CSU Campus Recreation Services

Campus Recreation Services is housed in the 110,000 square foot 3-story Recreation Center that adjoins the Physical Education Building, allowing shared use of the Busbey Natatorium. Amenities include two lap pools; basketball, volleyball, racquetball and squash courts; a multipurpose gymnasium; weight rooms and cardiovascular areas; a circuit training area; an indoor track; table tennis tables and billiard table; three multipurpose activity studios; locker rooms; lounge areas; and Glenn’s Energy Oasis juice bar.

Did you forget your socks, shirt or shorts for your workout? What about shower supplies or deodorant? Maybe you need equipment for any of the racquet sports we offer such as racquetball, squash, or badminton—we have it here at the pro shop. Stop in and pick up whatever you may need—swim goggles, swim caps, boxing gloves, racquetballs, squash balls, toothpaste, or even locks for locker use. It is all available to you at the Pro Shop located inside Equipment Issue. We accept cash, credit, and Viking Cash. Stop in and see us today!

Part-time Faculty/Staff/Business Partner

Part-time employees with at least a 50% appointment with Cleveland State University are eligible for this membership during the semester the appointment is active. Part-time faculty/staff are NOT eligible for payroll deduction. A business partner is an employee of a company affiliated with Cleveland State University through a management agreement to provide campus services. Recognized Campus Organizations and Departments can hold their event in the Recreation Center on a space-available basis. For large events please contact Conference Services for more information. The Recreation Center offers activity space rentals to non-affiliated community members at the external rate. Space can be used for special events or ongoing sport leagues. Saturday and Sunday, May 15 and 16 from 12–4 pm. The Verizon Wireless Swim for Diabetes, now in its 25th year, is the major fundraiser for the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland (a local, independent organization, not affiliated with the American Diabetes Association or Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). Participants may participate as an individual or a team and collect pledges per length or flat donations to support their participation in the event.

The Intramural Sports Program provides a variety of leagues and tournaments throughout the year to all students, faculty, staff and recreation center members. These contests emphasize mental, social, and physical well-being. Intramural Sports builds a community atmosphere for the university through friendly competition. The All Sports Championship is a way to determine which team will have bragging rights for the 20092010 school year. All team members can earn valuable points towards the championship trophy. Check out the website for all rules and details.

Any person who does not have a team to participate on can sign up as a free agent. The Assistant Director for IM’s, Sport Clubs & Summer Camps will compile the pool of free agents and any teams that are seeking extra members will be able to pick up a free agent from the pool before the start of the league. The remaining free agents will then be placed on free agent teams by the Assistant Director for IM’s, Sport Clubs & Summer Camps.

Summer Camps

Are you looking for a summer camp for your child that offers something more? Cleveland State University’s Summer Camp has it all! Using our dynamic university setting, your child will have the opportunity to explore active sports, creative arts, different cultures, natural wonders, and more. Our experienced camp counselors and exciting camp activities, will help your child develop self confidence and become more independent, all while encouraging an active, healthy lifestyle and hands-on, engaged learning! Cleveland State University’s Summer Camp is ten consecutive 1 week camps for 6 –12 years old, consisting of a morning and/or an afternoon session each day. Campers may be enrolled in both sessions. Morning and afternoon snacks will be provided, but campers enrolled in both sessions should bring a packed lunch from home. Camp sessions are facilitated by trained counselors and staff. All staff is required to have current First Aid/CPR/AED certifications and carry first aid kits and two way radios at all times. Our camper-to-staff ratio is 8:1 for all age groups.

Sports and Fitness Camp–Morning

Morning Session: 7:30 AM–12:30 PM The morning sports and fitness camp works with campers to foster a healthy, active lifestyle. Campers will be on the go everyday with different fitness activities—soccer, volleyball, basketball, swim lessons and more. The campers will also work with Monica, our Registered Dietician, on developing healthy eating habits. This session is great for children who are active and/or want to develop healthier habits!

Craft and Activity Camp–Afternoon

Afternoon Session: 12:30 PM– 5:30 PM The afternoon craft and activity camp follows a more traditional summer camp design. Each week has a separate theme, with exciting games, crafts, and learning experiences. Last summer campers explored their musical talents with CSU's music department. Had fun in the sun with outdoor games, and enjoyed the fun and excitement of our summer carnival.

