A letter from Leanin’ Tree Founder Ed Trumble Thank you, my friends, for your interest in the art of the Leanin’ Tree Museum and Sculpture Garden! As I write this on my 93rd birthday, I acknowledge that my physical limitations will unfortunately prevent me from attending “my auction” (as I have come to think of it) in Scottsdale in January 2018. So my gratitude must be expressed by letter rather than in person. Oh, how I wish I could shake your hand, and thank each and every one of you, and share my hope that you are successful with a winning bid for a piece (or pieces!) of the Leanin’ Tree Museum legacy. Western art has been my life’s passion and mission. The roots of my interest in the West were planted early and deep, in a young boy’s fertile imagination, as my family scrabbled for survival on a Depression and drought-battered Nebraska farm. Riding my cow pony Sunny, with ol’ Buster my dog darting to and fro alongside pulled by every elusive scent, we—well, I—dreamt of leading great cattle drives, fightin’ off determined varmints and rustlers, and pushing deep into steep, blue valleys in pursuit of beaver, gold, wealth, fame—the collective dreams of youth. The Good Lord has been gracious in allowing me 93 winters, but I’d be lying if I said I don’t feel those years. After all, it’s not like I’m 92 anymore! My life has been blessed by God and dumb Irish luck. But even the benevolent St. Patrick can’t stop the ceaseless march of time. For several years, a decision has been looming, haunting, inescapable. What to do with my art collection? My dear wife, best friend, confidant and co-curator, Lynn Marie, has traveled this path with me through many exciting and fruitful years, as we built the collection and fulfilled our vision of the museum and sculpture garden, culminating in my 2008 book The Story of Leanin’ Tree. We have shared an unbelievably wonderful journey. It was never my expectation that my family would maintain my art museum indefinitely. They have their own lives to lead, their own dreams to fulfill—plus a great business to run! I have always cared deeply about ensuring that my family can remain dedicated to their proud work of creating and selling Leanin’ Tree’s nationally popular greeting cards. So now the time has come. We all made the emotionally difficult decision to sell the art collection and close the Museum. Because the Museum has been my lifelong project, it was personally important to me to know that my collection would come full circle in the great hall of Scottsdale Art Auction, as my art treasures find their way into the loving care of the next generation of families, collectors and museums. I wish to thank the entire team at Scottsdale Art Auction who have worked tirelessly to produce a stunning auction catalog. My friendship with SAA’s Brad Richardson extends back many decades, and even further back through Brad’s father-inlaw, Troy Murray. Oh, the art stories we could tell! I have known Brad and his partners, Jack Morris and Mike Frost, to be trusted advisors and colleagues through our many years together down the western art trail. For almost five decades it has been an unparalleled honor to have hosted several million visitors to the Leanin’ Tree Museum. I have so many treasured memories standing in my museum—surrounded by visual treasures—sharing stories of the art and artists with pilgrims young and old, all with a golden light in their eyes, awestruck by the allure and accessibility of beautiful art of the American West. I remember a woman from New York, without ever taking her tear-filled eyes off the canvas in front of her, saying to me, “That is the most beautiful painting I have ever seen.” The Leanin’ Tree Museum and Sculpture Garden has brought immeasurable joy, appreciation and awe to those who have had the privilege to experience it in person. The gratitude I feel for those who have loved the art I have loved cannot be expressed. From the depth of my soul, thank you.

266 Edward Borein 1872-1945 Painted Teepee Etching 7 x 9 inches Estimate: $200 - 400 Edward Borein’s paintings, drawings and etchings are authentic, the products of an artist who knew the life of the cowboy and vaquero. Leaving his California home at any early age, Borein drove cattle throughout the Southwest and Mexico. He enrolled in art school, but felt stifled there and went back to cowboy life, sketching the details of life on the range. Eastern periodicals bought his work and he met and befriended Maynard Dixon and Charles Russell. Borein’s fame grew in New York, but he eventually settled in Santa Barbara, becoming a fixture in the art scene there and a favorite among the Hollywood set. Fred Harman may be best known for having first failed to make a go of an animated cartoon company he founded with a guy named Walt Disney (Walt moved to Los Angeles afterward). But Harman found his own success with the Red Ryder and Little Beaver comic strips he drew until 1962. Befriending and sketching the Ute, Apache, Navajo and Paiute Indians he lived among as a cowboy. Harman’s upright cowboy inspired Daisy’s Red Ryder BB Gun, made famous as the gift Ralphie covets in the classic holiday film, A Christmas Story. 267 Fred Harman 1902-1982 Red Ryder and Little Beaver Pen & Ink 18 x 27 inches Signed lower right Estimate: $1,500 - 2,500

