Welcome to Scottish Opera’s 2015-16 Season

I am delighted to be launching this Season alongside two wonderful musicians: Sir Thomas Allen, our Music Adviser, who has helped the Company shape the Season; and Stuart Stratford who has been appointed as our new Music Director. Stuart officially joins the Company on 1 June 2015, so you will not see his influence until future seasons, but he introduces himself below and I hope you will take the chance to come and hear him conduct. We bring you a characteristically ‘balanced basket’ of seven emotionally powerful operas, ranging in period across four centuries, and in style from the sultry, passionate audience favourite to the lusciously romantic, from a gem of early opera to a visceral world premiere, and some gentle comedy to complete the mix. We welcome back many fantastic artists who have worked with us in recent years, in roles that demand the highest musical and dramatic standards: creatives Harry Fehr, Martin Lloyd-Evans, Kally Lloyd-Jones, Stuart MacRae, Matthew Richardson, Yannis Thavoris and Louise Welsh; and singers Rebecca Bottone, Anne Sophie Duprels, Caitlin Hulcup, Leah-Marian Jones, Steven Page, Nicholas Sharratt, Richard Suart, Peter Wedd, Sir Willard White, and Roland Wood. New faces to look out for include Richard Egarr, Justina Gringyte, David Parry, Noah Stewart and Sarah Tynan. You can hear our three new Emerging Artist singers performing in several operas this season, alongside many returning recent alumni including Rosalind Coad, Sioned Gwen Davies, Nadine Livingston, Andrew McTaggart, and Lissa Lorenzo, who will direct our nationwide piano-accompanied tour. Our education team continues to lead the way in developing work for children and young people with a second tour of KidO and a world premiere specially commissioned for performance by our Connect Company of young singers and players. In December 2014, we completed the transformation of our home, Theatre Royal Glasgow, and opened the fabulous new foyers to the public. I’m hugely proud of the Company’s achievement in bringing this project to fruition and the fact that the foyers have already been shortlisted for two national awards: the Architects’ Journal UK Building of the Year and the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland Building of the Year. I urge you to see it for yourself and visit, explore and enjoy all that the theatre now offers.

In celebration of this new phase in the theatre’s life, I’m thrilled to announce that starting this Season our popular orchestral concert series, which has outgrown its

current venue St Andrew’s in the Square, will relocate to the Theatre Royal, making use of a specially built ‘acoustic shell’, with three concerts programmed for us by our new Music Director. We could not present such a busy and interesting Season without the loyalty of our audiences and the generosity of our supporters – for which I thank you all. I do hope you will find the time to join us for everything the Company has to offer this Season. Alex Reedijk, General Director

I am honoured and proud to have been appointed Music Director of Scottish Opera. My time here working recently on Janáček’s Jenůfa has shown me what a vibrant company Scottish Opera is and I look forward to working with the fantastic team to provide artistic and musical leadership in the coming years. In this new season, I am thrilled to be conducting Dvořák’s beautiful lyric fairy tale Rusalka for the first time. It sits at the heart of the Eastern-European repertoire I came to know so well when I studied at the St Petersburg State Conservatoire, and remains a personal favourite. I’m also excited by Stuart MacRae and Louise Welsh’s new opera, The Devil Inside. Conducting new music has been an important part of my career and I believe it is essential that opera finds new expression in the contemporary world.

Revival of the 1999 co-production with Welsh National Opera Sung in French with English supertitles Supported by Scottish Opera’s ‘Play a Supporting Role’ appeal

‘A memorable, visceral performance’ HHHH The Guardian

A hot-blooded tale of seduction and obsession, a host of colourful characters, and a fizzing score – this is Carmen as it should be. Director Benjamin Davis revives Patrice Caurier and Moshe Leiser’s much-loved 1999 production, evoking the heat and intensity of Seville, the perfect setting for one of the most famous love triangles in operatic history to unfold. When Don José, a young soldier, meets the sensual and high-spirited Carmen, thoughts of marrying his childhood sweetheart are driven from his mind. But Don José is not the only one to fall for Carmen’s charms, and when Carmen chooses another man, she sets in motion a shocking and unmissable showdown at the bullfighting arena. Carmen is one of the world’s favourite operas, and with good reason – Bizet’s stylish score perfectly captures the passion and suffering of his characters. From the sultry ‘Habanera’ to the rousing ‘Toreador’s Song’, his brilliant melodies pull the audience into the action as Carmen’s journey reaches its tragic conclusion. Justina Gringyte (winner of a 2015 International Opera Award) sings Carmen, rising star Noah Stewart is Don José, and baritone Roland Wood is Escamillo. David Parry conducts.

Building on the success of their beautifully-observed 2011 production of Orlando, director Harry Fehr and designer Yannis Thavoris return to offer a fresh perspective on the second of Handel’s Orlando furioso trilogy. Their gift for storytelling and trademark attention to detail bring to life a simple yet powerful fable of innocence maligned.

