HISTORY of the WWII Memorial
In 2001, a competition was held to see who would design the memorial. The memorial raised 197 million dollars given in cash and pledges. The federal government gave the memorial fund 16 million dollars to help support the construction. The memorial was dedicated in 2004 .

Construction and design
It is 337 feet long and 240 feet wide. The WWII memorial has 56 pillars. The materials used for the memorial were granite and bronze. The designer was Fredrick St. Florian and the sculptor was Ray Kaskey. Nick Benson did the stone carving.
INTERESTING FACTS The memorial is surrounded by the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. There are huge flag poles surrounding the frame of the WWII Memorial. Most of the money that came in was by private donations. The memorial honors 16 million who served in WWll. The rainbow pool has lots of circle fountains on it.
