Dear families and friends,

In the words of one of our former trustees, Seven Hills is committed to “being the best at getting better.” Accordingly, last year, the Board of Trustees orchestrated a 10-month process of strategic planning. The process involved extensive surveys and focus groups among all the school’s constituents, as well as benchmarking Seven Hills’ performance, on a host of axes, against many of the finest schools in the nation. In February 2019, the Board unanimously adopted a new Strategic Plan that will guide our progress for the next five years. Here is a summary of our key objectives. Sustaining the Excellence of Our Faculty The skill and commitment of our faculty and staff are the most critical factors in shaping students' educational experience. To preserve our most precious asset, we must continue to offer competitive salaries and benefits, increase funds for professional training and curriculum development, and sustain a faculty culture that supports creativity and collaboration.

Building Enrollment to Maintain Our Margin of Excellence Retaining this superb faculty while continuing to build out the extraordinary breadth of our educational program will require spreading the cost of operating the school across a larger base of families. Over the next five years, we hope to rebuild Lower and Middle School enrollment and realize a net increase of approximately 50 students. Our strategy involves developing a sharper value proposition to differentiate Seven Hills from other local options, aggressively marketing affordability and financial assistance to a broader range of families, and leveraging our new facilities and expanding services to drive new revenue. Realizing Fully Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion To prepare our students for an increasingly diverse and interconnected world, we must not only sustain a healthy, equitable, and inclusive school culture, but also create new opportunities for our students to develop the cultural competency skills that will be so critical for their future success. This means, of course, continuing to diversify the faculty, staff, administration, and Board so that each population more fully reflects the diversity of our student body. It also means partnering with our students and families of color to better understand and meet their expectations. Finally, it means reviewing our curriculum, teaching and learning practices, policies, and communications through the lens of diversity and inclusion and identifying opportunities to promote cultural competency in our classrooms and among our students.

Civic Engagement In a world rife with complex, interconnected global challenges, schools like Seven Hills have a responsibility to produce engaged, empathetic young people, committed to using their talents to improve the lives of others. To achieve this objective, we will develop a host of new curricular and co-curricular experiences to foster global awareness, civic engagement, and meaningful interdisciplinary problem-solving.

4

From

Future-Focused Learning To prepare our students to thrive in a rapidly changing world, we must continue to adapt our curriculum and our teaching methods, to emphasize those habits of mind (and of the heart) that will truly set our graduates apart. Beyond those academic skills we already emphasize, we hope to make progress in four key areas.

Entrepreneurship A critical part of preparing students for adult-like responsibility is providing real-world experiences through work, internships, or social entrepreneurship. Accordingly, we hope to develop strategic partnerships to capitalize on, even more fully, the educational resources of Cincinnati for real-world learning. Digital Literacy 21st-century workplaces require familiarity with, and even mastery of, a host of ever-evolving digital tools. Though our students have a great deal of exposure to a wide array of technologies, we hope to develop a more systematic scope and sequence to ensure each of our graduates can acquire new skills as new tools become available. Innovation and Creativity For those who aspire to careers in technical fields, some significant experience in technological problem-solving will be a real advantage. We hope, therefore, to build out our STEM offerings to include high-end opportunities for technical problem-solving that fuse coding, engineering, and robotics.

CHRISTOPHER P. GARTEN HEAD OF SCHOOL

Health, Wellness, and Community We are living in an era when many young people face mounting pressure. To produce healthy, resilient, confident young adults, we must find ways to minimize unnecessary pressure and foster the social-emotional skills our students will need to negotiate the challenges that lie ahead. We hope, therefore, to sustain a safe, affirming school culture that fully supports students’ physical and emotional health and well-being, one that builds upon the strong sense of community that has always defined Seven Hills. Our strategy involves working with faculty and families to reduce student stress/workload and create a more balanced experience, refining programs in social-emotional learning, leveraging our new facilities and developing new activities to support one another, celebrating student achievements, and building community. Facilities Although the school’s facilities have been significantly enhanced over the last five years, there are still several areas where facilities constrain our programmatic aspirations. Though we don’t envisage a major facilities push, we have developed a list of low-cost, high-impact facilities projects which we hope to pursue as funding becomes available. Many thanks to all who, year after year, help to sustain the continuing evolution of this school. We deeply appreciate your support and involvement.