And yet, as you can see in works like Stampedin’ Over a Cutbank, his realism isn’t at all slavish. If anything, Speed, who was one of the first members of the Cowboy Artists of America, makes realism serve his art in a very sophisticated way. Three years later, Vickers moved to Arizona, where he devoted himself to easel paintings of Western historical subjects. Ancient Right-of-Way is one of Vickers’s most involved and poignant works. In it, old and new, indigenous and intruder, tradition and change intersect, peaceably—this time.

A Western master in oil, watercolor, gouache, and bronze, Gordon Snidow was a working cowboy and one of the charter members of the Cowboy Artists of America. Snidow, one of the first painters to make the women of the west an important part of his art, describes his artistic progress in the following way, “My childhood dreams of making pictures like Charlie Russell and Frederic Remington still persist. With maturity, I realized that the West, as I saw it in their paintings, was only a time in history. The West didn’t die when the open range was fenced—it only changed… I paint the cowboys as I see them today, doing the things I see them doing.”

329 Bill Owen 1942-2013 Sunset At Cataract Oil on canvas 12 x 22 inches Signed lower right/CA and dated 1986 Estimate: $6,000 - 10,000 Bill Owen was a working ranch hand from the time he could ride a horse, but his desire to see the lives of cowboys—as they are—represented in art, caused him to transpose his skill at observation from the range to the studio. Owen once said, “My objective is to chronicle the modern, working cowboy as he lives and works today… Not only is my public acceptance, and my fellow artists’ acceptance a tremendous compliment, but when my working cowboy friends drop by and say ‘Bill, that’s the way it really is, then I know that what I’m putting on canvas is truly worth the effort.” 330 Will James 1892-1942 Stepping Into A Water Trap Pen & Ink 9 x 9 inches Signed lower left and dated 34, titled lower center Estimate: $3,500 - 5,000 Will James was a true rover and wrangler who never strayed far from pencil and brush. After serving his sentence, James moved to California where he sold sketches, did some stunts for films, and did a stint in the Army along the Mexican border. By 1922, he was selling stories he wrote and illustrated, stories that came to the attention of famed Scribner’s editor Max Perkins (who worked with Ernest Hemingway, among many others). James published his most famous work, Smoky the Cowhorse, in 1926 and won the 1927 Newberry Medal for children’s literature. Smoky would go on to be adapted for film on numerous occasions. One of G. Harvey’s recurrent pictorial motifs concerns the theme of refuge. The world might be one giant storm—or, often, one imminent storm—that we traverse out of necessity, at our peril, but there are moments of refuge, places of community and communion, comradely gatherings in warm dwellings out of the cold, the blow, the night. The Layover depicts just such a refuge, a rest stop that is all the more welcome for being temporary. The solitary rider in Hunting by Moonlight (lot 429)—what, precisely, is he hunting?—comes out of another one of Harvey’s themes: solitude that ticks over into loneliness.

Frank McCarthy began his career in art working elbow to elbow with many famous illustrators. They painted and brawled together in the 50’s and 60’s, living the Bohemian life in what was called “The Bullpen,” a building in Midtown Manhattan that was, in reality, a hive of artists who lived from assignment to assignment as the Mad Men of the day dreamed up campaigns for pulp novels, cigarettes, lingerie and Oldsmobiles. McCarthy illustrated books and magazine stories and did posters for Hollywood—James Bond films in particular. In 1974, McCarthy shed his journeyman artist role and moved to Arizona, where he set up his easel and created some of the finest action scenes that ever leapt out of the Old West.

