WELCOME
37 new campaigns. 279 new high school graduates. 9,500 volunteers. 350 preschool scholars. These may seem like numbers, but we urge you to look beyond the numbers to the faces behind them. To consider the “ripple effect” of what our work does. A high schooler is the first in his family to receive a high school diploma. He was on course to drop out but now, he is getting ready for college. Just think how that ripple effect comes into play. That child is changing not only his own odds, but that of his family, his future family, his neighborhood, his future workplace, his community, and his national economy. The 2013-2014 campaign year has been one full of wonder, pride and collaboration by so many dedicated people. With 37 new campaigns and over 350 United Way workplace campaigns across the Valley, companies are uniting for a better future for southern Nevada. These dedicated people share one thing in common; they have worked together to change the course of many lives. It is you who have caused ripples in the water. Every day we are reminded of the collective power we have, power generated by the joint efforts of so many talented people who give so much of themselves to create a better and brighter southern Nevada. With our sincerest thanks, we’d like to recognize each and every person who touches our organization. Whether it is by giving, volunteering an hour or a day, or by rallying others and advocating on behalf of our initiatives, it is your support that helps firmly build a stronger foundation for our community. This year, we have so many successes for which to be grateful. Through our combined time, talent and resources, we are shaping a preschooler’s education, so she faces better, more promising life outcomes. Without you, Holly would not have had the opportunity to start her two children off on the right foot. Both Gabriel and Lily are at Griffith United Methodist preschool thriving, thanks to our work in education. (See her story on page 5.) We are giving underinsured children a medical home, preventative care and immunizations. Leah would not have access to lifesaving asthma medication without having a lifeline to the Martinez Elementary Health Clinic, opened in the February of 2014. (See her story on page 7.) Fikreabe reminds us of how powerful knowledge is. He is learning how to save, this year saving $2,000 at the “Piggy Bank” and gaining financial literacy skills that will serve him an entire lifetime. Keep an eye on this young man, as he has his goals set high to be a surgeon one day. He is also teaching his parents about saving. (See his story on page 9.) Think of these three stories and the ripples that encircled these children as they get on their way with a healthier foundation and the ability to influence so many other lives around them. This strong foundation of support, partnership and belief in a better tomorrow has enabled us to achieve far-reaching goals in the areas of Education, Health and Financial Stability. The numbers of lives we have touched is staggering, but not only that, it is the fact that this influence has created a new path, a new future, a completely redirected route to success for so many people. We have seen perspectives change through transformative volunteer projects. To get out of our normal comfort zones and to work shoulder to shoulder with new people to read to children, beautify a neighborhood, or to assist someone through a complex tax preparation is life-changing, for the volunteer and for the community itself.
On behalf of your many friends throughout United Way and within this community, thank you for what you do to impact lives. Thank you for believing, for doing, for dreaming.
Sincerely,
Cass Palmer President and CEO United Way of Southern Nevada
Emily T. Neilson Volunteer Board Chairman United Way of Southern Nevada

We recruit people and organizations from around the community who bring passion, expertise and resources needed to get things done. Together, person by person, we can make lasting change. community impact education
propelling children forward with academic certainty In our local community and in alignment with United Way’s national goals, United Way of Southern Nevada is committed to securing more opportunity for all children, engaging families in their children’s academic journey to ensure a lifetime of success, and increasing teacher’s skills and proficiencies for greater pupilstudent engagement and learning. Our Mission To help all children enter school ready to learn, move through school, be career ready at graduation, so that they happily and positively contribute to the local workforce. Our VISION All children enter school at grade level or above, consistently close the achievement gap and demonstrate proficiency in reading, math and literacy by third grade. Our GOALS • Increase the percentage of childcare providers with access to quality professional development. • Increase the percentage of children with access to quality preschool programs. • Increase the percentage of families with access to family engagement training, activities and support systems to enable students to graduate.

