Chris Garten

Dear Seven Hills Community,

On behalf of our students and their families and our entire faculty and staff, I want to thank you for your support during the 2020-21 school year. In spite of the challenges associated with the pandemic, it was a remarkably successful year for Seven Hills. Academic Recognition and College Admissions For the second year in a row, Niche.com named Seven Hills as one of the top two College Preparatory Schools in Ohio and, for the first time ever, the Cincinnati Business Courier named all three of our school divisions, Lower, Middle, and Upper, as the Best Schools in Cincinnati.

Moreover, our students have continued to distinguish themselves, by every conceivable measure. More than 150 students took a total of 354 AP tests, with 92% achieving college-credit-granting scores of three or above. In addition, 102 students were named Advanced Placement Scholars. And, during one of the most competitive years ever in college admissions, our 87 graduating seniors have earned admission to an impressive array of colleges and universities. At a time when schools across the country have struggled with significant "learning loss," we have been able to sustain our rigorous and engaging academic program. STRATEGIC PROGRAM INITIATIVES

In addition, the administration, faculty, and staff have continued to work on many of the program initiatives enumerated in the Strategic Plan of 2019. In 2020-21, year two of our five-year plan, we have been working on: Faculty Excellence Continuing efforts to provide competitive salaries and benefits to help Seven Hills compete aggressively in the national marketplace for the best teachers available. Significant resources allocated for on-going professional training and curricular innovation. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Enhancements to Doherty’s Creation Studio and new Robotics and Engineering courses, Lotspeich’s Project Math program, the Middle School’s Innovation Lab and coding electives, and the Upper School’s vast array of elective courses in science, mathematics, computer science, and engineering. Civic Engagement and Global Awareness

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

This year's AIM process built on Seven Hills’ decades-old commitment to diversity and inclusion. After gathering stakeholder perspectives from more than 1,000 students, faculty and staff, parents, and alumni, the Board recommitted to a series of efforts designed to prepare our students for an increasingly diverse and interconnected global community. These include: continuing to build the

diversity of the student body; recruiting a more diverse administration, faculty, and staff; providing on-going faculty training; enriching the curriculum by exploring the rich diversity of human experience and viewing the world from a variety of perspectives; and designing mechanisms to empower students to help sustain a truly inclusive school community. Health and Wellness Program enhancements in counseling, learning support, college counseling, and health education, and for 2021-22, a new relationship with MindPeace, to provide on-site access to licensed mental health providers.

Co-Curricular Programs New programs in athletics, the fine and performing arts, enrichment clubs and activities, and enhancements to the Experiential Learning Program, including several new May Terms, Concentrations, and the launch, in 2021-22, of the Civic Engagement Seminars. Final Word In challenging times like this, I am especially grateful for this Seven Hills community. We are so fortunate to have the resources we have, not only material and technological, but the huge reserves of energy and expertise upon which we can draw. I appreciate, more than I can adequately convey, the confidence so many of you have expressed in our leadership team, our faculty and staff, and in our students. Working together, we have surmounted these unprecedented challenges and will, I have every confidence, emerge from them in an even stronger position. Warmly,

Christopher P. Garten Head of School

Dear Seven Hills Friends and Families, As Chair of Seven Hills’ Board of Trustees, it has been my privilege to help guide the school through another enriching and productive year.

FP

In a year largely defined by the pandemic, we can all be incredibly proud of how well the school community pulled together to support our students and their families. Thanks to the efforts of a talented administrative team, supported by a dedicated and committed faculty and staff, Seven Hills was able to provide a robust in-person learning experience for the entire 2020-21 school year.

