More Heat & Less Smoke From Your Wood Fire

The Magic behind the Fire “A room is always better when there is a fire going in it.” What is it within our DNA as humans that transfixes and draws us all to the warmth and comfort of a mesmerizing fire? We can easily get lost as we peer into its jumping peaks and letting its heat fill our hearts and homes. Fire is so much more than some mystical chemistry. It serves as a social gathering point, activates nearly all of our senses, whilst also being good for your mental and emotional wellbeing. Mindfulness is simply defined as living in the moment, not caught up in the events of the past or conversations caught up in our head. It’s a concept that sounds relatively easy on paper but in practice can be much harder. One of the best ways to train the mind is through mindfulness meditation. Digital apps such as Headspace, Calm and Smiling Mind can be of great assistance, and other times actions where you only focus on just one thing can be helpful. This could be going on a

brisk walk or having a cup of tea and staring into that beautiful fire, or nature’s television as we call it. But there is science behind this open-eyed meditation. As we gaze into the flames of a fire, our brain’s activity level slows into a state known as Alpha waves. These are the kind of waves experienced just before falling asleep, and is the reason looking into the spectrum of colour that appears in a fire evokes such peacefulness and relaxation within us. We also become more open to new ideas and it is said that one can be highly creative during this state. So, we hope you sit back and relax in front of your fire as you enjoy the rest of this newsletter. Maybe even try the word sleuth.

The Past Year

AHHA Industry Conference It is important for us to contribute to the industry in which we participate. The Australian Home Heating Association, underwent a restructure this year, to better promote the interests of quality standards and responsible operation of wood heaters. Pictured with Glenn is Bruce Mogg at this year’s annual conference. Through various industry roles, including AHHA Board member, Bruce is a significant contributor to the sustainability of the wood heating industry, of which we all enjoy.

Education is the Best Investment When did you last attend a training course, or invest in your personal growth? We all know that time in education is the most beneficial activity that we can individually undertake, and as a business make in our people. Glenn attended a Management course in the USA late last year, whilst also participating in financial and digital marketing short courses. What might you be able to undertake this year, either large or small, to challenge yourself? "To attract what you want in your life takes considerable effort, dedication, belief, action and practice." - John Assaraf

USA Direct TV – As Seen on TV TV still works for us! In this modern era of on demand digital content, we understand that our customers in regional areas, especially whilst inside during winter, still enjoy traditional television. Look for our “Tonight’s Weather is brought to you by SmartBurn” during your nightly TV News. We have also enjoyed sales success in the USA recently with new territories learning about SmartBurn through infomercial style television. We are delighted to be able to bring the benefits of SmartBurn and make this environmental contribution in the USA.

We rely on our stores to effectively display and promote the benefits of our product, and in store training is the best way to offer support. Friendships formed with small business owners and store manages alike, as well as the thousands of retail staff and familiar faces are greatly appreciated. Look out for the SmartBurn display box on the counter of your local store.

Industry Technical Articles

Measuring Air Quality Many Local Government Councils and the Australian EPA continuously record environmental air quality typically with a DustTrak measuring device. These machines record particle aerodynamic diameter, both as a PM2.5 and PM10 measurement, as well as total suspended particulate matter (TSP). This is a measure of the concentration of 2.5 micron and 10 micron sized particles in the air. PM2.5 particles can enter the lungs and bloodstream and are therefore of most concern for human health. Of course fine airborne particles come from a range of sources including mining, diesel fuel emissions, road dust, bush fires, agricultural wind erosion, and also wood heater smoke.

What's With the Firebrick? Placing SmartBurn on a small firebrick provides a stable level base and distances it from being disturbed by moving logs. Principally this elevates the tube out of the ash bed, allowing the active vapours to be released from the ends of the tube without being buried in ash. Small Firebricks that are just the right size to support your SmartBurn are available directly from SmartBurn, or as a spare part from reseller stores of new wood heaters. We don’t recommend to use a house or paving brick within your wood heater, since they are not kilned to as high a temperature to remove moisture creating an explosion risk.

Manufacturing Locally SmartBurn is produced right here in Perth, Western Australia. We proudly source all supplies from local businesses – many family operated – supporting local skills and employment. From steel supply, engineering, graphic design, packaging and printing, through to transport. Quality control, and on time supply are key advantages.

Glass Cleaning Tip

Don’t be Tempted to Skip a Year With Your Flue Cleaning

The idea of us ing wet new spaper and ash to cl ean the glas s door of your heat er generally works, however a S martBurn will continually do this for you without the el bow grease!

A flue is not maintenance free, however, clean chimney flues don’t catch fire! Approximately 1,000 Aussie homes experience a flue fire every year. SmartBurn can aid in making sure your place isn’t one of them.

SmartBurn is safe, easy to use and non-toxic. Its unique design means it lasts longer than chemical cleaners and will also reduce your smoke emissions, extend your overnight burn as well as assist in cleaning your glass.

