JOANNE THOMPSON LINK FROM THE GREENHOUSE

JOANNE THOMPSON LINK 6 - 30 June 2018

The Scottish Gallery presents Link - new work from Edinburgh based contemporary jeweller Joanne Thompson. Joanne creates special everyday wearable pieces and extraordinary three dimensional necklaces and bracelets which are comfortable, elegant and easy to wear. Her distinctive silver and soft black palette is playful and sensual; elegant movement is integral to her jewellery. Ancient chain maille patterns are a constant inspiration. Joanne experiments with the scale, weight, form and texture of the chains, making sculptural forms, necklaces, bracelets and earrings which are voluminous yet light, tactile and extremely durable.

Working intuitively with her materials, Joanne’s designs are created through experimentation with ancient chainmaille patterns. Once patterns are selected Joanne plays with scale, form and numbers of units, creating sculptural jewellery that drapes with fluidity and movement. Following her unique and complex patterns, all of Joanne’s jewellery begins with fine guage silver wire, from which she hand-makes individual jump links, soldering and hammering each loop as the piece is created. The intricate unit construction technique is time consuming, however, the magic of watching a piece come to life during its creation is extremely rewarding. The final jewellery is satisfyingly tactile, full of movement and life, very durable and most of all, wearable.
