the ever expanding chicago suburb is now pushing the traditional business commuter time into the one/two hour range. Major national and international companies are now building facilities in the suburban ring of communities along major interstates. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is exploring development potential of new office, commercial and residential construction in the air rights over major rural and suburban routes adjacent to and in chicago. IDOTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interest focuses on the design feasibility of a prototypical project incorporating contemporary structural, environmental, constructional and sustainable technologies that could be used in other illinois cities and municipalities. The project targets a typical six-lane roadway adjacent to on/ off ramps and growing communities. The end goal is to create new empoloyment opportunities and sustainable communities.

design brief_ Located on the edge of the Fox River in Elgin, the Multifaith School is designed to create unique learning environments for children of all faiths. The schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strong connection to the natural environment and its complete energy independence sets an example of what all religions have in common, which is stewardship to the planet we all share.

program 01 lobby + pre k The building’s entrance is located in the first of three buildings, just off of the 100 year flood plain. It houses four pre kindergarten classrooms and teacher’s offices above. The building mass is uniquely located with a large cantilever over the river to bring the children as close as possible to memorable and educating environments.

02 middleschool + elementary The east wing of the second building houses two levels of classrooms with the elementary rooms on the first floor. Located above are six middleschool classrooms with access down to the school’s garden.

cafeteria + library The cafeteria produce is supplied by the school’s four main agricultural fields. The kitchen is located at the lowest level with seating above. The library contains the school’s computer lab and offers reading areas with views back onto the Fox River.

03 open air gymnasium The school’s gymnasium is a proposed addition to the two main buildings. With operable wall panels, the gymnasium can be manipulated into a covered, open-air court where recess’ and events could be held outdoors in warmer months. The gymnasium is a much needed community space for the city of Elgin and could potentially host city events.

living building challenge is a philosophy, advocacy tool and certification program that addresses development at all scales. It is comprised of seven performance areas: Site, Water, Energy, Health, Materials, Equity and Beauty. The purpose of the Living Building Challenge is straightforward â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it defines the most advanced measure of sustainability in the built environment possible today and acts to diminish the gap between current limits and ideal solutions. Whether a project is a single building, a park, a college campus or even a complete neighborhood community, Living Building Challenge provides a framework for design, construction and the symbiotic relationship between people and all aspects of the built environment.

developing the site Agricultural Fields_ Living Building Challenge specifies that 35% of the site needs to be devoted to agriculture, meaning the building is required to produce its own food. Because Illinois can be very inhospitable in its weather, seasonal produce and plants of all varieties would need to be grown, and potentially moved indoors or covered in the winter.

Photovoltaic Panels + Solar power_ The majority of solar panels would be placed near the back of the site in open fields because of the large square footage required to turn over enough energy. However, the main elementary/middlschool building is designed specifically in section to house a number of panels hidden from view.

Wind Energy_ Wind energy is harnassed when a wind turbine or machine converts kinetic energy into mechanical energy. This energy is then put back into the building to be continually renewing. The benefits of wind energy are numerous. Unlike solar energy, which can only be harvested during the daytime hours (which are very short in the winter) wind is an abundant renewable resource that is available at all hours of the day, every day of the week.

Geothermal + Rain/Water Collection_ The consistency of the earthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s core temperature is yet another way we have established a responsible and sustainable approach to living. By excavating and laying piping into the earth, the school is able to run water through the pipes to release and renew extreme temperatures.

design brief_ A proposal for the unfinished site of the infamous Chicago Spire, 400 North Lake Shore Drive is prime realestate directly adjacent to Dusable Park and Navy Pier. The buildings program is split into three parts: retail, hotel, and condominium. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s location, at the termination of the Chicago Riverwalk, brings a unique opportunity for life to return to a rather underused area of Chicago. The buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s intense seven degree lean out over Lake Shore Drive offers a formidable iconic image for Chicago on the same scale as the sites predecessor.

The Chicago Riverwalk has continually been a subject of conversation with ideas proposed by SOM for revitalization. The fact is that nine months of the year the riverwalk remains idle and desolate. The site at 400 North Lake Shore Drive is a proposal to encourage shoppers and recreationalists to take advantage of the amenities offered to them along the river. The retail at its lowest level would house a bicycle rental shop for visitors and sightseers to tour the city and local area.

With a seven degree lean out over Lake Shore Drive, the building has been carefully calculated and reinforced by a multiplicity of structural systems working together. Beginning with a precambered core, the buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main vertical shaft is substantially biased in the opposite direction of the lean. The structural diagrid skin system works along with a rigid steel load bearing member that meets the ground at a massive pin connection, resulting in the buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to sway if needed.

retail level Constituting the first five floors of the building, the retail level aims to bring shoppers and tourists to the waters edge and engage with Dusable Park. The atrium cut into the buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s south facade allows light to filter deep into the retail space. The floors shift and change opening dimensions in order to allow for maximum light penetration.

design brief_ In its present condition, the empty lot behind West Dundeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Main street is home only to poorly planned parking stalls and potholes. The cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s architecture stands unchanged from the early twentieth century, giving the city a sense of integrity and safety. The main features of the program include a lecture hall, research institute, gallery space, and cafe. The proposal for Dundeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 30,000 ft2 library is an unique oportunity to create a community center for Dundee residents that is within walking distance from the downtown core and nearby homes. The buildings multifunctional spaces and outdoor environments would potentially bring life and community to an area that previously had none.

The site of the proposed Dundee Library is the transitional space between commercial and residential. The short distances between locations allows nearby residents quick access without the need for vehicular travel. The proposal for the Dundee Library means to capitolize on pedestrian travel. The building acts as the link between the residences and the great ammenities the downtown has to offer.

section perspective Hidden under a long-span extensive green roof, the 600 person lecture hall offers the city of Dundee the luxury of having guest speakers and ceremonies right at home. The buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cafe space has both indoor and outdoor seating with quick access between both. At the eastern end of the site, the building offers commercial space with adaptable open areas for more refined fields of work.

section perspective The buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main feature is the triple heighted atrium that acts as a means for natural ventilation with operable vents near the top. During the day the heat gathered in the space is slowly and evenly disperesed throughout the building, saving on heating costs during fall and spring months. The lower entry is accented by a large water feature near the buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s open stair core.
