annual shutdown leaves rec center sparkling The annual Maintenance Shutdown proved to be another success. The Maintenance Shutdown is a week long period in which the entire Rec Center and Busbey Natatorium are closed to members. During this closure, the Rec Center employees conduct an extensive cleaning and restoring of the facilities.

We also put the wheels in motion to relocate the pro shop. During the month of June, the new home of the pro shop will be in the empty space next to the customer service desk. We hope you enjoy the efforts of our spring cleaning!

To be more specific, the Rec Attendants and even the professional staff freshened up each locker room, cleaned every locker in the entire facility, treated the interior walls and handrails to a new coat of paint, buffed and waxed the floors, and detailed the fitness machines on a whole new level.

Ask the Dietitian: Sugar, Friend or Foe? Meet Your Trainer: Clare Barry Move of the Month Awesome Abs Trainer Knows Best Healthy Salad Recipe
ASK THE DIETITIAN Sugar: Friend or Foe? There are two main types of sugar: added and natural. Added sugars are found in processed foods and drinks. Naturally occurring sugars are found in whole foods like fruit and milk; milk contains lactose, a naturally occurring form of sugar. Our bodies can tell the difference between foods that contain added sugars and those which are naturally sweet. Since our bodies do not need the added sugar which is found in processed foods, our bodies do not burn all the calories from those foods. Consequently, the remaining calories of the food will be stored as fat. Tips for reduced-sugar grocery shopping include checking the food’s label to see how much sugar the food contains, looking for the “total carbohydrate” listing instead of the “sugar” listing, and to choose fruit products that say “noadded-sugar.”
HEALTHY RECIPE Citrus Salad with Honey-Lime Dressing Ingredients: 1/4 cup honey 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1/2 teaspoon grated lime zest 3 pink grapefruits 3 navel oranges 3 tablespoons small mint leaves or chopped mint
Instructions: 1. In a large bowl, whisk the honey, lime juice and zest. 2. Cut and peel the white pith from the grapefruits and oranges. Slice the fruit into rounds, add to the bowl and gently toss to combine. Sprinkle with the mint before serving. Make-ahead tip: Cut the fruit and refrigerate for up to 2 days. Before serving, gently toss with the honey, lime juice and zest, and sprinkle with mint.
Artificial sweeteners Equal (aspartame) and Splenda (sucralose), as well as the natural sugar substitute, Stevia, are popular sugar alternatives. A rule of thumb for sugar substitutes: if they help you keep your weight under control and you don’t consume excessive quantities, the benefits typically outweigh any risks. Aim for one to two packets or one artificially sweetened item, like a yogurt, per day. Beware that they leave sweetness on your taste buds, which may exacerbate cravings. In conclusion, it’s very important to reduce your overall sugar intake. To reduce sugar intake, limit sugary drinks, add only 1-2 teaspoons of table sugar per meal or beverage, and limit the amount of sugar substitutes to 1 or 2 items per day.

Editor’s corner After a long, cold winter, we are finally feeling the warm sunshine on our faces in Cleveland – what a perfect time to exercise outdoors! To make your walking sessions extra meaningful and productive, try walking with a dog! Research shows that those who walk with a furry friend walk faster and longer than those who walk alone. If you don’t have a dog to walk with, try contacting your local Humane Society and volunteer to walk their dogs; better yet, adopt one and have an exercise buddy every day. Look for ways to keep your dog safe during the “dog days of summer” in July’s newsletter!

Trainer Knows Best Editor of the Recreation Center newsletter, Jacquie Welch, went to our personal trainers with this dilemma:
“Even though school is out for the summer, it is still difficult for me to find the time to exercise regularly while working and interning. How do I find time to exercise with all the responsibilities I have?” After consulting with our personal trainers, she came up with the conclusion that she must learn to balance her daily activities and responsibilities better so that each area of her life gets the attention it deserves. She was also told to view exercise as a valuable tool to stay healthy and prevent illness, not to look at it as a chore. After hearing those words of wisdom, she feels confident she can feel good and look good, too!
