WINTER / SPRING 2015

C A T A L O G

Dear Friend, God wants us to be in a thriving relationship with Him and in community with other people. That’s difficult to achieve by simply attending worship services. All of us need time each week with a smaller group of people who can get to know us personally, share life with us and encourage us to pursue Jesus. Life is truly better connected. As your pastor, one of my goals this year is to see everyone who calls Scottsdale Bible home find a place to connect. Whether you’re new to a relationship with Jesus, new to our church, or have been attending for years, I invite you to take the next step and explore the many ways to connect with others in our church community. This catalog is full of opportunities for you and everyone in your family to join in. I encourage you to read through the descriptions and choose at least one that grabs your attention. Whatever your age, life stage, or faith experience, there’s a place for you here. Our lives are truly more purposeful and glorifying to God when we journey together with others. Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as we see the Day drawing near. (Hebrews 10:24-25)

Your pastor and friend, Jamie Rasmussen

CHOIR AND ORCHESTRA

CHAPEL CHORALE

Rehearsals: Wednesdays, 6:30– 8:15pm, August – May Serving Commitment: Three Sundays per month at the 9am and 10:45am Shea Campus Worship Center services

The Chapel Chorale is an auditioned group that leads worship once a month in Grace Chapel. Rehearsals are on the Thursday evening before the scheduled Sunday. This group offers a high-quality spiritual musical experience in a smaller setting. The music selections range from classical anthems to current worship pieces. To schedule an interview with the director, Ken Montgomery, call 480.824.7260 or email worship@scottsdalebible.com.

Love to sing? Our choir has more than 100 vocalists ranging in age from 16 to 75 who love to use their gifts and proclaim God’s glory in song. We learn a variety of musical styles to build a diverse repertoire of music that inspires and encourages, all while connecting with other believers in a unique and fun setting. If you are interested in serving in the choir, please schedule a personal interview with Worship Pastor Troy Peterson by calling 480.824.7317 or emailing worship@scottsdalebible.com. If you play an instrument and would like to join our talented and fun group of musicians in the orchestra, please contact Instrumental Director Joe Bubar at worship@scottsdalebible.com for an audition. This group accompanies both our choir and worship music, creating an exciting, full sound for our Sunday morning Worship Center services. ________________________________________________________________________________________________

VOCAL TEAMS AND BAND Our vocal teams serve as “on mic” singers in all of our services on each campus. If you are interested in joining one of these teams, please contact us for an audition appointment. Our band musicians help anchor our weekend worship, whether as part of the orchestra, accompanying a praise team or backing a lead singer. We especially need pianists, organists, and strings, woodwind or brass players to serve in our Grace Chapel services. Rehearsals and participation is on a rotational basis and as scheduled. If you are interested in being a part of one of these teams, please schedule an audition with our Music Directors by emailing worship@scottsdalebible.com. 21

SUPPORT GROUPS

PACE (Post-Abortion Care and Encouragement)

Scottsdale Bible and our Counseling Ministry provide help and comfort through numerous support groups facilitated by lay leaders who have often had personal experience with the particular topic.

God has given us the free gift of forgiveness and freedom and doesn’t want us to feel guilty about our past. Many women carry the shame, guilt and pain of a past abortion and do not realize that their abortion may be the source of their current relationship and life challenges. If you’ve had this experience, you can learn to accept God’s free gift of forgiveness and experience true freedom through Christ. PACE is a 10-week confidential Bible study held in private homes. Groups are forming for Winter 2015. Call our confidential PACE line at 910.722.9519 for more information.

Saturday, February 28, Time TBA

This will be a special time for Cactus women to gather together for fellowship. Stay tuned for details.

WOMEN’S MENTORING PROGRAM Consider investing in and encouraging another woman in her walk with Christ. To participate in this one-on-one ministry, as a mentor or mentee, complete an application at scottsdalebible.com/women.

REACH OUR COMMUNITY DRESS A GIRL: PILLOWCASE DRESSES FOR ORPHANS

Every first Saturday, alternating between Shea & Cactus Campus Dates at Cactus Campus: February 7, April 4, June 6

Join this monthly sewing circle for fellowship and service. Even if you don’t sew, you can help by donating pillowcases or decorative items and helping create simple, sweet dresses for girls in need around the world. Hundreds of dresses have already been sent with our missionaries and we pray for each girl who receives one.

JOIN THE CACTUS CAMPUS TEAM! Serving is one of the most joyful ways to bring your personal walk with Jesus to life. We are looking for many smiling faces to join our team! Consider worshiping at one service and serving at the other. We currently need greeters, children’s leaders, worship artists and security team volunteers. Email cactus@scottsdalebible.com to learn more.

HOUSE OF REFUGE/HOUSE OF HOPE As a church, we cook and serve a meal for 20-40 men at House of Refuge, a ministry for people transitioning out of homelessness, every second Wednesday and fourth Saturday of the month. We also meet practical needs and lead a discipleship group at the facility.

