Cleveland State University’s Summer Camp is starting up soon! Last summer, every session was full, and this summer’s sessions are filling quickly. What make CSU’s Summer Camp so popular? We offer two daily sessions, a morning Sports and Fitness Camp and an afternoon Arts and Crafts Camp, giving your child a variety of experiences everyday. Our camp has also been extended to ten weeks, giving your child an extra two weeks of fun this summer. Well Fest 2010 Recap
Skin Protection in the Sun
Damaging effects of the sun can effect people of all ages. Therefore, it is very important that we try our best to protect our skin from the long-term and short-term damaging effects from the sun. Overexposure to the sun without protection can result in painful sunburns and lead to skin cancer, wrinkles, and age spots later on in life. This overexposure is caused by both the visible rays and invisible rays called UVA (ultraviolet A) and UVB (ultraviolet B). The UVA rays are the type of sun rays that will pass through glass windows and reach the thickest layer of skin in your body causing premature aging to your skin. It can also suppress the immune system which can effect the immune systems ability to fight off skin cancer. On the other hand, UVB rays are the main cause of sunburn because they are the burning rays from the sun. continued on p. 4...

WellFest 2010 Recap Thank you to all who attended WellFest on Wednesday April 21st! Attendants were able to enjoy 25 different vendor tables, hourly raffle prizes and a grand prize raffle! The vendors kept attendees busy with free food samples, free health screenings, free depression screenings, and a chance to spin Kaiser’s Wheel of Health. The day kicked off with a visionary speech from President Berkman. He then introduced Women’s Head Basketball Coach Kate Peterson Abiad, who spoke a few motivational words before leading the WellFest Kickoff Walk around the Rec Center Track. WellFest was able to accomplish the main goal of spreading health awareness throughout campus and the surrounding community. Participants walked away with raw health assessment numbers reflecting their overall wellness and had the opportunity to visit a variety of vendors for the support needed to improve or maintain those numbers. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at next year’s WellFest where we will have the same great opportunities to offer and so much more!

One cup of Quaker eats up 20 percent of your day’s energy needs and saddles you with as much sugar as a Snicker’s bar. That’s indulgent even by dessert standards. The culprit in this box is the combined impact of brown sugar and coconut oil. What you want to do is switch to a lighter granola like Kashi’s GoLean Crunch, Try using just a handful as a topping for unsweetened whole grain cereal or oatmeal. Now that’s a recipe for a good breakfast!

Workout of the Month: Dumbbell Pullover
Step 1 Lie faceup on a flat bench, holding a dumbbell above you at arms length with your hands cupping the inner plate. Arms should be perpendicular to the floor. Step 2 Keep a slight bend in your elbows, inhale deeply, squeeze shoulder blades together and slowly lower the weight in an arc until arm becomes parallel with the floor. Step 3 Pause briefly at the bottom before driving the weight back up, keeping arms fixed throughout and exhaling forcefully at the halfway point. Pause again when arms return to perpendicular, squeezing your lats before beginning next rep. Primary muscles: Latissimus Dorsi Pectoralis Mator
Secondary muscles: Triceps Levator scapulae
Did You Know?
Did you know that adding weight lifting to your routine will help you burn fat faster? Lifting weights increase your metabolism and will result in a much more effective method to lose fat than focusing only on cardio. Cardio tends to boost your metabolism before and after a workout, but weight lifting will not only raise your metabolism during the exercise—but for a long time after, too.