Best, Christopher P. Garten Head of School

Dear friends, On behalf of our dedicated Board of Trustees, it is my privilege to extend our sincere gratitude to the entire Seven Hills community. The 2018-19 school year was another very exciting year for the school, and, as always, your unstinting support was a huge part of all we have achieved. The Schiff Center (May 2019) This past May, we officially opened The Schiff Center, a 43,000-square-foot performing arts facility, with a 500-seat auditorium, as well as fabulous rehearsal spaces for our theater, choral, and instrumental music programs. After years of planning, we finally have a venue worthy of the talent and commitment of our student artists, actors, and musicians. In addition, The Schiff Center will provide a magnificent venue for the assembly programs, convocations, and special events that are so critical to building the uniquely inclusive Seven Hills community.

JENNIFER STEIN BOARD CHAIR

The Field House (August 2019) In August, we also celebrated the opening of our new 31,000-square-foot, four-court field house, built on the north end of Hillsdale Campus, adjacent to the new tennis courts. The new facility will be used by students in all four divisions, allowing multiple teams to practice or play games simultaneously and getting our student-athletes home much earlier. The Field House will also be used extensively during the school day for physical education classes and in the shoulder seasons (late fall and early spring) when inclement weather would otherwise have forced cancellation of games and practices. These two gorgeous new facilities are the culmination of a very exciting period in the school’s history. In fact, since 2013, the Board has raised and invested nearly $30 million to modernize classrooms and laboratories, acquire new instructional technologies, expand our playing fields and gymnasiums, and to build, now, these fabulous new facilities. Here is a brief reminder of what we have built together. Lower Fields (October 2014) A magnificent athletic complex, with hillside seating, two turfed fields for soccer and lacrosse, and a grass softball field. Taft Early Childhood Center (August 2015) A state-of-the-art classroom complex housing Beginnings Parent & Toddler Enrichment Program, a pre-kindergarten for 2-year-olds classroom, eight pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms, a muscle room, and extensive outdoor learning spaces. Doherty Renovations (2015-2019) Two new outdoor playgrounds; extensive renovations to Jones Hall, including the library, science lab, Creation Studio, and all Unit I, II, and III classrooms; to the cafeteria, gymnasium, and EcoGarden in and around Brooks Hall; and, most recently, to Haile Hall. Tennis Court Relocation and Upgrade (August 2017) Six new tennis courts, built adjacent to the track and Field House, replaced five courts on the south end of Hillsdale Campus, which were removed to provide the site for the new Schiff Center.

STEM Spaces (Ongoing) Seven new laboratories have been created for Doherty’s Creation Studio, Lotspeich’s Project Math, the Middle School’s Innovation Lab, and new engineering and computer science courses in the Upper School. We deeply appreciate all of those friends of the school whose generosity and commitment have made possible this significant investment. I am grateful to our dedicated administration and our forward-looking Board of Trustees for their vision, leadership, and generosity. I am grateful, too, to our Facilities Committee, led so ably by Dan Schimberg and John Silverman, for bringing these projects in on time and well under budget. And finally, of course, I am deeply grateful to all of the generous donors who, over the last five years, have pulled together to bring these projects to fruition. We literally would not be the school we are today without your support. As a trustee, of course, but especially as the parent of an alumna and of two seniors, I am so very proud of the ways in which Seven Hills continues to evolve. These new facilities are, perhaps, the most visible sign of that progress, but for those who know and love the school as I do, the most meaningful progress has been in the breadth and depth of the school’s program and in its abiding commitment to excellence in teaching. We are so fortunate to have in our community a school of this caliber, an institution so deeply committed to continuous improvement. Just last February, the Board of Trustees unanimously adopted a new Strategic Plan, an exciting vision for the future which will guide our evolution for the next five years. We look forward to working alongside all of you to help make this new dream a reality. In the meantime, my sincere thanks to all of you who have nurtured and sustained the growth of Seven Hills for the last 113 years. Best,

Jennifer Stein Chair, Board of Trustees

Our Lower School students addressed everything from civic responsibility within our neighborhoods to the global needs of those throughout the world, and how we all play a part in both. Our college counseling department opened doors for students and their families to meet face-to-face with college deans of admission. And our Middle School students used design thinking to build English language learning tools for Bhutanese refugees. Our athletic teams supported students through several individual career milestones. Our fine and performance artists shined on the stage and in our galleries, and our admission team facilitated a number of experiences and events that united our school community—like never before. We nurtured longstanding relationships and sparked conversations to make way for new ones. We held each other accountable and we looked out for each other. We listened, guided, and followed. Our observations informed our creativity and our innovations bettered our world. And as all of these discoveries and hard-fought achievements unfolded over the 205 days of Seven Hills’ 2018-19 academic year, we were all supported by teachers, friends, students, and families. In 205 days, we did all of these things. AND WE DID THEM, TOGETHER. In seven stories throughout this Annual Report, we invite you to take a look back at how we have come together for 205 days at Seven Hills.