Enrollment Growth In addition, because of the school’s remarkable success in navigating these unprecedented challenges, Seven Hills has experienced record gains in enrollment, including a mid-year infusion of 22 new students, a near record enrollment of 168 new students for 2021-22, and the lowest attrition in the school’s history. Facilities Enhancements Critical to Seven Hills’ success has been our spacious, well-equipped campuses and state-of-the art technological resources. The new Schiff Performing Arts Center and new Field House, as well as the extensive renovations at the Doherty campus to Haile and Jones Halls and to the Brooks Hall cafeteria and gymnasium, and, on the Hillsdale campus, to the Founders Hall cafeteria, the Hillsdale Commons, and the Donovan Arts Center, have all helped support a safe and effective learning experience, even in this era of social distancing. Moreover, in April, after another successful fundraising effort, the Board of Trustees authorized a significant renovation and expansion of our Middle School academic building. The new facility, which is rising now, even as I write, will contain 19 classrooms and laboratories, each nearly double the size of the existing spaces. These new classrooms will be arranged into three grade-level communities, each with its own gathering areas, to support close relationships among students and teachers at each grade level. Overall, the new facility, which we expect to be completed by April 2022, will support the engaging, student-centered learning that distinguishes our Middle School program. What an exciting time it is to work alongside our able Board of Trustees and legions of other volunteers, to support the growth of this extraordinary school! I want to thank everyone who has supported the school’s efforts so generously again this year. Seven Hills is truly blessed to have the support of so many deeply committed donors and volunteers. You are all a huge part of everything we have achieved!

Best,

Stephen J. Baggott Chair, Board of Trustees

HE 2020-21 SCHOOL YEAR BROUGHT UNPRECEDENTED CHALLENGES B U T A L S O A N E W S E N S E O F ST R E N GT H T H R O U G H CO M M U N I T Y. We leaned into a host of safety protocols to safeguard one another while, spurred by the shifting winds of the pandemic, the faculty and staff reimagined learning to sustain, as fully as possible, the close relationships that define this community. They mastered new technologies and invented new ways to connect with our students and their families.

FEATURE STORY

T

Buoyed by our early success, we welcomed dozens of mid-year transfer students, who came to us eager to join a community where learning was still engaging, innovative, and fun. Students and their families showed remarkable resilience, adapting to new routines and inventing new approaches to traditional school events. Doherty’s annual Cultural Connections Week, usually a week-long sojourn to a foreign nation, was re-imagined as a “staycation,” an intensive study of our own United States with its abundance of cultures and habitats and the rich history and belief systems we all share. Our actors and musicians mounted elaborate and moving productions, masked and socially distanced, but utilizing fully the resources of the fabulous new Schiff Center. The Prom was held in the open-air, under moonlit tents, with inflatable furniture. Our college counselors hosted dozens of virtual events to help our upperclassmen to explore the next stage in their journey. At the same time, building on decades-old commitment to diversity and inclusion, we fine-tuned our plans to prepare students, even more fully, for the world of tomorrow. And, after a decade of planning, we finally broke ground on a new Middle School facility, to support one of the most inspiring and innovative programs in the Midwest. It was a year filled with new challenges and opportunities, with excitement, discovery, and wonder. In the seven stories found throughout this Annual Report, we invite you to take a look back with us at some of the highlights of the challenging and rewarding 2020-21 school year. p

FINANCIAL REPORT

Financial Report 2020-21

The Business Office of The Seven Hills School is responsible for the preparation, integrity, and fair presentation of the financial statements and other accounting information in this annual report. The school maintains a system of internal controls over financial reporting, which are designed to provide assurance to the school’s management and Board of Trustees that assets are protected and that transactions and events are recorded properly in the financial statements. The Board of Trustees, through the Finance Committee, comprised of trustees not employed by the school, has adopted an Audit Subcommittee whose duties include engaging an independent accounting firm, Mellott & Mellott, P.L.L., to ensure that the financial statements are accurately presented. The school has again maintained a balanced budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2021. In the strategic effort to maintain the affordability of the school, the administration, faculty, and staff continue to find ways to reduce costs while persisting to prioritize teaching and learning. Schoolwide operating efficiencies have been gained by increasing energy conservation, pruning unnecessary administrative positions, rethinking student-faculty ratios, and removing under-enrolled programs. The overall financial health of the school was again aided by the growth of the endowment, which provides funding for teacher salaries, financial aid, faculty professional development, and distinctive programming and technology. Both annual giving and capital gifts enrich every part of the school. Most importantly, these gifts bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of educating each child.

