A POOL OF OPPORTUNITIES Welcome to Scottish Swimming’s Conference 2014 FRIDAY 12 - SATURDAY 13 SEPTEMBER TOLLCROSS INTERNATIONAL SWIMMING CENTRE, GLASGOW
An introduction from Forbes Dunlop Welcome to Scottish Swimming’s Conference programme for 2014. I am delighted that we will be returning to Tollcross International Swimming Centre, the venue for what we hope will be a fantastic week of success for Scottish athletes at the Commonwealth Games. While performance may take centre stage this summer, Scottish Swimming is also working hard to ensure we can develop lasting aquatic legacies across Scotland for years to come, and for this we need the support and engagement of our partners across all 32 local authorities to help us to ensure every child can swim as well as delivering quality aquatic programmes which will inspire people to remain within our sport, as well as creating the next generation of elite athletes. Our Conference is now well established within our sporting calendar and in 2014 we have attracted a number of excellent keynote speakers including Horst Miehe (former President of the New Zealand Coach & Teachers Association and current FINA Educator); Shannon Rollason (Head Coach at Denmark’s National Training Centre) and Tony Stanger (ex-British Lion Rugby Union player and now Talent Manager with sportscotland Institute of Sport). Running over two days the Conference offers workshops and presentations which will appeal across the swimming spectrum, from a novice swimming teacher to an aspiring top level performance coach, from a dedicated club volunteer to a swimming development manager.
And if that isn’t enough the Conference will also act as a pre-cursor to the 15th Scottish Swimming Awards Event, which this year will be held on Saturday 13th September at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. The 2014 Awards Dinner will showcase the entire aquatic community from those who have attained greatness in their discipline to coaches and volunteers, all of whom regularly contribute to the ongoing success of our sport in Scotland. The ‘Black Tie’ evening will commence with a drinks reception at 6.45pm, with the awards ceremony and dinner at 7.30pm, and will be once again hosted by broadcaster and former British swimmer, Steve Parry. So extend your weekend, and be part of what will undoubtedly be, a night to remember. I look forward to welcoming you all to Glasgow in September.
