WILLIAM JOHNSTONE FLEMING WYFOLD ART FOUNDATION, LONDON HOPE SCOTT TRUST FOR THE NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY, EDINBURGH SCOTTISH NATIONAL GALLERY OF MODERN ART, EDINBURGH
Marchlands, William Johnstone opened 2012 to much critical acclaim. William Johnstone was a pioneering abstract painter from the Scottish Borders and was Principal at both Camberwell School of Art and Central School of Art & Design from the late 1930's - 1960. Whilst researching for photographic material relating to the artist as a young man, a self portrait was found instead. The Scottish National Portrait Gallery told us that they had a book in their library called Jottings in a Diary: Ten Days with William Johnstone by Colin Still where this portrait was illustrated and was from a series of five painted in 1978. One art dealer said that they had been looking for this particular painting for over 30 years. The Fleming Collection were keen to acquire it as they had tried and failed a few years previously to find the missing Camberwell School of Art portrait that William Johnstone had given the institution in 1979. They understood the rarity and significance of the find. The Fleming Collection lends works both nationally and internationally which means that Self-Portrait is available through a range of exhibition and loan opportunities.

Mrs Hope Montagu Douglas Scott met William Johnstone in 1969; she was a widowed aristocrat who lived in the Scottish Borders who had amassed a picture collection of avant-garde work. Her effortless joie de vivre and unusual eye had a profound effect on Johnstone. She became a major collector and patron and also encouraged him to exhibit. She donated the significant Point in Time (c. 1929-1935), to the SNGMA amongst other works and so delighted was she with Edinburgh University of honouring her friend with a doctorate, she donated the majority of her art collection to the Talbot Rice Gallery before setting up the Hope Scott Trust. The Hope Scott Trust honoured the William Johnstone exhibition by purchasing Portrait of Hope Scott, 1975. The painting was then submitted and accepted into the permanent collection of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