KEEPING LEARNING ALIVE

FEATURE STORY

Inquiry and discovery in the COVID era We returned to school in August, wearing masks, sitting behind plexiglass, and with a significant number of students learning from home. Life at Seven Hills was decidedly different. Still, though, our students continued to thrive during this time of transition as teachers designed innovative new programs and special projects to meet their needs. LOWER SCHOOLS ENJOY VIRTUAL VISIT WITH AUTHOR, ILLUSTRATOR DON TATE The Doherty and Lotspeich Lower Schools welcomed children’s author and illustrator Don Tate in late April, via Zoom. Over two days, Tate, who has written and illustrated more than 50 books, spoke to students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Tate also shared a presentation with Lower School faculty titled, “Highlighting African American History Year-round.” “Don is so personable, and I've always loved his books,” said Lotspeich librarian Lori Suffield. “Much of his work focuses on positive representation of African Americans in history, which is important for our students to know.”

students are going to make a connection.” SEVENTH-GRADERS TAKE TWO VIRTUAL FIELD TRIPS—IN ONE DAY Although the seventh-graders were learning from home for three weeks in late November, Middle School science teacher Kristin Suer and math teacher Carri Haskins organized two virtual field trips in one day. Students participated in a Zoom call with Ken Freeman, the education and programming manager for the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum, and then, later in the day, heard a presentation from Sophia Herrmann, an aerospace engineer at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. “We have worked with the Reds and Sophia before, so we just called them and asked if they could work with us by Zoom,” Haskins said. Freeman asked students to use their math skills to create a fantasy baseball team using information from the 2019 Major League Baseball season. Students created a nine-person team after

Suffield and Doherty librarian Jo Schnirring rescheduled Tate’s visit to accommodate safety protocols. “Because Don’s presentations were virtual, Lotspeich and Doherty students were able to attend the same sessions, which allowed all Seven Hills kindergarten through fifth-grade students to have two sessions with Don,” Suffield said.

comparing players’ strengths, weaknesses, and salaries, and they presented their team at a press conference. Herrmann Zoomed with students later in the day. She discussed her career path and driving the Curiosity Rover on Mars. Herrmann attended the University of Cincinnati and studied aerospace engineering and completed co-ops at NASA.

Schnirring said, even through Zoom, students connected to Tate and his presentation, whether it was being inspired by his work and words, or learning a new drawing technique. “To me it’s one of the reasons it’s so valuable for our students to have experiences like these,” Schnirring

14

said. “We never know what, with whom, or how

“Sophia shared cool pictures and several students stayed through lunch to ask her more questions,” Suer said. “In the future, we’ll continue to meet virtually with Sophia because she lives across the country. Meeting with her virtually also allowed students to see amazing photos of her work much more clearly.”

THRIVING IN CHALLENGING TIMES: A LOOK BACK AT 2020-21

LEARNING THE LAW OF GASES IN UPPER SCHOOL Chemistry teacher Kylene Utah designed a number of classes around outdoor learning to several lessons, Utah’s gases unit was one of her students’ favorites. “The 10th-grade chemistry unit focused on how gases act and react to changes in external variables, such as pressure, temperature, volume, and the amount of a

FEATURE STORY

accommodate social distancing. Among

gas involved,” said Utah. “Each of these variables has a mathematical relationship to the other, so we can make predictions about how adjusting one of them will change the others.” Utah’s students studied Charles’ Law specifically, which explains the direct relationship between the temperature and volume of a gas. Utah’s students constructed a hot air balloon based on a set of instructions. Then, based on their initial observations, they redesigned a second balloon to make it float more quickly, higher, and more efficiently. They headed outdoors this spring, with balloons they crafted in teams. They tested their theories and hypotheses as they worked together. Utah designs her curriculum so that students can see it from different academic vantage points and synthesize the information in their own way. “I try to approach this unit by looking at each of the gas laws in three ways: theoretically, where students describe what's happening and make predictions; mathematically, where they calculate the measured values; and experimentally. This particular lesson was meant to encourage students to look at Charles' Law experimentally.”

COMMUNITY AND CURRICULUM

FEATURE STORY

Enhancing our diverse and inclusive community

26

In accordance with our mission and values and our decades-old commitment to diversity and inclusion, in 2020-21, Seven Hills used the NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) AIM (Assessment of Inclusivity and Multiculturalism) Self-Study process to fine-tune the recommendations of the Strategic Plan of 2019.

After gathering stakeholder perspectives from more than 1,000 students, faculty and staff, parents, and alumni, the Board of Trustees and school administration recommitted to a series of steps designed to prepare our students for an increasingly diverse and interconnected global community.