Production originates from Grange Park Opera Sung in Czech with English supertitles Supported by The Scottish Opera Syndicate

‘[A] strong, focused and imaginative production’ HHHHH

The Telegraph

Antony McDonald’s five-star production of Rusalka brings one of the most poignant fairy tales in opera to life. Full of quirky characters, and with more than a nod to Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, his enchanting production contrasts sweet, touching moments of beauty with the dark and menacing story at its core. Rusalka, a water nymph, longs to be human so she can earn the love of the Prince. The witch, Ježibaba, grants her wish but there are two conditions: Rusalka cannot use her voice, and she will be cursed for eternity if the Prince does not remain true to her. Just when it seems that Rusalka will get everything her heart desires, a foreign princess starts to turn the Prince’s head... Dvořák’s lusciously romantic score moves from beautifully lyrical moments of passion and heartbreak like the famous ‘Song to the Moon’, to charming passages of folk-inspired melodies. Anne Sophie Duprels (Madama Butterfly 2014) is Rusalka, bass-baritone Sir Willard White is her father, and tenor Peter Wedd (Inés de Castro and Jenůfa 2015) is the Prince. Stuart Stratford conducts his first Scottish Opera production as Music Director.

New co-production with D’Oyly Carte Opera Company Sung in English with English supertitles

‘What great entertainment’ The Herald on The Pirates of Penzance 2013

Following their 2013 hit with The Pirates of Penzance, director Martin Lloyd-Evans and choreographer Steve Elias return with one of the most popular Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas. With a storyline packed with anti-Establishment silliness, and self-serving politicians that are all too recognisable today, this playful show is full of family fun, performed to the highest standards. The Mikado has decreed that flirting should be punishable by death. But when his son Nanki-Poo falls for the beautiful Yum-Yum, it looks like someone might be heading for the executioner’s block. Unfortunately for Nanki-Poo, Ko-Ko the Lord High Executioner also has Yum-Yum in his sights. Can a case of mistaken identity save the day? Sullivan’s sunny and sparkling score is perfectly matched by Gilbert’s satirical lyrics, showing the pair at the height of their creative powers. From the famous ‘Three little maids’ and ‘Tit-willow’ to the witty ‘I’ve got a little list’, the show features some of G&S’s most recognisable tunes. We welcome back several of the team from The Pirates of Penzance, including Richard Suart, Nicholas Sharratt, Rebecca Bottone, former Scottish Opera Emerging Artist Sioned Gwen Davies and conductor Derek Clark. Baritone Stephen Richardson sings The Mikado, with comic genius Andrew Shore as Pooh-Bah.

But the daughter of a Captain can’t marry a lowly sailor, and her hand has been promised to Admiral Sir Joseph Porter. ‘MacRae’s opera, with no-holds-barred libretto by Louise Welsh, is immediately exciting January The Scotsman on Ghost Patrol

Glasgow | Edinburgh

Novelist Louise Welsh and composer Stuart MacRae are both wellknown in their respective fields. Their creative partnership, born of Five:15 Operas Made in Scotland and last seen in South Bank Sky Arts Award-winning Ghost Patrol (2012), here returns with a tale of greed and compulsion inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s short story The Bottle Imp.

Music Stuart MacRae Words Louise Welsh

A bottle with the power to grant your heart’s desires could be yours. Sounds appealing? There’s a catch. You can only sell it for less than you paid for it, and, if you die while owning it, your soul goes straight to hell. James uses the bottle to get all he ever dreamed of, and then sells it. Happily married to Catherine, he feels his life is complete...until an awful discovery begins to unravel their life together, with devastating consequences. The team behind Ghost Patrol – director Matthew Richardson and conductor Michael Rafferty – is joined by a strong ensemble cast including mezzosoprano Rachel Kelly, tenor Nicholas Sharratt (The Pirates of Penzance 2013 and Ghost Patrol 2012) and baritone Steven Page (The Rake’s Progress 2011 and The Pirates of Penzance 2013).

In opera, the path of true love rarely runs smooth, and no more so than in this light-hearted tale of love, lust and fidelity. Director Lissa Lorenzo and designer Robbie Sinnott transport audiences to 1950s Italy, in a stylish and romantic telling of one of Mozart’s best-loved operas.

Music Directors/Pianists Claire Haslin & Nicholas Fletcher Director Lissa Lorenzo Designer Robbie Sinnott Lighting Stephen Powles

When Don Alfonso wagers that he can prove all women are fickle, Ferrando and Guglielmo willingly accept, convinced that their fiancées could never be unfaithful. Pretending they have been sent to war, the men disguise themselves and each attempts to seduce the other’s wife-to-be. The women resist at first, but a bit of Don Alfonso’s trickery is enough to spark talk of a double wedding. Mozart’s music is at once light and witty, passionate and profound. Ensembles, including the famous ‘Soave sia il vento’ are balanced by tender and beautiful arias, creating a sublime score which perfectly reflects the bittersweet emotions of the characters. Touring to 19 of Scotland’s smaller venues, this piano-accompanied tour showcases some of the best young singers around.