HOLLY’S STORY
• More than 73,000 hours of professional development have been deployed, strengthening the skill base and competency of early childhood educators. • More than 23,000 pre-k students and their families have participated in family engagement workshops, contributing to more confident, healthier and happier families. • More than 45,000 high school students and their families have received information, support and resources to increase on-time graduation. • From our Family Engagement Resource Centers (FERCs), 279 seniors received their diplomas and graduated. (2014) Enrollment in quality early childhood education programs improves student performance all the way through on-time high school graduation by building a solid foundation for a lifetime of learning.
When Holly found out about the scholarship, her resources were stretched. Trying to write a dissertation with two active, young children at home was challenging. After Lily and Gabriel began attending preschool, she and her husband Jubal were able to focus on their career goals. “I am passionate about education. It’s a hard road but a good road to provide a better future for my family,” explained Holly. “My husband can also now pursue his dreams and has the time to work an information technology internship for two days a week.” Since attending preschool, Lily has now gained an interest in reading books and learned to write her name and recognize words and letters. “Lily wasn’t getting the social interaction she needed staying at home. It’s really helped her to come out of her shell and she has gained prekindergarten academic skills,” said Holly. “She has come a long way.” An active child, Gabriel is strong-willed and his verbal skills were behind. Holly works closely with his teacher to create strategies to help Gabriel focus his attention on learning. “He has taken a giant step towards verbalizing his frustrations instead of having temper tantrums,” explained Holly. “I am so happy with the outcomes for my family.” Gabriel is now learning different letters and numbers and has an increased attention span. “Preschool is so important for my children,” said Holly. “My children have learned the social skills of how to interact with other children and adults and gained critical social, cognitive and emotional skills. I am grateful to United Way for this unbelievable opportunity”

protecting children’s health through prevention and support Along with United Way’s national goal of increasing the number of youth and adults who are healthy, United Way of Southern Nevada is committed to ensuring that children in our community are healthy and have access to comprehensive healthcare. Our Mission To help all children have a medical home, and consistent, high quality preventative health care so that they may grow and thrive. Our VISION Children will have access to health care to successfully start and stay in school, creating a healthy cycle of life. Our GOALS • Increase the percentage of fully immunized children residing in southern Nevada. • Increase access to health care for all children in the school system. • Engage families in the healthy development of their children.

LEAH AND LILLIAN’S STORY Being in fifth grade can be tough, but imagine if you struggled with asthma and didn’t know when it would attack.
• More than 103,000 children, birth to age 10, received immunizations, protecting them from life threatening disease. • More than 21,000 children received preventative medical care from a family doctor, providing them continuity of care and a medical home. • More than 37,000 dental services were provided to families at no cost, contributing to overall health and wellness. Since healthy children are better prepared to learn and succeed in life, United Way’s volunteers, partners, community leaders and staff are focused on the strategic alignment of our Education, Health and Financial Stability Councils.
When Leah had asthma attacks her chest hurt and she couldn’t get enough air. “It affects me when I play sports,” said Leah. “I get dizzy and it made me stop what I was doing and visit a nurse.” There were days when Leah had to miss school, because the asthma just wouldn’t go away. On the brink of being homeless, Leah’s grandmother Lillian took her in when her mother lost her job. Unfortunately Lillian did not have insurance to help Leah access the asthma medication that she so desperately needed. Lillian found help at the Martinez Elementary Health Clinic, which reopened in February 2014 through the support of United Way of Southern Nevada and its Women’s Leadership Council. “The asthma is something I dealt with in my own children,” explained Lillian. “But hers seems to be a little more severe.” Lillian explained the Martinez Clinic welcomed Leah and was swift to treat her and provide access to asthma medication. “Everybody’s so awesome here! I don’t know what I would have done without their help,” said Lillian. “Basically I would have not paid my mortgage so I could get her into the doctors.” According to Lillian the process of finding help at Martinez was seamless and easy and Leah’s doing much better. “She went for a follow up and she is doing well,” said Lillian. “They are ready to take her for anything that I need help with, so it’s very important to us.” Leah now knows that if asthma attacks, she is prepared and she can continue on with her life without the fear of an asthma attack. “Now I know the medication is there when I need it,” said Leah.