THRIVING IN CHALLENGING TIMES: A LOOK BACK AT 2020-21

FEATURE STORY

These included: continuing to build the diversity of the student body; recruiting a more diverse administration, faculty and staff; providing on-going faculty training; enriching the curriculum by exploring the rich diversity of human experience and viewing the world from a variety of perspectives; and designing mechanisms to

empower students to help sustain a truly inclusive school community. As part of this initiative, in May, the Board of Trustees adopted a Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and a new Strategic Plan for DEI. These new commitments will guide Seven Hills’ efforts in the coming years. As a key first step, after a nationwide search, Seven Hills hired Racheal Quinn as its new Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. “With the hiring of Racheal Quinn and the strong support team of diversity coordinators we have gathered around her, we are all optimistic that we will see significant progress in this area,” said Garten in a recent letter to the school community. “Ultimately, though, it will be our collective responsibility, as a faculty and staff, to work together to bring this vision to life.”

COLLEGE COUNSELING

Seven Hills’ College Counseling program: Zooming through a challenging year Throughout the 2020-21 school year, Seven Hills’ College Counseling Department leveraged the power of videoconferencing, to create new opportunities for students and their families to search for “best fit” colleges. Again this year, students who applied to college benefitted from Seven Hills’ strong academic reputation, demonstrated, most powerfully, in the Academic Profile published annually by the College Counseling office. In an average year, for example, approximately 150 students take 330 Advanced Placement exams, earning college-credit granting scores of 3-or-above on 93% of the exams.

as evenings with deans of various colleges. This gave students and parents more opportunities to interact with admissions officers from a number of colleges and universities. “This unique year spurred us to reinvent our counseling program, expanding our digital reach by creating grade-specific Schoology groups, to share articles, updates, newsletters, videos, and presentations with students and parents in these groups,” said Assistant Director of College

Assistant Head of School and Director of College Counseling Susan Marrs said that, ironically, the unique challenges of the school year provided some new opportunities for this year’s senior class. “We worried that our relationships with those students, who learned remotely for part or all of the year, might suffer, but it turned out that scheduling regular, individual Zoom meetings with them— beginning last spring and continuing through the summer and this year—let us really get to know and be helpful to them in much the way that our faceto-face meetings work normally,” said Marrs. “Zoom also turned out to be more convenient for many parents than coming to school for an individual meeting with their child’s college counselor or attending a group parent meeting.” Marrs said parent turnout at College Counseling events has never been as high as it was throughout the 2020-21 school year. The momentum in parent turnout created an increase in interest for additional parent-focused events, which were hosted via videoconference. Zoom also created a convenient way for the College Counseling Department to host several live, virtual “Coffee with a College Counselor” meetings as well

THRIVING IN CHALLENGING TIMES: A LOOK BACK AT 2020-21

Throughout the year, Upper School students were able not only to meet via Zoom with college admissions officers who read applications, but they also had several opportunities to ask questions in a small environment. By April, it was clear to see that the resilience of the college counseling team and the students and families had resulted in another banner year.

“This was arguably the most challenging year for college admissions professionals and the most stressful year in college admissions for all seniors across the country,” said Catalan. “Despite this, our students were admitted to an incredible variety of institutions, and, most importantly, they are optimistic about the coming year and thrilled about where they are headed. I was proud of how nimble and determined our department and our students were throughout this year. While we had to move many of our interactions with students and parents onto Zoom or into unique venues, we continued to provide the college counseling that families have come to expect from our department, and increased digital engagement made us and the colleges more accessible.”

