mindset may see obstacles and criticism as an opportunity to persist, move forward, and learn. Those with a fixed mindset may become defensive or feel they should give up. Fortunately, mindsets can be changed and children are at an advantage when they are given the right tools at a young age, said Arnold, which is why it is an ongoing focus for Seven Hills’ counseling department. In many ways, helping students build and maintain a growth mindset is supported through mindfulness, so the tools go hand-in-hand, said Arnold. “The latest research on the brain is very exciting for those of us who work with children, because we now know if we can inculcate the methods of mindfulness and cultivate a growth mindset early, it’s going to help our students in every other way,” said Arnold. “Through this comprehensive program, we want our students and families to understand that social and emotional learning is a lifelong process, based on the child’s development, and that there is always the opportunity for growth. We believe that a strong foundation in social and emotional learning will help our students know themselves, be aware of their choices, happier with the outcomes, and better able to handle the bumps in the road that are part of life.”

FINDING ONE’S SELF BY WORKING WITH OTHERS

Many students explore more than one path; others are hesitant to choose just one. But one of the most valuable resources available to Seven Hills students is what they don’t see. Much of the daily successes within the college counseling and Experiential Learning programs are owed to teachers and program directors’ abilities to make themselves invisible throughout the process so students can see themselves.
College counselor Lara Magdzinski said she and her colleagues observe an enormous amount of growth in individual students when counselors introduce “the

“From the moment we begin working with our students, we help them identify areas of strength and interest,” said Experiential Learning director Nick Francis. “As Upper School educators, we want students to discover the thing or things that get them excited and that motivate them intrinsically, to identify areas of interest that they can pursue beyond Seven Hills.” Beginning in ninth grade, students are paired with one of Seven Hills’ four college counselors, who work alongside them for their next four years in Upper School. Ninth and tenth graders partner with Francis to choose community service and Personal Challenge projects, as well as determine whether they want to pursue a Concentration in a number of interest areas.
