DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION • Felix de Weldon and Horace Peaslee teamed up to create the Iwo Jima Memorial. Horace designed the Memorial. Weldon molded the Memorial in clay then casted it in bronze. The Iwo Jima Memorial stands 32 feet tall.


HISTORY • The Memorial was built September, 1954,15 years after the war. The Memorial was dedicated by Dwight D. Eisenhower the, 34th president. The Iwo Jima Memorial is located in Arlington, Virginia, across the Potomac River. The official name for the Memorial was the Marine Corps War Memorial. The Memorial was paid for by donations.


INTERESTING FACTS • Joe Rosenthal took a prize wining photo of the flag raising at Iwo Jima . Felix de Weldon asked the three survivors to pose for him to sculpt the Memorial. All of the names of the soldiers who died in the war are inscribed on the base of the Memorial.


MEMORIAL • The Iwo Jima Memorial cost $850,000 all paid for by private donations.
