Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president. Because of his contributions, a memorial was created for him.  President Taft provided $2,000,000 funds for the memorial.  The memorial has mainly been used for protests and political rallies.  Lincoln was shot in April,1865 in Ford’s Theatre. 

Construction began in 1914.  Henry Bacon was the architect.  Daniel Chester French was the sculptor.  The statue was 10ft/3m tall.  The memorial was completed in 1922. 


The Lincoln Memorial Monument Association’s task was to build a memorial dedicated to Lincoln.  Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous speech in front of the memorial.  You have a great view of the US. Capitol and the Washington Monument when you are standing on the steps of the memorial. 
