Championship Preview
F
or all the success that Trinity Western’s women’s soccer program has had in the last five years – three Canada West championships, two conference silver medals, two U SPORTS silver medals and one U SPORTS bronze medal – there’s one thing this particular group of Spartans has yet experience: winning a national title. Indeed, the Spartans have medalled in three of the last four U SPORTS tournaments and played in two of the last four national championship gold medal matches, but the rather strange reality remains: not one player on this year’s roster has a national title to her name. This year, the Canada West champion Spartans, whose illustrious history includes five national championships, have one thing in mind: bringing the Gladys Bean Memorial Trophy back to TWU. And for a squad that finished the season ranked No. 1 in the U SPORTS Top 10, possesses the Canada West Player of the Year in Seina Kashima, can lay claim to four conference all-stars and just recently captured its second straight conference championship, there’s every reason to believe this year’s team has the talent, the will and the motivation to return to the top of the mountain. Coming off a 12-2-0 regular season in which the Spartans tied their program record for wins in a season, equaling a mark set in 2011 (12-1-1), TWU advanced through the Canada West playoffs with wins over Fraser Valley (QF – 1-0 OT), Alberta (SF – 3-2) and Calgary (F – 1-0). Remarkably, in all three games, fourth-year striker Rachel Hutchinson, who was injured for the latter part of the season, scored the game-winning goals.
Their playoff success, which saw TWU compete in the Canada West gold medal match for the eighth consecutive year, earned the Spartans a berth into the national tournament for the 12th time in program history and the eighth year in a row. Having won 15 of 17 games this year, including regular season and playoffs, the Spartans will ride a wave of momentum into the U SPORTS Championship that has the Langley side in form and set to make a return to the national tournament success that once saw TWU play in four consecutive national finals (2012-2015) and, going back further, win five national titles in a 10-year span (2004-2013). Led by Kashima up front, who finished the regular season with a Canada West single-season record and U SPORTS-leading 13 assists to go with seven goals, the Spartans offence is as dynamic as any team in the country. TWU finished with a conference-best 44 goals in 14 games and had seven players score four or more goals. Along with Kashima, the Spartans mined plenty of offensive magic from the likes of scoring leaders Gabi Short (7G, 5A), Amy Gartke (6G, 4A) and Jenaya Robertson (6G, 4A). Further down the list, TWU’s scoring success saw Kathleen Chin (5G), Kathryn Harvey (4G) and Elizabeth Hicks (4G) buoy a balanced attack. And all that doesn’t even include a now in-form Hutchinson, who can be as dangerous an offensive threat as they come.
Just behind the aforementioned trio is a Spartans back line that, over the years, has consistently rivalled any defensive unit in the country. With Brooklyn Tidder and Hicks, who was named a Canada West Second Team All-Star, holding down the centre back roles and Canada West First Team All-Star Kristen Sakaki and Aliya Coy handling duties on the outside, TWU has a staunch group of defenders that allowed just one goal per game in the regular season and only two goals in three playoff games. In goal, fifth-year Rachel Sydor has been a tower of strength for the Spartans in her first year as TWU’s starting goalkeeper. Sydor earned all 12 wins for the Spartans and had six clean sheets over her 14 regular season starts. With five national championships in their history, the Spartans enter this year’s U SPORTS tournament as the most decorated program in the event. But, history is just that. This group has only heard of such things. This year, they’re aiming to experience it.
While the trio of Gartke, Robertson and Chin have indeed pushed TWU’s offensive agenda – the numbers tell that tale – the Spartans go-to midfielders have also been defensive stalwarts, conducting the course of play with a high-possession focus.

SEINA KASHIMA
CANADA WEST PLAYER OF THE YEAR CANADA WEST FIRST TEAM ALL-STAR U SPORTS FIRST TEAM ALL-CANADIAN Seina Kashima had an historic fifth and final year at Trinity Western, as she set the Canada West single-season assists record, with 13 in 14 games. Add to that the seven goals she scored and Kashima finished tied for the conference lead in points, with 20, which put her in a tie for the third best single-season points total in conference history. Kashima also finished the year with three game-winning goals as she led the Spartans to a 12-2-0 Pacific Division-leading record in the regular season. With her 13-assist season, Kashima completed her university career as the all-time assists leader in Canada West history, with 40. She finished tied for third on the Canada West all-time points list, with 58. Kashima is the third Spartan’s women’s soccer player to win the Canada West Player of the Year award, following Jessica King in 2014 and Nikki Wright in 2008. GRAHAM ROXBURGH – TWU SPARTANS HEAD COACH “I am really pleased for Seina as she has had a wonderful season and indeed a very special career. She has been the attacking force this year and throughout her career that helped lead her team to accomplish some terrific achievements. She has worked really hard to become a more complete player this season and I am delighted she is being recognized for the talent and impact player that she has always had and been. “Seina has an ability to change games with her creativity and pace and ability to unlock defences in so many ways. She is the all-time assist leader and has scored amazing goals. It has been a privilege to watch her grow as a player and more importantly a person over the past five years.”