FIKREABE’S STORY Fikreabe Getachew wants to be a surgeon when he grows up. Even though he is only 10 years old, he knows that it will take a lot of saving to accomplish his dream.
• More than 30,400 elementary school children participated in financial literacy education, showing a 41% increase (in ‘11-’14) in financial fluency. • More than $42,000 was saved by the students of Walter Bracken Elementary School through the “Piggy Bank” program (in ’12-’14). Aligning our community impact work in Education, Health and Financial Stability, United Way recognizes that it takes a healthy, educated child to become a financially self-sufficient adult, and that it takes a financially stable family to foster the health and education of its children.
When asked what he is saving money for Fikreabe proudly replied, “College! So I can become a doctor.” Fikreabe shared how he saved almost $2,000 in a year. “My parents give me money if I get straight As on my progress reports and report cards and when I do chores,” said Fikreabe. Created by United Way of Southern Nevada’s Young Philanthropists Society, Junior Achievement, Silver State Schools Credit Union (SSSCU), the Andson Foundation and Walter Bracken Elementary School to help children learn how to save, the “Piggy Bank” program also includes financial literacy classes that help children learn at an early age the importance of saving and the dynamics of money management. “About every month we learn about needs and wants and budgets,” shared Fikreabe. “If you want a regular phone, that could be a need, but if you want a new Iphone 5, that could be a want.” According to Fikreabe, saving money helps you to be prepared for the future. “If you don’t save money and you have to buy something big, you won’t have the money to spend for it,” said Fikreabe. As part of the program, Fikreabe’s parents even learned about budgeting and money management. “If you don’t budget correctly you’re going to run out of money in the end,” said Fikreabe. “I read a paper with my parents and they started to save money because of it.”

IMMEASURABLE VALUE While the Independent Sector has assigned an hourly value of a volunteer’s time, we view every hour spent as immeasurable.
Christy Rowley is a unique professional who looks forward to coming to work every day in her position as the Human Resource Manager for Norgren Kloehn, Inc. She began her career almost 20 years ago for the company that she described as committed to making a real, lasting impact in the community. “I love my career at Norgren Kloehn,” explained Christy. “It began as a family-owned business, was acquired by Norgren/IMI in 2007, and is based on caring for the needs of our employees and the community.” Born in the small town of Pleasanton, Texas, Christy relocated to Vegas 24 years ago. In her spare time she enjoys exercising, running, swimming, traveling and spending time with her family. For the second year in a row Christy had the chance to bring the employees of Norgren together to help the community through another remarkable volunteer opportunity. Last year she struggled to find an organization to create a hands-on corporate volunteer opportunity with a wide community reach until she found United Way. “United Way’s Community Engagement Team makes it so easy to help our community,” said Christy. “They do all of the planning and then we just show up and complete our project.” Through Norgren’s partnership in their second year with United Way, 800 deserving children at Hoggard Elementary now have the resources to keep learning, reading and science alive during the summer months and a refreshed garden. Christy chose to work with United Way because after looking at the organization’s work online she believed that United Way’s values echoed those of Norgren. “I thought it would be a perfect partnership to achieve our goals,” said Christy. To help children in the critical area of education, Norgren employees assembled more than 300 summer reading book bags, donating books and their time to assemble book bags for the students of Hoggard Elementary. “Knowing how many third graders struggle to read in southern Nevada, this assistance with summer reading book bags gives them another resource to help them graduate,” said Christy. The employees of Norgren didn’t stop there. They also assembled STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) kits complete with seeds and tools for science home projects to help keep active minds learning through the summer months. When the students return to school after their vacation, they will be greeted by a fresh garden courtesy of Norgren volunteers. “The employees thoroughly enjoyed being together and working on the project’” explained Christy. “It made them feel so great knowing that they helped children learn through the summer months and bring their garden back to life.”