FINANCIAL REPORT

Financial Report 2018-19

The Business Office of The Seven Hills School is responsible for the preparation, integrity, and fair presentation of the financial statements and other accounting information in this annual report. The school maintains a system of internal controls over financial reporting, which are designed to provide assurance to the school’s management and Board of Trustees that assets are protected and that transactions and events are recorded properly in the financial statements. The Board of Trustees, through the Finance Committee, comprised of trustees not employed by the school, has adopted an Audit Subcommittee that includes engaging an independent accounting firm, Mellott & Mellott, P.L.L., to ensure that the financial statements are accurately presented. The school has again maintained a balanced budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2019. In the strategic effort to maintain the affordability of the school, the administration, faculty, and staff continue to find ways to reduce costs while persisting to prioritize teaching and learning. Schoolwide operating efficiencies have been gained by increasing energy conservation, pruning unnecessary administrative positions, rethinking student-faculty ratios, and removing under-enrolled programs. The overall financial health of the school was again aided by the growth of the endowment, which provides funding for teacher salaries, financial aid, faculty professional development, and distinctive programming and technology. Both annual giving and capital gifts enrich every part of the school. Most importantly, these gifts bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of educating each child.

THE CULTURE OF OUR YEAR FROM THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL TO THE L AST, OUR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES CAME TOGETHER IN MANY WAYS. WE LEARNED TOGETHER, WORKED TOGETHER AND PL AYED TOGETHER. TOGETHER, WE ARE SEVEN HILL S. .

Doherty Campus Students on the Doherty Campus prepared and delivered sandwiches to those served by Open Door Ministry, an organization working to prevent homelessness and hunger in Cincinnati. Younger students decorated lunch bags for the meals.

. ,

Lotspeich Lower School During the holiday season, second-graders at the Lotspeich Lower School performed a selection of songs for the residents of the senior living facility, the New England Club. Students performed songs about December holidays, including Hanukkah, Christmas, and Las Posadas.

Upper School The Upper School’s annual Day of Service gave students the opportunity to help several organizations. In late October, students boarded buses and volunteered at various places in the area, including Matthew 25: Ministries and the Freestore Food Bank. Students came together at the end of the day to reflect and share stories from their volunteering experiences.

NEW FACILITIES

Dedication, Generosity, Community

205 days T O G E T H E R

FOR FIVE YEARS, OUR COMMUNIT Y HAS COME TOGETHER IN MANY WAYS FOR THE FUNDRAISING, CONSTRUCTION, AND GRAND OPENINGS OF THE SCHIFF CENTER AND THE FIELD HOUSE. UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF THE $20 MILLION CAPITAL CAMPAIGN, BUILD.CONNECT.INSPIRE., WE HAVE PL ANNED, BUILT, AND CELEBRATED. TOGETHER, WE TURNED A DREAM INTO REALIT Y.

The Schiff Center

Seven Hills celebrated the grand opening of The Schiff Center in May 2019. Immediately following the opening, the building was put to use, as the Middle

and Upper School choral and instrumental ensembles performed their spring programs in the theater. “The entire Seven Hills community has come to see The Schiff Center as more than just a performing arts facility, but really as the heart of our community—a place to build excitement and to build relationships with one another,” said Head of School Chris Garten. The 43,000-square-foot Schiff Center includes a state-of-the-art stage with wing and fly spaces to support larger theatrical performances and full-scale scenery. The center also features rehearsal spaces, a green room and dressing room, and three large

22

classrooms for theater, choral, and instrumental classes. In addition to classroom and performance space, The Schiff Center is a venue for students from all four divisions to showcase their work and experience speakers from around the community. Board of Trustees Chair Jen Stein called the opening of The Schiff Center a “milestone moment for our school.” She thanked the hundreds of donors who made the building possible and for their sustained and transformative generosity. “We did this, together,” she said.

The Field House

At Seven Hills, athletics are for everyone. With an 80% participation rate, 49 coed,

boys, and girls sports offerings across all divisions, our practice and competition spaces are in high demand. During Homecoming 2019, Seven Hills held the ribbon-cutting for the new 31,000-square-foot Field House, which offers more practice and game space for student athletes. The building’s four hardwood courts can be used for basketball and volleyball, as well as for physical education classes and practice space for winter sports. As many as seven teams can play or practice simultaneously. The building also features a multipurpose room and concession stand. “Now with more practice and competition space, we’re able to get students home sooner,” said Athletic Director Scott Willard. “The Field House is a game changer that significantly alleviates the high demand on our athletic facilities.”