Flagstaff, AZ, 1969, p. 135, illustrated. A child acrobat in his native Denmark, Olaf Wieghorst made a smooth transition to successful rodeo rider after his family moved to the United States. He was also a U. S. Cavalryman on the rugged Mexican border and a mounted police officer in New York City. To say that he knew his way around horses is quite an understatement. After moving to California in 1944, Wieghorst translated an interest in art into a career depicting Western life in the saddle, taking special pride in his ability to convey the anatomy of the horse within a well-constructed scene; he was always on the lookout for the “little natural things” to add to his popular canvases. Among his many friends and the many avid collectors of his work were Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater and President Ronald Reagan. The Leanin’ Tree collection has a host of superb Wieghorst works: oils, watercolors, pen and inks, and bronzes. They range from pastoral, elegiac scenes to scenes of cowboy life filled with the drama and mystery he knew first hand.

Commercial artist by day, Western master by night, Warren lived in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, where Western art eventually won the day and he took his place in the ranks of the CAA. Lost in the Stampede, for example, is a major work, Warren’s take on the classic Western art theme of lightning spooking the herd that can easily stand with Russell’s, Remington’s, and Frank Tenney Johnson’s. Warren’s singular contribution places a riderless horse at the center of the composition. Two other cowboys look on, knowing that they must put grief and horror aside for the moment as they scramble to save the herd.

Charlie Dye was a working cowboy on a roundup with Joe Beeler and John Hampton in 1964 when they came up with the idea of the Cowboy Artists of America. Of his own art, Dye said, “I have always tried to paint what I can remember of a life a led before I became dishonest and studied art. My old man could have forgiven me if I had turned out playing piano in a whorehouse, but artists rated one step below pimps in his book.” Dye’s details of cowboy life, like the smoke from the joints of the stovepipe in Beef and Beans, as an example, unite the eye of the artist with the experience of the range.

Ken Riley was born in Missouri in 1919. He loved both music and art, played the drums, and painted. But art sunk its hooks deep, and he soon found himself studying in Kansas City with Thomas Hart Benton and in New York with George Bridgman and Harvey Dunn. After serving as a combat artist during the Second World War, Riley produced illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post and other periodicals, and traveled through Europe, North Africa, and the Far East. But the American West called him. He began to paint the Little Bighorn Battlefield, the Tetons and Black Hills, the Badlands, and the Southwest and to develop a mature style that often suggests the shallow relief of classical Greek and Roman wall carving. In 1982, Riley became a member of the Cowboy Artists of America, receiving numerous gold medals. In 1995 he won the coveted Prix de West. Ken Riley’s paintings can be found in important public and private collections including the White House, the Smithsonian Institution, the Booth Western Art Museum, and the Phoenix Art Museum. Sun edges the trees and a small herd of ponies as a brave brings them back to camp, presumably from the river of the title. Ed Trumble describes the part of Southern Colorado that provides the backdrop for this painting as “near idyllic.” And so it must have been. Whatever they’ve gone through, whatever they’re about to face, this family or band of Native Americans and their mounts are, for today, enjoying a moment of utter beauty and tranquility.

Buck McCain, a fifth generation Southern California rancher, took a few art courses while studying pre-med. His art teacher urged him to keep on and McCain painted on the side as he ranched in Nevada after college, eventually doing paintings for a department store in Los Angeles, then traveling to Europe to study. Scottsdale sculptor Ernest Berke encouraged McCain to try three dimensions, and McCain added muscular bronzes, dramatic and heroic works like Cowboy, The Monarch, and Invocation to his already notable paintings. Invocation recalls James Earle Fraser’s End of the Trail—the single Native American on a horse with its head bowed—if Fraser has cast his Indian in a mood a defiance rather than resignation. Here, instead, man and mount have a strong wind at their backs—you can see it in the horse’s mane and tail—and the prayer contained in the upraised buffalo skull is more a confirmation of strength, an assurance of victory, rather than an offering of appeasement to a deity who may not be listening.

