The Buzz
A Brief Word from Chris Garten
Author of Smart Parenting, Smarter Kids coming to Seven Hills Oct. 25
Last Friday evening at 10:00 p.m., our eighth grade students returned from a four-day camping trip in the North Carolina mountains. Accompanied by Mr. Waskowitz and the eighth grade team (bless them!) as well as outdoor education specialists from Adventure Treks, our students spent nearly 80 hours of uninterrupted time in their advisory groups, rotating through a series of leadership and team-building activities: hiking, climbing, orienteering, gliding down the “sliding rock” and, of course, setting camp, preparing meals, and getting to know one another in a totally new context.
Seven Hills is pleased to welcome Dr. David Walsh, author of Smart Parenting, Smarter Kids, as a kickoff to our new Creating Conversations Speaker Series, Thursday, October 25, at 7:00pm in Founders Hall on the Hillsdale Campus. Details on how to RSVP for this event are forthcoming. Visit our website soon to learn more.
This week, as part of an effort to process the experience, Mrs. Maupin has asked the students to work in teams to construct a “serial narrative” describing those aspects of the experience that were particularly meaningful to them. To prepare for this activity, students were asked to bring back with them one object that symbolizes for them the most moving experience they had: compasses, pine cones, vials of “white” water, etc. In their English classes, they are now composing group stories—literally passing their laptops from hand to hand—into which they will weave linked narratives centered around their objects. In this way, they will attempt to chronicle the impact of an experience that, we hope, will continue to enrich their school experience throughout the year. What a great way to start the year! Shane and the Astronauts When former astronauts Gene Cernan (left) and Jim Lovell helped launch the Neil Armstrong New Frontiers Initiative at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center on August 31, they were joined by Seven Hills eighth Children’s Hospital grader Shane DiGiovanna. Quoting from the Associated Press article by Dan Sewell, “The astronauts were joined Friday by 14-year-old Shane DiGiovanna, an aspiring aerospace engineer with a rare skin tissue disease. He is able to hear after a cochlear implant, with a device developed by a NASA scientist. Before the announcement, Shane, who said Armstrong has always inspired him, quizzed the two astronauts about details of their missions.” On September 5, Shane shared his expertise on Mars with all of the seventh grade science classes, who are studying Mars.

The Seven Hills School announces the launch of Beginnings, a new enrichment opportunity for parents and their toddler children ages 12 to 36 months. Beginnings is designed and led by Seven Hills’ team of early childhood teacher and counselor experts. Children and their parents will work together on a weekly basis as they explore, discover and create in an age-appropriate and stimulating learning environment.
and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more were 2012 graduates Sarah Austin, Isabel Arjmand, Betsy Johnson, Sharon Liao, Suhel Singh, and Jonathan Tiao. Their average score was 4.7.
The carefully-designed Beginnings program will be rich with experiences focused on developing motor skills, exploration of early language and literacy, and encouraging socialization. Parents will gain insight and resources from early childhood experts to help guide their children at home. In addition, Beginnings at Seven Hills will serve as an opportunity for parents to network and share experiences with each other and our early childhood experts. “Research proves that children learn faster in the first five years of their life than any other time,” said Julie Brackett, Director of the Beginnings program. “Children really are sponges at this age. We see our new Beginnings program as a chance to partner with parents and guide them through this journey. We believe it will help prepare children for a lifetime of learning.” The 12-week Beginnings sessions are being offered on both campuses with a choice of these days: Thursday on the Hillsdale Campus; Friday on the Doherty Campus (Wednesday at Doherty is full). Fall semester starts September 17, with the next semester starting in January. To accommodate the needs of families, the Hillsdale Campus will offer a one-hour session, and the Doherty Campus will offer a two-hour session. The program is open to the public and space is limited. For more information and to register, visit www.7hills. org/beginnings or call 513-728-2336 to check on space availability. Registrations for fall and spring session are being accepted. A 10% discount will be offered to families who register for the entire year.

It was a busy, professionally-enriching summer for Seven Hills teachers! Thanks to new endowment funds secured by The Critical Assets Campaign, Seven Hills has doubled its annual budget for professional teacher training. We now have the resources to provide each year at least one professional development experience for each of our teachers! We are pleased to share just a few examples of our teachers’ professional development experiences this summer. Math Department Head and Upper math teacher Anne Ramsay, Upper math/science teacher Dr. Lenore Horner, and Upper math teacher Anna Works-McKinney attended the 28th Annual Anja Greer Mathematics, Science and Technology Conference at Philips Exeter Academy for one week. The primary emphasis of the conference was the role of technology in today’s and tomorrow’s mathematics and science curricula. Dr. Lenore Horner presented at the 2012 GeoGebra Midwest Conference. Upper math teacher Melissa Khoo attended the weeklong conference of the Joint Statistical Meetings of the American Statistical Association in San Diego. Upper science teacher Barbara Scarr participated in an AP Biology workshop at Ball State. Upper Spanish teacher Teresa Barden went to Harvard to take “Teaching Foreign Language with Technology.” Master Chef Jimmy Gherardi and Food Service Director Jan Alford have been busy this summer, sharing Seven Hills’ healthy lunch program with national audiences. Jimmy, Jan, and Doherty Cafeteria staffer Barbara Christie attended the School Nutrition Association Annual Conference in Denver. Pictured discussing the Seven Hills menus with Chef Jimmy is White House Chef and Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives, Sam Kass. page 4

