The ACE Program Achieving a College Education Welcome to the ACE Program at Scottsdale Community College! ACE refers to Achieving a College Education. The ACE Program is for high school students who have just completed their sophomore year. The ACE Program targets students who may not be thinking about attending college. Students who apply to the ACE Program have the opportunity to experience college while still attending high school. If chosen to participate in the ACE Program, students are mentored through their last two-years of high school. The purpose of the ACE Program is to retain students in high school and ensure their transfer to the community college or other institutions of higher education after graduating from high school. The ACE Program gives high school students the opportunity to experience college long before they graduate from high school. By bringing students into the college environment while they are still in high school, the transition into full-time college life will become easier. Students who participate in the ACE Program will: •
Enhance their abilities in Critical Analysis and Effective Communication in Written, Oral, Visual, and Numerical forms through General Education curriculum and co-curricular experiences at Scottsdale Community College
•
Take college courses offered during the summer in a cohort format and the students transition into regular college course work in spring and fall semesters, in addition to their high school classes.
•
Participate in summer programs, which include field trips to state universities, businesses and industries, when available.
•
Prepare for employment in a technical or occupational field.
•
Be ready to transfer to a university.
•
Be exposed to a variety of vocational and career options/opportunities.
•
Be able to apply for one of the two types of scholarships available to ACE students: • The Maricopa Grant Scholarship Application is for students capable of providing evidence of lawful presence in the United States. • The Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation Scholarship Application is for students who are unable or decline to provide the documentation.

Participating students are responsible for the purchase of textbooks and transportation to and from the Scottsdale Community College campus. If an ACE student transfers to another high school, he/she may still participate in ACE. Transportation to Scottsdale Community College remains the student’s responsibility. (Please notify the ACE Advisor should this occur.)
SUMMER CLASSES: The ACE student is expected to attend summer classes following his/her sophomore years of high school. These are the important components of the program. Regular summer ACE college classes are held during a five-week term in which the students will take two classes (6 credits) for college credit. Summer terms generally start in late May or early June. ACE PROGRAM GUIDELINES ATTENDANCE: Scottsdale Community College and the ACE Program subscribe to the belief that college class attendance is essential to academic success. The following attendance policy is in effect to help ensure success and to prepare students for the expectations and demands of their full-time college experience. ACE Program Attendance Policy is: Student must adhere to instructor’s absence policy as outlined in the course syllabus. Regardless of the reason, if a student is not physically in the classroom during the scheduled class time, that student is considered absent. Examples of generally acceptable “excused absences” would be a death in the family, personal/family emergencies and illness with a doctor’s note. The student is still responsible for any missed class work. Examples of unexcused absences are doctor appointments, band practice, sports activities, etc. Check your syllabus for ‘absence’ definition according to instructor’s policy.
STOP OUT POLICY: A ‘STOP OUT’ allows a student to concentrate on high school studies or extra-curricular activities for a given semester WITHOUT being dropped from the ACE Program. Students with a ‘STOP OUT’ will simply not be registered for class/es for ONE semester (of student’s choice) without penalty. A student may use a ‘STOP OUT’ for any semester EXCEPT for the first summer session. A student may NOT use ‘STOP OUT’ TWO consecutive semesters; otherwise, the student will be dropped from the ACE Program.
GRADING: ACE students will begin an official college transcript, which will become a part of the student’s permanent records. Grades may be obtained through ‘MyMaricopa’ or a paper copy can be requested in person with valid photo identification. Check the Catalog for more information on SCC’s grading scale. Prerequisite courses require a grade of ‘C’ or better to advance to the higher level. Completed 100 level or above courses, with a grade of ‘C’ or better, may be eligible for transfer to another college or university. VERY IMPORTANT Any student with a grade of ‘D or F’ will complete a Student Probation Contract. The contract indicates that the student will retake the course(s) the following semester and pass with a ‘C’ or better. If student does not pass the course(s) the second time, the student will be asked to give up the scholarship or pay out of pocket to retake the course again to be reconsidered to stay in the program. No other course(s) will be taken until the repeated course(s) has been completed with a passing grade. Students must adhere to the above requirement.
