ONE DROP PLUS ONE DROP MAKES ONE DROP ADI TOCH 1 - 29 November 2017 The Scottish Gallery is delighted to present Adi Toch’s second solo exhibition at The Gallery as part of our 175th Anniversary year programme. Adi Toch’s practice as a metalsmith centres on making engaging vessels and containers that investigate colour, movement, sound and tactility. Following a BA in Metal at Bezalel Art Academy in Jerusalem, Adi completed an MA at the Cass, London in 2009. Her work is exhibited internationally and has won prestigious awards including the Gold Award from The Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Council in 2013. She was recently shortlisted for The Loewe Craft Prize and won a 2017 Wallpaper* Design Award. Adi is currently a lecturer at The Cass in London and a visiting lecturer at Bezalel Art Academy in Jerusalem.

For Adi, vessels and containers are an innate method of communication. Not only do they surround us in our daily lives, they shape our perception of the division between inside and out, the notion of moving from one framed space into another. In addition, the practice of making vessels enables her to work both with metal and space as materials, thereby redefining these borders. Beginning with a flat sheet, she forms and fabricates the metal using hammers and tools while her finishing techniques include texturing, colouring and patination. Through her work, Adi explores the morphological qualities of vessels and the process of embedding these objects with spirit. Her work is contemplative and communicates through its tactile essence - it begs to be picked up, touched and stroked.

‘Vessels convey a story of gathering, holding, storing – from edge to edge and through a division of inside and outside they form bounderies between material and space. Pouring vessels have the fascinating duality of being able to both absorb and give.’ Adi Toch, 2017

Vessels on Stilts reference amphorae and their metal tripod supports, and offer a playful interpretation of the aesthetics of museum displays. They respond to vibrations or touch with an animated quiver.

Patina is a surface layer created by chemical reaction. The unique surface of the following objects is achieved through experimental technique of metal colouring - each piece has it’s own distinctive vivid lustre which cannot be repeated. This serendipitous procedure contrasts the meticulous process of constructing the vessels.

Intended to invite interaction and play, Whispering Vessels contain substance like sand or tiny gemstones, which can be seen from the opening, felt and heard, but not emptied. The content is shifted as the vessel is moved, producing sound and creating illusive patterns.