With a passion for connecting donors to opportunities, Diane M. Carlson and William Freyd are a unique couple who together operate 1-2-1 Philanthropic Services and have become pillars in southern Nevada. Born in Chicago, Bill was admitted to the University of Chicago when he was 16 and then graduated from Georgetown University with a triple major. Diane grew up in Jamestown, New York and graduated from Denison University with a bachelor’s degree in political science. After teaching political science for four years, Diane began fundraising for New Jersey State College System. “I’ve been fundraising ever since,” said Diane. “I love that it gives achieving people an opportunity to give back and have a sense of belonging in the community.” Diane enjoys cooking, interior design and reading while Bill enjoys travel, yachting, classical music and producing and performing in musicals. Bill is a member of the Screen Actors Guild. He is also listed in “Who’s Who in America” and “Who’s Who in the World.” Married 30 years on May 19, 2014, the couple has three grown children and ten grandchildren. With a 20-year history of supporting United Way, Bill and Diane give to the organization because of its solid history and broad reach into the community. “It’s important to us that it’s a national organization with high sustainability,” said Diane. “We were looking to be a part of the community of southern Nevada and United Way has helped us to find it.” The couple enjoys networking and meeting with other Tocqueville members who are committed to meeting the needs of the local community. “My primary interest in becoming a Tocqueville Society member was to be a part of a group of leaders who wanted to enhance the feeling of community in the Las Vegas valley,” said Bill. Inspired by United Way’s community work in the areas of education, health and financial stability, Diane believes that one of the chief benefits of being a Tocqueville member is supporting an organization that makes a difference in the community. The couple believes that United Way helps to build a sense of community, promotes collaboration among nonprofits and allocates resources to the areas of the greatest community needs. “We don’t have to scout around to figure out where to give our talent or funds,” explained Diane. “We can do it through United Way and feel very confident that it’s going to be used where it’s most needed.”

United Way of Southern Nevada Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) promotes community involvement and philanthropic giving among women in our community with the purpose of furthering United Way’s Community-based agenda. United Way is in a unique position to leverage the collective giving ability of women leaders in the community. The Women’s Leadership Council is part of a national network of dedicated women philanthropists who have collectively raised over $1B in supporting United Way’s mission in the areas of Education, Health and Financial Stability. In southern Nevada, the WLC has raised over $1.6M in just seven years, investing their dollars in critical projects which are changing lives. From empowering

