EDMOND BYRNE

ENSEMBLE 3 - 27 October 2018

Edmond Byrne initially studied Glass Design at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, before completing an MA at The Royal College of Art, London in 2010. His work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally and he has won a number of awards including the Dan Klein Memorial Bursary in 2011. Edmond has teaching experience in Irish and UK universities and has worked and travelled across the world attending workshops and seminars including working on the Dale Chihuly glassblowing team in the United States. Currently Edmond is Technical Tutor at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham. Edmond Byrne’s mould blown glass aims to evoke an emotional response in the viewer. From his large ethereal stacked vessels to signature sprawling tableaux, Byrne’s vessels use the materiality of glass to examine the science and psychology of colour. With Ensemble, Byrne moves in a new direction exploring the totem as a creative device for assembling ‘off cuts’ - glass parts that would normally be discarded during the making process in the workshop, collected and reassembled into exquisite objects. Byrne’s assemblages allow him to query the intrinsic nature of his own work by exploring the aesthetic parameters, structures and space between each component in an act of reflection and re-functioning. Due to the components being ‘off-cuts’ they possess a residual identity with their parent object in the exhibit. This creates a subtle interplay between the assemblages and the surrounding work, sharing the same genetic code, born of the same mother-object.

‘I blow glass into moulds to create tactile surfaces. The moulds are made from a variety of materials such as clay, fabrics and metal and can only be used once. The activity of making the moulds is an equally important part of the creative process as they cause the textures to form on the vessels. I also use sodium silicate to create sand shell moulds. The moulds are inspired by my drawings; I draw first and then translate the marks, energy and gestures into three dimensional moulds.’

‘Through glass blowing processes I explore colour, texture and form to make glass vessels that induce an emotional response in each viewer. I use subtle, semi-transparent colours in my work. Much of my work has a kaolin (natural clay) and water patina to create crazing and an ageing effect.’