She also completed the Future Galileo’s program at the Cincinnati Observatory. Patty said, “I attended three classes that covered the uses of telescopes and programs that support the teaching of the solar system and space. I then taught three programs that focused on solar viewing which included participating in teaching the public at the Observatory during the Transit of Venus in June.” Doherty Unit II teacher Joan Claybourn and first grade teachers Kirby Schuchter and Amy Kulhavik participated in the weeklong course at Springer School and Center, “A Multi-Sensory Approach to Reading Success (MARS).” Lotspeich PE teacher and Athletic Coordinator Katie Forster continued her work toward an M.Ed. at Xavier with the courses, “Crisis Intervention in Schools” and “Special Education: Identification and Issues.” Lotspeich Spanish teacher Megan Hayes participated in the International Forum on Language Teaching, a hands-on conference showcasing strategies of comprehension-based language instruction, in Breckenridge, CO. Lotspeich fourth grade teacher Melissa Woodard continued her M.Ed. graduate work at Xavier with the courses
“Teaching Reading to Children with Special Needs,“ “Children’s Literature for Middle Childhood,” and “Phonics and Foundation of Literacy.”
Teachers create innovative curriculum The Critical Assets Campaign also endowed an exciting program to provide summer grants to teachers who create innovative curriculum units. The emphasis has been on collaborative projects that engage students in exploring the global community, in innovative thinking or creative problem solving, or in using educational technology for research and presentation. Since the program’s start in the summer of 2010, nearly 100 grants to design innovative curriculum units have been awarded to our teachers. Several of our teachers’ Summer 2012 curriculum grants are described in our publication, Semester in Review August 2012, at http://www.7hills.org/ yeartodate.

Seven Hills in China!
Upper students had another enriching experience in China this summer in the fifth year of the Downey Seminars. This is a program which Seven Hills, in collaboration with UC and supported through the generosity of the The Harriette R. Williams Downey Fund, offers a four-week experience for rising seniors.
Students spent the first week at Seven Hills learning the basics of Mandarin Chinese while studying fundamentals of Chinese history, culture and traditions. The students then traveled to Beijing, Liuzhou, and Shanghai for three weeks to experience firsthand life in Chinese society. Senior Carly Harten said, “My experience in China has completely changed my outlook on other cultures and affected many different aspects of my life. I learned all about a brand new culture and fell in love with both the people of China and their views on life. “We were able to walk through parks and see people working out on exercise equipment, playing hackysack, and singing and dancing. No matter what activity they were doing, it was easy to tell how much they were enjoying every second of every day and how truly grateful they were for the simplest things in life. I became much more grateful, not only for my mother’s home cooking and laundry, but for my house, my education, and my lifestyle. This trip has convinced me that I want to study abroad in college and perhaps explore employment opportunities overseas as well.” This year’s China trip was led by UC International Program Manager Ryan Meyer, Science Department Chair Karen Glum, and Chinese I and II teacher Peggy Lovro. Student participants were Caroline Bonini, Cullen Diemer, Anna Gagliardo, Caleigh Griffin, Carly Harten, Allison Hills, Hugh MacKay, Kyle Patel, Georgie Russell, Adeline Sawyer, Terrance Webb, and Elizabeth Young. With Peggy Lovro and her family relocating to another city, we are very pleased to welcome our new Chinese teacher, Yu-Chun Lin!

Early fall sports news The Seven Hills varsity golf team placed third out of 16 teams with a score of 323 in the Princeton Invitational August 14 at Glenview Golf Course. It was their first tournament of the season. Seven Hills and Anderson were tied at 323 after the top four scores from each team had been tallied; it came down to the fifth score to break the tie. Senior Alex Smithers shot an 86 to break the tie edging Seven Hills ahead of Anderson by one stroke. Two Seven Hills players shot in the 70s at Glenview—Pauley Gosiger with a 77 and Ben King with a career-low 79. At the CCDS Cross Country Invitational August 25, the Seven Hills girls team placed second overall, and the boys team placed third overall. Congratulations to senior Laura Gonzalez, who finished in First Place in the girls division, and senior Michael Bain, who finished in Second Place in the boys division.

Over 700 beginner to experienced triathletes ages 7-19 from over 33 states competed in 13 separate events at the USA Triathlon Junior and Youth National Championships. Debbie Marquardt, Matthew’s mom, said, “The 700+ athletes from over 33 states were a bit intimidating. They were trained triathletes with phenomenal bikes and gear, many with the support of training and competing with a team. Then there was Matthew, by himself, just determined to give it his best.” Matthew began competing in triathlons this spring, deciding early in the summer to sign up for the Youth National Championships.
