History It was built in early 1861 by John T. Ford in an abandoned Baptist church.

The theater was one day tragically destroyed by a fire in December, 1862, but was renovated and reopened in August, 1863. Two years later, tragedy struck again. On April 14, 1865… Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.

Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865 Abraham Lincoln and his wife, Mrs. Lincoln, were just attending a play called “Our American Cousin” in the Ford’s Theater. They were to be accompanied by General Ulysses Grant and his wife but they had to leave earlier than planned.
Assassination The show started and when Lincoln was watching the play from the balcony‌ BAM! He was then shot behind the left ear.
Assassination The wounded president was carried across the street to the Peterson house for medical help, but sadly it did not help. He died in the Peterson house the next morning at 7:22 am.
John Wilkes Booth The man who shot Abraham Lincoln was John Wilkes Booth. He was born on May 10, 1838 in Bel Air Maryland. John Wilkes shot Abraham Lincoln because he wanted to throw the whole country into a political despair. Some people say John Wilkes was very handsome.
