Welcome to the 2019 heating season, a New Year with many opportunities, changes and surprises ahead for all of us. Each year we look back with great pride at the many accomplishments, successes and wonderful work that happens within our walls every day. We are fortunate enough to have a compassionate, committed and hard-working team of professionals at SmartBurn and we thank them for consistently living our values and delivering on our vision of ‘best’. We strongly value the integrity behind our promises and are committed to delivering you technical expertise and customer service that exceeds expectations. I’ve noticed that in both life and in my work, every passing year develops its own theme. My 2018 theme was that of resilience, where my passion for water skiing continued to bring me lessons about life. After a great summer season, I took a fall in late May that resulted in a lot of metal work holding my wrist together (a plate, pins and numerous screws in fact) but the real payoff from the struggle has been newfound resilience, strength and to take time to slow down and appreciate life. Our newsletter this year covers a number of areas we are working and focused on. I hope you enjoy the read and it provides valuable information, not just about SmartBurn, but also about some aspects of this great industry we work in. As we count our blessings, we send each of you our best wishes for a bright, happy and wonderful year filled with peace and good health. The New Standards Does your wood heater conform to Australian Standards? Did you know that all new wood heaters in Australia have to conform to standards for emissions and efficiency? Taking effect August 2019 the Australian wood heating industry has voluntarily adopted new standards that will ensure heaters have an efficiency of at least 60% and particle emissions not greater than 1.5g/kg. Certified heaters under this new standard generate less smoke (fewer particles) and use less wood to create more heat. Minimising wood smoke pollution contributes to significant benefits for everyone by improving our air quality, reducing the maintenance and running costs of your wood heater, and saving you money.
If you think it’s time to upgrade your heater (if it's 15-20 years old) than you will be pleasantly surprised with the new technology available. New wood heaters burn less wood and are more efficient and ensure more smoke is burned within the firebox before exiting the stove. If you are looking at purchasing a wood heater, be sure to check if the unit has an Australian Certificate of Compliance. You can check if the unit you are looking at is compliant by visiting www.certifiedwoodheaters.com.au
All wood heaters sold in Australia should have a compliance plate stating it conforms to the Australian Standard for emissions (AS/NZS 4013:2014) and efficiency (AS/NZS 4012:2014). Do I need to upgrade my wood heater? No. Wood heaters already sold on the Australian market need to meet some of the world's strictest requirements making wood heating not only a great way to heat your home and save money, but an environmentally friendly option using a sustainable source of energy. 2018 News in brief SPRING 2018
Independent Hardware Group Expo Glenn and Lisa Horton (Marketing Manager) attended the Independent Hardware Group Expo where Mitre 10 and Home Timber and Hardware businesses came together for their annual industry expo. 600 members and 2000 suppliers gathered at the Adelaide Convention Centre to attend business sessions, arrange orders, learn and network.
Hearth, Patio, Barbeque Expo Nashville, USA The Hearth Patio & Barbecue Expo was a 3 day event held from 8th to 10th March at the Music City Centre in Nashville, USA. This event showcased the latest home heating solutions, grilling accessories, outdoor kitchens and furniture.
Biomass Innovation Expo - Milan, Italy Biomass is a renewable energy resource derived from the by-products of the timber industry, agricultural crops, raw materials from forests and household waste. Biomass is an important source of energy and the most important fuel worldwide after coal, oil and natural gas. Glenn attended the Biomass Innovation Expo to keep in touch with global trends and hear more about how biomass is becoming the key energy resource for global sustainable development.

Why do wood heaters smoke? SPRING 2018
When wood is heated to a high enough temperature it breaks into a complex mixture of gases. These gases burn in the presence of oxygen to give off heat. If there is not enough heat, the gases will only partially burn and the un-burned gases will go up the chimney flue into the air outside. Once outside, these gases cool down and condense into tiny droplets of oils and tars known as particles. A single particle is far too small to see with the naked eye, but a lot of particles together are seen as wood smoke. Particles cause many of the environmental and health problems associated with wood smoke.