Almost certainly the only figure in American art to claim friendship with Jackson Pollock and John Wayne, Harry Jackson was born in Chicago and grew up in his mother’s diner near the stockyards where men of the range brought their cattle to market. Jackson went West in his teens, served in the Pacific in World War II, went East to meet Pollock and paint among the new-minted Abstract Expressionists, then rediscovered realism and made the West his subject while he lived and worked in Italy.

R.Brownell McGrew worked in the film industry before becoming a full time painter specializing in Hopi and Navajo subjects. McGrew referred to himself as “an Impressionist in the classical sense,” though he paints to a much finer level of detail, as opposed to the Impressionists, and his paintings often have a “wet look” because he mixed his colors with linseed oil to achieve levels of luminosity that he felt suited the landscape and peoples of the desert. There is often a generational aspect and a sense of continuity in McGrew’s faces and figures. Taken together, Little Miss Left Hand and Hosti’ in Duggai have this now and then, past and present feel, almost as if they are flip sides of the same coin.

Of Sik Sik Shell Game, Shinabarger says, “Sik Sik” is the Inuit word for the arctic ground squirrel. In the soft Alaskan tundra, the squirrel’s burrow often has many funnel-like entrances. While the bear is furiously digging in one entrance, the prey may escape out the back door. If the bear sees or hears the squirrel leave, he pursues it to another entrance and begins digging all over again. Like a shell game, it becomes a game of chance for both predator and prey.”

Colorado native Ken Bunn is one of America’s preeminent sculptors of animals, known equally for his magnificent birds and superb mammals. Because of Bunn’s interest in animal locomotion, he will often exaggerate—deliberately—some aspect of the animal in order to draw the viewer’s attention to movement. It’s an effective strategy, whether the animal is a whitetail doe looking over her shoulder or a mountain lion on the prowl stepping silently from ledge to ledge. This life size mountain lion, Intruder, is Bunn’s entry in a long line of large American cats that have been cast in bronze. Think of animalier Edward Kemeys (18431907), whose trips to the West in the 1870’s inspired a love for the “panther.” Still Hunt still sits, and has since 1883, on an enormous rock overlooking a path in New York’s Central Park—and still scares the unwary jogger. Or Anna Hyatt Huntington (1876-1973), whose Jaguar and Reaching Jaguar loom over the Bronx Zoo in the Sculpture Garden at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Bunn’s Intruder is a worthy addition to the list of great bronzes of great cats.

The White Buffalo is one of Dyck’s most important paintings, depicting a legend he had been told, one that explains the vanishing of the buffalo, and of the Buffalo Culture he himself had witnessed and shared. “The far-ranging hunters shared strange stories. They had heard of others having seen a Buffalo Spirit in human shape riding a white buffalo and following a great herd. The buffalo returned and the people were happy. One of the architects of contemporary Western painting and sculpture, Fred Fellows grew up in Oklahoma, in close proximity to the Otoe and Osage peoples and also spent time in California as a saddle maker, cowboy, rodeo rider, and commercial artist. A member of the CAA since 1968, Fellows is perhaps best known for the movement he imparts to his figures and for capturing the drama, even in moments of stillness.

Literature: Richard G. Bowman. Walking with Beauty: The Life and Art of Gerard Curtis Delano. Denver, CO: Richard Bowman. 1990. As Richard Bowman writes in Walking with Beauty: “Bill Harmsen was a friend of Delano’s and visited his studio many times. One day Bill received a call from Jerry [Delano], and was very excited, and wanted to show him a painting he had thought to be the finest he had ever done. During his visit, Jerry told him how many times he had put the uncompleted painting aside, and not until now was he able to finish it in its entirety. ‘Dineah is one of my finest and most valuable paintings,’ Bill has also remarked.” Gerard Curtis Delano filled his lonely childhood in Massachusetts with fishing, hiking—and drawing. No one thought much of his artistic ambitions, but Delano persisted, making his way to and through art schools in New Bedford and New York, where he embarked on a career in commercial art. But the American West always fascinated Delano; some of his earliest drawings had been of Indians. Finally, in the 1920’s, he went west, had his first taste of success, then returned to the East Coast to study with N. C. Wyeth and Harvey Dunn. Afterwards, Delano headed west for good. Settling in Colorado, he made his career, and fame, painting Native Americans—the Navajo in particular—and the history of the Old West. Lush, minimally rendered masses, soft, diffuse light, and beautiful contrasting colors animate Delano’s paintings.

