With$ so$ much$ focus$ on$ the$ looming$ pilot$ shortage$ and$ whether$ or$ not$ it$ truly$ exists,$ one$ aspect$ of$ the$ problem$ that$ has$ been$ mentioned$ with$some$frequency,$but$never$really$ discussed$ in$ depth$ is$ the$ actual$ cost$ of$ obtaining$ the$ ratings$ required$ in$ order$to$be$qualified$to$interview$at$a$ Part$121$Air$Carrier.$ $ One$ of$ the$ factors$ that$ are$ often$ brought$ up$ in$ discussion$ about$ the$ pilot$shortage$is$the$high$cost$of$entry$ into$the$industry.$$Since$the$US$model$ of$ flight$ training$ requires$ potential$ candidates$ to$ obtain$ the$ flight$ training$ on$ their$ own$ prior$ to$ being$ ORGANIZATION$ The$Regional$Grid$

hired,$ there$ is$ a$ very$ high$ cost$ of$ entry$ for$ the$individual$looking$to$ establish$ a$ career$ in$ aviation.$ $ This$ is$ different$ than$ the$ model$ in$ many$ other$ countries$ where$ the$ applicant$ is$ hired$ first,$ and$ then$ sent$ to$ flight$ training$provided$by$the$ airline$in$exchange$for$a$ contract$ of$ service$ (duration$ of$ these$ depends$ highly$ on$ the$ country$ and$ airline,$ but$ can$ easily$ exceed$ a$ decade$ or$ more).$ $ The$ focus$ of$ this$ article$ is$ to$ discuss$that$individual$cost$of$flight$training,$with$ an$ attempt$ to$ provide$ some$ basic$ numbers$ for$ perspective.$ $ The$ caveat$ to$ this$ comparison$ that$ needs$ to$ be$ mentioned$ though$ is$ that$ the$ total$ cost$ of$ training$ can$ vary$ wildly$ depending$ on$ location,$ type$ of$ school$ trained$ at,$ individual$ aptitude,$ and$ the$ timeline$ for$ training$ (constant$ training$versus$sporadic$lessons).$ $ The$ first$ component$ of$ flight$ training$ that$ needs$ to$be$discussed$ is$the$minimum$ number$of$hours$ required$ to$ complete$ a$ rating.$ $ For$ starters,$ the$ FAA$mandates$that$a$Private$Pilot$license$requires$ a$ minimum$ of$ 40$ hours$ of$ flight$ training.$ $ That$ hasn’t$ changed$ since$ roughly$ the$ 1960’s.$$ However,$ what$ HAS$ changed$ in$ that$ time$ is$ the$ quantity$of$knowledge$and$proficiency$required$to$ be$ demonstrated$ by$ the$ FAA.$ $ Many$ estimates$ have$ the$ average$ actual$ flight$ training$ time$ needed$to$complete$a$Private$Pilot’s$license$as$50` 60$hours,$whereas$some$estimates$can$range$to$70$ hours$ or$ more$ (AOPA).$ $ This$ could$ be$ partly$ explained$ by$ individual$ ability,$ but$ is$ more$ likely$ due$ to$ the$ much$ more$ complex$ proficiency$ requirements$ outlined$ in$ the$ FAA$ Practical$ Test$ Standards$that$have$added$a$tremendous$amount$ $

of$ knowledge$and$proficiency$ demonstration$ for$the$completion$of$a$Private$Pilot$Practical$ Test.$ $ Either$ way,$ the$ end$ result$ for$ a$ prospective$ student$ is$ a$ total$ training$ time$ that$ could$ be$ up$ to$ double$ the$ minimum$ required$by$the$FAA$in$order$to$be$considered$ competent$for$the$rating$at$check$ride$time.$ $ With$the$average$number$of$hours$estimated,$ the$ next$ cost$ factor$ that$ needs$ to$ be$ considered$ is$ the$ cost$ of$ flight$ training.$ $ It$ is$ no$secret$that$fuel$prices$have$been$at$historic$ highs$ for$ the$ last$ few$ years,$ and$ this$ will$ undoubtedly$ have$ an$ effect$ on$ total$ cost$ of$ training.$ $ According$ to$ the$ website$ www.airnav.com,$ as$ of$ Dec$ 2,$ 2014$ the$ national$average$cost$of$100LL$fuel$is$$5.78$a$ gallon$ with$a$ national$ high$of$ $9.75$a$ gallon,$ and$a$low$of$$3.80$a$gallon.$$With$an$average$ Cessna$ 172$ burning$ 8`10$ gallons$ per$ hour$ (depending$ on$ model)$ or$ a$ 150/152$ burning$ about$ 6$ gallons$ per$ hour,$ this$ becomes$ a$ significant$ cost$ factor$ that$ can$ add$ as$ much$ as$$97.50$an$hour$to$the$cost$of$flight$training.$$ Even$ at$ the$ national$ average$ of$ $5.78$ a$ gallon,$this$can$be$as$much$as$$57.80$an$hour$ for$ a$ 172,$ which$ is$ also$ the$ most$ common$