COLLEGE COUNSELING PROGRAM OPENS DOORS

Intuitive & Individualized

T O G E T H E R

FROM THE MOMENT THEY MEET THEIR COLLEGE COUNSELORS AS FRESHMEN, TO THEIR FINAL HIGH-FIVE AS SENIORS, OUR UPPER SCHOOL STUDENTS WORK TOGETHER WITH THEIR COUNSELORS TO BUILD ON THEIR INTERESTS AND REALIZE THEIR SOCIAL AND ACADEMIC GOALS. IN INDIVIDUAL MEETINGS WITH THEIR COLLEGE COUNSELORS, STUDENTS RESEARCH COLLEGE PROGRAMS, LEARN HOW TO EVALUATE WHICH FIT THEM BEST, AND WORK THROUGH EVERY ASPECT OF THEIR APPLICATIONS, AND, ULTIMATELY, THEIR CHOICES. TOGETHER, WE CHARTED NEW PATHS.

Emma Shuppert ’19 Named Swimming State Champion

girls 200 free relay, girls 100 back, and the 400 free relay.

Swimmer Emma Shuppert ’19 gave an outstanding performance in the 2018-19 winter season, earning the title of state champion in the 100 back stroke at the swimming state tournament in February 2019. Shuppert helped lead the girls varsity swim team to fifth place at the state tournament, the team’s highest ever state meet finish.

Emma Shuppert ’19 celebrating her swimming state championship

In addition to coming in first place in the 100 back stroke, Shuppert came in second in the 200 medley relay, eighth in the 200 individual medley, and fourth in the 400 free relay. Along the way, she set several school records, including the girls 200 medley relay,

Varsity swim coach Brandon Williams coached Shuppert for four years during her time at Seven Hills. “Emma being named a state champion was an amazing end to her impressive swimming career at Seven Hills,” Williams said. “Emma worked hard and always gave her all. She was also a supportive teammate, who was always willing to help and cheer on her fellow swimmers.” Shuppert was recognized locally for her talents as a student athlete. She was named the girls Miami Valley Conference Swimmer of the year and was nominated for the Cincinnati.com Sports Awards Girls Swimmer of the Year.

T O G E T H E R

FROM THE MOMENT THE HOUSE LIGHTS DIMMED ON OUR FIRST PRODUCTION OF THE 2018-19 SCHOOL YEAR UNTIL OUR DEBUT AT THE SCHIFF CENTER L AST SPRING, OUR FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS DEPARTMENT HAS COME TOGETHER IN MANY WAYS. WE HAVE LEARNED THE ART OF CHOREOGRAPHY TOGETHER, SCULPTED TOGETHER, AND SHARED IN THE JOY OF WATCHING OUR CHILDREN PERFORM. TOGETHER, WE DAZZLED AND ENRICHED OUR AWESTRUCK SEVEN HILLS SCHOOL COMMUNIT Y. .

Cappies Seven students were nominated for Cappies Theater Awards for their work in their fall 2018 Upper School musical, “Grease.” The Cappies Gala took place in late May at the Aronoff Center. The prestigious Cappies awards are described as a high school version of the Tony Awards. Seven Hills received nominations in several categories, including Marketing & Publicity, Props, Featured Actor in a Musical, Female Dancer, Female Vocalist, Male Vocalist, and Supporting Actress in a Musical.

.

Ohio Junior Thespian Conference

Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Two freshmen and one sophomore instrumentalists advanced to the semifinal round of the Cincinnati Arts Association Overture Awards competition in February. The Overture Awards competition is the largest solo arts event of its kind in Cincinnati, where students compete in the categories of creative writing, dance, instrumental, music, theatre, visual art, and vocal music.

.

Carnegie Hall

Members of the Seven Hills Chorus made their performing debut in Carnegie Hall in late May. The singers performed marvelously and were rewarded with a lively standing ovation after the final notes of Morten Laudridsen’s “Lux Aeterna,” and William Menefield’s “Prism” rang out. Fine and performing arts chair Tina Kuhlman said, “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bond over this music with people from different ages and backgrounds coming together and creating a truly musical experience in the world’s most famous concert hall.”

In an extraordinary achievement, 30 Middle and Upper School students received recognition from the prestigious 2019 Scholastic Writing Awards this year. Seven of those students received top recognition in their categories, and one student’s animated film won a Gold Key and American Visions Award. Seven Hills competed in the Southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and Southeastern Indiana region. . ,