Cactus women collect and deliver clothing, household and children’s items to House of Hope, a ministry to singles moms and their kids. We also plan special events to encourage the women. We currently need family support team volunteers to help moms and their children, attend monthly community dinners, and meet with moms on an individual basis. PARADISE VALLEY EMERGENCY FOOD BANK This volunteer-based food bank, located blocks from our church, provides emergency assistance to individuals and families living in the Paradise Valley School District. We volunteer, donate food, and pick up donations from schools and grocery stores. MENTOR KIDS USA Become a volunteer mentor by befriending and empowering a local youth (aged 8 to 14) who lives in poverty and difficult life circumstances. Both group and personal mentors are needed to help these kids reach their God-given potential. Personal mentors enjoy fun or educational outings twice a month with a child. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS, INC. ISI provides international students with friendship partners to help them adjust to life in America. Friendship partners commit to pray, share Christ’s love, invite their students over for family meals and holidays, take them shopping, etc. This is a low-intensity way to extend hospitality and potentially influence the lives of future world leaders.

Join with other students each Sunday as we build relationships, get to know God, and learn how the Bible relates to our daily lives. This February, we are launching a new “Takeover Series.” Students will essentially take over Sunday mornings, running everything in the Student Lounge. They will have opportunities to develop and use their God-given gifts and talents to lead in teaching, music, games or greeting. This unique and fun experience gives them a glimpse of what ministry looks like on Sunday mornings.

JUNIOR HIGH

Wednesdays, 6:30– 8pm, Student Lounge

In our Wednesday small groups, we strive to provide a place for students to further their understanding of God, the Bible and themselves. Come see your spiritual life grow, and form meaningful friendships as you take your relationship with God to the next level.

HIGH SCHOOL

MEN THURSDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY Thursdays, 7am, Student Lounge Leaders: Brian Hoekstra and Dr. Dorsett Smith

The Thursday morning Bible study group is composed of a few dozen men with a unique depth and breadth of knowledge and experience including multiple PhDs, MDs, CEOs and captains of industry, several military veterans, educators, international management consultants, and countless bad golfers. We are harnessing all this experience, knowledge, and talent to meet the unique challenges of a postmodern world by becoming both disciples (learners) and disciple-makers. We are able to do so not because of our worldly qualifications but because we are compelled by love to share the good news to a world hungry for truth. One way to accomplish this is to publicly share the discussions, notes, and resources we’ve assembled in our quest to better understand our Creator. Feel free to enjoy and share these resources as we journey from religion to an authentic relationship with the living God.

TUESDAY EVENING BIBLE STUDY Tuesdays, 5:30– 6:30pm, Student Lounge Leaders: Ken Bohlen and Gary Graf

Join us on Tuesday nights as we meet up to study God’s Word and share life together. We are currently studying the Lord’s Prayer together. This is a great opportunity for all men who are looking to go deeper in their faith and get involved in a solid community. Childcare is provided.

MARKETPLACE BIBLE STUDY (MBS)

Wednesdays, 7– 8am Alliance Defending Freedom (15100 N. 90th Street, Scottsdale) Teachers: Pastor Neil Montgomery & Pastor Jamie Rasmussen

Realizing that much of Jesus’ original ministry and teaching was accomplished Monday through Saturday during the hustle and bustle of marketplace activity, the goal of the MBS is to offer men an opportunity to take a break from their busy schedules and focus on needed and significant spiritual truth. Functioning also as an outreach into the community, it is our hope that men would feel comfortable inviting their seeking friends and co-workers to this study.

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDIES James: A Beth Moore Study

Tuesdays, January 13– March 10, 9:30– 11:30am, Room #9, $20 Teacher: Pam Bakalar

James, Jesus’ own brother, started out as a skeptic. See how one glimpse of the resurrected Savior turned an unbeliever into a disciple. Topics in this study include: joy, hardship, faith, reversal of fortunes for rich and poor, wisdom, gifts from above, single-mindedness, the dangers of the tongue, humility and prayer. Experiencing the Power of God’s Name

Tuesdays, January 13– March 3, 6:30– 8pm, Room #9, $15 Teacher: Linda Compton

To know God is to know His character, and that character is revealed in His names. Each name is an aspect of His sovereignty in your life. You’ll find strength for times of trial, comfort for pain, and provision for your soul’s deepest needs. If you want a deeper, abiding faith, this study is for you.

It began in 2005 with a simple mission: to support a small group of orphans in Kenya whose parents died of AIDS. In 2007, Pastor Joseph came to Mountain Valley Church with the hope of gaining the commitment of eight sponsors. After sharing the heartbreaking story and plight of the orphans in his community, the church responded with 76 commitments. With several churches and donors now throughout the U.S., construction funds and more sponsors have started supporting the orphans. In 2012, Africa Hope Center moved into its new home with 110 children being housed, fed, and educated. They also receive medical attention and counseling. To adopt an orphan or donate toward the center, contact mountainvalley@scottsdalebible.com.