training$aircraft$in$use.$$Assuming$our$maximum$ of$ 70$ hours$ for$ a$ private$ pilot$ certificate$ and$ $57.80$ an$ hour$ for$ fuel,$ the$ fuel$ cost$ alone$ is$ going$ to$ cost$ the$ student$ about$ $4,050$ toward$ their$ training$ cost.$ $ Even$ with$ FBO’s$ or$ rentals$ that$include$the$fuel$in$the$cost$of$the$rental,$this$ is$ going$ to$ be$ incorporated$ into$ the$ cost.$$ Aircraft$rentals$including$fuel$have$also$become$ increasingly$ rare$ during$ the$ last$ few$ years$ of$ wildly$ variable$ fuel$ costs.$ $ The$ more$ common$ route$now$seems$to$be$for$a$dry$rate$plus$a$fuel$ surcharge$that$can$be$adjusted,$which$allows$the$ wet$ rate$ to$ also$ be$ adjusted$ more$ regularly.$$ Some$schools$will$use$a$basic$wet$rate,$and$then$ add$an$hourly$adjustment$on$top$of$that$for$any$ additional$fuel$costs.$ $ Next,$ we$ have$ to$ consider$ the$ cost$ of$ aircraft$ rental.$$This$cost$is$a$little$bit$harder$to$nail$down$ an$ exact$ number$ because$ the$ price$ can$ vary$ wildly$ based$ on$ the$ age,$ condition,$ and$ frequency$ of$ use$ of$ the$ aircraft.$ $ According$ to$ airplane$rental$website$www.rentplanes.com;$ in$ my$ city$ of$ Dallas,$ TX$ a$ late$ model$ Cessna$ 172$ rented$for$between$$150`155$an$hour$depending$ on$whether$or$not$it$was$G1000$equipped.$$Both$ rates$were$“wet.”$ $ The$ cost$ of$ the$ flight$ instructor$ must$ also$ be$ factored$into$the$cost$equation,$and$the$average$ cost$ in$ my$ area$ is$ $45`50$ an$ hour.$ $ Based$ on$ some$ nationwide$ searching,$ this$ seems$ to$ be$ fairly$ constant,$ with$ rates$ mostly$ remaining$ within$ about$ a$ $5$ an$ hour$ window.$ $ Of$ course,$ your$ local$ rates$ should$ always$ be$ included$ in$ your$cost$estimates.$ $ If$we$add$these$various$costs$up,$we$are$looking$ at$ roughly$ $195`205$ an$ hour$ for$ basic$ private$ pilot$ instruction.$ $ Multiplied$ out$ by$ our$ 70$ hour$ high$ side$ average,$ and$ we$ are$ looking$ at$ $13,650`$14,350$ for$ our$ flight$ instruction.$ $ On$ top$of$this$value,$we$would$need$to$add$all$of$our$ pilot$ supplies,$ FAA$ Written$ Test$ Fees,$ Aviation$ $

Medical$exam,$and$any$FAA$Practical$Testing$ Fees.$$Plan$on$about$$1,000$for$basic$aviation$ supplies$(including$texts,$flight$bag,$beginner$ headset,$ charts,$ etc.),$ $150$ for$ a$ medical$ exam,$and$up$to$$700$for$the$Examiner$Fee$on$ an$ FAA$ check$ ride.$ $ I$ know$ that$ fee$ seems$ high,$ but$ recently$ the$ FAA$ has$ been$ implementing$new$ policies$ on$ the$ maximum$ number$ of$ check$ rides$ designated$ pilot$ examiners$ can$ perform,$ which$ has$ led$ to$ a$ steep$increase$in$costs.$$It$is$always$an$option$ to$complete$the$Practical$Test$with$an$actual$ FAA$ employee,$ which$ is$ free,$ but$ is$ infrequently$ chosen.$ $ These$ miscellaneous$ costs$ will$ add$ nearly$$2,000$to$ our$ total$ cost$ of$training,$which$puts$our$total$training$for$a$ private$pilot$at$$15,650`$16,350$at$70$hours$of$ training.$ $ This$ is$not$ a$ trivial$ expense$ by$ any$ stretch$ of$ the$ imagination,$ and$ we$ haven’t$ even$ begun$ to$ talk$ about$ the$ other$ 2`3$ ratings$ required$ to$ become$ a$ commercial$ pilot$ (instrument,$ commercial,$ commercial` multi$ add$ on)$ that$ will$ get$ an$ applicant$ appropriately$ rated$ for$ an$ airline$ interview.$$ Further,$ we$ haven’t$ addressed$ the$ cost$ of$ training$ to$ become$ a$ CFI/CFII,$ which$ is$ the$ normal$ avenue$ of$ time$ building$ for$ most$ pilots$ looking$ to$ get$ hired$ at$ an$ airline$ (it$ should$be$noted$that$it$is$not$the$only$one).$ In$ the$ continuation$ of$ this$ article,$ we$ will$ examine$ the$ costs$ of$ the$ more$ advanced$ ratings$ through$ CFI/CFII$ to$ put$ the$ total$ cost$ of$training$in$today’s$environment$into$proper$ perspective$ with$regards$to$ the$cost$ of$ entry$ for$an$airline$career$versus$the$low$initial$pay$ in$the$industry.$