2018 Spartans Women’s Soccer C A N A DA W E ST C H A M P I O N S SPARTAN ATHLETICS: Mission Statement
In full concert and support of the University mission statement…Spartan Athletics develops godly Christian leaders equipped to succeed in dynamic environments, persistently advancing to the edge of their abilities, shaping and transforming sport and culture, and growing in their personal relationships with Jesus Christ.
SPARTAN ATHLETICS: The Complete Champion Approach The Complete Champion Approach helps Spartan Student-Athletes become complete people and champions in all areas of their lives. This program seeks to address the whole person (spiritual, physical, intellectual, emotional, and social). Some student-athletes may not realize how much they can accomplish if they address all areas of their lives and take on life to the fullest. The Complete Champion Approach is to help student-athletes use their God-given talents and intellect to live a life of significance, experiencing true personal success and powerfully influencing their family and their community. Another significant goal is for Athletics to aid the functions of Student Life and avail ourselves of the services and opportunities already existing and under development through the Student Life Department.

Story of TWU: in 1961, a small group of people had an extraordinary vision to establish a Christian university in Canada to prepare leaders of integrity. They purchased Seal-Kap Dairy Farm, and opened the first classes of Trinity Junior College in the fall of 1962 with 17 students. The College quickly grew to 800 students by 1984, when it was granted membership in the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC). In 1985, the British Columbia legislature granted it a charter under the name Trinity Western University. Trinity Western takes a unique approach to university education. Working from a Christian worldview, it combines ethics and morality with career-oriented disciplines in an integrated learning community. It facilitates whole person development and transforms many young men and women with a vision to make a positive contribution to the world. Building on its well-recognized academic programs, the University has recently launched a School of Business, School of Education and the Laurentian Leadership Centre in Ottawa. The mission of Trinity Western University, as an arm of the church, is to develop godly Christian leaders: positive, goal-oriented university graduates with thoroughly Christian minds; growing disciples of Jesus Christ who glorify God through fulfilling the Great Commission, serving God and people in the various marketplaces of life. 7600 Glover Road, Langley, B.C., Canada, V2Y 1Y1 P: 604.888.7511 F: 604.513.2061 Web: www.twu.ca

Roxburgh first came to Trinity Western University in 1993 as an assistant to coach Alan Alderson with the men’s soccer program. At the time, he was working with Athletes in Action and had just graduated from Wheaton College (Illinois) with a BA in History and Biblical Studies. He was later recommended to take over the women’s program and was hired as head coach in 1998. The fall of 1999 marked his first season with the team, which was only three years after women’s soccer became a varsity sport at TWU. In 2000, Roxburgh guided the women to a 6-3-1 record and was named BCCAA Coach of the Year. Roxburgh currently serves as the general manager and technical director for the Fraser Valley Action within the PCSL. He also operates the Spartan Soccer Academy, which is a player development academy for young female players. With Athletes in Action, Roxburgh has coached and played against several national teams from around the world including Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, South Africa, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Paraguay and Croatia.