Wilson Hurley was a West Point graduate, Vietnam vet, engineer and lawyer. But he left these lives behind to paint the American West. Hurley studied under Josef Bakos, Theodore Van Soelen and John Young-Hunter, three important second generation Santa Fe and Taos painters. Hurley’s many murals demonstrate a deep understanding of the American landscape tradition as practiced by Bierstadt, Moran and Leigh. Wilson described A Full Moon at Sunrise on Mt. Taylor to Ed Trumble with the following words: “At dawn on the 25th of March, I watched as the full moon set behind Mt. Taylor, eighty miles to the west. As the morning sun crept over the hills behind me, the snowy ridges of the mountain emerged, and the desert floor was suddenly washed with oranges, pinks, and blues, just as you see them in the painting.”

In addition to his masterful historical works, John Clymer also painted atmospheric high country wildlife and sporting scenes. The bighorns in High Ground move through deep snow on a mountainside, staying steps ahead of the storm that rolls up the slope. After college, her paintings came to the attention of New Mexico art legend Forrest Fenn. A small chunk of wax given by Fenn to Goodacre encouraged her to try her hand at sculpture. In 1969 she produced her first piece, Ballerina, and never looked back. After pursuing her craft in Italy she embarked on her singular career: creating figures large and small, singly and in composed groups, expressive Native Americans and pioneers, children, and the elderly. She has executed commissioned portraits of noted figures, public monuments, and designed the Sacagawea dollar coin.

Pariskaroopa—Two Crows, is part of John Coleman’s Explorer Artists Series, an exploration in three dimensions of the unparalleled portraits of Native American chiefs, braves and medicine men painted by George Catlin and Karl Bodmer in the 1830’s. Faithful to the two-dimensional originals, Coleman fleshes these individuals out in all their splendor, inviting us to look at the portraits anew. An Honored Life depicts a Plains Indian chief, looking inward and back over his life and deeds with a mixture of sadness and satisfaction, a sense of having done his best.

Herb Mignery grew up on the family ranch in Nebraska. Like many Western artists, Mignery honed his skills in the armed forces, then found work in commercial illustration. In 1983, he was elected to the Cowboy Artists of America. In his book on the CAA, Michael Duty states that Mignery is a “man of many talents” and goes on to quote the artist on his approach: “Overall design is very important to me. I start with an abstract form and use opposing and intersecting lines to achieve movement and add interest to a sculpture.” (pp. 74-75) Keep that in mind. Now look at the images of Checkmate. Cast in an edition of only three, plus one artist’s proof, Ed Trumble considers Herb Mignery’s Checkmate to be the “finest piece of monumental cowboy sculpture ever done!” Honoring the daily tribulations of the working cowboy, Checkmate describes a dangerous situation that ordinary mortals can hardly imagine. Yet there is something more, something in the composition, the arrangement of man and animal, something in the way they lean against one another, force opposing force, balance on the verge of becoming unbalance, that recalls ancient depictions of charioteers in races, in battle, or out hunting, as they strain to contain, to reign in and over animals whose sole wish is to be unleashed. ‘Monumental’ is the typical word for a work like Checkmate, but ‘classical’ might not be unmerited.

After a stint in the navy in World War II, Reynolds studied art, became a commercial illustrator, and enjoyed great success as a storyboard and set artist in Hollywood. Like many artists in his generation, Bob Kuhn started out as an illustrator, contributing renderings of animals to books and periodicals. In 1970, he turned his attention exclusively to easel painting and eventually inherited the mantle worn by Wilhelm Kuhnert and Carl Rungius as the finest interpreter of big game animals. Kuhn developed a unique mature style combining the action he was already famous for with a way of arranging colors and employing a battery of strokes to create painterly compositions that harmonize animal and habitat. Kuhn balanced a desire to capture his subjects accurately with a flair for design that transmits the essential cycle of action and stillness in the natural world.

