Congratulations and Best Wishes, Class of 2011! Jay Bachemin

A Brief Word from Chris Garten If it takes a village to raise a child, what does it take to raise 1000? It takes the tireless efforts of a dedicated faculty and staff, each fully committed to bringing out the very best in young people. It takes, too, unfailing support of parents, all committed to nurturing their children’s talents and nourishing their ambitions. It takes the energy and commitment of an army of volunteers who buttress the efforts of teachers and coaches and counselors throughout the year.

Seven Hills bid farewell to the 70 members of the Class of 2011 in commencement exercises June 3. By choice of the seniors, the commencement speaker was Thane Maynard, Director of the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden. Tributes to the class were given by teacher Sandra Smythe, parent Bruce Brown, and class member Virgilio Urbina Lazardi.

Hair Fair 2011

A record number of students and teachers—23—participated in this year’s Hair Fair in the Middle Commons on May 18, surpassing last year’s record of 20! The volunteers had their long hair cut to donate to Locks of Love, an organization that creates hair prosthetics for financially-disadvantaged children who suffer from long-term medical hair loss, and to Panatene Beautiful Lengths, which creates hair prosthetics for adults. The successful event is organized each year by teacher Theresa Keller. Our thanks to volunteer stylists Michelle Beamer and Team from Identity Salons.

Middle’s outstanding spring concerts!

Middle School Spring Sports “The Middle School boys tennis team had a great season while dodging raindrops,” said Coach Russell White. “They started with an away match at Sycamore and there were battles on all of the courts. We went away with the loss but we looked toward the promise of the future, knowing we had just played the best team on our schedule. Many individual and team triumphs followed as the team posted a 6-3 record for the season. The players really enjoyed finishing our season on the varsity courts where we hosted the doubles tournament. Many thanks go out to our team captains, Arjun Dheenan and Henry Chavez.” “The Middle School boys lacrosse team continued to build on its inaugural 2010 season,” said Coach Michael Collette. “The Gold team finished the year with an overall record of 17-4. They earned a number two seed in the Division II bracket at the Middle School State Championship in Columbus. This seeding placed them in the top 20 of all Middle School teams in the state—a remarkable accomplishment and a significant improvement over last year when the team was seeded in the page 15

Division IV bracket. At state, the team finished with a 2-1 record, their only loss coming at the hands of traditional Columbus lacrosse powerhouse New Albany. “The future also looks bright for Middle School lacrosse as our Blue team, consisting predominantly of seventh graders, went 7-1 on the season. Despite their inArchie Griffin Sportsmanship Award winexperience, these players ners Tucker Robinson, Maggie Gosiger. quickly picked up the game and improved tremendously throughout the season through diligently working on their stick skills outside of practice. “More important than our record was the camaraderie the team enjoyed both on and off the field. Lacrosse Coach Andy Routt and Assistant Coaches Mike Schnirring and Bill Waskowitz for their help during the season. Thanks, too, to Susan Robinson for her support not only during the season but in helping to get the Middle program started.” Girls Lacrosse Coach Katie Forster said, “The girls, individually and as a group, continually challenged themselves throughout the season. Moreover, the girls worked together, supported and respected one another, as was evidenced as the team came together to defeat Our Lady of Victory, Visitation, and tie Walnut Hills. Our co-captains really stepped up to lead the team, as Maggie Gosiger was our highest scorer and Nicole Malofsky fearlessly doubled teamed the opposing team in defense. We will take great pride in watching the eighth graders on the high

school field next year!” Middle School Athletic Director Roger Schnirring said, “Under the guidance of Coaches Mike Heis and Eric Wetli, the Middle School baseball team had a very successful season. They finished the year with an 8-3 overall record and 5-2 in the MVC. Highlights include wins over CHCA, CCD, Walnut Hills and Sycamore. In the victory over Division I Sycamore, pitcher Brian Goertemoeller recorded 15 strikeouts in seven innings. Brian Hills and Isaiah Daniels also provided steady pitching throughout the season. Infielders Alex Mueller and Max Even helped keep the 7Hills defense rock solid. The success can be attributed to a total team effort; with only 11 players on the roster, everyone contributed to a great season.”

Faculty News Science teachers and authors! Congratulations to Science Department Head/Middle science teacher Karen Glum and Middle Science teacher Jennifer Licata on publication of their chapter for the book Higher Education, Emerging Technologies, and Community Partnerships, edited by Melody Bowdon and Russell Carpenter and published by IGI Global. The teachers collaborated with Dr. Jill Russell, College of Mount St. Joseph; Dr. Dave Russell, Avian Research & Education Institute; and Jenny Wohlfarth, University of Cincinnati, to write the chapter on Middle’s bird program. The abstract of the chapter states: “This case study describes a partnership between the Avian Research and Education Institute, College of Mount St. Joseph, University of Cincinnati, and science teachers at The Seven Hills Middle School. This partnership enabled the teachers to implement a Bird Studies program and empowered the students to become citizen scientists. The partners used various technologies to establish and maintain an ongoing relationship between the field and classroom, so that students interacted with field ornithologists face-to-face and virtually via the Internet. In the classroom, students assisted researchers as they color-banded birds that visited the school’s wild bird garden. The students then monitored the banded birds, communicated with the researchers, posted updates on the class wiki, conducted biweekly bird counts and submitted data to eBird, created eField Guides, completed inquiry projects, and presented their data at a school event and a community bird festival.” page 16

A look at what’s happening at Lotspeich Congratulations to fifth grader Nate Rising, Lotspeich’s winner of the Ohio Mathematics League Contest. Fifth graders Mary Grace Ramsay and Henry Pardo tied for second place.