The vision of the WLC is to strengthen the social landscape by engaging women leaders to inspire others in taking action, creating long-lasting change in the community through Education, Health and Financial Stability. This influential group, led by volunteer cochairwomen Rhonda Clausen and Deb Mele-Blanchard, is forging the way to a better future through their gifts of time, leadership and financial support. The mission is to engage and develop our members to be leaders in creating impactful change in our community through Education, Health and Financial Stability. WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP COUNCIL IN THE COMMUNITY
The Women’s Leadership Council furthers the mission of United Way of Southern Nevada’s key impact areas in Education, Health and Financial Stability. Members of the WLC take action in improving the lives of southern Nevada’s children with their role in United Way’s Family Engagement Resource Centers (FERCs). The Family Engagement Resource Centers are located in five local high schools and target underserved teens who are at risk of dropping out of school. Through their involvement, these teens and their families receive support, comfort and resources to strengthen the homeschool connection and assist in keeping kids on track to graduate. This year, the WLC watched 279 teens cross the stage to receive their diplomas. The FERCs are located in the following high schools: • Clark • Sunrise Mountain • Eldorado • Western • Silverado In addition, in partnership with Spread the Word Nevada, the WLC sponsors “Breakfast with Books” once a month at Dean Peterson Elementary School. Families are treated to a light breakfast, a book reading, and a free developmentally appropriate and enriching book to build their home libraries. This year, the WLC “re-opened” the shuttered health clinic at Martinez Elementary School. Without their support, the clinic would not be able to serve almost 2,500 children with primary preventative care.
Rosemary West
WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP COUNCIL PROFILE Raised in a northern Minnesota small town by a communityoriented family, Rosemary West’s parents taught her at a young age to give her time, talents and treasure to others. Although she moved to Las Vegas with a three-year exit plan, Rosemary is passionate about the town she has now called home for 25 years. “I fell in love with Las Vegas when I got here,” said Rosemary. “I think it is the sense of community and being able to build something from the ground up. It can be very intoxicating living in Las Vegas.” Married for 35 years, Rosemary and her husband Joe have two grown children whom they have raised to also give back to the community. “I consider myself very blessed to have such a great family,” said Rosemary. Inspired by her parents’ lifetimes of community service, Rosemary describes herself as always present and committed to the community. “I work hard, love my family and want to accomplish something every single day,” commented Rosemary. With a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stout and a Master’s degree from Texas Tech University, Rosemary began her career working with limited income families but soon discovered her true professional passion. “I don’t think I chose this career it chose me. I love to create new programs and raise funds for them either through traditional fundraising or grant writing,” said Rosemary. On her bucket list is being a volunteer for the United States Track and Field Olympic Trials teams. In her spare time she likes to hike, kayak, exercise, attend college football games and entertain and cook. She is also crazy about her two basset hounds, Maddux and Smoltz, named after Atlanta Braves pitchers. As a founding United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) member, Rosemary joined to inspire a generational legacy of giving among women in the community. “I wanted to be a part of encouraging younger women to give because if you don’t start giving early, you forget,” said Rosemary. As an active member of the new WLC Program Funding Committee, Rosemary worked diligently to create a longrange plan to determine how WLC dollars are invested in the community. “We now have a cohesive plan that helps build a better safety net for the whole community,” explained Rosemary. Not only did Rosemary at one time work for United Way, she became involved with United Way as soon as she got her first job.

“I gave $5 per paycheck and never stopped,” said Rosemary. “I am a huge believer in payroll deduction as it allows me to invest in my community before I even see my paycheck. It helps me to give until it feels good.” According to Rosemary, the people who have been helped by United Way are those that we meet in everyday life, whether they receive educational services for their child, financial literacy education or healthcare. “We are a stronger, better community because of United Way,” said Rosemary.
WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP COUNCIL
2013-2014 women’s leadership council Each member contributes a minimum of $2,500 annually to United Way of Southern Nevada. During the meetings members network, evaluate the needs in the community and discuss how to best support United Way’s Community-based Agenda through their support and resources. United Way of Southern Nevada gratefully acknowledges the 2013-14 Women’s Leadership Council Co-chairs, Rhonda Clausen and Deb Mele-Blanchard and all of the committee co-chairs and members.