Sydney Laurence was the first Western painter to make Alaska the principal subject of his art. Laurence studied at the Art Students’s League. While there he learned to render water, rocks, and peaks in private lessons with Edward Moran. Laurence married, traveled to England and throughout Europe, and eventually became a war correspondent during the Boer War in South Africa. For reasons that remain a mystery, he left his family and lit out for the gold fields of Alaska, where he remarried and found his calling painting scenes from the rugged and beautiful Alaskan wilderness—Mt. McKinley in particular.

Conrad Schwiering affection for the West’s peaks and vastness blossomed in his native state, Colorado, but when he attended college in Wyoming and saw the Tetons, he began what would prove to be a lifelong affair of art. After a period of study at the Art Students’ League in New York and a stint in the service, Schwiering returned to Wyoming and settled in Jackson. There, he devoted his life and career to capturing the Tetons in every season and in every light.

Born in 1940, Cyrus Afsary trained in the style of famed Russian impressionists Ilya Repin and Valentin Serov. In his teens he was commissioned to paint portraits of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and other Hollywood and Las Vegas personalities. After college, Afsary broadened his horizons, painting landscapes and still lifes in addition to portraits. The American West, as Afsary paints it, is a soft-edged, beautiful place forever in a state of becoming.

The title of Curt Walters’s Grand Canyon panorama, Cimmerian Whispers, as the artist says, “comes from Homer. The Cimmerii were a mythical people in the land of darkness. The wanderings of ancient Anasazi Indians seeking refuge within the walls of this great canyon remind me of the Cimmerii!” Perhaps the Anasazi, as Walters conceives them, are the shadows that play across the many-hued layers, or perhaps they are the roving, roaming patches and streaks of light.

Like many artists, Larry Fanning began in illustration, working for Boeing Aircraft where, as he says, his “art talent was used to try to sell bombers to the Air Force.” Fanning also worked for Hallmark and Mattel but then, after some spiritual soul searching, he gathered a portfolio and sought to make a life at the easel, painting Western and wildlife subjects. He has made quite a success of it, developing a super-realistic style that emphasizes the drama in the moment he chooses to depict.

New Mexico native William Sharer’s paintings privilege design and color in a powerful manner reminiscent of Gerard Curtis Delano though Sharer’s forms are even more reduced than Delano’s. The power of Sharer’s paintings lies in the sense that the viewer gets that the artist has looked and looked and looked again at his model in Shoshone and at the oft-painted landmark church in Turquoise Door at Ranchos de Taos. Sharer knows his subjects, knows what to paint and what to leave out.

He illustrated Frank Herbert’s classic Dune. Herbert once said Schoenherr was “the only man who has ever visited Dune.” Schoenherr’s third career was as a superb painter of animals. The strong sense of design you see in his children’s books and science fiction carries over into his easel paintings. To Schoenherr, the sweep of snow and the patterns of lichen on rock are as important as the animals themselves.

A superb painter of life in the American Southwest, Burt Proctor studied with Harvey Dunn in New York, and something of Dunn’s approach—in which the artist builds a composition by applying geometries of thick paint, often with a palette knife—can be seen in Proctor’s work. On the Beach also shares some qualities with Nicolai Fechin, as forms swirl around the beautiful stillness of the woman’s face.

Hoy 1974 This lot is illustrated in The Story of Leanin’ Tree on page 437 Estimate: $3,000 - 5,000 Born and raised in Great Falls, Earle Heikka was directly influenced by the work of Charles Russell. Largely self-taught, the Depression found Heikka in desperate financial straits, though his realistic and dramatic clay models had attracted the attention of important collectors like Gary Cooper. Tragically, Heikka took his own life before most of his highly detailed, pack trains, stagecoaches, and cowboys ever saw the light of day in bronze.

Edward Fraughton’s Where Trails End was one of President Ronald Reagan’s favorite Western bronzes and was often seen in the Reagan White House. The severing of the bond between cowboy and horse in the teeth of a snowstorm, a bond Fraughton once compared to the Greek centaur—“man and horse working together almost as one body” epitomizes the artist’s interest in unity and balance in all of his compositions.