SmartBurn is Certified as Non-Corrosive Within their NATA certified laboratory, SGS Certification Services have performed extensive tests to confirm that the SmartBurn device is noncorrosive and not detrimental to any of the metals within your firebox or flue, including wetbacks. The test report is downloadable from our SmartBurn website. SmartBurn is safe, natural non-toxic and not a chemical or salt based cleaner. Obviously, high moisture wood can be a significant contributor to corrosion, so again we repeat, use only dry wood.

Design and Updating Your Heater

Fireplaces Dominate Living Spaces Did you know that not all rooms within our homes are created equal when it comes to creating those spaces where unforgettable memories and enlightening conversations take place. Whilst in the USA recently, Glenn attended a presentation about a study performed in Wisconsin. It was revealed that survey participants said the most important rooms of the house were firstly, the living or family room, then kitchen, which beat places such as the bedroom and back yard by a long shot. Their findings suggest rooms with features such as fireplaces and high ceilings evoke positive emotions that increase feelings of welcoming, relaxation and coziness. When asked to evaluate their current homes participants indicated that rooms with fireplaces were much more likely to be associated with the uplifting emotions people crave.

Thinking About Renovating? Fireplaces and wood heaters are typically the dominant element in rooms lucky enough to have them, and the anchor around which furnishings are organized. In fact, most fireplaces refuse to be ignored, whether they’re beautiful or ugly.

8

And therein lies the problem: What if your fireplace is clad in dated tile or discoloured brick, or your mantel looks out of proportion or out of place? (McKeough, 2019). If you like your fireplace, chances are you’ll like your whole room a lot better. So why not renovate? Built-in fireplaces can have the mantle or brick façade painted, and the mantle can also be changed or swapped out altogether, significantly changing the look of your room.

Not Broken, but Very Inefficient

Reminder

Turn your fir

ebox fan off Your wood heater is 20+ when burnin g overnight years old, but it still works as this cools the firebox increasing sm right? Consider changing your oke emissions. wood heater for a new efficient model. Be amazed by how much more heat output is achieved, whilst using less wood. Modern wood heaters have significantly increased efficiency ensuring less smoke production at all stages of burning, benefiting your neighbourhood. Yes, you may not get quite as long an overnight burn, but using a SmartBurn can help with that!

More Heat & Less Smoke From Your Wood Fire

Choosing a New Model A quick search will find many modern designs that will compliment different styles of home architecture too; it doesn’t have to be a boring black square box. Since August 2019 all new wood heaters available for sale within Australia meet a new minimum standard of 60% efficiency and have particle emissions not greater than 1.5g/kg, with many performing far better than these minimums. Be sure to investigate www.certifiedwoodheaters.com.au to check the performance and certification of your new dream model. Your flue kit also needs to meet Australian Standards, further ensuring your safety. Buy the right size; A heater that is too large for an area will have to be turned down too often and too small a heater can result in over-firing, shortening the life of the heater.

Fun Fact Completed in March 2019 and standing 18 storeys high ‘Mjostarnet’ housing The Wood Hotel in Norway is the tallest timber building in the world. Buildings made with crosslaminated timber use less than half the carbon emissions of structures using steel and concrete. “If we are going to deal with climate change, it’s all about moving away from carbon intensive building materials.” (Ackerley, 2019).

Concerned about climate change? Heat your home with wood. The USA EPA, among other global organisations, have determined firewood is a Carbon Neutral greenhouse gas emitter.

Buying and Storing Wood HOT Tip

When purchasing firewood, look for the Firewood Association of Australia logo from your firewood supplier. The FAA developed and manages a system of self-regulation that prevents sales of unseasoned wood. FAA Members source wood from sustainable forests, ensure wood is the correct weight and responsibly dry prior to sale. Handheld moisture meters are an easy and quick way to ensure at the moisture content of your firewood is less than 20%.

Lighting Tips It isn’t necessary to use newspaper when lighting your fire. Start with good quality natural firelighters, followed by small kindling, softwood if available, then small wood pieces and finally the larger logs. Load the wood with the ends front to back in the firebox, this allows better airflow within the firebox. Remember to always keep your air flow slider on maximum air for 20 mins after lighting, and always after reloading new wood to your fire.

Wood stacking - A Chore or an Art Form? There is no question that wood needs to be well cured and dried in order to perform the best in your wood heater. Storing logs in an unorganised pile will impede air flow and cause the wood to rot rather than continue to dry and season even more. Hardwood as cut blocks should be cured for at least 12 months prior to burning.

Easy Steps to Dry Wood •

Split wood dries much faster, since free moisture escapes more quickly from the ends not the sides.

Cut your wood into a range of sizes to suit your wood heater, including small pieces for kindling.

Stack off the ground and away from buildings to allow air to circulate.

Stack wood in a single row with the split side facing down.