YOUNG PHILANTHROPISTS SOCIETY
United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN) recognizes and applauds the accomplishments and efforts of this dynamic group of young philanthropists. These leaders are passionate about creating lasting change in alignment with United Way’s Community-based Agenda goals focusing on Education, Health and Financial Stability. Young Philanthropists Society (YPS) is a membership group of donors who are committed through resources and time to give back to our community through philanthropic efforts, advocacy and volunteerism. Members of the Young Philanthropists Society benefit by increasing their community involvement, understanding the non-profit agenda and engaging in meaningful experiences that will prepare them for community leadership. This year, YPS raised over $118,000 for our community. YPS Mission
To make a difference in children’s lives through volunteerism, mentorship and events by harnessing the energy, commitment and diverse skills sets of the next generation of leaders.
To learn more about the Young Philanthropists Society, contact Liz Vohwinkel, Senior Director, Major Gifts at LizV@uwsn.org or 702-892-2344; or Danylle Hitchen, Vice President, Major Gifts at DanylleH@uwsn.org or 702-892-2317.
Launched on Oct. 5, 2012, YPS stewarded the “Piggy Bank” program as an innovative, real-world solution to teach the students at Walter Bracken Elementary School how to save and be financially responsible. A collaboration between UWSN, YPS, Walter Bracken Elementary School, Junior Achievement, Silver State Schools Credit Union (SSSCU), Andson Foundation and various volunteers, the “Piggy Bank” program includes financial literacy curriculum and a kid-friendly bank with a bank teller counter, a TV to showcase each classroom’s savings and decals on the walls with money saving tips.
The only program of its kind in Nevada for elementary school children, the “Piggy Bank” helps children to learn how to save and make smart financial decisions at an early age so that growing up they are armed with the knowledge of the importance of saving. The “Piggy United Way of Southern Nevada gratefully acknowledges Bank” program inspired the children to save over the 2013-2014 Young Philanthropists Society Co-chairs, $42,000 from October 2012 to May 2014. Even though Josh Swissman has a demanding career as the Vice President of Corporate Marketing for MGM Resorts International, the Las Vegas native still finds the time to volunteer and support education and the community. “I want Las Vegas to continue to be a great place to raise a family, have a meaningful career, deliver a strong community support system, and drive tourism to our great city,” said Josh. Josh began his career over 15 years ago as a front desk agent. “There is nothing that beats being able to put a smile on a weary traveler’s face when they are checking in.” Josh is an avid collector of all types of music and enjoys spending time with his wife Courtney and their dogs. Over the last decade, Josh has developed a passion for travelling. Heading his bucket list is visiting all seven continents. “I have found that experiencing different cultures from around the world lends great perspective and shapes how I live my own life,” said Josh. The biggest inspiration in Josh’s life is his mother. “From her I learned grace and poise and how to communicate, care and love,” said Josh. As a founding member of United Way’s Young Philanthropists Society (YPS), Josh is passionate about the United Way’s focus on education. “I am a huge believer in the power and potential that education can have on the life of a child,” explained Josh.
Josh Swissman
YOUNG PHILANTHROPISTS SOCIETY PROFILE
According to Josh, YPS members receive flexible options for community giving and volunteering. “I helped determine what organizations received funding, and I was able to volunteer when I had the time,” said Josh. Josh has seen first-hand how the YPS “Piggy Bank” motivates Bracken Elementary students to save. He remembered a second grader who became excited about saving when he decided to go to a Sea Camp. “He understood that putting money away every week got him one step closer to his goal,” recounted Josh. “It was transformative--that lesson was something that would never have been as effectively taught solely in the classroom. That’s powerful.” Josh’s most memorable YPS experiences happen during Nevada Reading week when YPS members read to the children at Bracken Elementary. “Seeing the curiosity and excitement in the children’s eyes when I interact with them and read their favorite book really gives me a sense of hope for the future,” said Josh.
He encourages his friends and colleagues to join him. “Start out now and just give a little of yourself to the organization,” said Josh. “I promise you, it will change your life and you will find yourself devoting more and more time to United Way in the future.”

Josh believes that United Way helps the community by focusing on the building blocks of a better life: education, health and financial stability. “By partnering with and enabling other great local organizations, it serves as a force multiplier to increase the collective positive impact we all have in the community,” said Josh.