2018 Spartans Women’s Soccer C A N A DA W E ST C H A M P I O N S 2004 Spartans put TWU on the map Brian Swane, Special to Canada West EDMONTON - Erin-Marie Alhayek wasn’t aware she and her teammates had just made history. Not once did it cross her mind that they had broken new ground. It wasn’t until the Trinity Western Spartans celebrated after the 2004 Canadian women’s soccer gold medal game and coach Graham Roxburgh gave a victory speech that she realized they were the first team from the Langley school to become CIS champs. “I did not think about that at all,” says Ahayek (nee Higgins). “It was my second year and I had no idea what it was like to make the playoffs or go to a national championship at that level. It was a complete whirlwind. “Graham had to let us know how much a win like this meant for the school as it helped put TWU on the map for sports and in general by getting that first win.” In just its fourth season of CIS soccer, TWU dramatically rallied to upset the host McGill Martlets for a championship so unbelievable that it’s taken over a decade to fully process. “Now that it has been a few years, I realize how fortunate we were to win one,” says Alhayek, a defender who played five seasons for the Spartans from 2003 to 2007. “It is not easy to win a national championship, especially back then when Canada West only had one berth to the championship. I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to go through that season and especially to go through a national championship run that culminated in a win.” Before 2004, no TWU team had so much as qualified for nationals in any varsity sport. When the women’s soccer team brought home the Gladys Bean Memorial Trophy, Spartan spirit resonated throughout TWU’s student body of about 3,000 and far beyond the boundaries of its Metro Vancouver campus. “We had amazing support from people back home … and after we won the euphoria and hype around the team was phenomenal,” says Alhayek. “There were tons of people at the airport to meet us including a news crew, and back at Trinity everyone knew about it and was elated.” At the outset of the 2004 campaign, the Spartans aimed to simply play later on the calendar than the year prior, when they missed the post-season entirely. That was far from certain with TWU hovering around the middle of the Canada West standings halfway through their schedule. Then the Spartans won 3-0 at Victoria and went undefeated over their final seven matches to finish in second place. “After that game in UVic, we knew we had something special and we ran with it,” Alhayek says. The Spartans carried their hot streak into the Canada West playoffs at UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium. There, they bested the Vikes 1-0 in a semifinal before blasting Calgary 4-0 in the gold medal match to give their school its first conference title and national championship berth. At nationals, TWU opened with a scoreless draw versus UPEI, followed with a 7-0 victory over the co-host Montreal Carabins. With a 1-0-1 record, the Spartans finished atop Pool A and advanced to the gold medal final, against Pool B winners McGill. The championship game started as most of the fans at Molson Stadium anticipated, with their heavily favoured Martlets scoring in the 19th and 21st minutes while keeping TWU off the board to head into the break with a considerable advantage. “One thing Graham always said is that a 2-0 score at half is the worst lead you can have, and it has been proved over and over again to me that it is true because the team that is leading gets a bit complacent as they think they have the game in the bag,” Alhayek says.
“I do not remember if he mentioned this at half time of the final, I just remember that he believed in us and we believed in each other and that is what pushed us forward.” The Spartans’ first goal came just four minutes into the second half, with Alhayek setting up Emily Bond for a chip that made the score 2-1. Their second goal almost never came. Still trailing by one as the match entered injury time, TWU finally got the equalizer it had desperately sought for 40-plus minutes when Rachelle Armstrong lobbed a shot over McGill goalkeeper Victoria Villalba with barely a moment to spare. The score remained level through a pair of 15-minute overtime periods, leaving it up to a shootout to decide the national champion. TWU scored on two if its first three kicks, while the Martlets missed on all three, with one going wide and two stopped by Spartans keeper Angela Garriott. McGill’s Eloise Vanda stepped to the spot for her team’s fourth attempt needing a goal to stay alive. Garriott stopped her cold. “Angela Garriott was fantastic in shootouts for us all season,” says Alhayek. “Her saving (three) was unbelievable. At that level you are fortunate if you get one save. I just remember the pure exuberance when she made that final save. I do not think we knew what hit us.” Over the last dozen years, the Spartans have become a consistent force in women’s soccer, capturing the Gladys Bean Trophy in 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, with hopes of winning a sixth national title when Manitoba hosts the 2017 U SPORTS Women’s Soccer Championship, Nov. 9 -12. There have been other U SPORTS gold medals for the school, with TWU’s men’s volleyball program winning in 2006, 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2016 and women’s volleyball adding the most recent two years ago. A number of Spartans track and field competitors have individual national titles to their credit, too. The championships will continue to add up over the years, but the first will always be the first. “I think the legacy for us that year was that we were trailblazers for a small school that was going on to do big things,” Alhayek says. “Even though we were the first to put Trinity on the map, there have been multiple championships by the women’s soccer team, the volleyball teams, and the track teams since. I believe that by us winning that title, it had a huge impact for the women’s soccer program in terms of the quality of players Graham and his coaching staff were able to recruit. “It always astounds me at how small of a school Trinity is, yet they keep doing so well athletically,” she adds. “It is a special place with a lot of special people.” -CW-