Roll up, roll up! Scottish Opera’s Connect Company – young singers and players aged between 14 and 21 – invite you to join them at the carnival. But with danger looming on the horizon, we can’t guarantee a safe trip. Based on the 1920s German silent horror film Das Cabinet des Dr Caligari, our production transports the action to 1890s Glasgow, telling a dark and twisted story where both friends and minds may be lost. Dr Caligari is a charismatic carnival entertainer who uses a mysterious cabinet to lure in his unsuspecting audiences. Intrigued, friends Francis, Jane and Ellen watch the showman as he reveals the secret of the cabinet. Tragedy soon follows as the trio struggle to avoid their fate – murder, mayhem and descent into madness awaits. This darkly gothic, steampunk-inspired production takes a journey from Glasgow Green to Gartloch Asylum. This year primary pupils will hear the orchestra, singers and backstage crew introducing the plot, characters and music of Bizet’s Carmen and Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado. They will find out what an opera is, what makes it unique, and discover some secrets from behind the scenes. They will also see how the costumes, sets, props, lighting, singers and orchestra come together to create an opera live on stage.

Fever! takes pupils on an exciting journey, learning the benefits that biomedical science offers humanity, looking at the basic mechanics of the human body, and exploring the impact of press and media on today’s society. Spring 2016 18 Jan to 25 Mar Summer 2016 18 Apr to 24 Jun

Join in! Keen to get up on stage yourself? Take the next step by joining one of our groups for teenagers or adults.

Scottish Opera Connect For 14 to 21 year olds Scottish Opera Connect gives aspiring singers and orchestral musicians a unique, practical introduction to the skills and experience needed to perform opera. The programme offers the chance to develop knowledge, technique and creative skills under the expert tutelage of Scotland’s top opera professionals.

Connect Chorus Our Connect Chorus meets throughout the year for a programme of evening and weekend workshops, running from September to April. During the year the group works with a range of professionals involved in making opera in Scotland. Composers, conductors, voice coaches, stage directors, choreographers and designers come together to lead sessions on everything from singing and stagecraft to Alexander Technique and stage management.

Connect Orchestra Like Connect Chorus, our Connect Orchestra follows a programme of evening and weekend sessions running from September to April. Professional players from The Orchestra of Scottish Opera work with the group as mentors throughout the course, helping to develop the musicianship needed to play for opera.

Connect Stage Management Following the successful pilot in 2014, this season there will be opportunities for those aged 16 to 21 to join the stage management team, providing technical and stage support for the Connect Company’s concerts and productions throughout the season. Auditions for Connect 2016/17 will be held in January 2016. Look out for information this Autumn at scottishopera.org.uk

The Pop-up Opera Roadshow Building on the success of the A Little Bit of... storytelling format, Scottish Opera is packing up its theatre on wheels and taking three pop-up operas out on the road to festivals across Scotland this Summer. Performed by a storyteller, singers and instrumentalists, and supported by a set of colourful illustrations, each show gives a fantastic introduction to opera. A Little Bit of Carmen and A Little Bit of Barber are cleverly re-written 20 minute versions of the full operas and are suitable for all ages, while Puffy MacPuffer & The Crabbit Canals tells the story of the five Scottish canals and has been specifically created for 5 to 8 year olds. All the action takes place in our specially converted scenery trailer, which has been beautifully painted to replicate the auditorium of the Theatre Royal Glasgow complete with curtains, chandeliers and a wee stage!

The Pop-up Opera Roadshow will visit Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival, Perth Festival of the Arts, Riverside Museum, 3 Harbours Festival, Eden Festival and Borders Book Festival from 21 May to 14 June 2015. See scottishopera.org.uk for more details.

Opera: music, costumes, set. We want you to experience it all. And with our Audio-described performances, visually-impaired patrons can. Mention opera and most people think of singing and music, but this is only part of the overall experience. What about scenery, costumes, lighting, direction and choreography? Audio Description helps visuallyimpaired patrons enjoy the opera experience with live commentary designed to describe the action on stage without compromising the music. As part of the experience, we include: • • •

A free CD, sent out in advance of the performance, which gives an excellent introduction to the production, including interviews, a synopsis, musical excerpts and details about the costumes, sets and individual characters. A free Touch Tour of the set, costumes and props before the show. An audio introduction 15 minutes before the start of the main performance.

If you or someone you know is interested in booking for an Audiodescribed performance, please make this clear when you contact the Box Office at your chosen theatre. Discounted tickets are available. Tickets for Audio-described performances and Touch Tours must be booked at least two weeks in advance. Guide dogs are welcome.