Home School Sports and Swim Looking for a way for your home school child to interact with other home school children? We have your answer! We are eager to announce the beginning of our Home School Sport and Swim Program. We invite your family to enjoy some fun in the pool, followed by kid-friendly activities on the first Wednesday of every month. This program is available to all Home School families. Parents are encouraged to come and network with other parents while your children are enjoying their activities!

The Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program. This course will be taught by nationally certified R.A.D. Instructors and provide each student with a workbook/ reference manual. The class is FREE for members and will meet for every Sunday in February from 1:30 PM– 5 PM at the Rec Center. Nonmembers must pay a guest fee of $9 to enter the facility each week. Swim lessons are taught according to the American Red Cross standards. Instructors are experienced and certified Water Safety Instructors. The student– instructor ratio is kept low for optimum learning. M: $40 NM: $50 (walking–3 years) For children who are walking to 3 years of age. A safe, fun start in the water with a trusted adult. Only one child per adult.

Preschool 1, 2 & 3 (ages 3–5 years) The child should have attended at least one Parent and Preschool or Parent and Tot program. The child should be comfortable with an instructor without a parent in the room. Skills taught are consistent with Level 1, 2 and 3.

Level 1 Introduction to Water Skills

Competitive Swim Skills Training

(age 6 and over) Balance, comfort and independence in the water are the primary focus. Rhythmic breathing is introduced. Safe entries and exits as well as arm and leg movements through the water are performed.

(Level 5, 6 for ages 8-18) Stroke technique and efficiency is the focus. Participants must be able to swim 25 yards of Freestyle (a.k.a. Front Crawl) and Backstroke (a.k.a. Back Crawl). Skills worked on will include freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, competitive starts and turns.

Level 2 Fundamental Aquatic Skills (age 6 and over) Balance and movement through the water are the primary focus. Changing position from front to back float, beginner stroke with rhythmic breathing, sculling and flutter kick on back are performed.

Level 3 Stroke Development

Adult Beginner

For adults who do not have experience in the water. The goal is to overcome any fear of water and to teach the basic swimming techniques. Participants will work on water adjustment, balance, flutter kick, rhythmic breathing and arm movements.

(age 6 and over) Development of front crawl and elementary backstroke is primary focus. Deep water skills including diving, underwater swimming, treading water and survival float are performed. Independence and comfort in deep water is essential for this level as some classes are held in deep water.

Adult Intermediate

Level 4 Stroke Improvement

For adults who can perform the front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, and sidestroke. The goal is to develop proficient and quality strokes. The butterfly, speed turns and flip turns will be taught.

(age 6 and over) Front and back crawl are refined. Sidestroke and breaststroke kick are developed. The butterfly is introduced, and head first entries from the deck, the diving board, and starting blocks are learned. Ability to swim front crawl 25 yards is a prerequisite for this level as lessons are held in lap lanes.

Summer Monday–Friday AM

For adults with a basic understanding of swimming and are comfortable in the water. The goal is stroke efficiency. Participants will work on freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke. Additional strokes will be introduced.

This one-session class gives anyone age 10 and above the opportunity to try SCUBA diving and actually see what it is like to breathe under water. This 1.5-hour program provides all the equipment and expert training necessary to take you safely beneath the surface (and back again!!). If you sign up for the SCUBA certification class beginning February 15 or March 24, 2010 at the CSU Recreation Center, you will be reimbursed 50% of the Try SCUBA fee by Buckeye Diving School. Certain restrictions do apply: - Must be at least 10 years of age. - An adult must accompany children under 16. - Pre registration is required (sorry no drop-ins) - Medical release form must be completed before pool work. Begin your underwater adventure here at Cleveland State University! Buckeye Diving School will be conducting a SCUBA diving program to give you the tools and training to enjoy the underwater world to its fullest potential. The second part of your SSI (SCUBA Schools International) Open Water Diving certification will involve 4 open water dives. Registration is taken at Customer Service Desk.