With a shared passion for skiing and their careers at Boyd Gaming Corporation, both Rick Darnold and David Farlin have been United Way of Southern Nevada Leadership donors for more than a decade. A native Nevadan, Rick was born and raised in Las Vegas and attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the University of Nevada, Reno. Building pools during the hot Vegas summers helped to inspire Rick to graduate from University of Nevada, Las Vegas where he eventually obtained his business and accounting degrees. Subsequently he obtained his Certified Public Accounting certificate. Rick described himself as adventurous with dreams of taking an African Safari. He spent 15 years on the National Ski Patrol and was trained in advanced mountaineering search and rescue. When asked how he would best describe himself he said, “I like to leave things better than I found them.” With a Boyd Gaming career that began in 1988, Rick spent the first 15 years in finance and ten years ago moved to operations as the Vice President of Strategic Sourcing. Rick became a United Way Leadership Society donor when the program began in 1990. One of his early responsibilities for United Way was leading the efforts for Boyd Gaming’s leadership giving program. “The first year that we focused on Leadership giving, we were able to increase our leadership donors from 1 to 21,” explained Rick. “This exemplified our cultural values of giving back to the community.” Even during the recession when a lot of people dialed back their giving, Rick continually increased his gifts to United Way and four years ago, he and his wife Krista became Tocqueville Society members. Rick and Krista, who is also part of the United Way Women’s Leadership Council, donate both their time and money to a variety of charities including the United Way that make an impact in health and education issues. The Tocqueville Society allows them to consolidate and coordinate their charitable giving through one platform. Just as he had done over 20 years ago, he encourages executives to give to United Way. The couple got to see United Way in action when they volunteered during a United Way gift distribution to local families during the last Christmas holiday season. “I just saw the impact that United Way makes in the community,” said Rick. “United Way gives people the resources and the tools they need to become self-sufficient.” Rick and David are both inspired by Bill Boyd’s philosophy of giving to United Way, engaging employees in the community and taking care of their own. David was raised in Nebraska in a family of nine and came to Las Vegas for the first time in 1987. With a music and sound audio engineering degree, he got his first job at a Colorado ski resort in information technology and has since worked his way up through the ranks.
Rick Darnold and David Farlin
LEADERSHIP SOCIETY Spotlight
As the Vice President and Chief Information Officer, David manages the IT department that is proud to be the five-time champions of the annual United Way workplace “coin wars” at Boyd Gaming. A Leadership Society contributor for over 13 years, David increases his gift every year by the percent increase of his employees’ gifts. “Giving to United Way has become much more than writing a check,” said David. “Over the last few years as more people are in need it’s much more important that we all give back to our local community.”
Photo: Nick Coletsos
With a bucket list of horseback riding to the top of Machu Picchu, David spends his spare time immersed in music and concerts.

Growing up as an “Air Force Brat” and the third of six children, Sandie Boyadjian’s passionate determination is evident in her many accomplishments. Sandie was the former Mrs. Nevada United States 2005 and Mrs. United States Congeniality 2005. She has also excelled in her career, working her way up from a radiology technologist to the Director of Imaging Services/PACS at Centennial Hills Hospital. “Every day is different and that is what I love about my job,” said Sandie. “If we are really busy, I will put on my running shoes and take care of patients or assist my staff with transporting patients.” Currently pursuing her master’s degree in business administration with an emphasis in leadership, Sandie’s career goal is to become the chief executive officer of a small hospital. With a map in her office with rhinestones marking all of the locations she has visited, Sandie also has a passion for travel, photography, reading and scrapbooking. Celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary in September, Sandie and her husband have lived in Las Vegas for 23 years. They are incredibly proud of their daughter Gabrielle, who graduated with honors from Chapman University in 2014 and is following in her mother’s footsteps, competing for Miss California. Chosen to lead the United Way workplace campaign at Centennial Hills in the ninth hour, Sandie quickly enlisted the help of a teammate, Angela Ortega, and together they organized a successful campaign that raised $16,560.

Employee Campaign Coordinator Spotlight
This year, Sandie executed a new strategy and brought together a 12-person team of willing volunteers. She challenged each member to come up with a fundraising idea and empowered them to bring their own ideas to life. “With something like this, you just can’t do it yourself,” said Sandie. “You have to have people on your team who support you and tap in to their ideas.” As part of their campaign, new events helped to increase employee participation including a chili cook off, cook book, silent auction and Super Bowl pool. “For the chili cook off, the administrators wore hats and aprons and dished up the chili,” explained Sandie. “The staff could see that the executive team was on board.” Through their efforts, this year Centennial Hills Hospital raised over $30,000.
She is energized by United Way’s focus on creating change, bringing the passion, helping others, and getting things done. “Our United Way campaign brought all of the hospital employees together to help change lives.”

“We had a ton of fun with our campaign,” explained Sandie. “It takes the whole hospital community to be successful.”