Cincinnati Opera captivated its Lotspeich audience on May 9 with a wonderful performance, complete with stunning costumes and sets, of “Opera Redux: The Magic Flute,” a 50-minute version of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s classic opera. The performance was sponsored by the Madame Binkley Assembly Fund, which was established by Lotspeich faculty to honor the late beloved French teacher Bonnie Binkley.

Fourth graders had a great time at the Reds game on May 19!

Another great performance came from the talented fifth graders who presented the musical Cinderella’s Secret Slipper, under the direction of music teacher Mrs. Wilson and drama teacher Mr. White.

Fourth grader Graham Davis, Principal for the Day for the week of May 23, challenged students to bring in canned goods on May 26 in order to gain the privilege of wearing a hat for Hat Day. Graham took the goods to Matthew 25 Ministries as a donation for the flood victims in the Mississippi River lowlands. page 17

A look at what’s happening at Doherty Wes Gardner, Amelia Moran, Gabrielle Nelson, Scott Williams, and Caroline Routh.

Four times this year, fifth graders participated in the Continental Math League. The following students received the highest accumulating scores: Jonathan Harsh (top score), Nicholas Williams, Tindar Cyr, Robby Shaffer, and Lucy Callard. In the Ohio Math League competition, in the fourth grade, Ari Gleich, Eddie Hatfield, Drew Vecellio, Emma Fitzpatric, and Megan Young tied for the top score. In the fifth grade, Tindar Cyr, Lucy Callard, Will Graeter, and Jonathan Harsh received the top score.

Unit II students had a very special visitor on May 6—Suduko master Maki Kaji! Mr. Kaji, founder of Japanese-based logic puzzle company Nikoli Co., Ltd. of Sudoku fame, was in Cincinnati as the featured guest at the Japan relief fundraising event, “2011 Sakura Matsuri,” sponsored by the Japan America Society of Greater Cincinnati (JASGC). We are very grateful to City Councilmember Amy Murray for arranging this fascinating experience for our students. Fifth grader Tindar Cyr did an outstanding job representing Doherty in the WCPO Channel 9 Spelling Bee. Fifth grader Carly Jones was the Doherty School runner-up. Unit III’s World Summit on May 20 gave students the opportunity to “join world leaders as they share strategies to resolve the issues of Deforestation, Global Warming, Rivers Around the World, and Sanitation Solutions.” page 19

Mrs. Burton reported, “Alumna Kathy Moebius (’07), who is the aunt of Unit III’s Emma Fitzpatric, came to Unit III to share her experiences traveling to Africa and Cairo. Not only was she a tourist in these places, seeing three World Cup games and viewing the Sphinx and the Great Pyramids, but she spent a lot of time carrying out services to local villages, including buying several goats to provide milk, meat, and offspring to the poorest of families. Hearing of Kathy’s service firsthand made a great impact on the Unit III students, and we thank her for sharing her life-changing experience.”

Mrs. Wolfe said, “The 16 second grade students who completed the optional Poetry Postcards program by reading poems and completing assigned activities were rewarded with a Poet Tea in the Doherty Library. Each student received a booklet consisting of all the poems and projects completed this year. The following six students received an additional certificate for completing every postcard project without exception: Kylee Ellis,

The third grade Cub Scouts worked with Keep Cincinnati Beautiful, picking up trash along Madison Road. Fourth graders traveled to Dayton, Ohio, to visit the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center, a museum dedicated to telling the stories of the Wright Brothers and the poet Paul Lawrence Dunbar. The trip included a visit to the Brothers’ childhood home and one of their shops.

Another fourth grade trip went to Peebles, Ohio, to visit Serpent Mound State Memorial Park. The students learned about the Adena Indian culture and the so-called native plants that were actually brought to Ohio by immigrants from other countries. The highlight of the trip was walking around Serpent Mound and getting a bird’s eye view of the mound from an observation tower.

Two of Unit II’s student-created businesses. The first graders ended a unit of study of author Michael Bond with a Paddington Tea Party complete with scones and orange marmalade. Since Paddington was born in darkest Peru and traveled to London as a stowaway, mapping was part of this literature unit. Unit II students explored the LaBoiteaux Woods Preserve for plants in different stages of their seasonal or life cycles. Students saw how plants structures relate to function in different habitats.

At left, Mrs. Daily’s math students created a fun and challenging Estimation Carnival for all students. Below, Doherty’s dazzling annual art show features work by every student.

Unit II students earned “scholar dollars” during May as part of their study of economics. To culminate the unit, the students created, operated and shopped at homeroom businesses. Photos are at top right. This year Brownie troop #43964 discovered all things WATER! Every meeting and outing had something to do with water, and the Brownies posted Every Drop Counts signs throughout the school to encourage everyone to conserve water. The fifth graders had a great time on their trip to Williamsburg, Virginia!

Olympic Day (above) and the fifth grade–faculty kickball game (right) are great yearend traditions at Doherty!