Student leaders help craft new civic engagement seminar program Inspired by the success of the Upper School’s inaugural Civic Engagement Day surrounding the 2020 presidential election, two senior leaders worked with the Upper School faculty to plan another special seminar. This fall, Student Senate President Caroline Routh ’21 and Vice President Annie Icenhower ’21 approached the Upper School administration about organizing a Civic Engagement seminar focused on racial justice and inequality in the U.S. “The first Civic Engagement Day was really important to us,” Routh said. “We felt that it was beneficial to take time out of our school day to address [the presidential election]. We felt that the same should be done for racial justice following the events of summer 2020.” Routh and Icenhower spoke to Director of Experiential Learning Nick Francis about planning the day, which was held in spring 2021. They also worked with the Student Government’s Equity and Justice Committee and Club Jedi to design an agenda and activities. In the morning, keynote speakers for the event, Seven Hills parent and Board of Trustee member Chuck Mingo and Molly Shack, co-executive director of the Ohio Organizing Collaborative, presented an overview of racial bias, including personal, interpersonal, institutional, and structural biases. “Chuck and Molly engaged the students with information and activities surrounding issues of racial inequality in the U.S.,” Francis said. “Credit also goes to our students for asking great questions and engaging with such challenging issues. I heard from many teachers that the students made productive use of the time after the presentation to explore possible action steps.” Following Shack and Mingo’s presentations, students broke into several discussion groups. Upperclassmen served as teaching assistants, facilitating discussions about racial justice and related topics, including socioeconomics and education. Students also

52

received worksheets of possible action items, learning, for example, how to contact an elected official or other mechanisms to make an impact on their own communities and beyond. “It’s important to understand that while sometimes we think it’s an equal playing field, it’s not,” Icenhower said. She added, “As students, we’re learning to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. It is necessary and crucial, now more than ever, to bring up these issues and not just in the school setting. I would encourage my friends, classmates, peers, and families of Seven Hills to take the time and address what’s happening in the current world.” Head of Upper School Matt Bolton said diversity, equity, and inclusion are on the minds of many people today. Seven Hills students and teachers are examining these issues at both the national and local levels. He noted the second Civic Engagement Day grew out of student interest and enthusiasm to learn about current events affecting the United States. “It's really inspiring to see students advocating for these kinds of conversations and programs,” Bolton said. “I think that we have a lot of momentum in the area of civic engagement, and that our students are actively looking for ways to better understand the world around them, and the role that they might play in making that world a little better.” Bolton acknowledged that, in addition to students and faculty, Civic Engagement Day is also made possible by the E.E. Ford Foundation. In 2019, the foundation awarded the Upper School a $250,000 matching grant to develop a Civic Engagement seminars program. “I want to thank the E.E. Ford Foundation for funding this, and thanks to all of the faculty for the work they’ve done, and to the students for the energy and the passion and the buy-in they’ve shown from the get-go,” Bolton said in the fall.

Seven Hills’ Arts Program flourished in 2020-21 Led by the school’s superb performing and visual arts faculty, Seven Hills’ student artists met the challenges of the new year head on, taking creative risks in art studios and on stages, and supporting one another throughout a dynamic school year.

learning their way around green screen technology, or trying their hand at metal pouring, Middle and Upper School visual artists worked together, remotely and in-person, to thrive in Elissa Donovan, Daniel Vance, and Jason Knarr’s art classes.

Lower School music teachers Maria Eynon and Robin Wilson adopted a host of new safety protocols, but without missing a beat, they structured new activities to sharpen students’ understanding of rhythm, pitch, and increasingly complex harmonies. Working with movement, voice, recorders, and Orff instruments, students learned how to express themselves with confidence and skill. "Throughout the school year, our students have graciously navigated a number of safety protocols and pressed on with determination, regardless of the obstacles before them," said Fine and Performing Arts

Kuhlman applauded all fine and performing arts students for their efforts and unwavering creativity, despite extensive safety protocols. “Through it all, our students have become more inspired visual artists, more intuitive performers and producers, and stronger vocalists and instrumentalists throughout this process,” said Kuhlman. “I am grateful for such generous colleagues and friends, and for our hard-working students."

Stingers excel in tournament competition In 2020-21, Seven Hills’ student athletes broke records, competed in and placed first at state tournaments, and demonstrated leadership, whether it was on the court, the field, the course, the track, or in the pool. “Our student athletes were faced with unique circumstances this year,” said Athletic Director Scott Willard. “Throughout schedule changes, canceled games, and even a delayed winter season, they displayed resilience and competed with passion that made us all proud.”

The golf team traveled to the State Tournament, finishing ninth. Junior Jacob Joffe placed seventh at State as an individual and was named the Sectionals and District champion. He placed second in the Miami Valley Conference and earned a spot on the All-Ohio, Second Team.

FALL SEASON The boys and girls varsity cross country teams competed at Sectionals. The girls team won the Miami Valley Conference (MVC) and the boys team placed second in the MVC.