Properly dried wood is lighter and will sound hollow when pieces are knocked against another.

Depending on climatic conditions (temperature and relative humidity) wood moisture content comes to equilibrium with the surrounding environment at around 15%.

Got a creative way of stacking your wood at home? We’d love to know, so send your photos into orders@smartburn. com.au for a chance to feature on our Facebook page.

Testimonials Hands Down the best product

I had been looking forward to finally giving SmartBurn a try and with all the hype it had a lot to live up to but I am absolutely stoked to say that it definitely works. Within a couple of weeks it had done everything as promised, cleaned the flu, cleaned the glass etc. I could even notice more heat output and less wood actually going on to the fire. If you own a wood fire you NEED this product.

Ron - West Coast, TAS

Why you need this

If you're not using SmartBurn you are missing out. Clean glass, clean chimney, less ash & less wood burnt. I have been using SmartBurn since they first hit the market and use them every winter. What they guarantee is what you get & that is all the above. When you go outside and you're not sure if they work or not just look up at your chimney & see how clean it is, & that's not mentioning the absence of great plumes of smoke. Try it, even if it's only once.

Warren - Muckatah, VIC

Keeps the chimney clean

Great product, we love it!

Been using this product for years now, and wouldn't be without it. It cleans the glass even after I've made it go black from wood touching it. Love the chimney thermometer also, helps to keep the fire burning at the optimum level. Paulette - Inverell, NSW

SmartBurn lives up to its blurb

12

I will continue buying this product, having done so for many years. It does what it is said to do. The glass and flue stay very clean. No complicated instructions or installation procedure.

Carol - Molesworth, TAS

Very happy with it. Noticed how clean the chimney hat was after last winter.

Helps the glass stay clean. First time users and we are happy that it is environmentally friendly.

Greg - South West, WA

Good old fashioned customer service & award winning product

My husband and I have been using SmartBurn for many moons now. At first we weren't too sure of its effectiveness, however after removing the baffle plate we saw how much soot had sunk from our chimney. After several weeks we then noticed cleaner glass and longer wood burn and have been advocates ever since.

We now enjoy a yearly newsletter from this company which has many interesting articles. This year’s spoke about the importance of chimney draft and on reading this we had a technician come and replace our old small flue with a longer one. Our fire now roars like never before so thank you.

Recently I clumsily stoked the SmartBurn when hot and the ingredients leaked out much to my dismay. I rang the customer service line and was greeted by a lovely young lady who ran through how the SmartBurn works and told me I could still indeed use the ingredients that had run out. Not only did I receive great advice but she sent a replacement and firebrick to get us firing along again which arrived a few days later with a beautiful hand-written note.

I can’t fault this company or the exceptional service given.

Maureen - South West, WA

What's not to like!

We have used your product for over 6 years and are very satisfied.

We use wood fired heating only to heat our house. We choose good, dry wood and add a smart burn at the beginning of the season. Glass is noticeably cleaner, wood burns cleaner and leaves less ash to clean up. Our chimney is cleaned regularly and our man who does it is always impressed how clean our flue is after months of constant use.

Jean - Murray Bridge, WA

An excellent product!! Wal - Bathurst, NSW

I use SmartBurn every season!!

Joanna - Orange, NSW

Lindsay - Sussex Inlet, NSW

I have been using it for 13 years!

Been using since 2005. Willibald - Jindabyne, NSW

The Other Kind of Wood Smoke

At the time of writing this (Jan 2020) there is still plenty of summer to pass, and when you read this during the cool of winter, spare a thought for those recovering from the devastation of the bush fires experienced this past summer. Yes we have bush fires every year, furthermore exaggerated by recent drought conditions, yet never before have we as a nation had to endure such widespread, simultaneous destruction, and severity. So far bushfires have ripped through approximately 5 million hectares of land across Australia, leaving only what many described as an apocalyptic feeling behind. If climate change is making drought, heatwaves and bushfires bigger and more frequent, the horrific events of this past summer could become a regular occurrence. We acknowledge the firefighters, the strength of human spirit, pure heartache and tragedy.

southern station at Monash was 4,650 — more than 23 times the hazardous level of 200. (ABC News, 2020) The worst days during winter rarely ever exceed the 200 level. But the pollution didn’t stop there with the haze traveling 2,000km appearing over areas of New Zealand, as pictured below. As a business we at SmartBurn are very proud of the contribution that we make towards the reduction of smoke emissions from domestic wood heating, and the public health benefit that this achieves. It is with gratitude that our SmartBurn business, like many people, has been in a position to make a substantial financial donation to the Volunteer Fire Services within Australia.

But what about the air quality? Wood heating gets targeted for contribution to poor air quality, at a scale. At one point reports say Canberra’s air pollution was the highest it’s ever been, with clouds of smoke blanketing the area in only a matter of hours. The air quality index reading, a measure of 2.5 micros sized particles in the air, in the ACT's