Can you have a fire without smoke? Wood is a complex fuel. It goes through three main phases when it burns. The first phase is drying, when any moisture left in the wood is evaporated. This absorbs energy. Once dry, the increasing temperature causes the wood to undergo chemical change and gas is released from the wood. This is the time when the highest concentration of smoke is produced. If there is a vigorous flame in the wood heater then this stage of combustion is shortened and most of the smoke is burnt up before it gets to the flue. The second phase of combustion is the main flame burning stage. Burning kindling, or other burning wood, ignites the gases coming off the new wood. The gases burn to give the bright flame we see when wood is burning. The fastest release of gas occurs during the first 20 minutes or so after refuelling a hot heater. It is essential to have plenty of air

to mix with the gas to make sure it burns. This is why it is so important to keep the air control fully open for the first 15 - 20 minutes after reloading. Once the wood is well alight, with some burning embers on the wood surface, the chances of the flame disappearing are slight, even when the air is reduced. The main flame combustion phase, which lasts for one to two hours in a typical heater, releases about half the energy in the wood. The third phase of wood burning is the charcoal stage. Once most of the gas has been released from the wood, a residue of almost pure carbon remains. This burns with very little release of smoke. Don’t let your fire go up in smoke As winter draws in, we encourage wood heater owners to take responsibility of their wood heaters to minimise smoke pollution in the neighbourhood and save money on running costs. It is important to remember that smoke is actually wasted fuel that could otherwise have been converted to heat if the wood had burned more efficiently. Individually, wood heater owners can do a huge amount to reduce the pollution they emit and save money too.
You can minimise the amount of smoke from a wood heater if you; •
Burn only dry, seasoned, untreated wood

Do not overfill the heater
•
Keep the air controls fully open for the first 20 minutes of operation and after adding new wood
•
Establish a good fire quickly with plenty of kindling
•
Use smaller logs to get the fire established and larger logs for slower burning
•

How does a chimney work? Did you know flue design has a great impact on the flue's efficiency? Chimneys have two main functions. First they create a draft that draws out the gas by-products of wood. Second they release those by-products outside the home. Think of the chimney as the engine that drives the heater. The more fuel (heat) you give the engine (chimney flue), the more power (draft) it will deliver. And draft is good! When you build a fire in a heater where the chimney flue is installed correctly, the kindling ignites easily, draft increases rapidly and you should have a nice bright, hot fire quickly. A straight flue is advantageous as it does not impede the inflow of oxygen or the outflow of by-products and is easier to clean and maintain. Should the realities of your homes architecture require building a bend in your flue, then it is imperative that the angles of the bends and their positioning be installed following the Australian standards. What effects draft? The hotter that the gases are inside your chimney compared to the outside temperature, the stronger the draft will be. The height of your chimney can also effect draft. Chimney length and draft are related - a taller chimney will create a stronger draft. No wood heater, stove or fireplace can function properly without a good chimney or flue. A good chimney is;

The correct size, design and height - very critical requirements!
•
The correct type for the appliance. There are many options available and a lot are unsuitable
•
Properly located - preferably up through the heated space of your home
•
Properly installed - All wood heaters need to be installed in accordance with the Australian Standard AS/NZS 2918 and must comply with the manufacturer’s instructions and the Building
Code of Australia. It also helps to check with your local Council to see if there are any building regulations or covenants or restrictions in your area. Failure to install the heater correctly could result in issues with Insurance, should you run into problems. And yes - you must notify your Insurance Company when you have installed a wood heater in your home!

