Name the committee and I’m likely on it, haha. Truly, I am currently on the Membership, Gala, Awards, Trade Show, Communications , NextGen, DEI, Directory, and Apartment Tour. Also, I am currently in the Leadership Lyceum Program.
What brought you to the apartment industry?
A good friend of mine back in Memphis thought I would be great at leasing. Turns out she was right! I went from Leasing Consultant alongside her guidance there in Memphis, moved here to Nashville to continue down that path, to Assistant Manager, then on to Property Manager, and now on to the supplier side of the multifamily world.
Was this the career path something that was always on your radar?
No, never even crossed my mind. Hindsight though, I really wish I had found it sooner in life. It’s been fun, entertaining, educational, challenging, and quite rewarding!
Did you have any unrelated jobs growing up that unexpectedly prepared you for the apartment industry? Every job I had growing up and into adulthood was in one way, shape, or form customer service related, even my very first job at 15 years old answering phones over my summer vacation for the company my mother worked for. It’s just something I was naturally good at and always have truthfully really enjoyed. At the heart of what we all do in this industry is 100% customer service related. Consider me well-vetted in the field!
Why is property maintenance an attractive career path?
Learning a trade just isn’t something people do anymore, unfortunately. However, because of that, the ability to grow and do well in this field are wide open with endless opportunities!
Best professional advice you have ever been given?
Take all the good, the bad, and the ugly and learn from it! Never stop listening and learning or else you’ll stop growing both personally and professionally. Also – and this very simple one I carry with me every day and always will – did you realize
First Nashville/Rasa Flooring
you can hear a “smile” through the phone? Think about it. So remember to smile when you’re talking to someone, even if they can’t see you. Trust me, they’ll know!
What is your favorite thing to do on the weekends?
Spending time with the family and traveling when possible. Otherwise, I’m usually getting my hands dirty in the garden. (Speaking of that, I’m sure a zucchini has popped up overnight that I probably need to pick. You fellow gardeners know what I’m talking about!)
Do you have any pets?
Of course! We have three dogs + one foster pup at the moment, and what farm wouldn’t be complete without a few chickens too!
Coolest place you’ve ever traveled?
I think my favorite place would be Jamaica. You just can’t not be happy when you’re there. #onelove
Give us a fun fact about you.
I literally was “Miss Congeniality” back in high school. No lie –my mother probably still has the sash to prove it.
What upcoming GNAA event are you excited to attend and why?
So many I can’t choose just one! The Trade Show is always amazing, Women’s Conference is so motivational, the Legal Conference ( I still attend every year even though I’m not on site anymore because I’m a nerd like that), and of course, the Gala. So many awesome things still to come in 2023!
Do you have a motto you live by?
Be kind. It’s a simple thing, really. Treat others how you’d like to be treated. Show respect and be kind. Have you met karma lately?
Any advice you could give to the rising stars of GNAA?
Get involved! There are so many outlets to choose from! You can invest as little or as much time as you can spare. Committees are a great place to start, especially since the one decent thing that came out of the pandemic is being able to do things remotely, so now most all meetings you can even join via Zoom – how convenient! Also, getting more involved likely leads to building new relationships. I know I’ve developed friendships that will last a lifetime due to this industry and I am so very grateful for that!