How does a healthy chimney perform? When you have a chimney or flue system that works optimally you will find; •
The fire lights easily and draft builds quickly
•
Smoke does not fill the room when you try and light the fire
•
No foul odours are noticeable when the fire is not in use
•
No smoke spillage occurs back into your room when you open the fire door to load more wood
On the other hand, if the chimney flue is not working properly then sufficient draft will not be generated inside the flue and subsequently not enough air will be sucked into the fire for it to burn properly. This will cause the fire to be sluggish and smoky causing an abundance of creosote to form in the flue.
Chimney Flue Maintenance and Purchasing The Australian Home Heating Association (AHHA) encourages those who have a wood heater installed in their home to undertake maintenance of their wood heater in the summer months and have their flue cleaned ready for next season. When planning to buy a new wood heater and flue system, the first thing you need is reliable advice. It is important to purchase your wood heater and flue from an expert who is dedicated to ensuring you purchase the correct heater and flue for your family and homes requirements. As an industry body, the AHHA communicates with government to ensure homeowners are afforded the option to have a wood heater in their home. By ensuring you use it correctly and are mindful of the environment, you can be comfortable in having a warm home without compromising your neighbour or affecting the environment. Chainsaw massacre The cost of illegal firewood Did you know it is illegal to take wood from public land without a permit? This includes cutting down living or standing dead trees or collecting wood, such as branches from the ground.
Vandals cut down six large trees at the Pinnacle Reserve picnic area on Mount Canobolas in NSW in July 2018. One of the trees was almost 80 years old and the habitat for parrots, possums and gliders.
A recent report has highlighted the serious extent of illegal firewood harvesting on Tasmania’s east coast at key sites, often in threatened habitats critical for the survival of some of Tasmania’s most endangered species.
It is important to remember that our native animals are directly threatened by the removal of mature and dead standing trees as they rely on tree hollows for shelter and breeding. Fallen timber from the forest floor is also vitally important for mammals and reptiles and is extremely important for mosses, fungi and micro-organisms which play a role in returning nutrients to the soil.
Results from a recent study carried out at a 13 hectare site near Buckland estimated that 480 tonnes of firewood has recently been harvested! The commercial value of this timber has been calculated at $72,000, which is home to the swift parrot, eastern quoll and Tasmanian devil. While the study has shown that there has been significant harvesting activity in the area over the last few years, this is just one of many locations Australia-wide that is being impacted by illegal harvesting.
What can you do? •

Purchase wood from an accredited Firewood Association of Australia seller that source their wood legitimately from forestry operations or other sustainably managed plantations If you are collecting your own wood- ensure that the required permits or approvals are obtained. Do not collect mature trees that contain hollows, standing dead trees or logs that are covered in more than 50% moss or fungi Report suspicious behaviour and activity to your local council and the Police

Unproductive land offers an opportunity
As a long term supporter of Landcare Australia, the Australian Home Heating Association (AHHA) represents manufacturers who are committed to manufacturing wood heaters that are as environmentally responsible as possible. The Australian Home Heating Association has been a major supporter of Landcare projects for the past 22 years because they recognise how important plantations are, not only as a sustainable heat source for Australians but for their many other environmental, social and economic benefits. Unproductive sand dunes in the Coorong, Murraylands and Riverland are slowly being transformed into sustainable timber forests through the help of donations to the project by the AHHA. The transformation is part of Landcare Australia’s Agroforestry Development Series Demonstration Sites project which aims to develop and share knowledge of silviculture within the farming industry and increase sustainability. Over 11,000 Eucalyptus seedlings have been propagated and established at 23 demonstration sites of mixed farm forestry trees. At SmartBurn we proudly support the activities of the AHHA and their funding of Agroforestry Projects through Landcare. We look forward to seeing this project progress and recommend that all consumers use firewood sourced from sustainably managed plantations.

Pasta Soup Recipe INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • **A Jaime Oliver Recipe**
SERVES 4
1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 stick of celery, trimmed and finely chopped 1 clove of garlic, peeled and finely chopped Extra virgin olive oil 2 x 400gm tins of chickpeas 500ml of vegetable or chicken stock 100gms small Italian soup pasta (small shells) Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper A sprig of rosemary, leaves finely chopped Optional - A small handful of parsley, leaves picked and torn - Grated parmesan
DIRECTIONS 1) Put the finely chopped garlic, onion and celery into a saucepan with a little virgin olive oil and the rosemary and cook as gently as possible, with the lid on, for about 20 minutes until all the vegetables are soft and without colour. 2) Drain the chickpeas well and rinse under cold water, then add them to the pan
and cover with the stock. Cook gently for 30 minutes, then with a slotted spoon, remove half the chickpeas and put them to one side in a bowl. 3) Puree the soup in the pan using a handheld stick blender. Add the reserved whole chickpeas and the pasta, season the soup with salt and pepper and
simmer gently until the chickpeas are tender and the pasta is cooked. 4) At this point, if the soup is a little thick, pour in some boiling water to thin it down and add some more salt and pepper if needed. Serve with some freshly torn basil and grated parmesan. Enjoy!
